Bring Me The Horizon headlined Leeds festival last night and showed their support for Palestine during their set.

The metal band from Sheffield first played this festival back in 2008, and then again in 2022 when they co-headlined alongside Arctic Monkeys, but last night they came back and headlined solo.

Despite the band starting off as an underground metal group, they have become BRIT Award winners now headlining festivals.

The haven’t performed many shows this year, but the ones they have been in terms of production, including a futuristic set design which fits the aesthetic of their album ‘POST HUMAN: NeX GEn’.

Production included gaming-inspired animation clips throughout the performance alongside an avatar host providing commentary and appearing on the two stage monitors. They also had laser-like lighting effects, pyrotechnics and fireworks.

During their set, they did their cover of ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis which was released earlier this year.

Liam Gallagher said, “I fucking LOVE it”, after hearing the metal version when it was released. Bring Me The Horizon said, “We were expecting [Liam] to absolutely rinse us, but he said some actually nice things! It was cool and I think it went down as good as we wished it could.”

As the band left the stage last night, an encore of ‘Drown’ and ‘Throne’ was played as they bid farewell to the crowd, whilst waving Palestinian flags to show their support for Palestine.

Leeds Festival brings in many people each year, with this year having around 75,000 people at Bramham Park, West Yorkshire.

Bring Me The Horizons’ set brought fans feelings of nostalgia and happiness with fans describing the set online as being “the best live performance” they’ve ever seen.

Bring Me The Horizon played:

‘DArkSide’
‘MANTRA’
‘Happy Song’
‘AmEN!’
‘Kool-Aid’
‘Shadow Moses’
‘Wonderwall’

Reading and Leeds festivals got underway on Thursday and people have been speculating about secret sets that may happen during the weekend. Both festivals have got underway and feature major stars such as Chappell Roan, Travis Scott and Hozier. Initial speculation happened after people noticed gaps in the stage times and started discussing who could potentially fill those gaps.

Leeds and Reading festivals were once festivals for fans of alternative rock music, not attracted to the heavy metal music played at Download Festival or a fan of the radio pop hits played at festivals like T in the Park or Wireless Festival. Reading Festival began in 1961 as a Jazz Festival though pivoted to alternative rock in 1989, later establishing a second site in Leeds in 1999. Recently, Reading and Leeds have celebrated music from all genres and walks of life. This year displays all genres of music from the heavier Bring Me The Horizon to the pop icon of Chappell Roan and the the Rap star Travis Scott.

The first surprise of the weekend came when the Oxford band South Arcade performed on the BBC Introducing stage on Saturday. BBC Radio 1 and the band posted the following on Instagram:

Major speculation has been happening after Foo Fighters posted the following post on Instagram, celebrating their energy-filled set of 2019, now available in full on BBC iPlayer. Other people speculated are Lewis Capaldi, capitalising on his iconic performance in Glastonbury this year.

Another act that could potentially perform a secret gig is Wolf Alice. The London-based band have been growing in popularity as well as releasing their latest album ‘The Clearing‘ this Friday August 23. Rizzle Kicks are also rumoured to be performing this year, due to them recently headlining Tramlines Festival and the release of new music from the band. Other fans have also speculated on Olivia Rodrigo, due to her close friend Conan Gray performing. Conan Gray and Olivia Rodrigo recently released a line of friendship bracelets together and are famous for being celebrity best friends. This has led to speculation that Olivia Rodrigo may play a secret set, or at the very least make a special appearance during Conan Gray’s set, who plays at Leeds Festival tomorrow on Sunday.

Further speculation occurred on Reddit after this post, now unavailable, was posted on Instagram by the official Reading and Leeds Festival account. Fans noticed a gap in stage times on the Aux Stage on Sunday, with people speculating that Chase and Status will be playing due to their current UK tour. The poster displayed by the festival shows the silhoutte of 2 people with question marks overlaid on top. Chase and Status, the superstar DJ duo, have been releasing new music this year and their next official show is on 29 August in Las Vegas, NV, meaning they would be able to play the secret set to display their new music.

