David Bowie’s 1977 anthem “Heroes” has enjoyed a dramatic spike in global streams after soundtracking the closing moments of the Stranger Things series finale, with listening figures surging by nearly five times the track’s usual daily average in the days following the episode’s release. The show concluded with the single over its closing credits, framing it as a definitive final goodbye to the long-running series. Billboard reported a “500% increase” in the songs’ streams.

The song’s renewed momentum extends Bowie’s cultural reach to a new generation, much like with Kate Bush’s 1985 single “Running Up That Hill” from Season 4 that skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Hot 100 after decades being dormant. Similarly, Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” hit the top 10 after Season 4’s air-guitar scene with beloved misfit character Eddie Munson. Now, “Heroes” joins the elite club, proving Generation Z’s unwavering ability to revive 80s classics, spurred on by the interconnectedness and trendism of social media.

Stranger Things Creators Matt and Ross Duffer credited actor Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington in the show, with the choice to use Bowie’s original version of “Heroes” as the last song, after earlier seasons had leaned on Peter Gabriel’s cover. Keery, known musically as Djo has a successful music career himself with his hit single “End of beginning” finding itself repeatedly in the charts, proving himself musically knowledgeable. Ross Duffer has described the track as an “anthem for Stranger Things”, noting that the decision to let the song run uninterrupted over bespoke animated credits was designed to give the series one last poignant moment of closure.

Heroes” has long stood as one of Bowie’s most impactful songs, from its Cold War‑era Berlin Wall associations to its status as a staple of his live sets and retrospectives. Brian Eno’s ambient production layered Bowie’s ad-libbed vocals over Tony Visconti’s wall-of-sound guitars, creating a defiant love song that later soundtracked Wall fall footage and features in films like Moulin Rouge. Its raw emotion, “We can be heroes, just for one day”, mirrors the kids’ Upside Down triumphs, cementing Bowie’s timeless grip on rebellion. In a statement, Bowie’s estate and label Parlophone highlighted the track as “powerful and evocative”, encouraging fans to revisit the newly remastered HD video as streams continue to climb post‑finale.

Millions of younger viewers are encountering Bowie for the first time through Stranger Things, folding him into the same pop‑culture universe that has recently re‑elevated artists like Bush and Prince. With “Heroes” now trending across playlists and socials, the Stranger Things sync is poised to become a key chapter in the song’s long afterlife, reaffirming Bowie’s status as one of pop’s most transcendent innovators in history.

Having become a bit of a trend in the last year or so, David Bowie (or more appropriately David Bowie’s estate) is the latest artist to hand over the publishing rights to his music in exchange for a lump sum from the distributing record label. According to an anonymous source that spoke to Variety; after months of negotiations Warner Chappell Music (WMC), a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group, have purchased a catalogue spanning over 6 decades that features such timeless classics as “Life on Mars”, “Heroes”, “Space Oddity”, “Changes”, and many… many others for around $250 Million.

The acquisition now covers all 26 of Bowie’s studio albums, including the posthumous album Toy (released only a few months ago), 2 Tin Machine albums, and whatever portion of royalties was agreed to go to Bowie on any collaborations; such as his 1981 outing with Queen; “Under Pressure”. Back in September, it was revealed that WMC had filed a deal to acquire the rights for all his music from 2000-2016. But now the deal has progressed to include everything from 1968-2000 as well. All in all, the deal covers hundreds of songs both labelled as David Bowie songs or any side projects he undertook from 1968 up to his death in 2016. This leaves a small cache of recordings that WMC don’t actually own the rights to, Bowie’s self-titled debut for example.

Chief executive of WMC, Guy Moot, had this to say about the deal, “These are not only extraordinary songs but milestones that have changed the course of modern music forever” adding, “We are looking forward to tending his unparalleled body of songs with passion and care as we strive to build on the legacy of this most extraordinary human being.”

While Bowie is the most recent to have his publishing rights handed away, it may not all be as bad as it immediately seems for the older artists that seem to have hopped on the idea. Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and various members of Fleetwood Mac have all handed over their rights for lump sums in the hundreds of millions. This may be down to the dwindling ability to tour, they’re hardly making the millions they did back in the day through streaming, so $300 Million to an 80-year-old Bob Dylan… I understand the appeal.

Maybe the acquisition of these timeless classics to cash-grabbing billion-dollar corporations might end up with your favourite old classic being used in ways that may not necessarily agree with an artist you love. But the good news is, your favourite artist clearly doesn’t care.

The music video brings together a collection of footage from the original shoot, as edited by Nachos Video, being officially approved by David Bowie’s Facebook page.

The description for the music video reads as follows, “This video is a newly-edited, previously unreleased take from the Stanley Dorfman / Nicholas Ferguson-directed official ‘Heroes’ promo video outtakes reel. It is synced to the 2017 remastered version of ‘Heroes’, edited back into the 1977 7” single format.”

Nacho continued, “In considering the many possible ways of making my own re-cut version of the ‘Heroes’ promo video, I eventually decided on trying to salvage the wonderful Complete Take 1,”

“Thanks to the vast possibilities of modern digital editing, it was relatively easy to alter some of the cross cuts between the two camera angles, and moreover to correct or somewhat mask Bowie’s lip-sync errors.”

Last month, the first photo of Johnny Flynn in the upcoming biopic Stardust was released. The film was announced earlier in the year, focusing on the story of Bowie heading to America in 1971, which is when it is believed Ziggy Stardust was created. The shot of the actor depicts Flynn smoking a cigar sat in a diner. The film’s production was not received well by the family of Bowie. His son Duncan Jones wrote on Twitter, “Pretty certain nobody has been granted music rights for ANY biopic… I would know,”

He said further, “I’m not saying this movie is not happening. I honestly wouldn’t know. I’m saying that as it stands, this movie won’t have any of dads music in it, & I can’t imagine that changing.”
