‘I like it when you sleep...’ has upheld itself as a 80’s-style pop  masterpiece, combining upbeat and head-bopping rhythms with profound lyricism. After the success of their self-titled album, nobody expected them to be able to produce something  as high-ranking – but this wasn’t the case for The 1975. They went on to top the charts with their critically acclaimed works ‘A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships’ and ‘Notes On A Conditional Form‘, both of which are regarded as their most globally successful compilations. Despite their later albums producing several iconic hits, ‘I like it when you sleep…‘ is still recognised as one of their finest works.

The album truly solidified the group’s foundation in the modern indie soundscape and moulded many other since-successful artists in their journeys to fame. Through 17 tracks, the album’s optimistic and upbeat sound duels with themes of self-reflection and self-indulgence. Matt Healy’s lyrics are honest and provocative, he alludes to addiction, fame, modern love and modern heartbreak all whilst listeners bop along to a catchy hook in the song.

Though a nod to them, the album seems to subtly mock what we know to be some of the greatest love songs and power ballads of the 80s.  There’s a challenging for honesty and truth in The 1975’s lyrics. They answer to this with popular tracks ‘The Sound’, ‘UGH!’ and ‘Love Me’ which portray conversations had about identity in fame meaning and the pressure of enduring it despite how appealing it may seem. The album spawned 7 singles total including the former, and rapidly became a commercial success. Topping the UK charts, ‘I like it when you sleep…‘ received a 2017 Grammy Award nomination and ranked #1 in Top 10 Albums of 2016 in DIY and NME, as well as sitting comfortably in a Top #10 spot in over fifteen other worldwide renowned music publications.

Flowerovlove’s personality shines through the quirks of the video with theatrical lip-syncing and relatable storytelling. The song addresses the ailments of being friend-zoned in a catchy, pop single that fans and new listeners can’t get enough of, with Spotify streams racking up to over 350,000 five days after its release.

Fans were particularly enamoured when the artist’s mum posted to TikTok, promoting the bubbly track.

‘New Friends’ debuted during Flowerovlove’s biggest show supporting Halsey in the U.S. and made its way to the well-anticipated opening show for Olivia Rodrigo at BST in Hyde Park.

With The Standard, she shared her inspiration for the summery pop single saying, “My music is very conversational, it’s somewhat nostalgic, and it’s super fun.” she added, “I Iove dumb songs. I love when the lyrics are very unhinged.”

The release of ‘New Friends’ comes after her valentines hit ‘I’ve Seen Ur Ex’ which now has almost 4m listens on Spotify. The artist’s rise to fame has been exponential, with her debut EP ‘Think Flower’ released in 2021 at 16-years-old and two EPs to follow. Since then she has had some huge career moments, most notably her appearance in the soundtrack of the British coming-of-age teen romance series Heartstopper. The show featured her dreamy and tender expression of romantic youth, ‘Love You’, in its third season last year. Flowerovlove thanked fans for making it happen, after her queer love song ‘A Girl Like Me’ gained popularity on TikTok as users featured the track in edits of the show.

In her cryptic Instagram post, dodie has announced a new song and accompanying video to be released, though the title is unknown. Excitement for the new release has built since the artist has not released new music since her jazzy Chet Baker tribute single ‘Old Devil Moon’ in 2024. Fans have been anticipating a new release for a while, discussing her activity on social media. One fan predicts a small collection of songs to be released following her last EP ‘Hot Mess’ in 2024. They also consider what genre the artist will focus on in this album such as jazz or “indie pop opera” following the acoustic indie-pop tracks on ‘Hot Mess’ as well as her involvement in the band FIZZ.

Dodie’s last studio album ‘Build A Problem’ was released four years ago in 2024 and achieved great success, debuting at number one for three weeks on the UK Official Albums Chart. Following this, dodie hinted at big things to come, whilst also discussing her difficulties in creating with Ramona magazine. She said, “I have a very big thing I cannot talk about yet and that will be the focus of this year. In terms of my own music, I’m supposed to be writing another album. I would really like to, but the pressures of it are making me dry. I have nothing. I’m trying to give myself space and patience, but it’s just really hard. I’m at that classic writer’s block moment.”

Despite the wait for this release, dodie has been doing some exciting things in music. She recently wowed fans in a surprise live performance with award winning actor and musician Jeff Goldblum. The two performed alongside the Mildred Nitz Orchestra with fans amazed at their musical chemistry.

Young shared her inspiration for ‘Messy’ with Capital FM, revealing the meaning behind the song as a vulnerable collection of moments from different relationships and her struggle with ADHD. She says: “The song is an ADHD anthem because it’s hard living with ADHD and you don’t actually see mess.”

‘One Thing’ continues Young’s unapologetic authenticity, though takes a different subject direction. She describes the track as “liberating and sexy and freeing” in an Instagram post with a sensual music video teaser. Though the song seems a diversion from her vulnerable past tracks, she goes on to explain the difficulties mentioned in the song of “s*x and passion without strings needing to be attached, as its something i struggle achieving most of the time.”

The singer also promises more emotional tracks to come in her upcoming album.

