The American electronic dance-punk band will take over the intimate South London venue through to Sunday, 22nd June.

The residency marks a return to familiar ground for the band, who played a sold-out six-night run at Brixton in 2022. This time around, all eight dates sold out swiftly, confirming the band’s enduring appeal.

Opening the show with ‘You Wanted A Hit’, frontman James Murphy addressed the crowd: “We played here a few years ago and we really liked it. Now we’re back, and we really appreciate that you came to see us. We don’t take it for granted.” Mid-set, Murphy explained the band’s choice to return to Brixton instead of opting for a larger venue: “We like to play in rooms that have some character and some love in them”.

The beloved dance-punk revival band were formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2002 by James Murphy and are signed to his own DFA Records label. Their sound fuses punk attitude with dance-floor rhythms, earning them critical acclaim and a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2018 for ‘tonite’. Their live performances are known for sonic complexity, with a line-up featuring guitars, bass, drums, synthesizers, pianos, and a variety of percussion instruments.

Backed by a nine-piece band, the 55-year-old Murphy led an electrifying two-hour set bursting with hits, including ‘I Can Change’, ‘All My Friends’, ‘Dance Yrself Clean’ and ‘Someone Great‘. More recent singles ‘new body rhumba’ (2022) and ‘x-ray eyes‘ (2024) also featured, as the packed venue sang along to every word.

Murphy was in typically playful form, shimmying across the stage in a neon green T-shirt, straddling monitors and delivering a tongue-in-cheek rendition of ‘New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down’, complete with faux-crooner vocal intonations and a dramatic tempo shift.

The band entered the stage to The Beach Boys’ ‘Good Vibrations’, a touching tribute to the late Brian Wilson, whose passing was announced the previous day. During the intermission, they exited to Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘Hot Fun in the Summertime’, in homage to Sly Stone, who also recently passed away.
Saturday, June 14

Sunday, June 15

Thursday, June 19

Friday, June 20

Saturday, June 21

Sunday, June 22

The announcement follows a series of teasers broadcasted across London earlier this week; projections stating ‘You are here (again).’ were spotted across notable locations, including Shoreditch’s High Street Overground station. The phrase refers to the band’s ’You Are Here’ tour, a 2024 fall residency at the Knockdown Center, New York City.

LCD Soundsystem’s UK show dates have been highly anticipated for a while now; the band have previously sold out a six-night residency at the same music venue in 2022. Murphy and co. last performed on this side of the pond at last year’s Glastonbury and All Points East festivals. Now, fans can look forward to an extended set list from the band at an estimated 4500 capacity per night.

Murphy’s musical outfit are also set to embark on a US headline tour this spring, before making eagerly awaited appearances at both Primevera Sound, Barcelona and We Love Green, Paris festivals, June 4-8 and 6-8 respectively. In a press release for the former, the band revealed an up-coming album in 2025. This follows the release of new single ‘X-Ray Eyes’ late last year – the first taste of LCD Soundsystem’s forthcoming material. However, Murphy still leaves the official release date up to the imagination of the listeners, saying: “So there’s a new LCD song called ‘X-Ray Eyes’. It’s the first single of what’s shaping up to be a new LCD Soundsystem album. Don’t ask me when that is, because we are still working on it. But it feels very good to be putting out new music.”

In 2022, Murphy revealed the reasons behind the band’s preference for residencies over bigger shows via a lengthy Facebook post. He mentioned that this format suits the group better since they can prioritise recording new material. The frontman stated, “There’s a thing with tour, also, where you invest so much time, energy, and cost into “getting ready” that you wind up touring for ages just to make it worthwhile…[residencies] and maybe we’ll do something like that every year. Just stay in shape, if that makes sense. And just make records along the way.”

Known for alternative rock/electronic classics such as ‘Dance Yrself Clean’ (2010) and ‘All My Friends’ (2007), LCD Soundsystem is the creative outlet for frontman James Murphy, accompanied by his array of musicians, producing an entirely unique Grammy Award-winning sound. Forming in 2002, the band have released five studio albums to date via DFA Records (of which Murphy is co-founder), including the critically acclaimed self-titled debut LP in 2005. Their last album ‘American Dream’ (2017) received a nomination for Best Alternative Music Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, its featured single ‘Tonite’ winning Best Dance Recording, a remarkable quindecennial mark of their career.

LCD Soundsystem made a powerful return to the UK stage at the All Points East Festival in London’s Victoria Park this weekend, headlining the event for the first time since their 2018 performance at the festival’s inaugural edition. The celebrated New York electro-rock group, led by frontman James Murphy, delivered a set that felt like a homecoming, filled with both hits and deep cuts that showcased their unique blend of dance-punk and electronic rock.

