Talk show host Bill Maher has been facing a wave of backlash following his use of a racial slur while interviewing Nebraskan Senator Ben Sasse.

Maher issued an apology immediately following the shows airing, but invited Ice Cube on his show after his outspoken criticism of the incident. The rapper started off complimenting Maher on his show, but took Maher to task regarding his frequent use of “black jokes.”

“Sometimes you sound like a redneck trucker,” Cube said before asking Maher what made him think it was okay to use the n-word.

Explaining his issue with Maher’s use of the term as well its history rooted in slavery, Cube stated that “It’s a word that has been used against us. It’s like a knife. And you can use it as a weapon or you can use it as a tool… That’s our word now and you can’t have it back.” The full exchange, also featuring former congressman Dave Jolly, can be viewed below:

Many were quick to praise Cube, real name O’Shea Jackson Sr., for his well-educated position as well as his non-confrontational tone when discussing with Maher; NPR stated that Cube had returned to form as a “vocal objector to America’s underlying bigotry” with a performance reminiscent of his early sociopolitical commentary with rap collective N.W.A.

In other news, Ice Cube has reissued his sophomore album Death Certificate this week; the release of his 1991 album is his first with Interscope Records and coincides with his receipt of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The new release comes with three new tracks, ‘Dominate The Weak,’ the previously released ‘Good Cop Bad Cop,’ and the lead track ‘Only One Me.’ The album can be ordered here.

Deadline has also reported that Ice Cube is producing a new biopic about baseball player Dock Ellis; in a statement given to the entertainment website, Cube’s production company ‘Cube Vision’ stated that:

“The story of Dock Ellis is coming to the big screen with O’Shea Jackson, Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) attached to star in the title role of Dock. David Permut, Jeff Kwatinetz and Ice Cube are producing from a script by Joey Poach. They are out to directors now.” The project will mark Cube’s sixteenth project with ‘Cube Vision’, the most recent being 2016’s family comedy ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’.