‘One Thing’ shows a confident perspective on sex and relationships in a way that Young had not yet expressed in her discography so far. In an interview with NME she shared “I wanted to make a song and music video that is thought-provoking and highlights sex being both a fun and light thing, not always meaningful, as well as showing how gender roles can be reversed.”

The song debuted at Coachella and fans loved it, declaring it “song of the summer”.

Young has been nominated for the 2025 Ivor Novello Awards and will be performing next at Reading & Leeds Festival in August, Parklife in June and Rock Werchter in July.

In the message, she wrote, “I hate that I have to write this again so soon. Unfortunately, I am really still struggling with this illness and have been advised that I cannot perform these next two nights. I can’t tell you how much this breaks my heart.” She continued, “This tour is something I’ve been dreaming of since the album came out and the shows we’ve played so far have meant more to me than I can tell you.”

 Abrams reassured fans that she and her team would provide updates as soon as they had details about rescheduled dates, writing, “The moment we have any concrete details about these two shows in your cities, we will be in touch.” She ended the note with, “Please know I’d give anything to be able to be with you. Thank you for understanding. I’m sending all my love and my deepest regrets. xxx, Gracie.” 

The news is disappointing for fans, but many have expressed support and concern for Abrams’ health, encouraging her to prioritise recovery on social media. This is not the first time she has had to cancel performances due to health issues. In October 2024, she postponed shows in New York and Philadelphia due to a vocal injury, which required her to take time off to heal. The demands of touring can be physically exhausting, and many artists, including Abrams, have had to step back at times to avoid long-term damage to their health. 

Abrams has been gaining recognition over the past few years for her deeply relatable songwriting and strong, emotional vocals. She first gained traction with her 2020 debut EP ‘Minor’, followed by ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ in 2021. Her debut studio album ‘Good Riddance’ was released in 2023, earning widespread praise for its in-depth lyrics and collaboration with producer Aaron Dessner. Her latest album, ‘The Secret of Us’, has been another major step forward in her career, featuring the hit single ‘That’s So True’ that took the internet by storm. Abrams has also gained a larger audience through her time as an opening act on Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ Tour. 

While the Nottingham and Leeds shows have been postponed, Abrams’ tour is expected to continue once she recovers. If she is well enough, she will resume performances with a show in London, followed by stops in Manchester, Cardiff and Dublin before heading to Glasgow. The tour will then move on to Europe, with concerts scheduled in Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam.

Though the cancellations are disappointing, Abrams’ dedication to her fans suggests she will do everything she can to make it up to them. The new project is led by Bastille frontman, Dan Smith, and is described as a collection of songs that tell a story and intertwine the lives and wide worlds of startling women and men. It tells the story of various characters including poets, artists, scientists and characters from religion. The album is said to be fed by new collaborations, dazzling arrangements and a spirit of musical spirit that is hoping to open minds. Listen to Smith talking about the album below.

The album will be released in four parts leading up to the full release of ‘&’ in October. The first part of the project is out now and includes four tracks that introduce the record. The first track is ‘Intros and Narrators’ which sees Smith play fingerpicked guitar and “sets out the mission and tone” for the album. The next track, ‘Eve and Paradise Lost’, explores themes of blame and shame that women are made to feel “from the dawn of time.” ‘Seasons & Narcissus is described as “a curious, twisted love song between someone and their own reflection.” And the last track of part one, ‘Emily & Her Penthouse In The Sky’, is about the life of 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson and how her life has been framed.

The album is supposed to uncover the stories of people who have been misunderstood in myth, culture, and society, telling the stories of individuals who have been neglected by mainstream society. There is also a song that is inspired by Smith’s family, exploring the idea of how music is passed on through generations by showing how Smith is connected to his father’s poetry and his mother’s singing.

‘&’ (Ampersand) is described as “a collection of songs about looking out at the world, disappearing into other lives rather than into ourselves, and about the humanity that can crackle and shimmer as a consequence.”#

To bid farewell to their fans, The Magic Gang has scheduled a series of celebratory shows in May, with performances set for Glasgow on May 21, Manchester on May 22, and a final show in London on May 23. Tickets for these shows will go on sale on Friday, January 26, at 9am GMT and are available for purchase here. O2 pre-sale for the London date at Electric Ballroom (this has now been relocated to Roundhouse) will also be available on Wednesday, January 24, at 9am GMT via the O2 app.

The announcement came in a heartfelt note from vocalist/guitarist Jack Kaye on Instagram reading, “This band started in 2013 in a bedroom in Kris’ parents house. I remember it was a sweltering hot day and me (Jack), Kris and Paeris were arguing over band names. Kris wanted to start a band with around ten members, playing an array of percussive instruments and acoustic guitars. With this in mind, we settled on The Magic Gang and Paeris wrote it on the front of a kick drum to make it official.

We recorded our first song ‘Bruises’ in our shared house in Brighton. Gus happened to be home at the time and was drafted in to play bass. There was something truly magical about that recording; a lightning-in-a-bottle moment you take for granted when you first start a band.