The band kicked off their set with a series of crowd-pleasers, exploding into the set with the raucous ‘Losing My Edge’. The band served up its joyous hit ‘I can Change’ early on, with the song’s distinctive whirling introduction being met with thunderous cheers.

The night took an emotional turn when Murphy addressed the crowd before performing ‘Someone Great’. “Yesterday, we lost a very dear friend of ours, Justin Chearno. We’re all fucking destroyed. We’re trying our best. We love him and miss him. This sucks. Thank you for being here and being a part of it,” Murphy said. Chearno, a co-founding partner with Murphy of the Michelin-starred restaurant and wine bar ‘The Four Horsemen’ in Brooklyn, New York, passed away this week, and the band’s grief shone through the performance and provided a poignant subtext to the many of Murphy’s songs that deal with issues of loss.

Later in the set Murphy embraced keyboardist Nancy Whang during the closing of ‘Dance Yrself Clean’, before dedicating a heartfelt rendition of ‘New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down’ to Chearno, which met a rapturous reception from the crowd.

Since their founding in Brooklyn in 2002 by Murphy, LCD Soundsystem have become a leading influence in the garage, indie, and electronic genres. Their debut single, “Losing My Edge,” released in 2002, became an underground hit, setting the stage for their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2005. This album earned them a Grammy nomination and solidified their place in the music industry. Their follow-up albums, Sound of Silver (2007) and This Is Happening (2010), further cemented their status, with the latter becoming their first top-ten album in the U.S. Despite a brief disbandment in 2011, LCD Soundsystem reunited in 2015 and released “American Dream” in 2017, which debuted at number one on the US charts.

Against the backdrop of grief, the band’s penchant for capturing the wistful and the bittersweet in their songs came into sharp focus. Finishing the set with the fan-favourite, eternally-escalating ‘All My Friends’, the tender and vulnerable notes of Murphy’s lyricism had perhaps never been more fitting. Despite the underlying sorrow, though, LCD Soundsystem proved they have lost none of their sonic might, as the performance proved a showcase of the band’s enduring appeal and their ability to connect with fans with a combination of visceral dance floor energy and emotional incisiveness that few artists have managed.

All Points East festival, hosted in London’s Victoria Park, has announced its first wave of artists for 2024. Running since 2018, All Points East has consistently secured performances from some of the most talented artists from across the music world. Past iterations of the festival have seen the likes of Icelandic singer Björk, Australia’s Nick Cave and his band the Bad Seeds, and American rock band The Strokes. This year’s event will see a considerable number of electronic artists on the bill, as well as stars from rap, rock, and Jazz.

All Points East will be taking place across two weekends in August 2024. Announced today, the supporting acts for the festival’s rock-centric Sunday show will include Portland’s, The Decemberists, and Washington’s Sleater Kinney. Off the back of their eleventh studio album, released this year, Sleater Kinney’s female duo will be bringing their soft rock tunes in support of The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie.

In addition to the rock show on Sunday, the festival has already revealed that the event on August 17th will primarily feature rap music, with British rapper Benjamin Coyle-Larner, better known as Loyle Carner, taking the spotlight as the headliner for the Saturday show. Joining Carner on the same day will be legendary hip-hop artist Nas. A familiar name to all hip-hop heads, Nas is best known for his debut album Illmatic.

1994’s Illmatic has proven to be one of the most influential hip-hop projects of the last 30 years, featuring vocals and production from A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-tip and rap pioneer Pete Rock. Since Illmatic, Nas has been at the forefront of hip-hop’s progression, working with some of the music industry’s biggest names including Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, and Amy Winehouse. The 50-year-old artist has a long list of credits across the media landscape, from multiple films and albums to a feature on the PlayStation 2 classic, Tony Hawk’s Underground, Nas has left a significant imprint on hip-hop culture.

All Points East’s second weekend, beginning August 23rd will see American rock band LCD Soundsystem headline the Friday night. Among those playing on Friday 23rd will be British DJ and producer Floating Points and former outsider artist Jai Paul.

After releasing his demo BTSTU on Myspace in 2007, Jai Paul received considerable attention from the UK music press. In 2019, Paul’s first, and only full album was officially released, despite its unofficial leak occurring six years prior. Jai Paul has had an irregular and sparce musical output, having taken several hiatuses in between his releases. Last year’s Coachella festival saw Paul’s first live performance. His set at All Points East is currently Paul’s only booking for 2024, and with his skittish reputation, it is unclear when the next will be.

Although the double weekend event has only announced a select few acts, more artists will be added to the list in due time. Tickets for August 17th, 23rd, and 25th are currently on sale and can be purchased here.

