Wide Awake Festival, held at Brixton’s Brockwell Park, have announced the next batch of names for the line up of next years festival. The festival has previously announced that Australian Indie rock band, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will be headlining the festival.

The festival orgainsers have released a statement saying: “New lineup additions include Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers, UK post-punk favourites Squid, beloved DJs Ben UFO and Helena Hauff, electronic pop legend Alice Glass, and Australian rockers C.O.F.F.I.N. to name a few, with yet more cutting-edge electronica and experimental pop artists still to be announced.”

“Expect leftfield Indie, Post Punk, Electronica, Techno and more across a line-up you won’t find anywhere in London. Our line-up has an equal gender split and 2023 saw us work further on our sustainable ‘Positive Policy’, which was set up to change the way live music events affect our planet. Environmentally conscious, socially aware and musical relevant, Wide Awake’s a party for people who care about music and more.”

Heavy hitters include, Young Fathers, an experimental Scottish hip hop who won a mercury prize award in 2014 for their album Dead. The group have gone on to make history by winning their third Scottish Album of the Year award with their latest album, Heavy, Heavy. They are the first artists to win the award three times. Furthermore, UK post punk band, Squid, from Brighton, have been announced for the lineup after they released their album, O Monolith, earlier in the year. The band released an audiobook to go alongside the album, written by Paul Ewan and narrated by Tim Key.

The other artists added to the lineup are Alice Glass, Charlotte Adigary & Bolis Pupil, Ben UFO, Crumb, Eartheater, Helena Hauff, The Babe Rainbow, Bodega, The Dare, David Holmes, Optimo, Al Lover, C.O.F.F.I.N, Decius, Etran Du L’air, Upchuck and Yhwh Nailgun.

A lot more artists should be announced for the day-festival in due course. Last years festival was headlined by Caroline Polacheck and hosted an eclectic batch of artists alongside the headliner, including Alex G, Black Country New Road, Viagra Boys, Jockstrap, Osees, Ty Segall, Joy Orbison and many more.

It is unknown when more artists will be announced for the festival, but more waves of announcements should be expected soon leading up closer to the date of the festival.

The day festival opens on May 25th, 2024, and the current wave of tickets can be found here.

Australian indie rock band, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, have announced tour dates across the United Kingdom and Europe for 2024. The band also announced shows across North America and South America dates for next year.

The band took to their social media pages to announce a whopping 58 shows from March to November of next year. The extensive tour includes festivals, arenas, amphitheaters and even stadiums across the globe. The band had previously already announced there headlining set at next years Wide Awake Festival in Brixton, London, but they have now added more shows across the United Kingdom and Europe.

The band have just released their 25th studio album, The Silver Chord, last month and previously released metal album, PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation, last June. The band are known for being prolific in releasing a lot of material, bringing out five studio albums in 2017 and 2022. Releasing only 2 studio albums this year can be considered a quiet year for the band, whom are one of the hardest working musical acts in the world.

The band have talked about the new album and its link to the previous one, saying the two albums are “birthed from the same womb. PetroDragonic Apocalypse’’s supercharged opener ‘Motor Spirit’ is in fact just a blackened and twisted version of ‘The Silver Cord’’s hypnotic first track ‘Theia’.” They also spoke of their being two versions of the new album, saying: More unconventional still, there are two different versions of ‘The Silver Cord’: one where their jams are ruthlessly honed into a tight 28 minutes, and another where they’re allowed to sprawl across an hour and a half.

The band, however, did release a nine-hour 86 track long live album at the beginning of this year, Live at Red Rocks 22, which is material stretched across three nights of three-hour marathon sets at the Red Rocks in Colorado, United States. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard also released another live album this year, Live in Chicago ’23, which is again very long, clocking in at 5 and a half hours, with material comprising over three sets across three nights.

Tickets for all of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s tour dates go on general sale on Friday (November 10) and tickets can be found here. The presale goes live on November 8th and can be found on the band’s official website here.

