Nash references several issues in ‘GERM’ including Algerian Welterweight boxer Imane Khelif with the line “Women are facing serious dangers. Not during boxing matches or from trans people needing a p*ss, but from actual violence that is carried out against them every week.” The singer bashes the criticism that the boxer faced for her gold medal win after claims that she had XY chromosomes.

Several artists alike have spoken out about the treatment of trans people recently. Notably, British pop punk singer NoahFinnce called out the accessibility of facilities at Download festival. He posted on social media about his shock that the festival would be abiding by Government guidelines and preventing trans women from using the women’s facilities and trans men using the men’s.

The organisers have since responded to this and confirmed that there will be gender neutral bathrooms at the venue.

Nash announced the news to her fans on Instagram, posting a story and writing, “Proud to be a new MVT Patron. The work I have been doing aligns with theirs. I’m ready to make bigger & better changes to my industry.” Nash and Berry were joined by music industry figures Summer Marshall, Robert Kilpatrick, Neal Thompson, and Colin Newman.  

Nash’s appointment comes as grassroots venues are in crisis, struggling to keep their doors open and closing at an alarming rate. According to the MVT 2024 report, a UK venue shuts down every two weeks, and a quarter of all venues face risk the of permanent closure. Even with pledges and donations, experts warn that there needs to be a holistic approach to the issue rather than short-term solutions that focus on immediate survival.

The ‘Foundations’ singer has been vocal about these issues, teaming up with Save Our Scene in November. Paraded around London on a converted fire truck, Nash used a megaphone to drum up support for venues and artists alike, as well as visiting the UK headquarters of Live Nation and Spotify to denounce the companies for failing the music industry.

She also made headlines in December when she joined OnlyFans in order to raise funds that would support her tour. Named ‘Butts for Buses’, Nash used the opportunity to grab headlines and make the wider public aware of the costs of being a musician.  

Nash’s visit to the Palace of Westminster on January 27 put her in front of the people capable of making a real difference. As the singer said on her Instagram, “This gives me the chance to meet MPs & advocate for live music & artists in the UK.” Her visit coincided with the release of the MVT Annual Report.

The report laid out the grim reality faced by some of the UK’s most iconic venues. Despite contributing £526 million to the UK economy, these spaces remain under significant financial strain, prompting MVT CEO Mark Davyd to call for action: “Venues are still closing, still under extreme and totally unnecessary financial pressures, still failing to be recognised when government designs policy, taxation, and legislation. We need action, not words.”  

Sian Berry has also been a voice for change in the fight to protect grassroots venues, doing so as the Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion. She published a letter on her website in which she fought against a planning application that would threaten the closure of local venue, Alphabet. Speaking at the launch of the 2024 report, Berry said: “I have seen firsthand the incredible and tireless work of the Music Venue Trust. As an MP, it’s hugely reassuring to have their insights and expertise.”

Nash and Berry are the latest to join a growing list of high-profile supporters, including Sam Fender, who has pledged £1 from every ticket of his tour to the trust. Sir Paul McCartney is also a supporter, saying, “Throughout my career I’ve been lucky enough to play in venues of all different shapes and sizes, from tiny clubs to massive stadiums all over the world. Without the grassroots clubs, pubs and music venues my career could have been very different.”

Although their efforts have very much been in the same area, the partnership between MVT and Nash, as well as Berry and the four others, will reinvigorate the movement and hopefully bring even more awareness to just how vulnerable these important venues really are.

MVT is a key partner in Independent Venue Week. Both organisations share a mission to support grassroots music venues and collaborate to amplify IVW’s impact. MVT provides resources, advocacy, and campaigns like ‘Save Our Venues’, which align with IVW’s efforts to celebrate and protect these vital spaces. Together, they raise awareness about the challenges venues face and highlight their importance to the music ecosystem.

Ticket fees for live shows have risen substantially in the past decade and most of the money made does not go to artists. Last week, the singer held a protest outside the offices of Live Nation, the leading global entertainment company, which primarily focuses on live events and concerts. after saying she is making more from selling pictures of her bottom on OnlyFans than from touring.

Boardmasters has dubbed Sam Fender one of the most-requested artists ever for the festival, and his appearance has been a topic of rampant speculation among fans. Joining other headlining acts Stormzy, Chase & Status, and Becky Hill, Fender is poised to fill the Saturday night headline slot.

Within a later snip shared via social media Dyer plays the role of a concerned father to his real-life daughter, the pair can be seen discussing Sunnie’s character’s boyfriend whom Dyer’s character states is a wasteman. Speaking on the new single, actor and musician Nash states the following, “‘Wasteman’ is about owning your power and being in a confident enough place to call someone out for their bad behaviour in a toxic relationship. It’s realising you deserve better. It’s the moment you recognise yourself again and see yourself smile after years of fighting for respect in a relationship. You learn over the years that the most important respect comes from yourself and that you can choose who you have in your life. Basically, if they ain’t treating you right and your friends are sick of telling you they’re not worth it, dump them. It’s giving London sass with a throwback to my UK garage and piano roots #nomorewastemen.”

The 35-year-old singer’s upcoming release will be taken from her forthcoming album, the LP has not received a confirmed date of release as of yet. Nash’s fifth studio album will also contain the 2021 singles “Horsie”, “Imperfect” and recently released single “Misery”, the first track to be released from the unreleased new album. In May, Nash released the single marking the first drop of new material in 18 months.

Speaking on the track, Nash stated, “I definitely went through depression. For the most part of the year, I just didn’t have the energy and I was kind of lethargic and very lacklustre, Rather than fighting that, I leaned into it. The singer continued to confirm that “Misery” is “about the trauma: the trauma of everything changing.”