The festivals have still attracted huge names like Chappell Roan, Travis Scott and Bring Me The Horizon so the fans are sure to have a great weekend, despite whoever makes a surprise appearance!

After a five-year hiatus, Welsh indie rock powerhouses Catfish and the Bottlemen have teased their first piece of new music in a 6-second clip posted to their social media this week. The long-awaited snippet shows frontman Van McCann in slow motion as he walks down a hallway, shot in the band’s signature black and white aesthetic. Introduced by a whirring guitar line, McCann’s distant vocal can be heard singing the lyrics ‘Back to the graft again, just sold my voice for a long weekend”.

The teaser comes just a week after the Pacifier band revealed they are headlining Reading & Leeds Festival, while also teasing another upcoming show or potential tour that was announced through a photograph posted of a sheet of paper reading: “5:00pm, DOORS, 6:00pm, SHOWTIME”. Fans who are signed up to the band’s mailing list also received an email simply stating “Thursday February 22”, possibly hinting at further news surrounding live show dates and ticket releases.

Keeping their eyes peeled for further updates, fans have also spotted the same posters in and around Manchester, suggesting that the band could return to the city for a comeback show. Although the majority of posters have now been taken down, some were sighted most notably in the city’s Northern Quarter and opposite the O2 Ritz, a possible clue towards the hosting venue of the show.

Having not performed since September 2021, rumours began to circulate about the band’s future and whether they had split not long after their appearances at Reading & Leeds and outdoor gigs at Swansea’s Singleton Park and Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington. Now returning as a headliner at Reading & Leeds, they will also be joined by other huge acts such as Liam Gallagher, Blink-182, Gerry Cinnamon, Fred Again... and Lana Del Rey. Blink-182 are gearing up to take the festival’s main stage after more than a decade, while Gallagher is set to perform ‘Definitely Maybe‘ in full, marking its iconic 30th anniversary.

This year’s string of live shows will be their first since the departure of guitarist Johnny “Bondy” Bond in 2022, and is expected to showcase brand new material, their first major output since their UK number two album ‘The Balance‘ in 2019, which followed their Top 10 debut 2014 platinum album ‘The Balcony‘ and their number one sophomore album ‘The Ride‘.

Following a storm of speculation, Johnny Bond released an online statement in 2022, announcing that he had in fact left the band as early as March 2021, merely playing with them as a session musician during the summer shows. He commented: ‘To put it simply, I feel that both the professional and personal relationships had become entirely dysfunctional.’

He added: ‘I certainly don’t want this post to be entirely negative … You have given me some incredible experiences that will stick with me forever … I sincerely appreciate you and feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced all of this together and met so many incredible people.’

The band is currently made up of Van McCann (vocals) and Benji Blakeway (bass), with a fresh new line-up of other members soon to be unveiled. For a chance to catch a glimpse of Catfish and the Bottlemen’s return, tickets for Reading & Leeds 2024 are on sale now.

Much to the delight of her scores of UK fans, Eilish teased a last minute performance at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London-a far more intimate setting than the star is accustomed to. Releasing a poster to go along with the announcement, the show is a one night only performance and will be followed by her brother Finneas performing a headlining show at the same venue the next night.

Eilish, speaking via social media, said, “London! Doing a special lil performance for you. If you signed up for email alerts at my pop-up this week, you’ll get an email with a unique code to access tickets.” Finneas, Eilish’s brother and notable for his award winning production work on her records, will play a sold out show the following night.

Eilish is fresh off her headlining gigs at Leeds festival (25th August) and Reading last night (27 August). At her show in Leeds, Eilish became the youngest solo headliner ever to grace the famous festival’s stages at only 21 years old and can now boast both Reading and Leeds festivals and Glastonbury headlining slots. And the young performer certainly dazzled the crowd with a set that will live long in the memory for those in attendance.