The rest of the line-up is yet to be announced, with more announcements coming soon. This year’s edition of the festival saw Caroline Polachek perform as main headliner, with local bands Black Country, New Road, Warmduscher and Los Bitchos also in attendance. Other notable acts from this summer’s party include American psychedelic/alternative rock legends Osees, Swedish prog-punk pioneers Viagra Boys and Manchester-born, Berlin-based post-punk outfit The Underground Youth.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard has long been a favourite of Wide Awake Festival owner Keith Miller, who has recently described his love of the band in a statement: “We’re so delighted to finally nail down King Gizz! It’ll be 10 years since I first saw them in the Shacklewell [Arms] when they hit the main stage. We’ve tried to bring them over every year, and they were our most requested acts from our fans survey. I caught them up at Manchester Psych Fest in September and it was unreal. You will not be disappointed!”

Fresh off the back of a headline show at the Manchester Academy in September, an event that coincided with Manchester Psych Fest, the prolific and highly energetic Australian band, who transcend music genres as easily as they sell out headline shows, will return to the UK next year to perform for thousands of endlessly loyal supporters.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have also recently announced their 25th studio album, The Silver Cord, and have subsequently released the first three tracks from said album, along with a combined music video of all three songs. The tracks, namely ‘Theia’, ‘The Silver Cord‘ and ‘Set‘, are a perfect testament to the group’s commitment to musical exploration, being experimentally electro in nature and distant from their garage and psychedelic rock beginnings, and certainly different from their previous album release, the thrash metal laden PetroDragonic Apocalypse.

Watch the music video for ‘Theia’, ‘The Silver Cord‘ and ‘Set‘ below:

This year’s edition of Manchester Psych Fest is just around the corner and the last of the stage times have been confirmed, leaving the city of Manchester open once more to the best psychedelic music the UK, and beyond, can offer.

The event, on Saturday 2nd September, will see Manchester City Centre effectively transformed into a festival ground, with multiple live music venues, scattered up and down, being employed as stages. The Albert Hall, on Peter Street, will act as main stage, while other venues, such as YES, Gorilla, the 02 Ritz, Canvas, Manchester Academy 2 and Deaf Institute, will act as the other, smaller stages.

Headlining Manchester Psych Fest 2023 will be American psychedelic rock legends The Brian Jonestown Massacre, who will be the last band to perform on the night at the Albert Hall. Fans of the psychedelic rock genre will need no introduction to BJM and the great Anton Newcombe who fronts the group, a group who, to this day, continue to be an ever-evolving vehicle for musical experimentation, having released their 20th studio album, The Future Is Your Past, in February this year.

Another main act comes in the form of American singer-songwriter Ezra Furman, who has previously said this will be her last European tour for a while. As such, this will be one of the last chances British fans will get to see Furman live in the flesh for the time being, and will therefore be a show not to be missed. She will be playing at the 02 Ritz and will be the last act at that venue.

Other acts that will feature at this year’s Psych fest include The Kundalini Genie, Allah-Las, The Lovely Eggs and Flamingods, all of whom are psychedelic rock groups. English indie rock band Sorry will be in attendance, as will the predominantly instrumental Cumbia-inspired London group Los Bitchos. Noise punk outfit Benefits will raise pulses in the White Noise room at Canvas, while post-punk bands Deadletter and The Murder Capital will electrify elsewhere.

A rather late addition to the line-up are The Murlocs, an Australian rock band hailing from Melbourne. They will play at the 02 Ritz at 4.30pm. This will not be the only show, however, for Ambrose Kenny-Smith and Cook Craig, frontman and guitarist respectively, as the talented duo are also an integral part of fellow Australian group King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, another group who needs no introduction to the fan of the psychedelic rock genre. The latter group will also be performing in Manchester on the same night, with a headline midnight gig at the Manchester Academy. The show, unfortunately, is not technically part of the festival and separate tickets are required to see the Aussie psych rock heavyweights.

There will also be several film screenings in addition to the multitude of music options, including a UK festival exclusive screening of Chunky Scrapnel, a road movie featuring King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and Dig!, a documentary on the love/hate relationship between American groups The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols.

You can purchase tickets here.

This year marks history for two major artists in a while. It will be the first time that King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard make an appearance 6 years prior to this year’s lineup. Singer-Songwriter Angel Olsen’s appearance at End Of The Road will be the first time in a decade.

