One of Britain’s biggest stars has taken the next exit out of Pop land into the underground antrum of electronic music. Having succeeded in being a member of a leading British pop band and drawn out onto an equally accomplished solo career, Robbie Williams takes to a new passion toward the offroads of the industry.

The Take That star covertly formed a trio band/project alongside Tim Metcalfe and Flynn Francis during lockdown in 2020. The band goes by the name Lufthaus and is inspired by the electronic scene in the German capital, Berlin. The band are determined to take the project as far as possible delving straight into the dance scene. There has been talk of their debut album release to be soon, however, there is still no official date.

It seems like they were hesitant to unmask the brains behind Lufthaus’s music at first until, after a few live appearances in Ibiza and a couple song releases, they revealed who the mysterious trio was. The three were brought together by their mutual love for Berlin electronica and have surfaced with a melodic delusion alongside a series of frenetic basslines. It is bound to be quite the intriguing project, bearing in mind the diversity of genre influences and experience between them.

The band has accompanied Robbie Williams on his worldwide tour. They have been playing as the opening act and have been greeted with positive feedback from the vast crowd. Up until now, the band have four single releases under Lufthaus. Via the electronic label, Armada Music, they have released “Sway”, “To The Light”, “Soul Seekers” and their most famous one “Unloveable”.

In an interview with MixMag, the band discuss the dynamic between the members. There’s an easy interaction between Metcalfe and Francis. They focus on songwriting and creating the top line ideas of the tracks, who then proceed to put the melody and lyric writing into Williams hands. He specifies in the interview:“The boys send me a track and then I usually listen to the music and see where it takes me melodically and lyrically. I want these lyrics to be different from what I usually do, I guess they’re more spiritual and from the heart”.

A desire to meet halfway between the essence of an electronic track and a more traditional song is focused within the group. Trying to take a little bit of both, they aim to acquire the sounds of an atmospheric, melodic electronica. “A lot of our unreleased music will reveal the other sides of Lufthaus in the coming months” explains Tim.

There is no official date for their new upcoming release. All we know is that it is on it’s way.

Fans of former Take That star and pop icon Robbie Williams might be getting a bit anxious at the moment. After cancelling a residency in Las Vegas due to the pandemic, his last album was all the way back in 2019 with the festive The Christmas Present. A lot of his staunchest admirers are probably wondering where his next release will come from. As it turns out, he’s already done it. It’s just no one had a clue.

It was revealed yesterday by The Sun that a track released earlier this month (February 11th) by a group known as Lufthaus featured Williams on vocals. It’s all been very hush-hush, with this being the group’s debut single. Titled “Sway“, the track has been described by NME as “a club-ready house banger“, with it “unmistakably [being] Williams’ voice on the track“.

Despite all the secrecy, we know this; the group is a trio, with Williams being flanked by long-term collaborators Tim Metcalfe and Flynn Francis. And the good news is that they’re not gonna stop there either. The group say that “This project has been keeping us busy in the studio throughout the pandemic, so we’re delighted to now be releasing the first single. We’ve purposely kept Lufthaus unrevealed, so we’re looking forward to releasing more music and revealing more material over the coming months.“

Of course, not telling people about this one track wasn’t enough to keep Williams out of the news completely. Aside from revealing that he was once targeted by a hitman back in the height of his fame, Williams has also been making big ventures into the world of art.

Fellow ‘lover of secrecy’ Banksy will be having some of his works sold by Williams, with an estimated value of around £10 million pounds being presented at Sotheby’s The Now Evening Auction next March 2nd. Among these includes his famous Kissing Coppers, a work which was originally found on The Prince Albert Pub in East Sussex. Williams is also offering his Girl With Balloon and Vandalised Oils (Choppers), the latter of which shows helicopters ruining a pastoral scene.

If you prefer actually knowing the artist’s full name before investing in their work, don’t despair. The likes of Magritte and Picasso will also be on offer, with Magritte’s L’Empire des Lumieres expected to go for over £45 million.

If Lufthaus and secret dance tracks aren’t your style, you could always try seeing the man in real life. A list of live performance dates can be seen here, with a performance in Stoke-on-Trent’s Vale Park Stadium on June 4th.
