Radio X have revealed the list of acts performing alongside The Maccabees for one of On The Beach’s shows in Brighton this July. The day will see an all-star cohort of British indie-rockers play on the sands of the south coast, including Editors, Miles Kane and Anna Calvi.

On The Beach is a series of summer day concerts run with British station Radio X, all set on a giant stage on Brighton Beach. Past iterations have brought the likes of Royal Blood and Noel Gallagher in 2023, The Kooks and The Libertines in 2024, and both Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party last year. For this July, the other events cover ska and electronic music, with Madness on the 24th and Moby on the 26th, while Fatboy Slim is booked for three shows in his spiritual home across the 17th, 18th and 19th. The Maccabees, who play the biggest night of music in this years event on the 25th of July, chose to split and send the band off with a farewell tour in 2017, but returned for live shows starting with Glastonbury and a headline set at All Points East last year.

The full lineup was announced yesterday on Dan O’Connell’s Evening Show on Radio X, as he sat down to chat with co-host Felix White, guitarist for The Maccabees. Under its former name XFM London, the station was the first to promote the group before their breakthrough, and Brighton was the place where they initially rose to prominence. Prior to the news, White was asked whether there might be new music in the pipeline for the band, to which he responded cautiously “it’s not a no at the moment.”

The day opens with local indie quartet Lime Garden, before singer-songwriter Damon Gough, better known as Badly Drawn Boy plays. Northern Irish cult classic rock band Ash take to the stage third, before the incredibly talented singer-songwriter Anna Calvi makes her appearance. Miles Kane is next up, bringing his captivating solo show, and Editors fill the penultimate set with their brand of darker post-punk. Finally The Maccabees close the night with what will most definitely be another emotional, long-awaited headline set.

Radio X On The Beach with The Maccabees runs from 1PM to 10:30PM on Saturday the 25th of July at Brighton Beach. The new wave of tickets go on pre-sale on Tuesday the 31st of March, with a sign-up link here.

Only 24 hours since The Beatles released their ‘final song’, “Now And Then,” Liverpool singer Miles Kane has covered the song in what is an ode to the band he believes is the greatest of all time. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr released the song based on a demo that John Lennon worked on before his death.

The Beatles released “Now And Then” yesterday at 2pm GMT, featuring original members John Lennon and George Harrison and it has been met with critical and popular acclaim already, providing what many feel is a fitting coda to the end of one of the greatest rock bands in history. While the likes of Liam Gallagher praised the song in the highest regard, Liverpool musician Miles Kane went one step further and covered the brand new song himself.

Speaking about the single, kane posted to Instagram, “Came round me mate Dave’s to listen to the first play of the new Beatles tune. I LOVE! 5 mins later we worked it out! The best band in the world I love them so much! Now and Then LOVE MK.”
Kane is no stranger to covering Beatles songs, being a member of supergroup Jaded Hearts Club, which also features Matt Bellamy and Graham Coxon. And Kane has spoken about his love for The Beatles previously, saying about the song “This Boy,” “The lyrics got me. When I watched it on A Hard Day’s Night and they do it, it’s the emotion of it that I felt I could connect with.”

He continued, “It’s quite a sad song, in a beautiful way, and it’s probably one of the first songs I tried to teach myself on guitar. It’s one of those songs that gives me a lot of emotion.”

Perhaps best known for his work with the bands The Rascals and The Last Shadow Puppets, which he formed with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, Kane has also become a notable solo artist. Releasing five studio albums to date, the singer has also collaborated with Turner, Noel Gallagher and French actress Clemence Poesy.

In 2017, Kane, along with fellow musicians Matt Bellamy of Muse, Nic Cester of Jet, Graham Coxon of Blur, Sean Payne of the Zutons and Nine Inch Nails and Jamie Davis formed The Jaded Hearts Club-a Beatles tribute band. Initially only playing songs by The Beatles, the band have also covered songs by Cream, The Who and The Kinks.
Kane has recently supported Arctic Monkeys on their UK and Ireland tour.

Miles Kane’s latest studio album, Change the Show, was released last Friday, following up 2018’s Coup de Grace. It apparently boasts a more emotionally honest approach, with Kane saying “I always just write for me, what I’m going through …. I think this one maybe just highlights it more.“ However, the album has something else going for it as well; the return of Lily Savage.

