American rapper Jack Harlow has scored his first UK number one with his new single, “Lovin On Me.” Harlow’s latest track pushed the new Beatles song “Now and Then” out of the top spot of the UK Singles Chart.

Harlow’s first UK number one follows three previous UK top ten hits, including “First Class,” “3D” with K-Pop phenomenon Jung Kook of BTS and “Industry Baby” with fellow American rapper Lil Nas X.

Harlow took to social media to promote his new track, writing “Thank u for allowing me to reset this year. I moved back to Kentucky and gave u an album I could not have made on the road. Surrounded by family & childhood friends this has been one of the happiest years of my life. But now…a new era begins.“

“Lovin On Me” has already taken TikTok by storm and has reeled in overwhelmingly positive reviews. Vulture writer Hershal Pandya wrote, “A surprisingly nimble flow and impeccable beat selection? Check and check. “Cut your boy a little slack,” he raps right before “Lovin on Me”‘s final chorus. If he keeps making singles like this, we won’t have to.”

The track samples the 1995 R&B song “Whatever (Bass Soliloquy)” by Cadillac Dale, which was the B-side to his single “Soulful Moaning.” “Lovin On Me” builds itself around the opening lyrical hook of Dale’s track, singing “I don’t like no whips and chains and you can’t tie me down / But you can whip your lovin’ on me” creating a tongue-in-cheek earworm.

“Lovin On Me” gives Harlow’s fans an insight into what they can expect from his upcoming fourth studio album. This new track has quickly followed his highly acclaimed album Jackman, released in April 2023. Jackman came in at number one on the Top Rap Albums Chart and garnered him a nomination for BET’s Hip Hop Album of the Year.

Harlow currently has no plans to tour the UK, announcing that his only 2023 tour will take place in his home state of Kentucky, aptly titled the No Place Like Home tour.

Come Home The Kids Miss You debuted at number four on the Official Albums Chart earlier this year. The record became Jack’s first-ever UK Top 10 album. The success of the lead single “First Class”, Jack’s first Top 10 record as a solo artist, sampled Fergie’s 2000s smash hit “Glamorous” and reached Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart, helped to propel the album up the charts. The album also featured two more UK Top 40 songs, “Churchill Downs”, a collaboration with Drake and “Dua Lipa”, and a tribute to the British pop icon, the tracks reaching number 19 and 33, respectively. This isn’t Harlow’s first brush with the Top 10; in 2021, his collaboration with Lil Nas X, “Industry Baby”, reached Number 3 on the UK Singles Charts.

Harlow and Nas, along with Kendrick Lamar, lead the way with seven nominations at this year’s MTV VMA Awards, leading the Louisville native to pull out of this weekend’s Reading & Leeds Festival due to his desire to perform at the ceremony. The awards take place at New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Sunday, August 28th, the same day Harlow was scheduled to appear at the festival. The festival organisers confirmed the news on August 15th.

Earlier this month, Eurovision stars Måneskin announced that due to “scheduling conflicts” they had to cancel their appearance at the festival. “We love and miss the UK and all of our beloved UK fans and we’re absolutely gutted to no longer be able to play these shows,” they wrote in a post on their social media. The festival organisers then followed up by posting “We are saddened to hear that Jack Harlow and Måneskin have decided to perform at an award show the same weekend they were confirmed to play Reading and Leeds,” on their Instagram story.

This blow came after headliners Rage Against The Machine pulled out due to frontman Zack de la Rocha’s leg injury. A statement on Twitter was released saying: “Per medical guidance, Zack de la Rocha has been advised that the August and September 2022 UK and European leg of the Rage Against The Machine tour cannot proceed. It is with great disappoint that we announce this cancellation.” Soon after, The 1975 were announced as their replacement. This will mark their second appearance as headliners after their 2019 set.

Its not easy to find a headline festival act in short period of time but the replacement you have are not on the scale of RATM and are not even of the same genre of music. If you are not offering refund for sunday ticket holders that is absolutely unacceptable.

— Ryan Arthurton (@RyanArt9119) August 12, 2022

The changes to the line up have garnered mixed responses from ticket holders with one Twitter user describing The 1975 as a “downgrade” and another saying that The 1975 were “not even of the same genre of music”. The festivals’ refund policy states money can only be returned for a “material alteration which, in Festival Republic’s opinion, makes the event materially different to the event that ticket purchasers expected”, but it also mentions that “changes to the line-up” or “changes to a band” does not make consumers entitled to a refund.

The announcement of the latest additions, Charlie XCX and AJ Tracey has also got some festival-goers feeling let down with on saying Reading and Leeds has “lost its identity” and another asking why there wasn’t a rockbound replacing Måneskin. A lot of the disappointment seems to be from those who had booked tickets to see bands more associated with the rock and indie genre; something which Reading and Leeds has been synonymous with since its inception.

After a particularly tough last couple of weeks for Reading and Leeds Festival, with previous Sunday Headliner Rage Against The Machine Pulling out at the last minute on medical advice, their situation is showing not many signs of improving. Last week, Italian Eurovision stars Måneskin and Louisville rapper Jack Harlow pulled out of their slots at the festival due to “scheduling conflicts”. It has now been revealed that the artists will be appearing at this year’s MTV VMAs, and since the announcement has gone public, R+L bosses have taken to their socials to burn a few bridges seemingly.

On August 9th, Måneskin released a statement explaining, “We are sad to announce that unfortunately due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, we are no longer able to perform at Readings & Leeds festival this year. We love and miss the UK and all of our beloved UK fans and we’re absolutely gutted to no longer be able to play these shows.” Before concluding, “We’re really excited for the year to come and want to thank you for your support and patience, we’ll hopefully be back in the UK soon and we can’t wait to see you.” It seems like they were almost hoping we’d forgotten about this, to be honest.
