The Bristolian native Katy J Pearson has continued on her conquest of dreamy indie-pop that gives a fuzzy sensation to all who chance upon it. Pearson’s forthcoming album titled Sound of The Mourning arriving on the 8th of July 2022 builds on her impressive catalogue and is set to feature some exciting collaborators, namely black midi drummer Morgan Simpson, who packs some punch into her latest single “Float”.

The song’s title is a perfect hint at the diaphanous tone that the sound occupies, with a gorgeously rendered intro of mellowed wobbly guitars before kicking off into Pearson’s steady brand of folky bliss. Her aptitude for a memorable chorus evidently knows no bounds as we find another hugely gratifying payoff which is reinforced by the robust rhythmic backbone (courtesy of Mr Simpson). It’s exciting to think of how Pearson’s voice might evolve over time, as it seems set that she has the songwriting gifts to propel her into a long and illustrious career. Long may it last!

Check out “Float” in the video below:

Discussing her process in the creation of her new track, Pearson stated; “I wrote this track with Oliver Wilde, a founding member of the excellent Pet Shimmers – he’s been at the centre of the Bristol music community for several years. For the new album, I wanted to collaborate with some of my peers that I admire, so I jammed with Oli for a few weeks – he’d come round with his laptop and interface and we’d write songs together.”

She later added; “‘Float’ is one of the tracks that came out of those writing sessions and as soon as we wrote it I knew that it had to be on the record; it was one of my favourites to write and I love it. It has such an atmosphere and I think you can really feel the emotion and pain of the song; it’s about life experiences and all the things that lead up to certain moments. It’s quite nostalgic and given the past two years we have had, references wondering about when things will become more stable again.”

Sound of The Mourning is available via Heavenly Recording’s official site. Take a look at the full track listing beneath:

Until 31st May 2022, any donation made will be matched by the UK Government as stated via the ticket site, “Your donation will help the unfolding crisis in Ukraine, and match funding from the UK Government will also go to Yemen where millions of children are still in desperate need of protection from conflict.”

Those billed to perform at the War Child benefit show include IDLES, Billy Nomates, Katy J Pearson, Heavy Lungs, Wilderman, Willie J Healey and British icons Portishead. The growing line-up also includes Boca 45 along with guest DJs and Raffle, further announcements will be made to confirm additional acts.

Head of War Child Records Rich Clarke has released a statement thanking all acts involved, within the statement Clarke also describes the organisation’s mission and how the benefit show will provide support, “We deliver life-changing services and support in communities affected by conflicts to keep children safe and help them to heal and learn for the chance of a better future. The impact of the situation in Ukraine will affect an entire generation and there will be acutely vulnerable children who need our help to stay safe. The money raised by this gig will make sure that we can respond quickly to children who need that support right now.”

The benefit show will mark Portishead’s triumphant return to the stage, the HELP! Concert will be the group’s first and only live performance in seven years. The British pioneers had this to say about their upcoming appearance, “We are really pleased to be able to support the people of Ukraine by performing a few songs at this event in collaboration with the amazing War Child charity”

Bristol rockers Idles will be performing at their only hometown show for 2022 at the War Child UK event. The band are currently on tour and will continue their European tour dates after the concert. Frontman Joe Talbot has also spoken concerning the one-off show, “We have been kindly invited to play this show for the benefit of War Child. Please donate or sign up to this charity. We believe that nobody should endure war, especially children. Thank you,”

In 2018, IDLES released the single “Danny Nedelko”, named after the Heavy Lungs’ frontman. The single tells a story of strength and is regarded as a tribute to multiculturalism. Originally from Ukraine, Nedelko has given the following statement concerning the fundraising event, “Hailing originally from Odessa, this is a cause very close to my heart. The acts cross all genres including pop, psych-rock and afro-futurism, showing the full range of British talent. Speaking about the event, James Minor, Head of Music Festival at SXSWsaid in a press release; “For 15 years, the British Music Embassy Showcase at SXSW has been where the global music industry discovers what’s next in British music.”

The British Music Embassy typically takes over a venue every year at SXSW in Austin, Texas, putting a spotlight on the best new music from around the UK.
End of the Road Festival has been taking place annually since 2006. Its focus is on showcasing independent rock and folk performances from both established names like Baxter Drury to burgeoning acts like Let’s Eat Grandma.

This year, alt-rock legends the Pixies were due to preform alongside King Krule, Aldous Harding and Little Simz. Luckily, these artists have agreed to carry over their 2020 bookings to 2021.

This evening viewers will hear some equally interesting acts playing live from the festivals beautiful home in Larmer Tree Gardens, Dorset.

Squid are a key name in the current brit post-punk revival scene. They once described their music to NME as ‘the Coronation Street theme tune played on flutes by angry children’, a comical response fitting with the bands frequent use of humour to present social issues in their music.

On their 2019 song The Cleaner, singer Ollie Judge recounts an epic 7 minute long tale about how thankless it is to be a cleaner. His voice is such a major part of the bands sound. It has all the undefinable gravitas of David Byrne but is uniquely erratic, sounding like a child having a tantrum when he hits the higher notes.

Their double single Sludge/Broadcaster was released on Warp Records back in June. This sees the band going in a slightly different direction. Broadcaster is ‘built around an arpeggiated synth sequence’ and lacks the incessant guitar and shouting vocals that feature on most of their songs. Sludge, however, is familiar in its rhythm and the frustrated emotions being vented as Judge shrieks ‘Scrape my teeth out on the floor// I don’t want any more’.

The song is a commentary on todays entertainment culture. About three minutes in there is the repetitive noise of what sounds like a dial-tone, and the lyrics ‘On my bed, one eye closed// I’m fixated on the endless glow… sink my teeth in TV shows’.

Squid’s set is sure to be electrifying given the band is at is best live. And for something a bit less intense, Katy J Pearson will be performing at 8.50. Her sound is an amalgamation of Southern American country music, Welsh folk and straight pop. On her most recent track, Fix Me Up, Pearson’s voice reminds one simultaneously of Dolly Parton and Sharon Van Etten.

Her 2019 single Tonight opens with a string arrangement and then picks up with a plucky drum beat, the perfect blend of pop and country. Like country singer Kasey Musgrave, Pearson blurs reinvents the genre with a modern spin.

Other names like The Golden Dregs and Modern Woman will be performing, and Best Fit will be doing a Q&A with Courtney Barnet. Have a look at the full lineup here.
