Jacob Collier is headlining Love Supreme on Saturday, and this performance will be the singer’s only UK festival show of the year. Sunday’s headliner is Maxwell, whose performance will also be his only UK show of 2025. Other well-known artists this weekend are Nile Rodgers & Chic, Smokey Robinson, En Vogue, and The Roots, whose drummer, Questlove, directed the Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul. Notable acts this year also include Thee Sacred Souls, Durand Jones & The Indications, Brian Jackson, Sasha Keable, and Neil Cowley Trio.

The Band & Voices stage includes artists Grooveverse, Imaginary Millions, Mica Sefia, Charlotte Dowsson, and Tendayi & Friends. They will also host different workshops and dances on this stage, including Afrobeats Dance workshop, Brazilian Samba, Hip Hop and Funk Streetdance, and Reggae Aerobics. The festival consists of different stages: The Main Stage, The Big Top, The Arena, The Bandstand, and Bands & Voices. The Main Stage focuses on broader styles and genres as well as more well-known acts, including headliners. The Bandstand focuses on up-and-coming and local performers, and the Band & Voices area includes a mix of spoken word, dance, and cabaret.   

Aside from the incredible music, food, and camping, Love Supreme also has a wellness section throughout the weekend. Festivalgoers can take a break and enjoy wood-fired hot tubs, yoga massage treatments, cold plunges, and more opportunities to relax and recharge.   

The festival partners with BBC Radio 2, Nordic Spirit, Hard Rock Cocktails, Jazzwise, Teremana, and more. 

The original idea for this event started with wanting to combine the jazz music scene with the UK festival scene. Love Supreme consists of a diverse lineup with an important focus on including both well-known and up-and-coming artists. In the festival’s first years, there were around 15,000 people; it has now surpassed its ten-year anniversary in 2023, with around 24,000 festivalgoers. Love Supreme has now solidified its place as one of the UK’s leading jazz festivals.

In the heart of winter, on January 22 and 23, 2025, Bristol’s Beacon Hall and London’s Barbican Hall will resonate with an unprecedented musical collaboration. Jacob Collier, the Grammy-winning musician celebrated for his genre-defying artistry, is set to perform with a UK orchestra for the first time, joining forces with the 50-piece Britten Sinfonia.

Sharing the stage is Chris Thile, a virtuoso mandolinist whose prowess spans bluegrass to classical, and whose collaborations range from Yo-Yo Ma to Brad Mehldau.

Adding a familial touch, the ensemble will be conducted by Suzie Collier, Jacob’s mother and an esteemed violinist, conductor, and professor at the Royal Academy of Music. 

The evening’s repertoire promises a symphonic journey through Collier and Thile’s eclectic compositions, interwoven with orchestral works by Anna Meredith and Arturo Márquez. Highlights include Meredith’s electro-classical piece ‘Nautilus’ and Márquez’s ‘Danzón No. 2,’ alongside solo Bach from Thile and Piazzolla’s ‘Spring’ from ‘Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.’

Collier’s signature audience choir experience, which has entranced crowds from Glastonbury to the BBC Proms, will also feature, inviting attendees to become active participants in the musical tapestry.

What makes these audience choirs so remarkable is Collier’s ability to coax beauty out of collective participation. It doesn’t matter whether someone is a trained vocalist or a self-described bad singer; under his direction, the sheer weight of the crowd’s voices transforms into something cohesive, pure, and transcendent. There’s also an alchemy at work here—Collier is not just creating music; he’s fostering a sense of connection. For those few minutes, the divisions of the crowd—by geography, age, or ability—disappear. They are no longer individuals but one voice, one collective sound. 

This approach has been a staple of Collier’s live shows, from intimate venues to massive festival crowds and hallowed stages like the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Most recently he executed his audience choir at the O2 to a surprise appearance from Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay – a longtime friend and collaborator – where the crowd united to harmonise to ‘Fix You.’

The Grammy award winning musician delighted Glastonbury last month with his soulful, captivating performance that saw the crowd fully immersed in his sound. Now, the London based singer/songwriter has dropped “Wellll,” which he debuted at Glastonbury, that provides for a much more rock vibe-combining elements of pop, punk and even 80s new wave.

Speaking of the song, Collier said, “wellllll, what can I say? The song is a collage of catharsis -a convergence of many musical materials I haven’t explored until now. It features my custom-designed 5-string electric guitar, made by Strandberg, and harkens back to much of the rock music I loved as a child. It’s a song about being a child, being wild and listening to your heart. I can’t wait for you to hear it.”

Collier, who incorporates a wide range of musical influences and styles in his songs, continues to push musical boundaries as “Wellll” sees the singer turning his attention to the more rock influenced side of his persona. It has also allowed Collier to show off his newly designed Strandberg, headless electric guitar-a model that seems to be growing in popularity with many musicians due to its light weight and open sound.