End Of The Road owner, Simon Taffe expressed his thoughts about this year’s lineup. “This year’s lineup excites me beyond words. I feel so lucky to be able to bring my record collection to life! King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Future Islands, Angel Olsen, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Ezra Furman have put on some of my favourite live performances over the years and more recently Arooj Aftab, Greentea Peng and John Francis Flynn have blown me away.”

He continued, “End Of The Road is all about discovery, and I can’t wait to welcome a whole load of amazing new acts that have never played before like Biig Piiig, Flohio, Floodlights, Horse Lords, Infinity Knives and Brain Ennals, Moin, They Hate Change and a lot more! As always we will be doing everything we can to make it the best year yet, with plenty of surprises to come.”

Last year, in a five-star review of End Of The Road 2022, NME wrote, “It’s deeper into the forest that the festival’s most special moments occur- at the miniscule Piano Stage in a buried woodland clearing, some of the weekend’s biggest acts (including Kurt Vile and Lucy Dacus) perform quick and unannounced 15-minute acoustic shows. In general, there’s a gentle surrealism to the End Of The Road site- where else would you look up to see a glorious golden-green parrot squawking away in the trees, or a peacock enjoying the soundchecks on a bleary Sunday morning?”

The Australian psych-rock band, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard have announced via their Instagram account that they have to cut short the rest of their UK and European tour with 13 shows remaining. Stu Mackenzie has revealed that his long-term struggle with Crohn’s Disease is forcing him to return home for treatment. Soon after their headline show in Prague on August 5th, the band posted on Instagram to announce the bad news. For UK fans, this means that they won’t be playing at the upcoming All Points East Festival on August 26th in east London.

Mackenzie opened up on the post, “Hey everyone – Stu here. Unfortunately due to a personal health crisis we’re going to have to cancel the remaining EU and UK dates. For the past decade or so I’ve dealt with Crohn’s Disease the best I can. It’s a miracle we haven’t cancelled any shows in the past. But right now, my health is in really bad shape and I need to get home for some urgent treatment”.

He went on to reveal, “I’ve always kept my struggles with Crohn’s private. I guess I didn’t want to be defined by it. And maybe I’m not defined by it, but I’m certainly dictated by it. It’s looming threat has shaped almost every major decision in my adult life. I think about it and plan for it and around it every day. I know a lot of people deal with chronic illnesses. I’m sorry. It fucking sucks”.

Makenzie expressed his regret in being unable to continue the tour and said refunds for their headline shows will be available from Monday 8th August: “Sorry to everybody who bought tickets, to everyone who helped make the shows happen, our crew, our management and agents. We’ll reschedule the shows that can be rescheduled and there will be full refunds available for all the headline shows from your point of purchase on Monday”.

He closed out his statement by saying, “Being able to travel the world and play live music for people every night is such a privilege and I’m so grateful for the shows we were able to make happen in Ireland, Croatia and Czech Republic. Thanks for understanding and again, I’m SO sorry. Love Stu”.

The NHS state that Crohn’s Disease “is a lifelong condition where parts of the digestive system become inflamed”; saying that the main symptoms are “diarrhoea, stomach aches and cramps, tiredness (fatigue) and weight loss,” and that “The symptoms may be constant or may come and go every few weeks or months. When they come back, it’s called a flare-up”. For more information on Crohn’s Disease click here.

Melbourne psych-rockers/garage rockers/synth-poppers/occasional spaghetti westerners King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have released the second single from their upcoming new album Omnium Gatherum, entitled “Magenta Mountain” alongside a live music video for the tune. The new song follows along from the record’s lead single “The Dripping Tap”, which clocks in at a whopping eighteen minutes. You can listen to the single on all streaming services, and the music video can be seen below.

“Magenta Mountain” is a hypnotic tune, punctuated by a driving drumbeat and enveloped in the sounds of warm, whimsical synths. The vocals are very characteristic of past releases, featuring hazy, half-whispered singing, contrasted by soaring falsetto. Member Ambrose Kenny-Smith said of the song, according to a recent press release: “You know when you have a really weird vivid dream and it sticks with you like glue? One day I came into the studio and Stu was trying to write one of them down. He kept banging on about this paradise called Magenta Mountain that he had seen but none of us believed him. Every day since then he’s been still trying to convince us all that it’s real and one day he will.”

