Labrinth is well known for his work on Euphoria; his music and soundtrack became a key element to the show, creating a unique atmosphere and distinctive emotional depth necessary for the story. His work has incorporated many genres, including gospel, electronica, orchestral music, and more, reflecting both the composer’s personal style and the show’s complexity.  

Labrinth’s score gave life to the show’s and character’s intense themes of teenage life, love, drugs, and trauma. His work on Euphoria earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the song ‘All For Us’. Labrinth also appeared in the show during season two, episode four, in a scene where the main character, Rue, has a hallucinatory moment in a church and he appears as a gospel singer performing his song ‘I’m Tired’, which Rue associates with her late father.   

Hans Zimmer, notably known for scoring films including Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Gladiator, and the most recent Dune movies, is joining the composition for Euphoria. Labrinth expressed his excitement for this collaboration on Twitter, saying “another chapter in the Euphoria universe! So great to join Hans, one of my heroes in film score, and bring some new magic to this new season. Love x.”.   

Sam Levinson, the show’s creator, expressed on Twitter that “it’s a true honor to be working alongside Hans. I wrote this season to the score of Interstellar and True Romance. So he’s been ingrained in the creative DNA since the beginning. I’m really proud of the work Labrinth and I have done in previous seasons and am excited for Hans to push us to new heights.”

Labrinth’s most well-known songs on the show include ‘All For Us’, ‘Still Don’t Know My Name’, ‘Mount Everest’, ‘I’m Tired’ with Zendaya, who plays Rue, ‘Formula’, and ‘Forever’.  

Over the years, Euphoria’s soundtrack has surpassed one billion streams worldwide, earned award recognition, a connection with a global audience, and a massive contribution to the show’s success, which was the second most watched show on HBO when it released back in 2019. 

The show itself had a massive hiatus and delay of three years due to strikes, the creator’s vision, cast members’ availability, and some not returning, as well as the unfortunate passing of one of their cast members, Angus Cloud, in 2023, who played the beloved character Fezco. There is no current release date for this third season; however, they have been in production since January.  

The show was packed with special guests and a very excited crowd as Eilish herself had to stop the show four times and ask the crowd to calm down.

Amongst the guests was London-based rapper, singer and producer Labrinth who came out to perform their collaborative track, ‘Never Felt So Alone’ from Labrinth’s album Ends & Begins, released earlier this year.

Eilish wasn’t done with special guest appearances however as super group Boygenius took to the stage after wowing audiences at Gunnersbury Park just over a week ago (August 20) to perform ‘When the Party’s Over’, a single from Eilish’s first album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Her set comprised of huge fan-favourite singles such as ‘Bad Guy’ and ‘Happier Than Ever’ but she also performed rarities for the crowd such as ‘My Boy’ and ‘Wish You Were Gay’.

It wasn’t such a straight forward show however, as three songs into her set she stopped mid-performance during ‘Therefore I Am’ two times in order to encourage the crowd to check on the crowd amid crowd crushing, urging security to give out water to the crowd. “Can we get some water for these folks? Like where is security? Am I security now?” she frustratingly exclaimed to the audience.

The show was marred with crowd and security concerns from Eilish as she repeatedly addressed her frustration to the crowd by saying: “I haven’t played a small venue in literally six years. I’ve forgotten how to do this… I’m having an anxiety attack right now,” later following this up by adding “This felt like a good idea… Once. You guys look like you’re gonna die, take a step back.”

Her frustrations with security did not stop there as later on in the set she was still not happy as she addressed the crowd once more: “No one is answering me,”. She later had a break in the set to allow security to give out water and to provide a break for the excitable crowd, saying to the crowd: “Who needs an inhaler? I feel like I’m babysitting. Do you feel ok for me to keep going?”.

The intimate show was a surprise one that was only announced 3 days prior, in between her headlining sets at Reading and Leeds festival. Unsurprisingly, tickets for the show sold out instantly and fans were clearly fanatic about seeing a megastar such Billie Eilish at such a small venue.