Collier himself has seen his star fast on the rise over the past twelve months as the singer has become noted for his energetic performances that often see him conducting sections of the crowd to provide different melody parts on songs. Collier has also used social media platforms to great effect, gathering millions of views and featuring cover songs on YouTube and crowd participation videos from his shows .

Collier released his debut album, In My Room in 2016-the release produced and recorded by himself in the back room of his family home in Finchley, London. The album was a ringing success with two of the songs, “Flintstones” and the Stevie Wonder cover of “You And I,” winning Grammy awards.

Collier has also recently featured as a co-writer on Stormzy’s 2022 hit album This Is What I Mean and also has performed with and produced music for Coldplay’s album Music Of The Spheres. He has also recently teamed up with the ever popular shoe brand Crocs to design a music inspired clog that features in the video for “Wellll.”

The winning song is featured in the album ‘Djesse Vol. 3’, released in August 2020, which was written, arranged, recorded and mixed in Jacob’s childhood bedroom. This body of work was nominated for Best Album, with the song ‘All I Need’ featuring Ty Dolla Sign and Mahalia also nominated for Best R&B Performance. Eventually, ‘He Won’t Hold You (Feat. Rapsody)’ gets the music virtuoso his fifth Grammy – his third for the Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals category.

Having grown up in a musical family, Collier started playing around the age of seven. He is now well known in the music industry for being a self-taught, DIY music prodigy, playing and looping all the instruments by himself as well as building songs layer after layer. In 2014, the artist was discovered and signed by Quincy Jones, after his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing’ went viral on YouTube.

In the same year, the musical mastermind started collaborating with Ben Bloomberg, a Ph.D. student in the Media Lab in the Opera of the Future group, to develop a software for live performances, allowing Collier to transform regular concerts into one-man shows. From there on, his talents brought him to collaborate with artists of the calibre of arranger and composer Hans Zimmer, international star Pharrell Williams and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and was defined as a modern Mozart with Prince’s songwriting style.

The statement reads, “After thoughtful conversations with health experts, our host and artists scheduled to appear, we are rescheduling the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards^® to be broadcast Sunday, March 14, 2021.” They continue to explain that the Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected LA, where the ceremony is held, as new guidance from the government has recently been shared to support safety. All of this led the organisers to the conclusion that postponing the show “was the right thing to do.”

The letter concluded by thanking the artists and crew for their patience. The nominees were announced in November via live-stream, including Dua Lipa with a total of 6 nominations, Coldplay, Jacob Collier, Harry Styles with his first Grammy nomination, and more.

The ceremony will be presented by comedian and presenter Trevor Noah, who commented, “Despite the fact that I am extremely disappointed that the Grammys have refused to have me sing or be nominated for best pop album, I am thrilled to be hosting this auspicious event.” Despite the pandemic currently preventing large gatherings, the awards will be live-streamed on the official website at 8pm GMT on 14th March, with performances from some amazing acts who are  yet to be announced.

Of the most popular songs this year, a significant number are collaborations, which has brought new sounds to the limelight. Some have been from breakthrough acts, and all are reflections of the various events of 2020. Here are our top ten songs of 2020.

10. Contagion – Napalm Death
Arguably the highest peak in Napalm Death’s sixteenth record Thores of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism (Century Media, 2020), ‘Contagion’ is the ruthless manifestation of Napalm Death’s forty-year long crusade against ignorance and social injustice. In a milestone album with influences ranging from signature grindcore to old-school industrial, the track is a straightforward brutal tirade against greed and corruption.

With music and lyrics by bassist Shane Embury and produced by Russ Russell (At The Gates, Dimmu Burgir, Exploited), ‘Contagion’ captures the rage and defiance of the whole record. The song is a fast and precise blend of grind and death metal, with doom feel and hardcore attitude. It is moody and angry, but above all, it is pure Napalm Death and one to remember 2020 with.

9. Strange Girl – Laura Marling
Strange Girl was written by Laura Marling and comes from her seventh studio album ‘Song for Our Daughter’ which was released in April of 2020. ‘Song for Our Daughter’ was co-produced by Laura Marling and long-time collaborator Ethan Johns. The album is a collection of messages Laura wants to convey to her future daughter.

The song addresses this fictional daughter as someone quite like Marling and has given up financial stability to pursue her art. The song is the perfect dance around the kitchen song, it follows the classic folk song style of and undeniable beat with a beautiful message, told through passionate lyrics. ‘Song For Our Daughter’ was shortlisted for the 2020 Mercury Awards and was also nominated for Best Folk Album in the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

8. Heat Waves – Glass Animals
Written by Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley and produced by Paul Epworth (Adele, Rihanna, Florence and the Machine), has been pivotal in the band’s career – and this year for fans, gaining over 64 million streams. ‘Heat Waves’ is blends genres in the way that Glass Animals so often do; despite featuring hip-hop beats and influences from trap music, there is ultimately an electro-pop sound running throughout.

