The trip-hop icons will headline the South London event on June 6, which will mark the bands first festival performance in nine years.

Joining them for the weekend will be French electronic band AIR, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and The Alchemist, Mad Professor, and Palestinian musical 47SOUL.

Massive Attack have already announced that the event will be 100% battery powered in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and air pollution, continuing their dedication to concert decarbonisation measures with what they call ACT 1.5.

They first showcased ACT 1.5 at a gig in their home town of Bristol last year, which became the UK’s biggest low-carbon gig ever. 

The group unveiled a list of 23 decarbonisation measures which are adhered to at ACT 1.5 shows. Some examples of these measures include the entire festival site being powered by 100% renewable energy, all food being plant-based, a reusable cup system in place on all bars, and all toilets on site being 100% compostable.

Speaking about LIDO Festival being a ACT 1.5 event, Massive Attack member Robert Del Naja said: “To present London’s first ever 100 per cent battery-powered festival day with a dynamic range of artists is an optimum outcome for us.

“History shows it’s often the combination of art and science that overcomes the greatest challenges we face, so it’s good to see LIDO take learnings from our ACT 1.5 event last year and apply those technologies to where they see emissions coming from.

“Clean production beginning this journey to normalisation is good news for everyone, but especially for music fans that come to festivals and the local communities that live around them.”

LIDO Festival will run on five separate dates in June, with headline sets also coming from Jamie xx, Charli XCX and London Grammar.

In other Massive Attack news, they recently revealed that they turned down the chance to play Coachella 2025. Del Naja told NME: “We said no to Coachella for next year because again, we’ve been there once, and once was enough.

“It’s in Palm Springs. It’s a golf resort built on a desert, run on a sprinkler system, using public water supplies. Mental. If you want to see something that’s the most ludicrous bit of human behaviour – it’s right there.”

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the mockumentary is expected to blur the lines between documentary and scripted storytelling, capturing both the highs and pressures of being a modern-day pop star. The film’s cast includes actor Alexander Skarsgård and comedian Jamie Demetriou, hinting at a mix of drama and humour. Given Charli XCX’s history of innovative and genre-defying work, ‘The Moment’ is likely to reflect her signature bold and unconventional style.

Charli XCX first gained attention in the early 2010s with underground electro-pop tracks before breaking into the mainstream with hits like ‘Boom Clap‘ and collaborations with artists such as Iggy Azalea (‘Fancy‘) and Icona Pop (‘I Love It‘). Over the years, she has cemented her reputation as a forward-thinking artist, balancing experimental hyperpop projects with mainstream success. The singer’s sixth studio album ‘Brat‘ (2024) marked a pivotal moment in her career, propelling her from the fringes of pop experimentation to mainstream acclaim.

With ‘The Moment’, Charli XCX is once again breaking new ground but this time in film. While she has not announced immediate plans to return to music after this project, she has a packed schedule for 2025. She has been announced as the first headliner for Manchester’s Parklife festival and will also take the stage at LIDO Festival, where she has personally curated the lineup for her performance day involving artists such as 070 Shake and The Dare.

As production continues, anticipation for ‘The Moment’ is building. Whether the film will premiere in theaters or debut on a streaming platform has yet to be confirmed. However, with Charli XCX at the helm, one thing is certain – it will be anything but conventional.

This isn’t the first time the band have been involved in an event with an emphasis on climate awareness, with their last appearance in the capital coming as part of a surprise show supporting an Extinction Rebellion protest in 2019. They also commissioned a report from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in 2021 to assess the carbon footprint of live music, offering their findings out to event organisers in a bid to tackle the issues raised.   They put the report’s findings into place last year with their ‘Act 1.5’ shows in Bristol and Liverpool. They incorporated 25 measures that reduce the carbon footprint of the events, including incentives for fans cycling to the shows, serving plant-based foods, and using renewable energy.  

Speaking to NME in December, Robert Del Naja, one half of the duo, revealed that the band had turned down an offer to play Coachella 2025. He gave a damning critique of the event, saying, “It’s in Palm Springs. It’s a golf resort built on a desert, run on a sprinkler system, using public water supplies. Mental. If you want to see something that’s the most ludicrous bit of human behaviour – it’s right there.” Instead, they will grace a festival which has pledged to implement eco-friendly policies ranging from waste management to working with local suppliers and food partners.

Joining Massive Attack on June 6, are French electronic act Air, Forensics (the newly announced project from Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, and producer The Alchemist), and Tirzah, though more acts will be announced before the festival. Air will also join Massive Attack at INmusic festival, taking place in Zagreb between 23 and 25 June.

LIDO isn’t the only festival that has made sustainability a major consideration. Shamabala has pioneered green initiatives, from banning meat to using alternative fuels such as hydrogenated vegetable oil, solar, and hybrid power instead of diesel generators. In 2023, Glastonbury had a prominent wind turbine installed that powered food stalls. LIDO takes it one step further, suggesting the festival will be powered entirely by batteries. Zenobe provided the batteries for the ‘Act 1.5’ event, repurposing batteries from electric vehicles and giving them a second life.

Massive Attack’s activism extends beyond climate concerns too, with the band canceling a show in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, in 2024. As citizens protested against intrusions on freedom of the press and LGBT rights, the band released a statement, saying “At this moment, performing at the state-owned Black Sea Arena could be seen as an endorsement of their violent crackdown against peaceful protests and civil society”.

As LIDO Festival prepares for its maiden outing, fans of Massive Attack and the wider music community will be welcoming their push for sustainability in the live music sector, and will be hopeful that the event acts as a blueprint for others to follow.
