According to Luton Today, the managing director of Festival Republic, Melvin Benn, has filed a request for a premises license from Luton Council. A premises license, under the 2003 Licensing Act, allows a given company to use a location to sell food and alcohol, as well as for performances, screenings, and indoor sports. Festival Republic is behind some of the UK’s biggest summertime festivals including Reading and Leeds, London’s Wireless Festival, and Suffolk’s Latitude Festival. The festival giant has been able to secure some of the most popular names in music from both sides of the Atlantic. Last year, Wireless Festival drew in industry giants like Playboi Carti and 50 Cent, and Reading/Leeds festival brought the likes of Billie Eilish and Central Cee.

If successful with their filing, Festival Republic would host a new three-day event in Luton’s Stockwood Park. The proposed dates for the new event would fall on the spring bank holiday, Saturday, May 25th to Monday, May 27th. As well as performances, Benn’s application has been reported to propose “a funfair and sponsor activations”. Mirroring the format of the company’s other festivals, the proposed event will likely include the all the bells and whistles associated with their mainline stage shows.

Although Luton Council has already discussed this application, their decision has not yet been made public. For many, festivals can be seen as great economic boost to an area, especially if the event does not provide camping facilities. Large numbers of festivalgoers need accommodation and food which can be provided by local businesses after the day’s shows have come to a close. However, this benefit can often come at the cost of residents, as noise levels will be elevated by both the event itself and by its sometimes-rowdy participants. It doesn’t seem likely that the proposed festival will be a camping affair as the documentation filed does not imply nor mention overnight accommodation.

Other factors to be considered in the council’s decision are the effects that a large-scale event, like this one, would have on Luton’s public transport infrastructure. This is especially relevant, as Stockwood Park is only 1.5 miles from the town’s centre. Either way, the final decision from Luton Council will likely be announced within the week.

This year is looking promising for Festival Republic, as Finsbury Park’s Wireless is set to announce its 2024 line up next week, and Reading/Leeds has already teased the first ten acts for this year’s extravaganza. Among those performing at Reading’s and Leeds’ 2024 incarnation, are DJ and producer Fred Again.., Lana Del Rey, and Liam Gallagher.

Update: As of January 22nd, Luton Council said that Melvin Benn’s “application was granted with minor amendments“. Due to residents’ concerns of increased noise, congestion, and anti-social behaviour, Luton Council has arranged for noise to be monitored during the event as well as a noise hotline that would allow locals to complain about disruption in residential areas.

Post-punk legend Siouxsie has finally emerged from under the rocks after a decade-long break from performing. She has come back with an added 3 live gigs in Europe and is ready to kick off this coming 3rd of May in Brussels.

The five shows will take place in scattered areas around the world. The lucky chosen cities include Brussels followed by Amsterdam, Milan, California and Suffolk, UK. Two of which she will be headlining festivals Latitude and Cruel World. However, it is not yet established whether these are the final and only dates she will be offering her fans. It is suspected se could be making a couple more stops before making her way back to the UK for her, current, final show.

She will be performing a headline show at Cruel World Festival on the Saturday, 20th of May alongside artists Iggy Pop, Billy Idol, Love and Rockets, The Human League, etc. It is a recently established festival based in the Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Founded in 2020 and dedicated to showcasing bands belonging to the new wave, post-punk, gothic rock and alternative rock scenes. Perfectly fit to be lead by such an iconic figure in said music scene. Her other headline show is at Latitude Festival on the Sunday, 23rd of July based in east England in Henham Park, Suffolk, playing alongside George Ezra, Paolo Nutini, Pulp, and many more.
Siouxsie’s last performance sits back in 2013 when she was invited to sing at Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival, held in the Royal Festival Hall in London. The crowd were blessed with a hell of a show featuring a selection of her best 80’s and 90’s hits. She and her band, much to everyone’s welcomed surprise, played almost the whole Banshees album Kaleidoscope from the 80’s. Little did they know that that would be the last taste they’d be getting of her bewitching presence before her re-emergence now 10 years later.