The drag queen alter-ego of comedian Paul O’Grady, Lily Savage was initially developed back in the seventies, soon becoming a popular part of eighties gay culture. Opening the track “Don’t Let it Get You Down“, O’Grady quotes the character with the lines “I can’t bloody well understand it, if you want my honest opinion. It’s got everything: clear diction, beautifully spoken. You know, it’s topical, you know. It’s up to date.“

Apparently, the job of getting the character involved was more difficult than one might think. Kane originally wanted to sample from the original Savage sketch, but the BBC’s fee rights had them asking for “stupid money“. On the bright side, O’Grady – a fan of Kane’s – offered to redo the lines free of charge, reportedly joking that the BBC were “tight bastards“.

Kane had this to say about the matter: “To get the licensing off the BBC they wanted stupid money for it, so we contacted him and it turned out he’s a big fan of mine. He’s got all my records. So me and him spoke on the phone and he had me in stitches. And he’s like, ‘I’ll just re-record it for you’.“

Despite some people questioning the importance of the line in the first place, Kane was apparently adamant, insisting that it was “more important to me than the song itself now“, saying the line is “like it’s describing my record“.

The album may have only just come out, but fans might have some other releases to look forward to as well, with Kane claiming that his collaborations with American singer Lana Del Rey have amounted to a whole album’s worth of unreleased material. Having worked together in the past on songs such as Del Rey’s “Dealer“, Kane said that “We did so many songs …. There’s quite a lot, y’know. Probably enough for an album: we’d still need to finish some bits off, but there’s definitely some completed tunes.“

If you’re interested in hearing Kane’s latest LP, Change the Show can be ordered from here or listened to here. He’s also got some tour dates coming up, moving through Liverpool, Nottingham and Brighton over the next few days, as well as Europe this April.

Ex-Rascals frontman and The Last Shadow Puppets member Miles Kane has released a new single, “Nothing’s Ever Gonna Be Good Enough”, from his soon-to-be-released new album, Change the Show. The single is a duet between Kane and singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, with a music video depicting the two dueting, as well as a montage of them as children together on a date, visiting the seaside and an arcade.

By far my favourite track off my new album, my new single ‘Nothing’s Ever Gonna Be Good Enough’ feat.@CorinneBRae is out now.
In speaking on the opportunity to work with the singer, Kane said “I love the back and forth between us. I wanted an Ike and Tina vibe, not a gratuitous guest. Unfortunately, we had to record it remotely, but we’ll perform it on stage together I’m sure.” Bailey Rae was similarly pleased, saying “I love this song and can’t get it out of my head. So pleased to be on it with my dear friend Miles.”

The song is Kane’s fourth single release from his upcoming album, which is due out next January 21st via BMG. The other three are last month’s “See Ya When I See Ya”, last September’s “Caroline”, and August’s “Don’t Let it Get You Down”, more of which you can read about here. The album follows his 2018 effort Coup de Grace, and was influenced by lockdown, with Kane saying the new record “was born out of an intense period of self-reflection; having all this unexpected time on my hands”. Some of the inspiration behind the material was “big highs, big lows, daydreams, true friends and deep feelings”, with influences of classic rock, Motown and Northern Soul being used. The overall result should be “a really uplifting album” for fans everywhere to enjoy. The release of the album will be followed by a 16-date tour of the UK next January to February. The tour will see Kane playing some songs from his new album, as well as possibly some hits from supergroup The Last Shadow Puppets, a band which Kane co-fronts with Arctic Monkeys member Alex Turner. Venues being visited include London’s Roundhouse, as well as Liverpool’s O2 Academy. Kane will also be headlining the Neighbourhood Weekender festival in Warrington’s Parr Hall on January 29th, supported by alternative rock group Red Rum Club, following his previous performance there last September.

Stockport band Blossoms are set to headline the Sefton Park Pilot this May. Yes, you heard me right, this May: there will be no social distancing, no masks, just gig-goers enjoying live music for the first time in over a year.

5,000 lucky fans will get to witness Zulu, The Lathums and Blossoms take over The Big Top inside Liverpool’s historic park, which before the pandemic was welcoming crowds of 7,500. attendees will need a negative Covid test to access the event on May 2nd. Anyone hoping to attend will also have to provide contact details for test and trace, as well as taking a Covid test after the event- Blossoms have a dedicated army of fans, so tickets will sell fast for this one.