The release of Nash’s new album will mark the fifteenth anniversary of her entry into the music industry and our ears. A Press release provides a statement concerning the release, “Kate is busy hatching plans on how to celebrate the anniversary of its release” The singer dropped her debut album Made Of Bricks in 2007, the album propelled the young singer into stardom and proved to be a huge commercial and critical success.  Once released, the album reached the top of the UK album charts and also sired the chart-topping lead single “Foundations”.

The new single comes ahead of a new album to be released later in the year. The album is a reflection on all the changes of the last year and the trauma of living through a pandemic, including the singer’s struggles with depression.

Nash spoke to NME about how she struggled with feeling ‘useless’ before finding a way forward and discovering how to still maintain being a musician throughout the pandemic. When asked if she’s released the song now because it feels like the pandemic is over, Nash responded that that wasn’t the case. She vocalised the widespread feeling that ‘there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, but there’s a fear it’s all going to go wrong again.’

The “Foundations” singer told us the whole new album will reflect the downbeat energy of the recently released “Misery” as it documents her struggles with identity and mental illness during the Covid-19 lockdowns over the past year. Having the structure of everyday life and any prospect of touring stripped away is something most musicians have struggled with. Nash also touched on the difficulty of processing the sudden cancellation of her hit Netflix series GLOW in October 2020. Nash played Rhonda Richardson in the hit show, working with a cast including Alison Brie, Marc Maron, and Betty Gilpin over three seasons.

The singer’s future plans include a covid-safe road trip across the USA for a mini-tour called the ‘Safely Out Of The Bedroom Tour’. This is a tour with a difference, and she’ll be streaming the performances via Patreon from wild spots in the States. Starting with the Sequoia forest in California, the dramatic backdrops will make a pleasant difference from the year’s worth of shows from her bedroom and living room. Nash hopes that the combination of performances and adventures on the road will come together into a mini-documentary series for her fans to enjoy.

She went on to say, “Pre pandemic musicians have been too busy touring & working to deal with the fact they/we aren’t paid fairly. We’ve got to stop worrying about the consequences of speaking up, the more of us that do it, the harder it is for them to ignore us”.

Nash further spoke out against the system of the music industry, and tweeted, “Plus more cuts if you’re signed to a label. Fans want to support fans so the current system doesn’t serve the artist or the fan. It serves a couple of huge artists, major labels and Spotify who make billions from advertising.”

Concerns over the streaming platforms became more prominent after a committee of MPs inquired into the economic impact the music streaming model, and the streaming giants like Spotify, Apple Music had on artists, and content creators, in the month of October 2020, and found out that the revenue generated from music streams in the UK in the year 2019, reached over one billion pounds, yet that “artists can be paid as little as 13% of the income generated”.

Nash’s comments come shortly after Radiohead’s member, O’Brien said, “Young musicians who rely on live income are really going to struggle” in light of the current pandemic and the lockdowns in place.

The announcement of Nash’s seven-date UK summer tour, came after the singer and song-writer was revealed to be performing at a number of UK festivals this summer. Nash has been announced to be playing, at Mighty Hoopla, on Saturday the 8th of June 2019, before her performance at Standon Calling, which takes place between the 25th and 28th of July 2019.

The Harrow-born singer/song-writer, Kate Nash started her career in 2005. It wasn’t until she uploaded her music to MySpace, that things really took off for the singer. Her debut was a single, ‘Caroline’s a Victim’ and ‘Birds’, was released, in February 2007. However, Nash’s breakthrough came with her 2007 hit single, ‘Foundations’, which she is best known for and saw her stay a number two, in the charts, for five weeks. While, her platinum-selling debut LP, ‘Made Of Bricks’, topped the album chart and earned the singer a Brit award.

Nash’s most recent music came at the beginning of last year, with the release of ‘Yesterday Was Forever’, which was released worldwide, in March 2018 and was her first album in five years. The album includes the tracks ‘Drink About You’, ‘Life In Pink’, and ‘Agenda’.

Speaking about her latest album, Kate Nash, said: “Yesterday Was Forever” is an excerpt from a teenage diary. I used to be mocked for being a silly little girl writing in her diary, but these days I feel like the teenage girl is far more respected than she use to be and it’s teenage girls that have fought for that and taught people that lesson. Yesterday was forever is about your dreams being trapped in a time capsule, being caught in a moment for too long, and looking back through heart shaped glasses.”

‘Drink About You’, is the first official track from her, fourth studio album, ‘Yesterday Was Forever’. Speaking about the single, Kate Nash, said: “‘Drink About You’ is about breaking up with someone and becoming obsessed with an idea of who they are, to the point you can’t think of anything else or move on. It’s an unhealthy obsession, you imagine things are better than they are and latch on to whatever you can about the relationship that could be turned to good. And you deal with the pain in an unhealthy way too.”

Joining multi-million-selling headliner Chaka Khan – alongside iconic acts like previously confirmed All Saints and Bananarama are the likes of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ winner Trinity The Tuck, singer-songwriter, Kate Nash and electric Australian duo Confidence Man.

The festival also promises floor-filling sets from dance legends like Crystal Waters, Ultra Naté, Livin Joy and Artful Dodger. Other experiences also include a dance class from Frame and movie choir Some Voices, Bongo’s Bingo, Ultimate Power, Savage Disco and Fleetmac Wood. The LGBTQ+ themed festival will take place in Brockwell Park on June 8th 2019.