Ever since her first ever appearance singing live at the 100 Club Punk Festival in 1979 she has become a spine-chilling music icon, a powerful female leader, a music culture innovator and the creator of over eleven studio albums with the Banshees. The rock queen hasn’t failed to put on a good show throughout her active years and, if anything, a trooper like her won’t come back quietly. Even at 65 years of age. Her coming shows are guaranteed to be a mysterious, entrancing and historic experience, in hopes of hearing all her and her bands best hits. Tickets for Latitude and Cruel World are currently available to buy online, however, the Brussels, Amsterdam and Milan shows are still to be released.

The band from Northern Ireland and Scotland, which includes Sheeran’s long-time collaborator, Johnny Mcdaid, played the closing slot on the Suffolk festival’s main stage last night with a fourteen-song setlist.

This time Sheeran returned the favour after Snow Patrol joined him for one of his secret shows at Latitude 2015 to sing the band’s hit “Chasing Cars.” Towards the end of the show, the band introduced Sheeran, and they proceeded to play Sheeran’s smash hit “Bad Habits” to the delight of the crowd. Sheeran then returned for the encore and joined the band on their hit song “Just Say Yes.”

Sheeran is currently on the European leg of his ‘ + – = ÷ x ‘ (pronounced Mathematics) world tour and seemingly took the break in his tour schedule to pop home and take in his local festival. Sheeran grew up in nearby Framlingham, Suffolk and now lives there with his wife and their two daughters. Sheeran recently finished the UK leg of his tour, rounding it off with five nights at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 1st. Sheeran will resume the tour playing the Stade De France in Paris, France, on July 29th for a two-night stint.

Snow Patrol are also currently on a European tour which will resume In Schaffhausen, Switzerland, on August 4th, 2022. The band announced on Twitter earlier in the month that they will be playing an acoustic show on August 31st, 2022, at the Mckee Clock Arena, Bangor. Tickets are available here, with all the proceeds from the show going towards turning the Bangor courthouse into a non-profit music venue.

Latitude Festival is one of the more relaxed and family-friendly festivals of the summer, with sit-down restaurants and an on-site wellness retreat adding to the friendly atmosphere. On Saturday night, the Oxford band Foals closed out the day “in vicious style…their 90-minute set is a celebration of their party-starting potency as the band further cement their place as guitar-driven masters of the rave,” NME said in their review of the festival. The always candid crooner Lewis Capaldi headlined on Friday, announcing to the crowd that the reason for the lack of new material was that he spent most of the lockdown “masturbating away.”

Snow Patrol, Sheeran and Capaldi weren’t the only British musical acts making waves at the festival, with Welsh legends, The Manic Street Preachers taking the stage before Snow Patrol. NME saying that the band’s performance of their song, “If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next” felt “particularly poignant, especially with so many parents singing along surrounded by their young children.”

Snow Patrol’s latitude 2022 setlist:

“Chocolate”

“Take Back the City”

“Crack the Shutters”

“Run”

“Set the Fire to the Third Bar” (With Martha Wainwright on videotape)

“Open Your Eyes”

With the springtime slowly but surely creeping back into existence, that can only mean one thing; a massive influx of festival announcements and conversations about where in the world we’re going to be headed this summer. Suffolk’s own Latitude 2022 have now put forward their offering for the Henham Park Show. With headline slots from math-gone-party rock band Foals, Snow Patrol’s first Latitude appearance in 16 years, and singer-songwriter sensation Lewis Capaldi; the festival will run from July 21st – 24th 2022. See here for further information regarding the specifics of the weekend.

