Sinead O’Connor has announced her retirement from music and touring, the Irish singer-songwriter has made the announcement through a series of social media posts. Within the posts, she has confirmed that her recent album ‘No Veterans Die Alone’ due to be released in January 2022, will be her last release.

In an initial tweet from the singer’s account, she announced her retirement stating time and tiredness as the central reasons for her decision to leave the music industry.

This is to announce my retirement from touring and from working in the record business. I’ve gotten older and I’m tired. So it’s time for me to hang up my nipple tassels, having truly given my all. NVDA in 2022 will be my last release. And there’ll be no more touring or promo.

— Sinead O’Connor (Shuhada Sadaqat) (@MagdaDavitt77) June 4, 2021

The 54-year-old singer then posted another tweet, which comforts fans by describing how the decision is not bad and that she simply needs to have respite.

It’s not sad news. It’s staggeringly beautiful news. A wise warrior knows when he or she should retreat: #MeTime ❤️ — Sinead O’Connor (Shuhada Sadaqat) (@MagdaDavitt77) June 4, 2021

The ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ singer then proceeds to tweet seemingly reminiscing on her four-decade-long career. She again stresses the decision is based on obtaining some rest whilst helping others achieve their goals.

It’s been a forty year journey. Time to put the feet up and make other dreams come true ; )

— Sinead O’Connor (Shuhada Sadaqat) (@MagdaDavitt77) June 4, 2021

Another tweet then followed swiftly which apologised for the effect in which her retirement would have within the music business itself. Within the tweet, she apologised to booking agents, promoters and managers who may have been blind sighted by the social media activity concerning the shocking news. She also goes on to state how writing and releasing her recent memoir entitled ‘Rememberings’ made her realise that she wanted a new journey. The singer describes how she wants to gain control over her career and not rely on men professionally.

Apologies if any upset caused to booking agents or promoters or managers due to my tweeting about my retirement. I guess the book made me realise I’m my own boss. I didn’t wanna wait for permission from the men, as to when I could announce it. Also, I’d had a few whiskeys : ) — Sinead O’Connor (Shuhada Sadaqat) (@MagdaDavitt77) June 5, 2021

The singer’s news of her retirement has caused a lot of sadness and support from her many fans, with many of them commenting on her posts with well wishes and stories of how her music has helped them within their life. One Twitter user had commented on her initial post asking if tickets will be invalid and if her rescheduled show from 2020 will be cancelled due to the recent news shared on Twitter, the user then concluded the tweet by thanking O’Connor for her music and expresses her excitement to read the singer’s memoir. O’Connor replied to the user and well-wisher by stating that all shows will be cancelled and ended the reply by comparing her ageing to the COVID pandemic.

Yes, all shows which were originally set for 2020, rescheduled to 2021 and then to 2022 are going to be pulled. Because this soldier woman has grown old quicker than covid.

— Sinead O’Connor (Shuhada Sadaqat) (@MagdaDavitt77) June 4, 2021

In other news, O’Connor has recently made some brutal accusations regarding musical legend Prince. She has stated that he was a devil worshipper and has written in her memoir that when she covered his song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ he had invited her to his house, during this visit she describes how she saw his eyes vanish whilst he was guarding the door to his mansion.

The singer recently gave a revealing interview to The Times in which she tells stories of the arguments in which the two had and claims that the situation became ‘Sinister’. Within the article a passage from her memoir is included which further describes the singer’s wild claims. “That is as true as God, I believe he was involved in Devil business because an old girlfriend of his told me he had the power to make shit move around the room. He got me up there to see: could this bitch be one of mine? I guess he didn’t bank on the Irish in me telling him to go f*** himself.”

Sinead O’Connor has voiced her outrage over her interview on the show ‘Woman’s Hour‘ aired on BBC Radio 4. The interview hosted by Emma Barnett was aired on 1st June 2021 and has since been labelled as “extremely offensive and even misogynistic” by the Irish singer who has also urged fans to boycott the show since the interview.

O’Connor was initially on the show to discuss her new memoir ‘Rememberings’, published on 1st June 2021, but the interview then took a turn in which angered the ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ singer. Within the interview, the host referenced a quote from an article within the newspaper The Telegraph. In the article music critic Neil McCormick had called the singer ‘The crazy lady in pop’s attic’.