The last time Eilish was at Reading and Leeds festival, the singer was only a teenager but, in the time since, she has become arguably one of the biggest pop stars on the planet-her albums and tours routinely garnering rave reviews and awards. Together with Finneas to accompany her on multiple instruments, Eilish treated the crowd to a massive setlist- containing a staggering 20 song set during both performances, which included the hit Barbie soundtrack song, “What Was I Made For?.”

But the singer showed a shrewd understanding of what her audience wished to see from her and peppered her setlist with career-spanning numbers that was sure to please both the uninitiated and die-hard fans. The set showcased what Eilish is both known for and what has shot her into super-stardom, particularly shining vocally on the more softer songs but then ramping up the excitement when belting party tunes that also had the crowd on their feet, jumping and dancing.
Those lucky fans that have been able to grab tickets to Eilish’s special Electric Ballroom performance are almost certainly guaranteed a once in a lifetime experience, the likes of which may not be repeated by a star who is only getting bigger and brighter.

Reading and Leeds Festival have been forced to make unwanted changes to their lineup and set times as US rapper Trippie Redd pulls out of the event at the last minute. The festival has also had to cancel one of two scheduled DJ Andy C’s shows due to fears over capacity limits.

Unfortunately due to capacity concerns within the LS23 arena for Andy C’s set, Leeds Festival has decided to reprogram the arena and Andy C will now have 1 performance at the Radio 1 Dance Stage from 9:15pm on Friday.

Pulling off a festival with the magnitude and prestige of Reading and Leeds without a hitch is always sure to be difficult in the best of circumstances, but the infamous festival has been forced into difficult decisions that may leave some fans feeling a bit disgruntled. Organisers had to act quickly when Hip hop artist Trippie Redd cancelled his slot at Reading and Leeds due to an undisclosed illness. Festival organisers relayed the cancellation to fans and ticket holders via social media platforms.

With many fans excited to see the US based Rap artist, scores of concert-goers expressed their dismay, stating that they would not be coming to the event at all. Trippie Redd himself released a statement saying, “I’m so sorry to announce that I can’t perform this weekend.

Less than an hour after the news of Trippie Redd’s called off set, Reading and Leeds festival had to announce that DJ Andy C would be losing a planned performance due to concerns over capacity. The British DJ’s set at Bramham Park in Leeds was cancelled after organisers decided to reprogram the LS23 Arena where the set would take place. With Andy C scheduled to perform twice, he will now only play one set at the Radio 1 Dance Stage on Friday night.

Despite the double disappointment news from the festival over the two artists, the weekends still promise to deliver musical elation across both locations. With a star studded bill that includes sets from Sam Fender, The Killers, Billie Eilish and You Me At Six, festival goers are spoiled for choice across the multiple stages.

And much like Glastonbury Festival earlier this summer, the BBC will be streaming the Reading festival via its iPlayer platform with The Killer’s set shown on BBC1 on Sunday at 11:30pm and Billie Eilish’s set on Monday at 11:15pm. The service will also be featuring past performances from the festival between 21-27 August.

The weather is set to dampen the Reading and Leeds festival this weekend with showers expected to hit both sites as well as the threat of thunder and lightning.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across the North-east of England stretching from Newcastle to the Leeds and Bradford area.

Met Office metrologist Jonathan Vautrey says “There’s a reasonable chance that some showers will pass over Leeds and Reading over the course of the day. Particularly for Leeds, they are within the yellow warning area that we currently have out just because winds are going to be lightest across that north-eastern area of England today. That will mean those showers are slower moving at times, so rainfall is likely to accumulate in specific locations a bit more.”

When talking about both festival sites he also exclaimed that both Reading and Leeds “do have the potential for seeing some lightning and thunder” during the Saturday.

My Vautrey also warns of the possibility of some flooding across Leeds which could cause logistical issues in and out of the festival.