Tickets are on sale now, but only adult residents of the Liverpool City region are eligible. This is an incredibly exciting moment for the prospect of live events returning: we’ve all watched live-stream concerts of our favorite artists, but without the sweat, shouting and pint-spilling, its difficult to capture the ‘lightning in a bottle’ spirit of seeing a band in the flesh.

Blossoms have had a productive 2020, releasing a brilliant double album, ‘In Isolation / Live From The Plaza Theatre, Stockport’ which included a variety of covers, acoustic versions and collaborations with indie-legends Miles Kane and Courteeners. The second part of the double album is a superb live set, jam packed with their strongest tracks. They also put out their third studio album, ‘Foolish Loving Spaces’ in January, which was met with a great reception from their fans.

I can’t wait to see my favourite bands live again and I certainly hope that this event goes off without a hitch. It really feels as if we are within touching distance of getting to a gig again: with football fans in Wembley this weekend, it really feels like we are getting ‘back to normal’.

Northern Soul is back with The Jaded Hearts Club’s brand new debut album You’ve Always Been Here. Filled with dancehall classics and songs you probably forgot you’d ever heard, The Jaded Hearts Club give the 2020, stadium-filling touch to the genre that enlightened an entire generation, more than four decades ago.

The new album, You’ve Always Been Here, comprises of 11 covers, from Matt Bellamy’s fragment of ‘We’ll Meet Again’ to the wall of sound that is ‘Love’s Gone Bad’. The group carries Northern Soul into a new dimension, full of electric guitars, feedback, and the combined talent of musicians at the very top of their game.

In case you missed it, The Jaded Hearts Club are a supergroup in every single sense of the word. They have the most stellar line-up – Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets) and Nic Cester (Jet) as joint frontmen, Graham Coxon (Blur) and Jamie Davis playing guitar, Matt Bellamy (Muse) on bass and Sean Payne (the Zutons) as the drummer. Sometimes Abi Harding (The Zutons) joins them on the saxophone.

To prove it, The Jaded Hearts Club released a series of singles leading up to this release: ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ (see below), ‘This Love Starved Heart Of Mine (It’s Killing Me)’ and ‘Love’s Gone Bad’. It seems fair to say that all the energy and glamour of The Jaded Hearts Club is found among these three singles; while the rest of the album tracks are exciting, they don’t have the explosive enthusiasm of their early singles. They come with energetic, lockdown-appropriate, black-and-white music videos, and Matt Bellamy in different but equally intriguing Rule Britannia-esque accessories. It’s all very, very cool.

Following these, You’ve Always Been Here has the best intentions in the world. The band’s desire to reinvent Northern Soul is overpowering and infectious, and you can sense how eager they were to find out what their combined talents could do. A lot, is the answer. Sometimes it completely hits the mark. Sometimes, though, it falls flat, stripping the covers of their unique qualities, leaving behind something that is undeniably very talented, but a little soulless.

Ultimately the album is technically impressive, but it wants for a sense of cohesion. In many ways so does the group themselves; the six (sometimes seven) strong and talented personalities sort of blur together. There is absolutely no doubt that this group could tackle any song in the world with spades of ability, but You’ve Always Been Here could probably have done with a bit more of a story. The Jaded Hearts Club are easily the greatest cover band in the world, but we don’t quite know what makes them tick.

All three of the album’s singles are particular highlights, as are Nic Cester’s ‘Long and Lonesome Road’ and ‘I Put a Spell on You’. To my mind, this is the version of the line-up which delivers the most. Nic Cester doing the vocals, accompanied by powerful percussion and the familiar wind instruments of Northern Soul feels like the group’s greatest strength – and where they’re strong, they’re unstoppable.

Since 2017, the group have shared powerful, covers of everything from the Beatles (their starting point) to The Isley Brothers. According to Rough Trade, Davis wanted a Beatles band to play for his birthday. He’s quoted as saying: “I knew a bunch of 1/2 decent musician friends so I asked if they’d form an early ‘60s Beatles band. Everyone had such a good time that we decided to do it again.” Their website declares that they “have been described as the ultimate Beatles cover band.”

