British house musician Leon Vynehall is to spearhead the next upcoming fabric presents mix. The project will feature over 30 tracks, as well as artists including Skee Mask, Or:la, and Innersphere. Some of the cuts will be made especially for this mix, including Or:la’s “Allaballa” as well as a new track from Vynehall himself.

The fabric presents series is one of three series of compilation albums mixed by artists in the broad UK dance scene. The most recognisable of these series’, FABRICLIVE, is well known within the rave scene for its featuring of massive drum and bass artists, including LTJ Bukem, dBridge, Grooverider, and DJ Marky. Additionally, it includes other huge UK dance artists from garage, house, techno, and dubstep, with their last iteration in 2018 featuring Kode9 and Burial. This series ran from 2001 to 2018.

Conversely to the pedigree that FABRICLIVE has within the scene, fabric presents began relatively recently, in 2019, with its first artist being Bonobo. This release was, however, a hit, with a one of its bespoke tracks Ibrik becoming hugely popular despite never having a studio album release. Despite fabric presents relatively recent history, it has still hosted some huge artists, including Chase & Status, Overmono, and Maribou State.

Leon Vynehall is still shimmering from the success of his last album, Rare, Forever, a record that found its way into many of 2021’s end of year lists. A record that saw him move away from the house that defined him, he displayed his myriad of influences from outside his familiar genre, with the first track “Ecce! Ego!” sounding as if it were lifted from an early Boards of Canada album. More possessed by movements and motifs, the album was a refreshing shift in style that built on the experimental tendencies of his previous record, Nothing is Still, that at times felt more of an experimental jazz record than anything close to resembling UK house.

His new single, “Sugar Slip (The Lick)”, is a comparitive return to form, yet still an experimental endeavor with a pulsing beat and stabbing synths. Released by fabric records, the single is to feature on the upcoming fabric presents mix blended by Vynehall.

His last compilation album came in the form of a DJ-Kicks mix, which displayed a stunning variety of artists from distant genres, including Haruomi Hosono, AFX (Aphex Twin), and Ellen Fullman. Heres hoping his fabric presents mix revels in a similar disregard for genre convention.

UK house DJ Leon Vynehall has announced his second full-length album ‘Rare, Forever’ – to be released April 30th – and shares two new tracks: ‘Mothra’ and ‘Ecce! Ego!’. ‘Rare, Forever’ is the follow up to his debut full length album ‘Nothing is Still’, released in 2018 – “a stunning concept record about his grandparents that incorporates ambient and modern classical music,” as written by Jamieson Cox for Pitchfork. The new album, in contrast, sees Vynehall for the first time investigate “who he is as a person and artist in the very moment, rather than looking to the past to discover what and who has shaped him.”

Announcing via twitter, Vynehall said: “to be able to finally share this feels, more than anything, like i’ve finally let out a long-held breath. time to turn the mirror inward. today we begin here.”

∞ NEW LP – RARE, FOREVER ∞
1/2 – to be able to finally share this feels, more than anything, like i've finally let out a long-held breath. time to turn the mirror inward. today we begin here. two pieces to digest – ecce! ego!https://t.co/H6d9rmi18s pic.twitter.com/Pe5T4RwQe1

According to a statement published by Vynhall’s label, Ninja Tune, ‘Rare, Forever’ “will feel familiar for fans of Vynehall’s DJ-Kicks mix or his eclectic excursions on NTS while simultaneously sounding unlike anything he’s ever done before.

“As much as there are dancefloor memories and moments, it’s not strictly a dance record — instead, Rare, Forever is the clearest representation of the broad spectrum of music he’s made to date.”

In the same announcement, Vynehall shared two new tracks off the record – his first music since 2019. ‘Mothra’, the Kent-born DJ says, is “the euphoric unfurling of ‘something’. Muted notes fluttering free before returning to the cascade we arrived from, only now with purpose.” Speaking on ‘Ecce!, Ego!’, he adds: “The tracks’ title literally translates from Latin to ‘Behold! Me!’ A fitting introduction to an album about my own psyche, I thought. It starts off where Nothing Is Still left off, but rapidly switches to something more fluid, perhaps even sinister. I kind of think of this song as ‘Envelopes (Chapter VI)’s fucked up cousin.”