So far, the organizers have not revealed any information on the days each artist will perform, but I imagine all of the relevant information will come as we near the on-sale date. To get on top of all of the relevant information you can sign up here. Until then, however, we have been given the stage splits. Alongside our headliners, the Obelisk Arena (which I will refer to as the main stage) will also see the likes of American breakthrough singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers, mercury prize nominee Little Simz, and Rina Sawayama whose recent collaboration with Charli XCX took fans by storm. The main stage will also see the likes of a few more… let’s say old-school bands, with Manic Street Preachers, Modest Mouse, and Shed Seven all making appearances. It’d be unreasonable to put Lewis Capaldi on a lineup and not include James Arthur, just as any festival of this calibre needs a hit-filled set of bangers from someone like Example.

Next, we see the BBC Sounds Stage and its slightly different approach to selecting the tunes. With headlining slots by the one and only Phoebe Bridgers, dance-duo Groove Armada bring their mesmerizing energy to the tent, and Fontaines D.C. will be taking their new record Skinty Fia for a spin soon after its April release date. Appearances from Kae Tempest, Cavetown, Maximo Park, Porridge Radio, and a significant chunk of others should provide for most people with even a mild interest in music.

The Sunrise Arena will feature the likes of Let’s Eat Grandma, cktrl, and KEG to possibly introduce you to your favourite new band of the year, the Comedy tent is proud to announce its first headliner as Russel Howard; with additional appearances from The Horne Section, Rosy Jones, and David O’Doherty to name a few. And, according to the festival itself, “It wouldn’t be Latitude without an eclectic range of names from the worlds of dance, poetry, podcasts and more.” So expect a whole host of other talks, events, meetings, and activities over the course of the weekend.

Alfie Templeman the indie R&B artist has canceled his performances for this weekend’s Latitude and the following Tramlines festivals after he tested positive for COVID-19. Templeton has already been replaced on the bill by indie rock group Sports Team, who will be heading over to the festival this Saturday, July 24 after their Margate spectacular the day before.

The singer-songwriter wrote on his Twitter that he was “Gutted to announce that unfortunately I’m no longer able to play Tramlines or Latitude this week as I’ve recently contracted COVID, I’m currently recovering in isolation dreaming about the rest of the wonderful gigs that we have in store for you this year!”

With live music attempting to get up and running again, the fact that we’re still in the middle of a worldwide pandemic still can’t be ignored. As can be seen, this is something that’s already having an impact at Latitude, with two acts already dropping off this weekend’s bill. The other act pulling out is Fontaines D.C., which told fans that during routine testing, one of the band members tested positive for COVID-19. meaning the band and crew now have to self-isolate.

Headlining Latitude this weekend are The Chemical Brothers, Bastille, Bombay Bicycle Club and Wolf Alice, while Sheffield-based festival Tramlines will see The Streets, Royal Blood and Supergrass top the bill who replaced Richard Ashcroft as headliners. Ashcroft announced that he would be pulling out of his headline performance at the event as it is set to be part of the government’s Events Research Programme.

Data from the first stage of the ERP was published recently and confirmed that just 28 people who attended pilot events researching the impact of large-scale gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic tested positive for the virus.

It has been announced that Latitude Festival will go ahead this summer, as organisers confirm that the event will run at “full capacity” as long as “the prevailing situation in the UK is deemed safe”. The festival is expected to take place from July 22nd-25th at Henham Park in Suffolk, the event’s typical location since its launch in 2006.

Melvin Benn, the creator and founder of Latitude Festival, posted the following message on the festival’s official website: “Latitude is a very special festival and we can’t wait to get back to Henham Park, but we will only do that ‌if‌ ‌the‌ ‌prevailing‌ ‌situation‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌UK‌ ‌is‌ ‌deemed‌ ‌safe‌ ‌by‌ ‌the‌ ‌government’s‌ ‌Chief‌ ‌Medical‌ ‌Officer‌ ‌and‌ ‌all‌ ‌necessary‌ ‌safety‌ ‌protocols‌ ‌are‌ ‌in‌ ‌place‌ ‌at‌ ‌the‌ ‌event. To that end, I have been working very closely with a number of leading doctors including the Public Health Department at Imperial College London to demonstrate that it can be done safely.”