King Gizzard and the Liard Wizard are a band who have never shied away from long, winding pieces of music (one only has to look back to 2013’s Float Along/Fill Your Lungs to hear this), however “The Dripping Tap” saw the band releasing their longest song to date and fully leaning into the “jam band” vibe.

Speaking on Omnium Gatherum as a whole, guitarist and vocalist Stu Mackenzie said, according to a press release: “This recording session felt significant. Significant because it was the first time all six Gizzards had gotten together after an extraordinarily long time in lockdown. Significant because it produced the longest studio recording we’ve ever released. Significant because (I think) it’s going to change the way we write and record music – at least for a while… A turning point. A touchstone. I think we’re entering into our ‘jammy period’. It feels good.”

Omnium Gatherum will be the prolific Melbourne band’s twentieth album since their formation in 2010, following on from last year’s gorgeous, synth-rich full-length Butterfly 3000. Over the years, the band has explored many genres, including synth-pop, psychedelic rock, garage rock, thrash metal and even spaghetti western music with their 2012 album Eyes Like The Sky. The band has gone great lengths to experiment during their career, most notably using modified instruments that allowed the band to play microtonally (i.e. notes between notes), therefore allowing them to greatly explore their Eastern music influences.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will also be embarking on a huge number of shows across multiple continents this year. Full show and ticket information can be viewed here.

Today, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announce their first-ever double album, Omnium Gatherum, which is coming soon via their own label KGLW(and available for pre-order on March 22nd). Yesterday, they shared its epic 18-minute lead single, “The Dripping Tap.” Listen to the track below.

Following 2020’s KG and 2021’s LW and Butterfly 3000, Omnium Gatherum was the first time King Gizzard recorded together as a band since the COVID pandemic hit, and Melbourne placed its citizens under a series of prohibitive lockdown measures. Omnium Gatherum’s sprawling 16 tracks of gonzoid prog jams, dizzying pop nuggets, rubber-legged hip-hop odysseys and passages of pure thrash-metal abandon offer plenty for Gizzard fans and neophytes alike to chew on. Typically, Gizzard albums pursue a single theme or style – for example, Infest The Rat’s Nest’s eco-themed metal barrage, or Butterfly 3000’s new age trance-pop, or Nonagon Infinity’s endless garage-prog contortions – and part of the thrill of Omnium Gatherum for the group was the opportunity of new ideas without committing to deliver an entire album in that vein. It’s the perfect entry point for newcomers, and a solid treat for the faithful as well.

Lead single “The Dripping Tap” is an 18-minute krautrock/garage-psych jam – an ecstatic pile-up of motorik vibes, giddy pop and gleefully gonzo crescendos. It’s unmistakably Gizzard, with its restless, interlocking riffs and supernatural changes of mood, but it pushes the Lizard Wizard jam archetype a quantum step or three further. The album’s title, Mackenzie says, is “literally Latin for ‘a collection of miscellaneous people or things’” – a fitting sobriquet for Gizzard’s first-ever double album, and their boldest, most ambitious, most far-reaching release yet.

Conceived as a compendium of unreleased songs that had never found a home on previous Gizzard albums, Omnium Gatherum snowballed, and soon the group were writing and recording new songs for the swiftly expanding album. Its tracks were recorded at Gizz HQ, but also at their legendary, since-vacated clubhouse, 253 Lygon Street, or remotely at home. Lyrically, the themes are diverse, though the group’s concern for the ecological well-being of the planet remains a constant. Some tracks return to the synth-psych visions of Butterfly 3000, others revisit the fevered thrash-metal attack Gizzard coined on 2019’s Infest The Rat’s Nest, elsewhere, the group play bold, unexpected wildcards. Goofball prog, colossal rock-outs and enchanting folksong abound.

Bandleader, Stu Mackenzie elaborates: “This recording session felt significant.

The result feels like a Greatest Hits album, in its variety and the strength of the songs – only you’ve never heard any of these tracks before. It’s the sound of a group operating at their absolute peak, a group motivated by a deserved confidence that they could try their hands at anything. It’s also the sound of a group ready to return to the road after two fallow years – a handful of live shows in Australia, performed in the brief windows between lockdowns, has reawakened King Gizzard’s taste for live-action. To say that they’re “up for it” would be a dizzying exercise in understatement.

