Indie rocker Jamie T has claimed his first ever UK number one album, the singer’s recent release The Theory Of Whatever has been named this week’s number one. After a six-year hiatus from the charts, Jamie T’s new album has also topped the Official Vinyl Albums chart by selling the most copies on wax.

Speaking on his recent win, Jamie T told OfficialCharts.com, “Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for the support on the album. Thank you for the Number 1!“. The “Calm Down Dearest” singer took to social media to announce his award; within the post, the singer also confirmed the date for an upcoming show. The concert will see Jamie T headline a homecoming show at London’s Finsbury Park; the singer will perform to an audience of 45,000, marking his biggest show to date. The singer-songwriter will be joined by a roster full of special guests, further details concerning the event will be announced in due course.

Otherwise known as Jamie Alexander Treays, the singer’s number one album was released on 22nd July 2022 via Polydor Records. The Theory Of Whatever was proceeded by three singles, “The Old Style Raiders“, “St. George Wharf Tower“, and “Between The Rocks“. Before its release, Treays began to tease and promote the album’s release; on 27th April 2022 the singer confirmed The Theory Of Whatever’s release. The Theory of Whatever is the first release of new material since Jamie T’s break; the singer’s previous album Trick dropped in 2016.

Although The Theory Of Whatever is Jamie T’s first number one album, the singer has cracked the album charts top 5 four times before. The songwriter’s debut album Panic Prevention was released in 2007 and reached number 4 within the charts; the release was praised for its use of themes concerning youth culture and lyrical content. The singer’s second album Kings & Queens dropped two years later and charted at number 2; the album’s lead single “Sticks’ n’ Stones” also sired chart success and position within the singles charts top 20. Jamie T scored a hat trick in 2014 when Carry On Grudge reached number 4 within the album charts; Trick also charted well and placed at number 3.

Elsewhere within this week’s album charts, pop icons Bananarama have scored their highest position within the UK Official Album charts in 34 years. The duo’s twelfth studio album Masquerade has charted at number 22; the album marks their first top 20 release since The Greatest Hits Collection. The compilation album was the band’s first Greatest Hits LP and was released via London Records in 1988; via its original release, the album placed at number 3 on the UK Albums charts.

Earlier this month, Jamie T confirmed that he had added further dates to his upcoming The Theory Of Whatever Tour. Due to start this November, the headlining tour originally consisted of 10 dates and was initially meant to start on 10th November 2022 with a set in Newcastle. Due to popular demand, the singer added two more stops and will now kick off the tour on 8th November 2022. The second new date has been scheduled to close the series of live shows on 23rd November 2022 at Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse.

Earlier today, Jamie T took to Twitter to announce the release of his new album, The Theory Of Whatever. Fresh off his barnstorming set in the John Peel tent at last month’s Glastonbury, a show that NME gave five stars and said, “the returning indie legend delivered a brilliantly rowdy John Peel Stage headline set for only his second show in five years;” Jamie T dropped his new album earlier than expected.

The Theory Of Whatever is his fifth album and his first since 2016’s Trick. Rolling Stone UK says of the album, “the indie veteran’s first album in six years demonstrates why he’s become one of Britain’s most beloved cult musicians,” and awarded it four out of five stars. On the gap between albums, Jamie T told Rolling Stone UK, “I don’t think I’m necessarily very good at what I do and it takes me a long time to do shit well.”

The singer continued, “I don’t have a need to be seen the whole time, either. I don’t care and I don’t give a shit! I like making music, but it’s not incredibly important to me. I’d go as far as to say I detest being around all the time. I don’t want to be the type of human being who needs to represent themselves every week and tell everyone what they’re eating in order to be a good musician.”

Asked about the anxiety that has plagued him throughout his life and inspired his debut album Panic Prevention back in 2007 the singer told the magazine, “Yeah, I was struggling with anxiety, panic attacks, and I felt completely out of my depth. It was a constant battle, and it was hard to get help for that when you’re playing to 10,000 people, so you do struggle”.

When asked about his mental health now he opened up, “Yeah, I’m just happy now. I couldn’t give less of a fuck. If you take anything from this, I want you to know that I’m zen about this shit. I’m happy and that needs to come across. I’ve just grown up a bit and it’s why I don’t give a shit!”

After breaking a long silence and teasing us with the upcoming release of his new album, The Theory Of Whatever, Jamie Alexander Treays, or more commonly known by his stage name, Jamie T, has just announced that next week he will be performing his first live show in 5 years. The live show is set to take place at West London, Ladbroke Grove venue Subterania on May 11th. Tickets for the show will be available exclusively to anyone who pre-orders his new album The Theory Of Whatever by 5pm today. Link here

The Theory Of Whatever is confirmed to be released on 29th July via Polydor Records, and will include his single “The Old Style Raiders” (watch official video here). In a recent interview discussing the meaning of his lead single, Jamie stated, “It’s fighting to find something that means enough to you that you love. The fight to find that, and to carry on striving, to find something you love enough to hold on to” adding, “Rather than kid love or movie love or gushy love or lust love, whatever you have when you’re younger – it’s actually trying to fight for something that means more than that. It’s the struggle to find that.”

The singer-songwriter, from Wimbledon was just 19 years old when he started his career in 2005. 17 years later fans are just as (if not more) excited to see what 36 year-old indie star is going to bring to the table now in 2022.

In a recent interview speaking to BBC Radio 1 about his return, Jamie spoke about his anxiety of getting back on the horse and creating new music, saying “I was struggling to find my direction with the record for a few years, really… I went home one day, and I found this track that I had recorded, pretty much fully finished. And I was really upset, because I realised that I’d spent the last six months asking other people to tell me if something was good. Then I heard this track and I just immediately knew I’d kind of found my path.” Jamie has also articulated his excitement to get back on stage next week adding, “I missed being in a room with people and playing music…I miss getting in a place with people and have sweat dripping from the ceiling.”

Panic Prevention was released on the 29th of January 2007, with the songs ‘Sheila”, “If You Got The Money”, and “Calm Down Dearest” being released as singles before the full album was made available. The record’s namesake is derived from Treays’ experiences with panic attacks and anxiety, and the themes of the album deal with aspects of UK youth culture of the time. The album received consistently warm acclaim from most music publications, with NME giving the article an 8/10, saying: “Jamie T is a genuine voice, the sort of untrained, maverick personality that doesn’t come along too often. Britain, you’re honoured to have him.” Sonically, the album draws from a great number of different genres, such as rap, folk, indie rock, ska, punk, electronic and even skiffle.

Jamie T’s seminal debut album has already been reissued once before, as it was given its first vinyl treatment in 2018. As mentioned in the announcement, pre-orders can be found on the artist’s website.

Whilst very little else has been revealed beyond Treays’ confirmation that new music is indeed on the way, this is exciting news for fans, who have been waiting patiently for a new album since 2016’s Trick. Treays released a B-sides album in 2018, which is a collection of songs from recording sessions spanning from 2006 to 2017.