He continued, “We are confident that our hard work in conforming to the protocols, plus the fact that all UK adults are due to have been offered the vaccine before the festival takes place, PLUS the news of large scale test events rolling out in April and May, will mean that we really can go ahead.”

Having already been announced as part of the 2021 line-up back in May 2020, Bastille and Lewis Capaldi are still set to headline the festival on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th respectively this July, whilst the headline act for Sunday 25th remains unconfirmed. However, the festival has also announced Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit for the Saturday and Snow Patrol as a ‘Very Special Sunday Afternoon Guest’.

The acts that have been unveiled thus far suggest that the festival will not deviate from its indie roots. Before it was cancelled, Latitude Festival 2020 was also set to continue this trend with Haim, Liam Gallagher, and The Chemical Brothers announced as its headliners. Currently, the only act that is part of the 2021 line-up that was also part of the 2020 line-up is Snow Patrol, but there is plenty of time for that to change in the coming months.

Notably, Latitude is a multi-arts festival whose entertainment value stretches beyond simply music. As with previous years, the forthcoming event will undoubtedly feature an array of theatre, poetry, dance, cabaret, and comedy shows. In 2019, this included a screening of National Theatre Live: War Horse; an appearance from UK Poet Laureate Simon Armitage; and stand-up performances from the likes of Russell Kane and Lolly Adefope.

The festival has now joined the ever-growing list of British festivals that have announced that they will be going ahead this summer, including Splendour, All Points East, and Reading and Leeds Festival. With plenty more festivals probably set to follow suit, the buzz is certainly growing for a festival-filled summer period.

Despite not going ahead this year, Latitude’s lineup looked stronger than ever. With Haim, Liam Gallagher and The Chemical Brothers due to headline, ticket holders were going to be treated to a massive year. Unfortunately COVID-19 managed to get in the way and single handedly destroy any hope we had for 2020. Not being one to dwell on what if is important and Latitude have announced their headliners for next year.

The three names they have announced so far are; Lewis Capaldi, Bastille and Snow Patrol. This goes to fix the fact that Snow Patrol are returning to the festival for the first time since they had to cancel in 2019. The tickets go on sale this coming Monday (20th of July) from the festival website at 9am.

Your first Latitude 2021 music announcement has landed. @LewisCapaldi, @bastilledan and @snowpatrol Reworked all take to the Obelisk Arena next Summer, with many more still to be revealed…

Tickets on sale Monday 9am. https://t.co/PN7IQtd4SRpic.twitter.com/1MDphYHWJp

— Latitude Festival (@LatitudeFest) July 17, 2020

Other names such as The Lumineers, Michael Kiwanuka, Charli XCX and Mahalia had also been set to take to the festival this year. Hopefully ticket holders will not be too disappointed with who they have got to replace them, if the headliners are anything to go off then they should not have too much to worry about.

Latitude has been home to very prestigious acts in the past, with people such as Bon Iver, Bloc Party, Damon Albarn and even Kraftwork. This goes to show that even though it may not be a massive festival, it still has a lot of potential pulling power. Also with it being Lewis Capaldi’s first time playing the festival, he joins the rest of the illustrious artists who can say they have.

Having only started in 2006, Latitude festival has seen its name rise quite dramatically. Within four years it had already seen acts such as Florence and the Machine, Grace Jones and the Pet Shop Boys play. Not a lot of other festivals can claim to have done this. Though it was due to be a big year this year, absence makes the heart grow fonder so expect next year’s to be even better than before.

With the announcement, you can bet your money on devoted festival goers on getting excited again. It’s in the cycle of going to a festival, the anticipation of being able to finally see your favourite act live and being with your mates for a full weekend. Nothing comes close.