Grammy-nominated punk rock powerhouse, IDLES has released the third single, ‘GIFT HORSE,’ from their upcoming album ‘TANGK,’ set to be released on February 16 via Partisan Records. The track serves as the latest indicator of the band’s musical direction under the production of Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Arcade Fire, U2), Kenny Beats (Denzel Curry, FKA Twigs, Rico Nasty), and IDLES guitarist Mark Bowen.

‘GIFT HORSE’ diverges from the album’s previous releases, embodying a lean and taut intensity delivered in the unmistakable style of frontman Joe Talbot. Directed by David Helman, the music video for ‘GIFT HORSE’ accompanies the single’s release, offering fans a visual journey into the raw and thought-provoking world of IDLES. The video features a distorted and dystopian, yet slightly familiar, day within a supermarket. Talbot comments, “Look at us go! Music and movement for you and yours. Be bold and ride us like the disco donkeys we are.”

The release of ‘GIFT HORSE’ comes on the heels of IDLES’ eagerly awaited comeback in October, marked by the debut single from ‘TANGK,’ titled ‘DANCER,’ featuring contributions from James Murphy and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem. In December, IDLES released another single, ‘GRACE,’ a slower and more soulful song exploring themes of redemption and introspection, adding another layer to the ‘TANGK’ repertoire.

The band recently unveiled an extensive tour schedule, spanning North America in May, June, and September, and the UK in July, November, and December. A substantial number of these upcoming shows have already sold out, some nearly a year in advance, but for those eager to secure a spot, tickets are available here.

To coincide with the album release, IDLES has expanded their tour schedule to include three intimate outstore shows in London and Bristol. The band will be taking the stage at Pryzm in Kingston, London on February 15, Electric Brixton in London on February 16, and playing a hometown show at the Marble Factory in Bristol on February 17. Tickets for the shows sold out within hours of release, a further testament to the growing IDLES fanbase.

‘TANGK,’ pronounced as “tank,” is promised to follow in the footsteps of their previous album ‘CRAWLER,’ which earned them two Grammy nominations. Fans and newcomers alike can mark February 16 on their calendars as IDLES prepares to unleash ‘TANGK,’ with a diverse production team and a series of powerful singles leading the way, fans can expect an album that pushes the boundaries of rock while staying true to the band’s unapologetic ethos.

Legendary American indie-dance act, LCD Soundsystem has hinted towards a UK Tour through a cryptic social media post. The band last played in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2022, playing 6 shows in Brixton’s 02 Academy.

Fans spotted a sponsored post across social media sites that indicated that the band were ready to tour the country. The post reads, “Back in the UK, 2024. Pre-sale sign up now live.”. The group last released music in 2022, with a song called ‘New Body Rhumba’. Their last full-length album came five years before in 2017, with American Dream.

LCD Soundsystem is comprised of mostly only James Murphy when recording music inside the studio but have toured as an extensive band since the group’s inception in 2002. LCD Soundsystem released their debut self-titled album in 2005, followed up two years later with the highly acclaimed, Sound of Silver in 2007. The group then released This Is Happening in 2010 before putting the project on hiatus, coming back in 2017 to release American Dream.

The band are currently playing across New York for there annual residency in the area. The band’s tour which they called the ‘Tri Boro Tour’, includes 4 shows at the Brooklyn Steel, 5 shows in Manhattan’s Terminal 5 and 3 shows in Queen’ Knockdown Centre. The band will also be playing follow-up shows in San Francisco on December 30th and 31st.

When asked about the band’s future plans earlier this year, frontman James Murphy said: “We’re trying to just be a band, play music and play in cities that we like that want to see us. We’re gonna be a normal band in 2023. You know, make some music, put some music out, and hopefully play some more shows. Nothing crazy. I’m not gonna hole up in a stadium.”

LCD Soundsystem will be featuring on the next IDLES album, TANGK, where members James Murphy and Nancy Whang contribute backing vocals for the track, ‘Dancer’. The Bristol-based band were joined by LCD Soundsystem for the last song of their set at a Re:SET show in Chicago on June 25. IDLES Frontman Joe Talbot said: “OK, I want to make this very clear. We are forever humbled and very grateful to share a stage with LCD Soundsystem, I’m also humbled by the fact I get to sing an anti-fascist song to people with open minds and hearts. Thank you for welcoming us into your beautiful country. We’ll see you very soon.”

If there’s anything that we’ve learnt in the last few years of LCD Soundsystem; it’s that James Murphy simply cannot be trusted. If the grand sendoff that was their 2011 Madison Square Garden show (with accompanying live show recording and documentary film) followed by a new album after like 4 years wasn’t enough to convince you… then his current antics might. Back in June of last year, Murphy confirmed on an episode of “WTF with Marc Maron” that LCD Soundsystem were “not rehearsing” then when asked about the possibility of post-pandemic shows said, “We’ll figure something out when the time is right.” Since then, however, LCD have played a month’s worth of shows at a residency at the Brooklyn Steel, announced a further 2 residencies at Philadelphia’s Franklin Music Hall and Boston’s Roadrunner. He cannot be trusted.

