British rock band Bring Me The Horizon shared their unexpected metallic cover of Oasis’s Britpop classic ‘Wonderwall’ this January. The song made its live debut at The Summer of Becoming show in Cologne on 4 June, and fans went nuts for it.

The song featured on the setlist for the band’s show at Cologne Palladium. Introducing the song, frontman Oli Sykes shared his excitement with the audience, hyping them up for a heavy rendition of a British classic as he called out, “This is going to be the first time we’ve ever played it in front of a live audience. Be kind to us. If you know the words, sing as loud as you can and help us out. Ready to have some fun?”

Fans recorded the cover’s exciting debut performance.

‘Wonderwall’, from the 1995 album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory’ has had a number of standout covers from the likes of Ryan Adams and Brad Mehldau Trio. Though, none have reimagined the indie song with such metallic gaul as Bring Me The Horizon. Liam Gallagher responded to the band’s cover for Spotify Singles in a tweet where he says, “I fucking LOVE it”.

I fucking LOVE it

The response took the band by surprise, who spoke to NME at the Brit Awards this year about the cover. Drummer Matt Nicholls said, “We were expecting [Liam] to absolutely rinse us,” Sykes went on to say “We always usually cover stuff that no one has ever heard of, so we were like ‘Now let’s try to reimagine something that everyone knows. Make it easy for ourselves’. Here he references their lesser known covers such as John Murphy’s ‘In A House – In A Heartbeat’ and Anhonie’s heart wrenching indie track from 2016 ‘Drone Bomb Me’. The band covered Anhonie’s track in 2019 with an electric metal-pop rendition in the style of ‘Amo’, their most recent album at the time. The Sheffield-born rock band followed the Cologne Palladium show with an electrifying first ever performance at one of Europe’s largest rock festivals at the Nürburgring racetrack, Rock Am Ring. Moments after the performance, fans were already posting their favourite moments of the show on social media.

The Brit award winners will perform at Cardiff’s famed venue, St David’s Hall, home to the annual concert Welsh Proms Cardiff. James Dean Bradfield, frontman of the ‘A Design For Life’ rockers, has spoken on the importance and symbolisation of the group’s performance at St David’s Hall. “We are really excited to be playing St David’s Hall in Cardiff on August 12th for Radio 2 Live. I’ve seen bands and artists including The Waterboys, Echo and the Bunnymen, John Grant and Gary Numan perform on stage there, and myself and Nicky Wire busked outside of it in the mid 80s. Hopefully we can add to the musical memories we have experienced there.”

Head of Radio 2, Helen Thomas has also expressed the station’s excitement for the new concert series. Thomas states the purpose of the new series, Radio 2 Live, whilst confirming the other two acts included within the station’s productions. “New for 2021 and beyond, Radio 2 Live will take the spirit of our very special radio station around the UK. Manic Street Preachers delivered an incredible performance for Radio 2 Live at Hyde Park in 2018, so we’re thrilled to be bringing them to Cardiff to perform an intimate set for their fans in Wales. Listeners and viewers can watch these exclusive performances from the Manic Street Preachers, Texas and Steps on BBC Sounds and BBC iPlayer in September.”

Other acts included within the exciting new series are 90’s pop band Steps and Glasgow rock band Texas, the Scottish group known for their long-standing music career and multiple hit songs. It will be our first live performance in front of an audience in over three years and we cannot wait. It’ll be a great chance to play some of our latest singles and Steps classics and get warmed up ahead of our UK arena tour this November.”

BBC radio presenter Zoe Ball announced via her breakfast show the date and venue for Texas’ performance in partnership with BBC’s concert series, Radio 2 Live. And I’m thrilled to be performing for the first time at St. Luke’s for Radio 2 Live.”

Over the past year, Radio 2 House Music has done a brilliant job with performances from Joan Armatrading, Kelly Clarkson, Rag’n’Bone Man and many more, but now it’s time to get back to live performance in front of an audience. Radio 2 Live is going to feature incredible sets from major artists, in front of what I’m sure will be a very excited audience of Radio 2 listeners.”

Wargmasm’s exclusive socially distanced gig in London will go ahead as planned at the New Cross Inn on Sunday 13 December. The concert was originally planned for 18 November with additional dates added for 19 November due to popular demand, but had to be rescheduled during the second national lockdown. It wasn’t until few days ago that it was officially confirmed to go ahead in full compliance of London’s Tier 2 entertainment venue regulations, with two separate shows in one day. Earlier today, Liverpool nu metal/metalcore outfit Death Blooms were announced as main support, once again confirming the event will take place as scheduled.

