UK Pop sensation Maisie Peters has announced that she is embarking on a six-date acoustic tour ahead of the release of her new album The Good Witch in June. This includes five dates in England, and one date in Edinburgh, Scotland to finish it all off.

Maisie Peters announced the tour on Instagram, as shown below, saying: “gonna be doing these little acoustic evenings to celebrate the good witch release, where i’ll be talking through the album and its creation, playing some songs, spilling some secrets, pouring my heart out to u all”

It is the one of three tours the singer has embarked on this year, as well as numerous festivals.

Before announcing one of the acoustic dates in Brighton, Peters played a headline show at the Brighton Dome last week; a landmark venue in her hometown. She wrote on Instagram: “whenever my manager asks me and the band what are our dream venues are, joel says red rocks and tina says madison square and i say brighton dome. so last night was pretty cool :’) felt very hometown hero last night playing a show in the place i first ever really loved live music, thank u anyone who came and sang with me <3”

Barn On The Farm Festival in Gloucester wrapped up it’s 2022 comeback in the early hours of yesterday morning for it’s 11th return to Over Farm. The festival has enjoyed a particularly well fated and illustrious lineup in the decade it’s been operating and become a hotly tipped breeding ground for all the next big things in music. Having started the festival back in 2009, its founder Josh Sanger has always had a knack for spotting new talent and giving them a platform to do their thing before anyone else. An impressive list of previous invitees has since emerged, with Ed Sheeran, Hozier, George Ezra, Sam Fender, Maggie Rogers, Lewis Capaldi, Dermot Kennedy, Ben Howard, and Rag’n’Bone Man being but a few names to feature on lineups gone by.

This year, I was lucky enough to play the festival and get a chance to snoop around (I moonlight as a wannabe popstar), and to cut to the chase, was pretty blown away by what Josh and his team have managed to put together over the years. Scattered with 3 stages, Barn, Outdoor, and Main, and accommodating no more than 2000 people, the site is small but bustling with more charm and sincerity than most festivals I’ve attended. Taking advantage of it’s status as a working farm, you can find ostriches, alpacas, donkeys, enormous pigs, and horses casually walking amongst the fields whilst interested and usually inebriated festival goers look on both amused and enamoured. There are hammocks, outdoor beds, orchards, and even the curious new addition of “Grandma’s House” to enjoy as you wonder around the site, the latter being the creation of chief festival designer Harriet Lily. Grandma’s House, a tiny wooden shack with an overgrown lawn and bras and stockings hanging on a washing line, remained a mystery until it’s opening at 19.00 on the Friday night, when it soon became swarmed with people looking to enjoy the late night DJ set that went on inside. Only able to house 15 people at a time, you are allowed to enjoy an aptly designated 15 minutes of dancing before being kicked out for the next batch of clubbers, with 220 Kid even dropping by to play a surprise set this year. Elsewhere James Bay, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Vaccines, Maisie Peters, Easy Life, Maverick Sabre, and Tom Walker headlined across the various stages over the weekend, with Holly Humberstone, Beabadoobee, Griff, and many other hotly tipped rising stars playing just beneath them.

As an artist playing there, the first thing you notice is an overwhelming sense of acceptance and welcome on arrival. The green room is the same for everyone, whether you’re me or Bombay Bicycle Club, everyone is put under one big barn roof that I can only imagine houses tractors during it’s everyday running as a farm. On the first weekend of July every year though, it’s home to hundreds of creatives from around the world as they wait to get on stage. With beer, cider, food, coffee, tea, and even a very friendly man named Tom’s bake off worthy homemade brownies scattered around the room, anything you want- the wonderful green room staff have got you covered.

Unfortunately I only get 500ish words to write this article, so I’m going to have to stop prattling on, however I would highly highly recommend checking this festival out and going next year. I think it’s my favourite I’ve attended so far and can’t sing it’s praises enough. For more info click here.

The release was accompanied by a music video, which stars Peters and was directed by Louis Bhose. Speaking about the track, Peters says: “I wrote ‘John Hughes Movie’ when I was 17 about a house party that I had gone to. It’s a really honest depiction of being a hopeless, melodramatic teenager, being awkward and drunk and getting your heart broken by people you don’t even remember anymore. John Hughes films encapsulate that foolish romantic energy of high school and everything that I, a small town English wannabe Molly Ringwald wanted to be, but was not.”