The quote was brought up during a conversation regarding the singer’s public struggle with mental health issues, O’Connor took offensive to the discussion and appeared to deem it invasive. She also likened the comparison with the character Bertha Mason taken from the 1847 novel by Charlotte Bronte ‘Jane Eyre’. The singer responded to the quote stating “I think it’s a bit extreme to make the Jane Eyre comparison, I don’t think I’ve ever been perceived as ‘the crazy lady in pop’s attic’ as represented in Jane Eyre. It’s not like I’m trying to attack people with knives or trying to strangle people while I’m walking around in my nightdress.”

The singer then took to Twitter after the interview to voice her outrage.

Actually found the interview with @Emmabarnett extremely offensive and even misogynistic. One abusive and invalidating question or statement after another: “madwoman in the attic” At that point I should have ended it. I will absolutely never do Women’s hour again.

— Sinead O’Connor (Shuhada Sadaqat) (@MagdaDavitt77) June 1, 2021

The singer has recently changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat after converting to Islam in 2018 but has kept Sinead O’Connor has her stage name and continues to record under it. She rose to fame within the late 1980s and early 1990’s when she released her famous cover of the classic Prince song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’. The single was released on 8th January 1990 when the singer was in her early 20’s, the song debuted at number one and became hugely successful.

The 54-year-old artist then caused controversy during a performance on Saturday Night Live on 3rd October 1992. O’Connor took to the stage and performed an a cappella rendition of ‘War’ by Bob Marley, the cover was to be in protest against the alleged sexual abuse claims within the Catholic church. The singer then presented a picture of Pope John Paul ii and proceeded to tear the picture whilst singing to the camera.

The incident has remained synonymous with controversy and has followed O’Connor throughout her career and life. The singer has recently announced that she will be releasing her first album in eight years. The album entitled ‘No Veterans Die Alone‘, is set to be released in 2022.

Since the interview O’Connor also posted on Twitter to apologise for a comment she made in which she compared herself to Jamaican men. The singer had spoken about how she has four children with four different men, during this comment the singer made the comparison in question.

Also, apologies if I accidentally offended Jamaican men. I was referring to specific friends of mine in the music business. Jamaican people are my favourite people on this earth and Jamaican male musicians my biggest inspiration. https://t.co/4S9cT9X1An — Sinead O’Connor (Shuhada Sadaqat) (@MagdaDavitt77) June 1, 2021

The host of Woman’s hour Barnett has yet to comment on O’Connor’s disgust expressed over the interview. However, a spokesperson from the BBC has provided a statement to Radiotimes concerning the disagreement. “During an interview about her new book, Sinead O’Connor was talking about her mental health and was asked what she made of a comment by a music critic reviewing her book in recent days.”

Sinead O’Connor, now known as Shuhada Sadaqat, announced on December 7th that she will be releasing her memoir Rememberings. The memoir will be available June 1st, 2021 but can currently be pre-ordered on Amazon.

The 54 year old Irish native has been working on this memoir for the past few years, stating that this is my story, as I remember it. Rememberings will be published via Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books & Media.

Deb Brody, the vice president of the publishing company, stated that the memoir will include O’Connor’s struggles with illness and her fraught childhood. Brody continued that the book will also delve into her musical triumphs and the enduring power of song.

Brody continued to praise the coming memoir, describing t as remarkably candid and intensely personal with the overarching theme being about the famed musician leading a life both charmed and troubled.

While nothing compares to O’Connor’s mega hit single Nothing Compares 2U, she has had many musical accomplishments throughout her career including winning a Brit Award and a Grammy. She has released 10 full-length albums, the most recent arriving in 2014 titled I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss.

She recently released the track and music video for her political version of Trouble of the World, which was made available in the fall of 2020. The vinyl version will be released December 11, 2020, six months ahead of the memoir.

As well as her many musical achievements, O’Connor has also been the subject of controversy throughout her career. The most famous example of this is when the artist shocked the world, and the SNL producers, by ripping a picture of Pope John Paul II during her performance on the show. This was the climax of her disdain for politics and religion and caused backlash throughout the world.

O’Connor changed her named in 2018 to Shuhada Sadaqat when she converted to Islam, however she continues to use her Irish name in her music and now in this upcoming memoir. After converting, she made waves when she tweeted that white people and non-muslims were disgusting and she never wanted to speak to another again; a statement for which she later apologized.