The New Cross Inn in South East London re-opened yesterday with their full run of festive December events going ahead. The venue operates with limited capacity of people seated in their households or bubbles, provides table service and sanitising stations, and currently accepts only card payments. Thanks to the Music Venue Trust‘s support and determination, as of yesterday all Tier 2 music venues “have been made exempt from the requirement of a substantial meal to serve alcohol“.

Established only a year ago after a random encounter between Milkie Way and Sam Matlok, rising London duo Wargams has rightfully been getting a lot of attention this year. Delivering an explosive genre-bending mix of metal, punk and rap, they were named as one of the 5 artists you should know by Revolver in June, and were selected as one of the special guests to perform at the 2020 Heavy Music Awards. Wargasm’s debut EP Lapdance / Gold Gold Gold came out in February this year, followed by the explosive single ‘Spit.‘ in June and ‘Backyard Bastards‘ in September. Just a week ago, the duo premiered their latest chaotic video for yet another rebellious new track ‘Rage All Over‘.

Earlier in November, both Wargasm and Death Blooms represented the UK alongside Hacktivist and October Ends on the inaugural virtual Pulse of The Maggots festival organised by Knotfest in support of rising metal bands from across the world. The London newcomers opened for the symbolic main Rock Against Racism stage followed by Introtyl, Scarlet, dEMOTIONAL, Vended, Orbit Culture and Hacktivist themselves, while Death Blooms performed at the MusiCares stage with Once Awake, Thrown Into Exile, I Revolt, 156/Silence, Death Tour, VCTMS and Diamond Construct, with their full sets available to watch online.

Death Blooms have been building their reputations for few years now with a distinctive mashup of oldschool nu metal and hardcore attitude, and hailed by Louder for “packing more punches than a team-up against Thanos” and really standing out in the contemporary scene “unlike the legions of wannabe nu metal messiahs out there“. Following a debut self-title EP from 2017 and 4 killer singles from 2019, the Liverpool quartet returned this year with two brand new tracks ‘Life Is Pain‘ and ‘Anger‘ building on the momentum and looking ready for a solid first album soon.

The team-up of Wargasm and Death Blooms promises an explosive celebration of contemporary UK metal with a nostalgic nu/alternative metal twist and unforgettable hardcore/punk energy. On top of all that, this appears to be one of the few gigs to go ahead this year and a fantastic chance to attend a performance by two of the hottest rising bands in the UK, and ones to be talked about in the future.

Live in-person music is back indoors in Scotland with the first gig since the Covid-19 lockdowns that began back in March. The first show was played at the Ironworks Venue in Inverness, Scotland. Inverness is in a section of the Highlands that is currently in tier 1 corona-virus restrictions, giving venues the green-light to host small indoor gatherings.

Ironworks took the opportunity to book shows with local bands only, as bands coming from tier-3 Covid areas are not welcome to perform for safety reasons. Those who wish to buy tickets should note that they will not be permitted in the building if they are coming from tier-3 areas as well.

The show was headlined by local-indie band Torridon, playing to a maximum audience of an intimate 100; Ironworks usually holds up to 1000 capacity. Protocols for the first indoor gig were strict with attendees instructed to remain seated in their zones and follow the usual social-distancing guidelines.

We are delighted to announce that our first show since March is happening next Saturday 21st November. And who better to grace our stage than local favourites Torridon!

All in attendance were required to wear masks upon entering and exiting the venue and while walking to the toilet from their seats. Seating was done in four zones, 6, 4, 2 and 1 while only allowing up to 6 heads at a table between up to 2 households. Mingling amongst tables was strictly forbidden, as was dancing and standing for any reason other than necessary.

All tickets for this first in-person concert were done online via e-ticket, the box-office was closed to further show an effort to adhere to safety regulations. Sanitizers were placed throughout the building and upon entering Ironworks utilized the NHS Track and Trace platform so that all in attendance be protected and informed were there a case of the virus later discovered.

Ironworks director Caroline Campbell stated that this new form of live concerts is the new normal for Saturday nights. She went on to comment on the future of in-person music events, saying that it is going to be different. It is not going to be what people are used to.

Due to its level-one safety restrictions, Inverness is now historically paving the way for what the transitional period in live-music will look like throughout the UK in the coming months and perhaps years. As lockdown slowly lifts, venues such as Ironworks will lay the foundation for what is to expected for new norms in live music.

This is the first inkling of the light at the end of the tunnel. Importantly, this is the beginning of the end for the financial suffering that music venues throughout the UK have experienced during lockdown.