This was one of many singles to be shared from the band’s latest album ‘Dreamland’, premiering in June, with the album following in August. Lyrically, the song focuses on combatting the judgement of other people and staying true to one’s own path. Bayley wrote on Instagram, “It’s about realising you can’t make everyone happy. And realising it’s ok to be defeated by something,” going on to say, “being vulnerable should be a positive thing.”

7. Head &Heart – Joel Corry ft. MNEK
Head & Heart by Joel Corry, featuring the widely popular MNEK on vocals, was the UK’s favourite dance-track of the summer after its massive release in July. The single had the added benefit of being mixed by the acclaimed Kevin Grainger who has worked on iconic dance records, including with the late Avicii. Head & Heart was the fun and optimistic club-banger that was sorely needed in a time of isolation and therefore rocketed to the top of the charts in its first week.

Corry is a relatively new artist, only breaking onto the London DJ scene in 2019, so his success with this track has been unprecedented as it sat at the number 1 spot on the UK Single Charts for 6 weeks straight. Corry has come a long way from his reality television days on Geordie Shore as Head & Heart has made him one of London’s most successful DJ’s and producers of the year. It would be fitting to say that Head & Heart makes 2020’s heart go ‘boom boom bah doom!’

6. Ain’t It Different – Headie One ft. Stormzy and AJ Tracey
‘Ain’t It Different’ was written by 13 writers (including AJ Tracey) and produced by Fred (Ed Sheehan, Rita Ora, Major Lazer, Ellie Goulding) and Toddla T (Major Lazer, Sean Paul). The song sees the three rappers trade straight-talking bars about how different their lives are now.

It’s an important message depicting how different their lives have changed since their younger days, which uses samples from M-Dubs’ Bump and Grind and Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Pretty Little Dirty. Sitting at over 60 million streams and peaking at number 2 in the UK charts, these rap and R’n’B legends have hit out with a powerful and immersive song.

5. Obey – Bring Me The Horizon and Yungblud
‘Obey’ is a collaboration between two pop-punk giants; Yungblud and Bring Me The Horizon. Full of battering guitars, hard-hitting drum beats and electric vocals, the song pulls from multiple genres nu metal, electronic dance music and rave music.

Throughout, the song carries a riotous energy, focusing on the oppression and suffering many face due to government control; “Obey, We’re gonna show you how to behave, Obey It’s nicer when you can’t see the chains.”  The track has received universal acclaim from fans and critics alike, being voted Annie Mac’s Hottest Record of the Year for 2020.

4. Rain – Aitch, AJ Tracey and Tay Keith
Two of the biggest names in UK rap, Aitch and AJ Tracey, released their track ‘Rain’ this year on the 5^th of May 2020. The track was produced by Tay Keith, who also featured on the hit single which was premiered on BBC Radio 1 and 1XTRA as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record In The World and DJ Target’s ‘Targo Embargo’.

The LA Filmed video was produced by Arrad. NME says it “sees Aitch and AJ making it rain – both literally and metaphorically – as they hold onto stacks of dollar bills and rock various pieces of iced- out jewellery.” The 3 rap artists roll out their lyrics effortlessly over a heavy piano beat produced by Tay Keith. The highly anticipated track was a brilliant collaboration and it’s therefore no surprise it was a huge hit this year.

3. All I Need – Jacob Collier ft. Mahalia and Ty Dolla $ign
Penned by our very own Jacob Collier, the ‘Clarity’ artist offers a soulful, R&B infused standout single. A creative collision between Jacobs, American rapper Ty Dolla $ign and singer- songwriter Mahalia (formally known as Mahalia Burkmar), All I Need draws upon the three artists’ eclectic and equally strong vocal prowesses.

‘All I Need’ is taken from Collier’s fourth studio album, ‘Djesse Vol. 3′. Released back in August, ‘All I Need’ is a genre-blending, foot-tapping bop, filled to the brim with sounds of both neo-soul and synth pop. Lyrically, the track hones in on the all too relatable feeling of infatuation. Collier sings: “I love the way that I feel when you put your arms over me/(There must be something I could say to make you stay baby)”. He said of the track’s meaning: “In the gorgeous, naive space that exists when one falls in love with somebody, it can really feel like they are exactly everything you need in that moment.”