Peters began to gain popularity in 2015 by posting original songs on YouTube. Her debut single Place We Were Made was released in 2017, followed by her first EP Dressed Too Nice for a Jacket in 2018. Her second EP It’s Your Bed Babe, It’s Your Funeral came out in 2019, and she released a series of singles during the 2020 lockdown, including Daydreams and Sad Girl Summer.

Maisie Peters is back with a new single, ‘Maybe Don’t’, featuring JP Saxe. The duo have collaborated for a very cool, stripped back love song for the age of emotional unavailability, but at the same time it’s tender in all the right places. You can stream it everywhere, or watch the lyric video below.

‘Maybe Don’t’ feels like the natural evolution of Peters’ musical sensibility from ‘The List’, released earlier this year. It has a similar sound but it is even more stripped back – in that regard, it is most similar to Peters’ latest single, ‘Sad Girl Summer’. Throughout her career she has evolved from a great lyricist to a great lyricist with a real ear for musical arrangement, and her latest work has been consistently sophisticated in this regard.

Between Peters and JP Saxe, ‘Maybe Don’t’ is filled with combined songwriting genius. Actually, though, the single uses few words – Peters referred to it as “minimalist”, which is quite far from her usual, poetic, diary-like style of writing. Speaking to Thomas Bleach, she explained:

“Essentially the song started with Joe in the booth, and it was really important that it was very minimalist. I’m sure I will play the first demo one day, but it was SUPER minimal. I guess it was very inspired by Jeremy Zucker, Lorde, and that world of minimalist pop which embraces only adding things element by element, and if they’re not 100% necessary then they’re taking them out. We were trying to keep it really light, immediate and warm.”

The few lines they do choose to share are filled with meaning and wordplay: “I don’t know how to fall asleep unless you say goodnight”; “you been making group decisions / about us / without us” ‘Maybe Don’t’ has been defined as a conversational love song, and it is – but not the way you might expect. The softness of the sentiment is presented in reverse, through a lens of commitment issues and emotional unavailability. The accompanying energised pop sound is anything but love-ballad-gentle; this is a love song that’s perfect for the digital age and the current moment. ‘Maybe Don’t’ shows, once again, that Maisie Peters is anything but predictable.

Maisie Peters is one of the artists who hasn’t been at all deterred by quarantine. She has zoomed with fans, created interactive, webcam music videos for ‘Sad Girl Summer’, and produced Youtube content as promo for her latest singles. If there is a video in the works for ‘Maybe Don’t’, it certainly won’t be compromised by any lockdown restrictions.

Due to some combination of her age, her early Youtube career and her digital alertness, Maisie is completely creative with social media and it feels totally engaging, from an audience perspective. This is even true of the ‘Maybe Don’t’ lyric video, which is elevated by using a transcription of the lyrics, typed in real time, including quirks like corrected typos. It has the cautiously overenthusiastic feel of a text conversation between two people who really like each other but don’t want to ever seem too keen.

JP Saxe, her stellar collaborator, is perhaps best known for his collaboration ‘If the World Was Ending‘ with American singer Julia Michaels, titled with some ironic foresight, perhaps. It was released in October 2019, but it became part of his EP Hold It Together, which came out earlier this year. Maisie Peters is a self-confessed ‘massive fan’ of his work. ‘Maybe Don’t’ came together in just six hours before Saxe jetted off to Paris the same evening. You can hear that although ‘Maybe Don’t’ is distinctly part of the Maisie Peters trajectory, Saxe’s influence has certainly elevated her song writing to great new heights. You can stream ‘Maybe Don’t’ everywhere now.

Brighton-based artist Maisie Peters is known for her moody songwriting, or as she calls it, “emo-girl pop”. Her new single, released today and titled ‘Sad Girl Summer’, follows in the same direction, with her usual witty lyrics, such as “Take my hand and lose his number/You don’t have to have another sad girl summer”.

Already gaining plenty of attention, the song has been promoted for a week with cartoon social media posts from Peters, and much anticipation from fans. The music video, which the singer worked on with her friends, currently has 4,000 views after only two hours. Filmed at home while in lock-down, the girls are shown dancing and posing.

When the song and video finally came out, Maisie Peters was excited to share the news with her followers, explaining how they both came to be. She also left a message, saying, “I hope u shriek this song to your chosen families, your groupchats, your best friends, and I hope you remember that in THIS sad girl’s summer : no one dances on their mf own.”