Yorkshire is expected to get he worst of the conditions in particular, with the yellow thunderstorm warning expected to take effect until 8pm.

Attendees at Leeds will be hoping to avoid any thunder and lightning as Sam Fender and Foals are both expected to headline the Saturday night as Reading festival will be headlined by The Killers and The 1975.

For Leeds, the threat of thunder and lightning will only last the Saturday, although the festival is still expected to be exposed to the threat of torrential rain across the entirety of the Sunday with quick heavy downpours expected to merge alongside longer spells of rain.

The Killers and The 1975 headline Leeds festival on the Sunday whilst Billie Eilish and Imagine Dragons headline Reading festival.

Reading is expected to be less at risk for rain on the Sunday, however after some expected sunny spells in the morning, there is some possibility of showers as the day progresses into the evening time.

Temperatures for both Reading and Leeds will fluctuate between 19 degrees during the afternoon and around 11/10 degrees later at night across the entirety of the festival.

Both Reading and Leeds are expected to have sunny conditions as many festival goers exit the respective festivals on the Monday, hopefully ensuring for safe conditions and minimal disruption as thousands depart the festival sites.

— SOFT PLAY (@softplayband) August 21, 2023

The duo, consisting of Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent, last released new material back in 2019 under their original moniker Slaves. In December of last year, the punk performers announced their return to the scene-complete with new name Soft Play-citing that the previous group name no longer represented the pair as people or their music.

Wanting to distance themselves from the connotations that their band name inevitably created (the duo always maintained that the name had no reference whatsoever to race), Vincent and Holman opted for the change to Soft Play-a name that will attract far less controversy. Along with the name change, Soft Play also announced, to the delight of their fans, that they would be returning to pick up where they left off and begin making new music once again.

Speaking about the change to Soft Play, the pair said, “we are aware that people have differing opinions on the name, we hope you can accept and respect our decision and not continue the argument between yourselves. When it comes down to it, the music and community surrounding our band are what matter the most and we don’t want anything to stand in the way of that community being as inclusive as possible. Our music is for anyone and everyone.”

“Punk’s Dead” sees the band offering up a tongue in cheek nod toward their name change while also taking a (joking) dig at the people who have criticised them over the decision. The song also features, arguably, the most unlikely of guest singers on the track-Robbie Williams. Williams features during the bridge of the song, with Soft Play deciding to include the pop singer on the track after he expressed himself as a fan of the band and would be open to working with them.

Reading and Leeds Festival organisers have reportedly amped up their security measures in an attempt to “weed out” illegal onsite drug dealing operations. In an online article by the NME representatives/organisers say that the crackdown comes after the death of 16 year old Micheal Celino, who died last year at Leeds festival after taking MDMA that he had purchased from an on site dealer.

After taking the drug the teenager fell ill and was taken to hospital where he unfortunately died. The teenager’s parents called for a ban on under 18s attending future festivals. As part of an ongoing inquest into festival safety Festival republic managing director Melvin Benn said that it would be “very unlikely“ that an under 18 ban would be implemented, instead he proposed that “the festival will operate a drugs operation aimed at weeding out dealers and having them removed from site“.

New additional measures of high security have also been implemented in response to the teenagers death, these new measures include on site support hubs, beefed up security staff, sniffer search dogs on every entrance, all of which of course aim to reduce the risk of death to attendees who intend to imbibe illicit substances. Benn elaborated further explaining that “the intention is that no camper is 200m from a support hub“.

In recent years, despite its illegality, the reality of recreational drug uses relationship with music festivals has been reluctantly acknowledged but ultimately accepted by festival organisers, the official Reading and Leeds website even states that: “We do not recommend you take drugs, but if you do please bear the following in mind” on its drug policy page.