2. Don’t Start Now – Dua Lipa
Released as a single ahead of her successful ‘Future Nostalgia,’ album late last year, Dua Lipa’s ‘Don’t Start Now,’ made a splash which has led to it to becoming one of the biggest hits of 2020. The tune charted at number 2 on the official charts, only narrowly behind her two biggest hits, the UK number ones ‘New Rules,’ and ‘One Kiss,’ and it remained on the charts for a whopping 52 weeks.

Like the rest of ‘Future Nostalgia,’ don’t start now has a retro 80s disco vibe with a great bassline and neat guitar work, the lyrics are in some ways typical of Dua Lipa’s songwriting, dealing with everyday themes like relationships and heartbreak with simple, yet effective delivery. As we head into 2021 ‘Don’t Start Now,’ is still one of the hottest tracks in a hear of British music which has undoubtably been owned by Dua Lipa.

1. Black Dog – Arlo Parks
2020 was a breakthrough year for Arlo Parks, and in ‘Black Dog’ the Londoner produced a timely and powerful reflection on mental health which captured the frustrated, longing mood of a nation in lockdown. Parks’ lyrics fuse the mundanity of everyday life stuck indoors (“Let’s go to the corner store and buy some fruit/ I would do anything to get you out your room”) with a dark sensuality, particularly that superb opening line, “I’d like the grief right off your lips/ You do your eyes like Robert Smith”.

It’s a curious and winning combination which has gained over 10 million streams. Sonically, ‘Black Dog’ is sweetly melodic and quietly intense: an indie ballad which blends in folk and R&B influences to stirring effect.

2021 looks set to be another big year for Parks – her debut LP ‘Collapsed In Sunbeams’ is due for release next month – and you wouldn’t bet against this prodigious young talent scaling new heights in the very near future.

Dua Lipa received nominations in a number of categories including Album of the Year for her latest work ‘Future Nostalgia’, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for ‘Don’t Start Now’. In total the artist has 6 nominations, one of which is for her collaboration with J Balvin, Bad Bunny and Tainy on ‘Un Dia’.

Also entered for Album of the Year are Coldplay with ‘Everyday Life’; the band has so far won seven Grammys over the course of their career. Jacob Collier received his first Album of the Year nomination for ‘Djesse Vol.3′, as well as in two other categories. He shared his excitement with followers, posting, “Three Grammy nominations, including ALBUM OF THE YEAR???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

After releasing ‘Fine Line’ in December 2019, Harry Styles is a contender for Best Pop Solo Performance for ‘Watermelon Sugar’, while the album is up for Best Pop Vocal Album and ‘Adore You’ for Best Music Video. These are the singer’s first Grammy nominations, and he is now the first member of One Direction to receive this type of recognition.

Other nominees include Disclosure, Slowthai, Snarky Puppy, Fontaines D.C., and Michael Kiwanuka, as well as Mahalia who featured on Jacob Collier’s track ‘All I Need’. Of course, Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’, Beyoncé’s ‘Black Parade’, and Billie Eilish’s ‘Everything I Wanted’ were all announced in various categories, as Beyoncé gained nine nominations. In total, the livestream lasted over two hours, and thousands tuned in to watch the young singer-songwriter play his original songs on the piano and chat to fans. Martin live-streamed from his home studio, performing two of his songs ‘Sparks’ and ‘Daddy’, as well as a cover of ‘Moon River’. Collier said of the experience “That was fun and pretty crazy,” later posting on Instagram that Martin was “stratospheric”.

Chris Martin was the first artist to hold a livestream for ‘Together At Home'; he has now put on two and taken part in the ‘One World: Together At Home’ broadcast, along with many others. The concert raised a total of $127 million for coronavirus relief.

Continuing the concert solo, Collier asked fans to comment requests which he would play on the spot. He even covered Coldplay songs ‘Fix You’ and ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’, putting his own jazz spin on them. Jacob Collier’s career began on YouTube and blew up in 2012 when he uploaded a cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing’. He has now released two full length albums, ‘In My Room’, recorded in his bedroom at home, and ‘Djesse’, made up of four volumes – the first two volumes are already available and have won a Grammy each. Collier is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter.

The artist has been a part of many organisations to support Covid-19 relief or simply to help people to feel connected while in isolation. Apart from running live streams for fans and ‘Together at Home’, he recently recorded a COLORS session from his London home as well a Stream Aid performance of ‘Hallelujah’.

Coldplay’s latest album was released in November 2019 as a double album. ‘Everyday Life’ is their eighth studio album, and the eighth to debut at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart. Due to the environmental impact of touring, Martin announced prior to the album release that they would not be going on tour until they can find a way to make sure it’s not only sustainable, but beneficial. Founded in 1996, they hold a total of 9 Brit Awards and 7 Grammys and have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling artists. They are well-known for supporting social and political issues such as the climate crisis.