This song is especially special to me because I made it entirely with people I love. I wrote it in la with the unreal @iamstephjones & @afterhrs_ the first time we met, before we all became real life actual friends and wrote many more songs together and split our actual sides laughing over dumb shit. Then, I shot this cover art last summer with @radhaggis who I’ve known since I was literally 15, when we both made youtube videos and I slid into his dm’s with facts about the coldwar. I got him to come down to brighton and take film photos of me and my hometown friends just fucking about for the day, and then fast forward a year, when I was tryna choose artwork for sad girl summer and I was suddenly like!!!! I should use those photos!!!!! Like the song is singing about friendship and girl gangs and building eachother up, and what is more perfect to represent that than a photo of me and my actual day 1 best mates @natashabanksss and @olivwalton who I went to prom with, and made tie dye shirts with, and crammed last minute for history gcse with. I hope u shriek this song to your chosen families, your groupchats, your best friends, and I hope you remember that in THIS sad girl’s summer : no one dances on their mf own

The artist held an Instagram livestream yesterday (30th June) to discuss the song and pique the interest of her followers. While in isolation, Peters has held many livestreams and found time to work on multiple projects including writing and recording new music or covers, and even filming a carpool karaoke style video with her twin sister, in which the pair sung to many of the artist’s previous tracks.

Posting original music on YouTube in 2015, Peters gained popularity over the next few years, releasing two singles independently before signing with Atlantic Records. Her YouTube channel has now reached 82,000 subscribers from her original music. With her record company, the artist has also put out numerous singles including ‘Worst Of You’ which has over 62 million streams on Spotify, as well as two EPs. On YouTube, her most viewed video is ‘Stay Young’, a single release from 2019.

Last week, on 6th April, singer-songwriter Maisie Peters announced that she would be posting a daily video in which she performed a cover song to calm viewers down during this difficult time. After a week, Peters has covered a range of bands from The 1975 to Fleetwood Mac.

The idea behind ‘The Bed Covers’ is to, as the artist wrote in a social media post, “cover a song that is calm and soothing and makes me feel slightly more peaceful in what we can all agree is not the most calm and peaceful time”. Kicking the series off with Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’, Peters creates a relaxing atmosphere, usually filming at sunset in her bedroom with only a piano or guitar, and her voice. She also writes a lovely message to fans on each video explaining why she chose a particular song.

Play it before u go to sleep or in the bath or in a difficult moment. I’m hoping it will help us both stop existential crisising for at least 59 seconds. Gonna start it off with one of the all time greatests, but pls leave any requests or ideas in the comments #thebedcovers

Requests are welcomed for the series, with fans most recently asking for ‘The Night We Met’ by Lord Huron. Peters gladly obliged, saying that she had forgotten how much she loved the song. “I forgot how much I adore this song. I had all and then most of u some and now none of u. Like what. Who writes that. Ugh. Keep requests coming,” she expressed.

The first cover came out only two weeks after the release of Peters’ new single ‘Daydreams‘, a song she worked on with Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian about unrequited love. The song received an amazing reception from fans, and Peters managed to make a lyric video from her home while self-isolating. The singer also was able to connect with fans through Instagram Live, running a livestream concert on the day ‘Daydreams’ was released.

This year, Maisie Peters was arranged as one of the supporting acts on Niall Horan’s ‘Nice To Meet Ya Tour’. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tour was unfortunately cancelled and Horan said he would be releasing new music and running an entirely new tour in 2021. It is not confirmed yet if Peters will remain a guest.

Posting original music on YouTube in 2015, Peters gained popularity over the next few years, releasing two singles independently before signing with Atlantic Records.
After announcing the release on Monday via social media, Peters teased fans with details of how she wrote the track, cryptic lyrics, and even the first verse of the song. Her followers loved the post and connected with the lyrics, as with every song this talented artist creates. She continues to further connect with fans by answering questions and joking with fans about the song on Twitter.

Along with the single, fans can watch the lyric video on YouTube. It has gained almost 1,000 views and shows Peters at her bedroom desk turning through a notebook where she has written the lyrics. The idea appears to come from the way in which she penned the song, making “melodramatic diary entries” in her iPhone notes. Peters is always very open about her songs and her process, writing about her personal experiences, which is what makes her relatable to so many.

Her EP ‘It’s Your Bed Babe, It’s Your Funeral’ was released in 2019. The singer-songwriter is set to support Niall Horan on his “Nice To Meet Ya Tour” at the end of the year.