A decade on (and some time after our most recent gig), it’s clear to see how incredible the journey has been. We’ve travelled the world and have had the opportunity to share our music with anyone who cared to listen (and some who didn’t). We dedicated everything to the band and I’m so glad we did, because we got the world in return.

For now, we’ve decided to call time on The Magic Gang. This band has always been a sum of its parts – four songwriters working in collaboration and doing our best to honour each other’s ideas. The most natural thing now is for everyone in the band to spend some time exploring their own creative pursuits.

You’ll be hearing a lot more from all of us but for now, as The Magic Gang, we’d like to thank everyone who’s supported us over the years by playing a handful of extended shows. We’ll be playing a lot of songs we’ve not performed in years and covering everything from Bruises right up to now.

Having released their self-titled debut album in 2018 and their Northern Soul-influenced second record, ‘Death Of The Party’, in 2020, The Magic Gang experienced considerable success. Earning a formidable number 12 slot on the UK Albums Chart, their debut album made waves, earning the band a nomination for the ‘Best New Artist’ accolade at the esteemed 2018 NME Awards

This talented group is set to embark on their highly anticipated tour, commencing May 2nd 2024 at the Hebden Bridge Trades Club. The tour will then grace the stages of other vibrant cities such as Leeds, Manchester and London’s iconic venue KOKO on May 7th. Camera Obscura will then finish their UK tour in their home city on May 11, playing at the Barrowland Ballroom, in Glasgow. Tickets will go on sale November 17.

Devoted fans can eagerly anticipate the debut of fresh material from the band, who have already produced five remarkable albums, the most recent being Desire Lines in 2013. The current lineup of Camera Obscura features the enchanting vocals of Tracyanne Campbell, the guitar skills of Kenny McKeeve, the bass lines of Gavin Dunbar, and the rhythmic beats of Lee Thomson on drums. Tracyanne Campbell comments,”We’re excited to be working again with Merge Records. We are looking forward to sharing new music with our fans and to playing live in 2024.”

In 2005, the band released the non-album single “I Love My Jean,” which went on to become their highest charting single on the UK Pop charts. The band showcased a 1960s acoustic sounding vibe.

In May 2019, Camera Obscura hinted at the possibility of releasing new music in response to a tweet about their album Desire Lines. Monorail Music said “Perfect timing, with Camera Obscura playing their first Glasgow show in 5 years tonight – their 5th & final album, Desire Lines, is being re-pressed.”

The band confirmed in May 2020 that they were working on a new album but had to postpone recording due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On 23 April 2022, they released a compilation album called Making Money which included rare B-sides, covers, a session recording, and two remixes. This album was dedicated to the memory of former band member Carey Lande.

The band took to their social media platforms to address their fans and share their delight to be back. They said, “We are very excited” and “We are also very pleased to announce that we’ll be playing some shows next year too. Tickets on sale on Friday”.

Fans can expect an unforgettable experience as Camera Obscura showcases their signature blend of baroque pop, infusing it with their unique musical skills and heartfelt lyrics. With their return to Merge Records and the promise of new material, this tour is undoubtedly a momentous occasion for both the band and their devoted fanbase. Frontman Felix Bushe described the album as “caught in between two worlds” in a press release. Red Sun Titans was mixed and produced by British recording engineer Matt Glasbey, who has worked alongside alt-J, Ed Sheeran, Maisie Peters, and Coldplay, and executive produced by Charlie Andrew, who has worked with Wolf Alice, London Grammar, Bloc Party, and alt-J.

The UK tour was announced via the band’s Instagram on the 21^st April. “We cannot wait to see you and play songs old and new”, the band captioned the post. Starting with Leicester in late September, Gengahr will play nine dates around the country concluding in London in October. Gengahr is also on the bill for several festivals this summer including Truck, Ventnor Fringe, Brighten the Corners, Live at Leeds, The Great Escape, Kendall Calling, and Secret Garden Party. So far two singles have been released from the album. Sunny single “A Ladder” dropped back in February giving fans a first taste of the album’s poppy psychedelic sound. The music video for the track (directed by Billy Howard Price, founding member of three-piece alt-rock band Puppy, and childhood friend of Bushe) sees the band donning lab coats and examining fuzzy pastel-coloured bacteria under microscopes.

The second bliss-filled melodic single from the album, “In The Moment”, was released on the 13th April. The video (also directed by Price) was shot on an iPhone in Mallorca featuring Bushe wearing a suit made for Brad Pitt’s role in the film The Councillor (2013).

“In The Moment” reflects upon the necessity to break away from our daily routine and create meaningful memories,” said the singer in a press release. “As much as sunny days and laughter with friends, “In The Moment” celebrates the late hours without inhibition, where dreams lead and tomorrow lingers“.

The band from Stoke Newington first formed in high school back in 2013 naming themselves after the adorable purple Pokémon Gengar. They quickly caught the press and public’s attention with their comforting and trippy psych-pop sounds and stood out thanks to Bushe’s unique falsetto. Their debut LP, A Dream Outside, was heralded as one of the best UK indie pop albums of 2015 by the likes of The Guardian, DIY Magazine, Far Out Magazine, Clash Magazine, and The Line of Best Fit.