Gizz have also confirmed themselves for an extensive world tour, taking them all across the world, a long list of US and dates with pretty much every festival in Europe means that almost everyone in the world can get a chance to see the band’s notoriously raucous live performances. The only issue; a stark lack of UK dates. With 1 appearance at London’s All Points East Festival on Friday, August 26th, many Brits will be patiently waiting for a UK tour. Ticket information for the festival can be found here.

The Australian band has made their mark as quite possibly one of the most successfully prolific bands working today; despite only forming in 2010, the band has released eighteen full-length studio albums. The group has also proven throughout their career that they cannot be pinned down by one genre, as whilst some would categorise them as psychedelic rock, the band has subverted this label numerous times by releasing a thrash metal album in 2019, and most recently, they have ventured into the realms of dream pop and synthpop with Butterfly 3000.

Butterfly 3000 was released on the 11th of June to warm reception from both fans and critics, with Stereogum saying; “…King Gizzard magically arrived at their most generously melodic and open-hearted album to date.” The sound of the album is a slight change of course to prior albums; whilst it is still recognisably King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, the group has focused heavily on the use of modular synthesiser motifs, danceable drum beats and dreamy atmospheres. The album (along with the rest of the band’s musical catalogue) is available on all streaming services, and physical media can be pre-ordered here.

Butterfly 3000 is the second full-length album that the band has released this year, the first being L.W., released on February 25th. L.W. was also well-received and features a sound that occupies familiar ground for the band, with a focus on psychedelic elements and an “Eastern” sound that can also be heard on albums such as Flying Microtonal Banana (2017) and Polygondwanaland (2017).

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will be accompanied by numerous different artists on this upcoming tour, including Amyl and the Sniffers, SPELLING, DJ Crenshaw, Leah Senior and The Murlocs.

The tour will entail shows in South America, Europe and the United States of America. Listed down below are the band’s European tour dates. Tickets can be purchased here.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have subverted music industry convention today by releasing their new single ‘Automation,’ as a bundle of raw files on their website along with a collection of video footage with which they are encouraging fans to remix and make their one videos for the song. The most interesting thing about this release is that the single is not available on any streaming platforms whatsoever, effectively becoming the most effective direct to fan marketing stunt since Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows.’

This goes further even than Radiohead, however, in making the much coveted raw files available for free to all their fans they have effectively broken down the fourth wall which prevents many so called amateur musicians and producers from getting creative and reworking their favourite songs to make something new and exiting. Remixes have in recent years become almost as an elitist pursuit as music making itself with only the big names in electronic music getting access to the top artist’s materials to make their own statements. It is a very exiting precedent to see a band giving being so generous with their work and allowing absolutely anyone to have a go at making something.

According to NME, ‘the band tipped their hat to Grimes for the idea,’ of releasing the stems and video files with the single as the singer did the same thing when she released ‘You’ll Miss Me When I’m Not There,’ during lockdown this year. The singer said that the decision to release stem files was based on lacking the usual freedom to record in depth videos and the adoption of a green screen approach. Seeing the possibilities available in post production given a short collection of source material, Grimes says in the description of her Youtube video that she felt that ‘because we’re all in lockdown we thought if people are bored and wanna learn new things, we could release the raw components of one of these for anyone who wants to try making stuff using our footage.’

Where Grimes stopped short, however, is on the full scale boycott of streaming platforms which is the approach that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (KGATLW) seems to have taken on this release. While Grime’s ‘Miss Anthropocene,’ is available on all platforms from downloads on her label 4AD’s website or itunes to premium streaming on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music and even Soundcloud. The difference in perspective may be due to the content of KGATLW’s single which, called ‘Automation,’ deals with the thorny issue of artificial intelligence, a technology which already has its claws deep in the music industry through the algorithms which are used by streaming platforms like Spotify.

Unfortunately due to coronavirus the band have no shows scheduled in the UK for the time being, however the band have played a great deal of gigs in the country and were performing in British cities right up until October 2019 when they played at London’s Alexandria Palace. Other UK dates they performed last year include cities such as Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Nottingham.
