MARINA has shared a sombre, synth-y affinity with her fans since her debut album ‘The Family Jewels’ in 2010. Since then she has released eight EPs and five studio albums, making ‘PRINCESS OF POWER’ her sixth. Her standout projects include ‘Electra Heart’, the singer’s first album to reach Number 1 in the UK. The album lifted her siren vocals to a satirical, moody and fun collection of songs in the eye of her self-created alter ego which existed solely for this album. The project also led to one of her most popular tracks ‘Primadonna’ which peaked at number 11 in the UK charts.

MARINA’s thought-provoking ‘Electra Heart’ considers femininity and identity, which she has discussed in several instances. In an interview with Channel 4 News, MARINA explains how she uses pop to discuss her struggles in seeing the objectification of women in the media when she was growing up.

Since then, MARINA has only topped herself with creative endeavours, sharing a thoughtful poetry collection on the artist’s musing of the heart, ‘Eat the world: A collection of poems.’ published in 2024. This was a welcomed pursuit considering her exploration of love and identity throughout her discography.

The Welsh electro-pop singer has been teasing her latest album ‘PRINCESS OF POWER’ for several months, with the release of several track ahead of the full album, including ‘BUTTERFLY’ and ‘CUPID’S GIRL’, both with haunting, artistic accompanying videos. A fan favourite track, however, seems to be ‘CUNTISSIMO’. The song was shared with a period piece music video with a pink, theatrical personality that runs through the image of the album.

Her performance of the moody pop track debuted at Coachella this year with fans sharing the performance from all angles, revelling in her addictive stage presence.

Ahead of her Coachella performance, MARINA shared her film inspiration for the album with the film-based social media app, Letterboxd. The list she shared with Letterboxd includes several notable films across the decades, such as the cult classic ‘Death Becomes Her’, alongside recent award winning films ‘Poor Things’ and ‘The Substance’.

The artist’s inspirations give insight into a dark album ahead, surely providing a MARINA-esque commentary on womanhood and the self.

MARINA is gearing up for an eventful 2025. Following the release of her poetry collection Eat the World last autumn, the Welsh artist made her musical comeback last month with ‘Butterfly’, a track that metaphorically mirrors her own re-emergence. With a new album on the horizon – her first since ‘Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land’ (2021) – she’s set to hit the festival circuit this spring and summer, beginning with Coachella in April. Now, she’s keeping the momentum going with her latest single, ‘Cupid’s Girl’.

Released Friday March 21, MARINA, real name Marina Diamandis, took to Instagram to tease the song’s release – a high-energy dance track that swaps out chamber-pop elements for a vibrant, electro-pop groove. The new-release is also accompanied by a visualiser, directed by Los-Angeles based Logan Rice, which depicts the 39-year old singer in a Snow White-esque blue and yellow outfit, putting into action the single’s core theme of a Cupid’s bow and arrow. You can check out the visualiser below.

In conversation with Paper, MARINA reflected on the hopeful aspects of the new song and how that has manifested in her personal life: “I think the sense of what’s right and wrong particularly resonates because it’s taken me a long time to challenge that and be like, ‘The world is not an ideal place,’ and to try and relax that part in myself. Because I so want it to be, and actually it kind of blocks you from seeing people and situations for the way that they actually are, which has taken me really up until this point in my life to be able to do that.”

Previously known as Marina and The Diamonds, the Welsh songstress has released five studio albums to date, rising to fame on the launch of her 2010 debut ‘The Family Jewels’ which entered the UK Albums Chart at #5, and featured hit-single ‘Hollywood’, earning Diamandis the #12 spot on the UK Singles Chart. Her sophomore album ‘Electra Heart’ (2012) became her first number one album in the UK, producing Diamandis’ most famous singles ‘Primadonna’ and ‘How to Be a Heartbreaker’. This year, the electropop artist is also set to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of her 2015 album ‘FROOT’ with a limited edition red EcoRecord, which will feature the unreleased track ‘I’m Not Hungry Anymore’ and a tropical themed sticker, this special edition is set to drop on July 25.

Marina Diamandis has dropped the diamonds and has re-appeared in her rightful place in the music industry, after deciding to quit music for good at the end of her Neon Nation Tour three years ago. Her recent comeback as ‘MARINA’ leaves her previous pop persona in the past. Her new album ‘Love + Fear’ represents her journey as an artist, and has already proved a success with fans.

Marina first appeared in the music scene in 2009, with the stage name ‘Marina and The Diamonds’, where she performed at Glastonbury and Radio 1’s big weekend, but it wasn’t until her hit single ‘Primadonna’ that her popularity began to grow. The persona she created for herself was a bubbly cartoonised representation of a strong female identity, which was the basis of her first two albums ‘Electra Heart’ and ‘Froot’.

The Neon Nation Tour began in October 2015; this was a huge tour for Marina, who travelled across Europe and America performing tracks from all three of her albums. Whilst on tour, Marina grieved the loss of both her Aunt and Grandmother all within a short amount of time. Unable to cancel dates, Diamandis had to face performing on stage every night whilst trying to cope with her loss.

This pressure led to significant depression and anxiety, and after the tour wrapped up in 2016, Marina announced her departure from music. Three years later, she explains “I didn’t feel the same about music anymore or why I was motivated to be an artist”. After an obviously gruelling tour, she said that she stopped growing as an artist “I don’t want my face on anything. I don’t like anyone looking at me”.

During her three year break, Diamandis decided she needed time to find herself as an individual, away from her musical identity. She tried her hand at floristry and acting, but eventually went back to school to study Psychology at Birbeck University of London. During the extensive amount of time spent studying, Marina’s creative impulses began to come back.

Marina has always been an introspective artist, giving hints on her album ‘FROOT’ that she wasn’t happy living within the music industry; but her comeback albums are more introspective than ever. She released two full albums in April this year titled ‘LOVE’ and ‘LOVE+FEAR’, which stemmed from her time studying Psychology, where she learnt that everything we do stems from the feeling of either love or fear. “I thought it was a beautiful, universal way of painting a picture of human experience”.

“There are only two emotions: Love and Fear. All positive emotions come from love, all negative emotions from fear. We cannot feel these two emotions together, at exactly the same time. They’re opposites”

– Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

— MARINA (@MarinaDiamandis) April 4, 2019

The shift in name also comes with a shift of image, having stripped back both her personality and her vocals for her 2019 releases. Marina has left her colourful cover images in the past, and has switched up to a more mature black and white album cover, reflective of this new stage in her life. One of the first tracks released from the album was ‘Handmade Heaven’ which is almost a diary entry, perfect for her cult following to understand what exactly it was that Diamandis was going through.