Sam Smith’s voice is leant to another collaboration with Labrinth, who wrote and produced this song and it has all of the cinematic charm of ‘Still Don’t Know My Name,’ with the benefit of a refined pop vocal. According to Rolling Stone, ‘This is the second time Smith has worked with Labrinth, who produced the eponymous title track for their new album Love Goes.’ The two certainly seem to be a winning pair, with the catchy vocals of Sam Smith contrasting well with the more cinematically minded Labrinth to create real mature and original pop music.

The release of this Christmas single comes less than a month after Sam Smith’s third album ‘Love Goes,‘ released on the 30th of October this year. Despite a scathing review in The Guardian, which described the album as ‘plenty of gloom but not much glitter,’ the album has at least charted  well, reaching number two and has been on the charts for three weeks since its release. While previous efforts ‘In The Lonely Hour,’ and ‘The Thrill Of It All,’ performed better, reaching number one when they released in 2014 and 2017 respectively.

The album has not produced any of the big hitting singles that Sam Smith has been known for in the past, such the number one’s of the early twenty teens ‘La La La’ and ‘Money On My Mind,’ the best performing single from this third album so far is ‘Diamonds,’ which has only made it as far as number 11 since its release. Perhaps this is not a sign of decline for Sam Smith but in fact an indicator of artistic maturity, where the music being produced by this artist is no longer created purely for the purposes of chart success, but has a deeper meaning and purpose at work.

This latest release will certainly have got many Sam Smith fans into the festive spirit and might well have inspired a few of them to get hold of ‘Love Goes,’ which can be bought on CD or Vinyl from all good record stores or online merchants. While chart success may not be Sam Smith’s biggest goal anymore, it is certainly very exciting to see this artist beginning to really mature an alongside another great talent like Labrinth who is also a very exciting artist and producer to watch right now.

The video features scenes from the movie alongside shots of the show’s cast in action as well as shots of the singer performing his song. According to the video description on Youtube, Euphoria features high school students ‘as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma and social media.’ Labrinth himself is described as a ‘multiplatinum-selling singer, songwriter, producer, and composer.‘ And that his work on the Euphoria soundtrack has ‘garnered 380 million streams on Spotify alone.

As well as building a cult following from fans of the show, Labrinth’s foray into film score has performed surprisingly well for a niche genre, reaching a height of number 52 on the UK official singles chart and charting for a total of eight weeks so far. While Labrinth has scored bigger hits such as 2012’s ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ with Emile Sande which charted for an impressive 31 weeks, this new work represents a maturing of Labrinth as a musician which only happens to a few in the pop world.

While much of the full soundtrack would not make easy listening to those unfamiliar with the series, or for those seeking something similar to the work of Labrinth’s early career which include hits with the likes Tinie Tempah, still don’t know my name retains the cinematic edge that the rest of the soundtrack has, while possessing a chorus catchy enough that the song would not sound out of place on mainstream radio. The track has a dramatic edge similar to ‘Sail‘ AWOLNATION which gives it an edge on much other pop music available at the moment.

As well as his work on the Euphoria soundtrack, Labrinth’s 2019 was exceedingly prolific and also so the release of his album ‘Imagination & the Misfit Kid,’ as well as a collaborative project known as Labrinth Sia & Diplo Present LSD who’s album is called ‘LSD,’ and charted at 44 on the UK album charts after its release on formerly Simon Cowell’s SYCO Music label with the song ‘Thunderclouds,’ reaching number 17 on the singles charts.

While it may not be a return to the glittering heights of his 2012 ‘Electronic Earth,’ which reached number 2 on the albums charts, his recent work shows a real mature development to Labrinth’s musical career which does not simply repeat the same old tricks, but continues to develop and evolve just as the life of a human does. This is the sign of an artist who has the capability to truly be long lasting.