Now, the usual level of trickery seems to have found its way to London. Projections of Murphey’s record label DFA Records have been spotted popping up around Shoreditch high street and around the Tate Modern in Bankside. The projections also came with the formidable slogan “YOU ARE HERE”, probably in reference to LCD’s breakout hit Losing My Edge and its borderline judgmental repetition of “I was there”. The fact that this is the DFA logo and not any kind of LCD specific symbolism could mean any number of things though. Perhaps a London date of the DFA 20th anniversary party. With appearances from 2manydjs, Black Dice (Live), Black Meteoric Star (live), James Murphy, JDH + Dave P, Juan MacLean, Justin Miller, and a load of other DFA alum, I wouldn’t mind a London date. But as of yet, nothing has been confirmed about what these teasers are actually leading towards. Watch this space.

If, like me, you are in fact living in England, and can’t quite afford a ticket to the states for a few days just to go and see LCD Soundsystem, you may have to be temporarily satisfied with their SNL appearances last week. On the John Mulaney hosted event, the band played 2 old fan favourites from their 2005 self-titled debut; “Yr City’s a Sucker” and “Thrills”. The show also confirmed the Guardian Angel status of the band after they burst onto the scene, “We’re the Guardian Angels and if you’re looking for a fight, you’ve gotta go through us!” You can watch the pro-shot video from the show below.

Last week, The xx and The National were confirmed as the first headliners of the 10 day festival, which will take place in the capital’s famous Victoria park, and will run from May 25- June 3. Lykke Li, Popcaan, The War On Drugs, Future Islands, Warpaint, and more were also announced in support of these two headliners.

Beck, Father John Misty, Phoenix, Flying Lotus, Glass Animals, Sampha, Richie Hawtin, Rex Orange County, Sylvan Esso, Dixon, Alexis Taylor and George Fitzgerald will also be playing over the course of the festival.

After the release of their long-awaited comeback album American Dream, and a subsequent string of hugely popular live shows, LCD Soundsystem will be kicking the festival off on Friday, May 25. Accompanying them will be a returning set from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who made their first live appearance for four years over the summer, at Austin, TX’s Sound on Sound Festival.

Bjork will close the first weekend of the festival, in support of her new album Utopia, her first LP since 2015, which will be available everywhere on November 24.

The Icelandic songstress recently came forward to show solidarity to the recent victims of sexual assault and harassment in Hollywood. Taking to Facebook, Bjork described her own experiences at the hands of an unnamed director. However, many suspect the director in question to be Lars Von Trier, the controversial Danish auteur who worked with Bjork on 2000’s Dancer in the Dark. Von Trier vehemently denies these accusations.

LCD Soundsystem member Gavin Russom has come out as a transgender woman in a recent interview with Grindr.

According to the interview, she began coming out as transgender quietly, earlier on in the year.

She said “this is my fifth decade being alive and in each of those decades, there’s been a time where I’ve tried to say, ‘Hey, I think I’m transgender!’ This was even before that word existed”

Speaking about Russom, the interview tells us that she has identified with being ‘along the feminine spectrum’ since a young age. “As a student at Martin Luther King Elementary School, she remembers going to school with black-and-white saddle shoes on, not thinking of them as un-masculine. They just felt right on her feet, like Cinderella’s foot sliding effortlessly into the glass slipper. The other students in her 2nd grade class, though, screamed that she was wearing ‘girl shoes.'”

Talking about the band, Russom described her bandmates as being ‘really supportive’. “The general feeling in the group is that will make the band better. ” She added “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, but I have my good days and my bad days. On my bad days, it really sucks and I wait until I get home to go to the bathroom—which is such a basic thing.”

Talking further about her transition, Russom discussed that one of the things she found hardest was her own transphobia, not believing that she can be a martial artist and be transgender at the same time. “I am someone who has spoken out on both women’s rights and trans rights for a long time,” Russom added, “but when I started to transition myself, that was one of the most shocking things. I’m carrying so many of these things around with me. That’s been challenging to work through— having those preconditioned societal ideas of what transgender women can do”

However, Russom wants to use her fame to give what the transgender world gave to her. “The space to be visible”

“For anybody who is struggling with their gender identity or who wants to come out and is afraid to, what would be better than giving someone permission to do that through my performance? That’s the ultimate. It’s what other people gave to me, so I’d love to pass that along to other people, too.”

LCD Soundsystem recently announced details of new album American Dream and a UK/EU Tour. Dates can be seen below:
