The leg of the tour will be locked between the ‘No One Knows’ band’s gigs in North America across October and November. The name of The Catacombs tour was first inspired by the band’s experience of playing in the famous Parisian underground burial network, a performance that was later released on film. The concert was the first of a kind and showed brand new arrangements of the band’s work, including the addition of a string section and alternatives on the drums.

The rockers said in a press release: “The Catacombs Tour will see arrangements of Queens Of The Stone Age’s work, including the addition of a string section and creative alternatives to a drum kit.ee QOTSA draw upon the spirit of those sublime subterranean renditions and infuse it into reimagined versions that promise to twist the volume knob in both directions. Enhanced by assembled ensembles, the end result will be a precious few unique and intimate performances unlike any previous QOTSA tour.”

Fans should expect to hear classic tracks as frontman Josh Homme previously hit out at artists who do not perform their popular hits live. The lead singer told the Tuna on Toast With Stryker podcast in 2023: “I understand that I’m always going to play No One Knows because I still like playing that song and that’s something that it’s an agreement with the audience. I assume that this is a part of coming here to see us, and here you go. When there’s bands that don’t want to play their big song or their big songs, I always think it’s a little c**** to do that. Acting like a song that a lot of people like is a burden is just a strange reaction to the gift that your fans have given you. Seems like an odd reaction.”

While Stewart made it clear this wasn’t the end of his live performances, the shift marks a significant change in the scale and style of his touring. He plans to focus on performing songs from The Great American Songbook series, and Swing Fever, an album he recorded with Jools Holland, in smaller venues starting in 2026.

“Smaller venues and more intimacy,” he explained. However, Stewart left fans guessing, adding with characteristic cheek, “But then again, I may not [stop touring]…”

Although he hasn’t explicitly detailed his reasons, Stewart hinted at age playing a role in his decision. In a recent interview with The Sun, he admitted, “I am more aware of my health now than before. You should be when you’re getting on.”

In the summer, the singer cancelled three dates at his Las Vegas residency after contracting COVID-19, with one show cancelled only a few hours before he was set to take to the stage.

Stewart has spent decades on the road, beginning his touring career in the late 1960s as a member of the Jeff Beck Group. His first major solo tour came in 1977, where he performed 51 dates across North America, 10 in Australia and New Zealand, and 6 in the UK.

Fans have been overwhelmingly positive about the announcement, celebrating Stewart’s commitment to performing despite stepping back from arenas.

Stewart’s decision aligns with a trend among veteran musicians seeking more personal and stripped-back performances. Jonathan Richman famously transitioned to intimate acoustic shows to protect his hearing, and others, such as Sting and Noel Gallagher, have performed at smaller venues like Halifax’s Piece Hall, a historic location not traditionally associated with headline-worthy acts.

For now, Stewart has a busy schedule through 2025, with two American tours and a European tour culminating in his last large-scale show on August 15 at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in St Louis. Beyond that, fans will still be hoping for setlists filled with iconic hits like ‘Maggie May’, ‘Young Turks’, and ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’, even if they are more streamlined.

Rod Stewart’s move away from arena tours marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter for him. His pivot to smaller venues promises a more intimate way to experience his timeless hits, and at 79, Rod the Mod is proving he’s still as energetic and unpredictable as ever.

Sam Fender has announced a run of intimate shows to celebrate the release of his upcoming new album, Seventeen Going Under. The singer/songwriter hailing from North Shields is set to release his second album next week (October 8) and he has already previewed the release with five new tracks “Howdon Aldi Death Queue”, “Aye”, “Get You Down”, “Spit Of You”, as well as the album’s title track and with its acoustic version.

Fender spoke to NME earlier this year, and said of Seventeen Going Under “As a record I think this one is leagues ahead [of debut album ‘Hypersonic Missiles’]. I’m more proud of this than anything I’ve ever done. It’s probably the best thing I’ve done in my life. I just hope people love it as much as I do. With the first album, a lot of those songs were written when I was 19, so I was over half of it [by the time it was released]. Whereas this one is where I’m at now.” He then added, “At the same time, this record is probably going to piss a lot of people off.”

Fender took to social media recently (September 30) to tell fans that he will be heading out on the road for a run of intimate gigs in December. The gigs will begin at Pryzm in Kingston on December 1 and finish at Fat Sams in Dundee on December 16.

On his Twitter he wrote “Playing some very intimate UK shows to celebrate the release of my new album ‘Seventeen Going Under’! We’re partnering with indie record stores and ticket bundles are on sale tomorrow 10am BST, be quick.”

The ban on live music throughout the pandemic left fans of Fender frustrated as he was forced to postpone and cancel numerous tours, owing to the ongoing struggle with coronavirus and the social distancing measures it carried. Now this tour announcement means Fender enthusiasts can get closer to the singer than they ever have before.

Next month, Fender will also head out on the road to finish his arena tour, with dates in Newcastle, Leeds, Cardiff, and two dates at London’s Alexandra Palace on November 20 and 21.

You can find out more information on his intimate tour and buy your tickets here as well as see the full list of dates below.

Enter Shikari have announced a new documentary mini-series to accompany the release of frontman Rou Reynolds’ recent book ‘A Treatise On Possibility’.

The first of four mini-documentaries ‘A Film On Possibility’, will explore the themes of the book and how they relate to tracks from the album. This will then be followed by three subsequent episodes that will each air at 6 pm over the next three days on the band’s YouTube channel. They are described as ‘One part album-making-of, one part anthropological study’.

The films will feature special guests namely the writer and activist George Monbiot, academic Dacher Keltner and philosopher Toby Ord and of course the band themselves. In the episodes, they will discuss issues such as climate catastrophe, the dangers of social media, and existential peril.

When asked about the series Reynolds stated that “There’s a 1 in 6 chance that humanity makes it through this century, In a world of TikToks, Tweets, and vox pops, we lose depth, detail, and broader perspectives. We get lost in the 24 hour news cycle, advertising, and online debate. This is us delving headfirst into a whole range of dizzying, yet critical, topics. Knowledge is power.”

The band announced the accompanying book published this month back in April along with their surprise lockdown compilation ‘Moratorium (Broadcasts From The Interruption)’.

Reynolds told NME “It’s really an analysis of the world that it was written in, It goes into social psychology, anthropology, philosophy and more. It’s exploring human possibility, where we’re going, what our potential is and the trajectories we’re on.”

In addition to the documentaries, Enter Shikari have also lined up two intimate shows in Glasgow this November, in collaboration with music industry climate awareness group Music Declares Emergency.

The shows purposely coincide with the COP26 Climate Summit that will take place in the city this November. The group will play at the Glasgow QMU on November 3 and 4, with tickets on sale here this Friday (July 30) at 10 am.