Surely, in one of those dream dinner party games (six people on your ideal dinner table, dead or alive, you know the drill) you couldn’t come up with a better line-up. What we really want from The Jaded Hearts Club, though, is a bit of purpose – we all know that there’s a niche for them in this current moment, but none of us know why. When they do show us exactly what 21st century Northern Soul can do, it’s completely unforgettable.

Supergroup The Jaded Hearts Club have released another superb single, a cover of ‘Love’s Gone Bad’, in advance of their debut album You’ve Always Been Here, coming on October 2. This joins a string of great Northern Soul covers, which we can expect from the upcoming album.

Supergroup is absolutely the right term for the combined talent of Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets) and Nic Cester (Jet) as joint frontmen, Graham Coxon (Blur) and Jamie Davis playing guitar, Matt Bellamy (Muse) on bass and Sean Payne (the Zutons) as the drummer. Sometimes Abi Harding (The Zutons) joins them on the saxophone. Musically, they are as fantastic as you’d hope – Kane and Cester have different but extremely powerful voices, and the rest of the band make their instruments look and sound like a natural extension of themselves.

Currently, we’ve only seen the group publish covers – mainly incredible, stripped back, guitar-based versions of Northern soul classics. There is rumour of original music, and they play all sorts at their infamous live shows, but it doesn’t look like any of this will feature on their debut album. For now, having the band re-invigorate Northern soul classics is more than good enough! The singles they’ve released in 2020 include versions of ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ (July), ‘This Love Starved Heart of Mine (It’s Killing Me)’ (April) and short little version of ‘We’ll Meet Again’, sung by Matt Bellamy.

Regarding their newest track, Kane called it: “‘Love’s Gone Bad’, a rare northern soul stomper that we dug from the underground. We beefed it up and gave it golden wings with matching loafers! Be prepared to dance!”

The video is so cool – it’s all in black and white, set in London’s Moth Club, and Matt Bellamy is wearing heart-shaped sunglasses. It’ll have you dancing, spinning, and probably online shopping for loafers and corduroy trousers. Mainly it’s Kane dancing with a partner. The other band members do show up though, playing their instruments while Kane and his partner leap about, spectacularly in time with each other. Although, of course, The Jaded Hearts Club offer a rock-based take on Northern soul, the video is very much in the spirit of the 1960s dancehalls where the genre really took off.

The group formed in 2017. According to Rough Trade, Davis wanted a Beatles band to play for his birthday, and he’s quoted as saying: “I knew a bunch of 1/2 decent musician friends so I asked if they’d form an early ‘60s Beatles band. Everyone had such a good time that we decided to do it again.” In 2019 they recorded a live album at London’s iconic ‘The 100 Club’. Their website declares that they “have been described as the ultimate Beatles cover band.”

It’s not so long to wait for their album now – but you should know that the 12” version, on marble patterned vinyl, is already sold out for pre-orders! The Jaded Hearts Club are so fantastically energetic, even these three-minute videos feel like a true taste of what they’re like live. Hopefully there will be more of that to come, following the release of You’ve Always Been Here.

The band that kick-started Miles Kane’s career, The Little Flames, are set to release an album that has until now been lost in the vaults of unreleased music (nestled somewhere in between Detox and Songs from the Black Hole we presume).

The Day Is Not Today was supposed to be The Little Flames’ debut album, after releasing a string of singles. The band recorded the album with producer Tore Johansson in Sweden, but split in pursuit of other projects in 2007 – before the album ever managed to see the light of day.

Speaking to Live4Ever Miles Kane said “I’m excited to finally be able to drop the needle in this particular groove, I had a lot of good times with The Flames and I have very fond memories of making this record.”

He continued by saying: “Every time I listen to these songs I think of Alan Wills and I’m forever grateful for the opportunity he and Joe Fearon gave me. I’m delighted that everyone is able to now hear what we collectively created.”

The album is now finally getting a release as part of the re-launch of indie-label Deltasonic. The Day is Not Today is getting a release this Friday, March 4th 2016 (which is not today), and for vinyl lovers, the album is getting pressed on coloured wax for Record Store Day on April 16th. Meanwhile Miles Kane and Alex Turner’s supergroup The Last Shadow Puppets’ album Everything You’ve Come to Expect is out April 1st.