Practical precautions started to appear in the mid 2010s with the introduction of drug check kits distributed by British non-profit organisation The Loop in an attempt to reduce harm to drug takers. However despite the existence of progressive benevolent precaution providers like The Loop, according to The Guardian at least 14 younger people aged 18 or under have died as result of taking illicit drugs at a music festival, a statistic that points further towards the need for honest and open drug education and awareness instead of inspiring endless debates that subject those that willingly choose to use drugs to supplementary stigmatisation.

On a lighter note last month Reading and Leeds festival confirmed that The 1975 would be the events final headliners after Lewis Capaldi dropped out. This years other headliners include Billie Eilish, The Killers, Foals, Imagine Dragons and Sam Fender. Other acts also included in this years line up are Wet Leg, Steve Lacy, Bicep, Becky Hill, Central Cee and many many more. Reading and Leeds Festival takes place on 25th-27th of August 2023.

With August Bank Holiday weekend just around the corner, concert-goers are gearing up for Reading and Leeds Festival 2023 which, as usual, boasts a massive line-up featuring some of the hottest acts around the world.

The UK’s second biggest music event returns to Richfield Avenue and Bramham Park from August 25-27, promising ticket-holders a pop spectacle with all the bells and whistles. This year’s addition sees The 1975, Foals, Billie Eilish, The Killers, Sam Fender and Imagine Dragons all topping the bill alongside a plethora of lesser-known bands and artists.

The 1975 were a late addition and will be replacing Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi, who is taking a break from all live performances following a bout of mental and physical complications.

Weather-wise, forecasts suggest a fairly tame weekend, with both Reading and Leeds due a little rain and and accompanying light breeze. Temperatures at Reading are set to peak at 21°, while Leeds is expected to reach 19°.

Ahead of the next week’s event, and with tickets still available, the official Reading and Leeds websites have published the stage times for each act.

Foals have released the Dan Carey remix of their track “2AM” as a teaser of what’s to come from their upcoming dub remix of their critically acclaimed 2022 album, Life is Yours.

The project, called Life is Dub, is set to be released as part of 2023’s Record Store Day exclusive releases on 22nd April 2023.

Foals revealed that they’d be teaming up with Dan Carey, founder of record label Speedy Wunderground and renowned producer, having worked with the likes of Fontaines D.C., Wet Leg and Slowthai.

Foals frontman Yanis Philippakis spoke to NME about the “2AM” release, saying, “This is the most interesting version. It’s one of the most full and dubbiest moments of the record. Some tracks are slightly dancier and in a more electronic place while others sound like full, sonic-heavy dubs.”

Philippakis continued, “Because ‘2AM’ is one of the biggest tracks off the record, it’s interesting how he managed to subvert it and have the lyrics take on a different flavour. It’s got more of a darker, late-night swagger than the original.”

“Now it’s 2AM, there are no buses, no streetlights working, and the streets are piled high with trash. I like it. It’s this kind of Knight Rider vibe to it.”

The band have been clear on their vision for the dub reimagining of Life is Yours, telling NME “It’s not like we’re going, ‘Oh, here are some extra tracks’ or, ‘Here’s the record remixed by a bunch of different people’. It’s just taking all of the material that’s there and getting deep with it.”

“It’s like being presented with a photograph of the album and this is the negative that you’ve never seen. It’s a total invert. If ‘Life Is Yours’ is a daytime summer record, full of light with these clean white lines, then this is literally a colour negative. It’s a sweaty and unclean flip of it.”

Foals decided to work with Dan Carey on this project as they believe him to be “an amazing chameleon” in his musical abilities.

Speaking on Carey, Philippakis said, “He’s got a renaissance ability to look at all aspects of music; especially with recording. He’s adaptable and can fit in with whatever an artist requires. He’s working a lot so he’s really in the groove. He never stops and that gives him this incredible rhythm and routine where he’s always on his game. ”

The band hope that they’ll reach a new audience with their new sound, and are keen to get “people into record shops” with their exclusive Record Store Day 2023 release.

Foals are set to headline Reading & Leeds Festival this summer. Purchase tickets here.
