Simz (real name Simbiatu Ajikawo) took to Twitter yesterday to post an audio clip from one of the new songs alongside the cover art, tracklist, and title of her upcoming EP Drop 6.

This announcement comes in the wake of a series of posts that had teased its release, followed by a lengthy statement in which Simz detailed the toll of living and working by herself. “I don’t mind being alone” the statement began, “however choosing to be alone is different from being forced”.  

The stark black and blue artwork, in which a hand tentatively dangles a ball, was created by long-time Simz collaborator Jeremy Cole. As well as being credited with several music videos for Scottish hip hop outfit Young Fathers, the London-based filmmaker directed the videos for “Selfish”, “Boss”, and “Age 101” taken from Simz’s breakthrough album GREY Area. Despite her appearance as a guest on several tracks over the last few months, Drop 6 will be the British Rapper’s first original music since March 2019.

As no tracks have been released in their entirety, the only other inkling we’ve got of what Drop 6 sounds like comes from a short video Simz posted last week, in which she goes over some new lyrics whilst driving. If you’re desperate to hear new material, the good news is you won’t be waiting too long; Drop 6 will be available for streaming and purchase on the 6th of May via Age 101.
