The Icelandic-Chinese singer last toured in the UK last year as part of the ‘Bewitched‘ Tour, and is now returning next year for her ‘A Matter Of Time‘ Tour.

Her career began to gain international attention in 2020 with the release of her debut single ‘Street by Street’.

The following year, she released her first EP, ‘Typical of Me’, which introduced audiences to her blend between classical and jazz influences.

She then released her debut album ‘Everything I Know About Love’ in 2022, which reached number 5 in the UK charts.

Her second album ‘Bewitched’, released in 2023, earned her a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, making Laufey the youngest artist to ever win in that category.

Her album combined elements of jazz, classical, and pop in a way that resonated with the younger generation, and it got the biggest debut for a jazz album in Spotify history.

Laufey’s classical upbringing gives her music an orchestral feel, whilst jazz inspirations from Ella Fitzgerald add to her vocals and improvisational elements in her music.

Her admiration for pop singers such as Taylor Swift allows her to add emotional honesty to her songs through her songwriting and storytelling.

Her first ever performance in the UK was as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival in 2021.

Last year, she performed in the UK as part of her ‘Bewitched’ Tour, which included sold-out shows in Glasgow, Manchester, and London.

She also headlined London’s Roundhouse and Royal Albert Hall.

She surprised fans with an impromptu performance last year in December at London’s St. Pancras Station.

Fans online were buzzing with the impromptu performance, with comments such as “STOP OMG” and “WAIT THIS IS INSANE. FREE CONCERT” on posts from the event.

Earlier this year, Laufey released her third album ‘A Matter Of Time‘. This album was inspired by her influences from country, Icelandic folk, and classical music.

Her upcoming tour next year ‘A Matter Of Time’ Tour comes after the release of this album.

The tour will start in Europe, before coming to the UK for two nights. She will perform at Manchester’s Co-op Live March 4, and London’s O2 Arena March 8.

Her two UK shows will be her biggest UK shows in her career so far.

After winning Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the Grammys with her album ‘Bewitched’, Laufey uses tender vocals to blend of jazz and pop, to create sonic nostalgia for listeners. This has established her reputation as an artist and has placed her at the forefront of bringing jazz into the mainstream. Therefore, it is no surprise that such a crowd waited eagerly to see her perform at London’s St Pancras.

Sat gracefully at a piano with a festive floral arrangement, the Icelandic-Chinese singer performed her most notable hit, released in 2023, ‘From The Start’, which has since reached viral status on TikTok with over 77 thousand posts under the sound. Alongside ‘From The Start’, Laufey performed a rendition of festive classic ‘Winter Wonderland’ and her own original festive track ‘Christmas Magic’ which features in Amazon Original Christmas Film Red One.

Just a day prior (17 December), Laufey made her BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge debut granting radio listeners with the spirit of Christmas by singing ‘Christmas Magic’ and a stripped-back jazz-infused cover of Darlene Love’s ‘Winter Wonderland’.

Laufey’s ‘Christmas Magic’ has since been climbing the charts, after debuting at 67 at the end of November, the track has since entered the top 40, peaking at Number 20 for the last three weeks. The track has also been pressed onto an exclusive 7” vinyl, which is available in limited quantities on Amazon.  

Upon speaking to Music Week about the growing festivities within her music, Laufey stated: “Christmas really is when I come alive.”

She continued to discuss the creation of ‘Christmas Magic’ and how it proceeded to make an appearance on Amazon’s Red One: “they came to us wanting a song which was reminiscent of this older Christmas music style that felt nostalgic and magical, which is great, because that is literally the only thing I know how to do”.

In the same interview with Music Week, the singer reiterated the importance of jazz and classical music and its ability to remain timeless and relevant to mainstream music. She continued: “Jazz and classical music are both genres that are often looked at like museum artefacts. It’s important that they stay alive and that there are people preserving them, because they are a piece of our history. But them, like all art, we need to feel the freedom to be able to take from them, develop them and be inspired by them”.

Laufey’s appearance at London’s St Pancras is yet another attempt to bring jazz-infused festivities to the masses and enlighten them with the beauty of modern jazz.
