Kentucky’s Knocked Loose are currently one of the biggest hardcore punk-adjacent bands in the scene, having burst through to a large audience thanks to mainstream TV coverage and high-profile live shows. While their sound is unflinchingly heavy, they’ve become unlikely fan-favourites at California’s Coachella festival, they’ve performed on late-night talk show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, and their single ‘Suffocate’ featuring singer Poppy was nominated for a Grammy – now they’re at the top of British festival bills and supporting the biggest metal band in the world.

Last weekend’s closing sets at Slam Dunk festival in both Hatfield and Leeds saw Knocked Loose compete with iconic main stage headliners Good Charlotte for fans’ attention, which is enough of a challenge in itself, but currently they have royally thrown themselves into the deep end by opening for Metallica. The legendary thrashers have hand-picked all of the support bands on their historic M72 tour, which has been running since 2023 and has included a list of supporting acts including Limp Bizkit, Evanescence and Architects. Knocked Loose will be opening select shows before France’s biggest metal exports Gojira, while other dates will witness dramatic Swedish group Avatar and reunited US groove metal titans Pantera open the festivities.

The UK and Ireland leg of the tour consists of shows in Dublin, Glasgow, Cardiff and London across June and July, but due to the format of Metallica’s stadium tour, Knocked Loose are left with several days between gigs to fill. They had previously booked solo shows for several stops around their trip of mainland Europe and Ireland on the M72 Tour, but this week they have announced their two bonus UK headline shows for the summer. The first is at Electric Bristol on the 29th of June, the day after their shows with Metallica at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, and the second is at Nottingham’s Rock City on the 30th of June. Their last show of the tour is with Metallica at the London Stadium on the 3rd of July. Knocked Loose’s full run for the UK and Ireland is shaping up like this:

Burn It Down is an annual three-day event in the South West, transforming the harbour of Devon seaside resort Torquay into a hub for alternative music fans. The west of England has suffered the loss of many of its live music venues and typically struggles to draw talent to the region, but through initiatives like Burn It Down more international acts than ever visit the so-called “English Riviera” of Torbay. The shows take place across The Foundry, The Attic, and The Apple and Parrot, three of the most important independent bars in Torquay’s nightlife centre. Previous iterations of the fest have welcomed prolific artists ranging from UK hardcore juggernauts Malevolence to breakthrough metalcore starlets Static Dress.

  The initial lineup was announced in January, featuring the upbeat pop punk of As It Is, the weighty hardcore of TRC, and the rebellious punk of The Meffs. A second wave of bands came at the start of March, revealing the Friday night headliner as US post-hardcore outfit Drug Church, alongside St Albans’ Your Demise, who were trendsetters for British alternative music in the 2000s and 2010s. The organisers also broke the news that the entire set of Friday performances would have no barrier in front of the stage, a key feature in energetic hardcore punk shows that allows fans to be part of the action and stage dive to their heart’s content. Today’s update only brought one band, but that band’s presence has drawn significant attention from beyond the Westcountry. Australia’s Speed have grown to be one of the most talked-about hardcore collectives in the world – their aggressive beatdowns and the unique addition of frontman Jem Siow’s flute trills has forged an identity that sets them apart from the pack. Official debut EP ‘Gang Called Speed’ hit number 5 on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA)’s Australian Album Chart, and debut LP ‘Only One Mode’ earned Speed the ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album in 2024.

After supporting Baltimore icons Turnstile on their 2024 European tour, the group last brought their frenetic live show to the UK in June last year, playing at Outbreak Festival in both Manchester and London, as well as shows in Dublin and Belfast. With their Saturday headline slot at Burn It Down also announced to be a no-barrier set, attendees can expect a ton of unbridled mayhem and a busy night for the venue’s security team.

Burn It Down 2026 takes place across Torquay from Friday the 3rd of September to Sunday the 5th, with day and weekend tickets available from promoter BYP’s store. Speed will also be on tour across the UK this April, with tickets available for select shows. The full list of dates for their tour with Whispers, Bodyweb and additional support looks like this:

Baltimore’s Turnstile have enjoyed a rather quick ascent to popularity in the last few years. Originally a fairly innovative hardcore punk band, the group saw their name break out from the scene with the monumental success from 2021 third album ‘Glow On’. On the release they experimented with shoegaze-esque guitar effects, dreamy pop synthesisers and major-label production quality, while still retaining a punk edge to the compositions.

They pushed this sound further on 2025’s ‘Never Enough’, with the atmospheric elements dialled up to 11. The album generated an unmissable buzz online, with fans declaring a “Turnstile Summer” due to its feel-good sound and popular appeal. The reach was so broad that it saw the band perform on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk-show, while also raking in industry plaudits. ‘Never Enough’ was nominated for five Grammys this year, making Turnstile the first band to be considered for all three genres of rock, metal and alternative music. In the ceremony at the start of February, it won for Best Rock Album, and the LP’s heaviest cut ‘Birds’ won Best Metal Performance. Additionally, they were nominated for International Group of the Year at this weekend’s BRIT Awards, narrowly losing out to fellow US band Geese.

After attending the BRITs in Manchester last Saturday, Turnstile’s debut visit to Australian radio broadcaster Triple J was uploaded this morning. Their “Like A Version” show typically brings bands into their studio to perform one of their own songs as well as a cover of another artist in their style. These live cover versions tend to be the main attraction, having drawn wildly different sounds to originals, such as Billie Eillish’s acoustic take on Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ and Royal Otis’ viral indie reworking of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’.

For Turnstile’s appearance, they elected to rip through a wild playthrough of track ‘Sunshower’ taken from ‘Never Enough’, and an ambient, impassioned cover of The Stone Roses’ ‘I Wanna Be Adored’. Though the “Madchester” indie-rock band only released two albums in their careers, debut full-length ‘The Stone Roses’ has become a timeless classic and a defining example of Manchester’s musical exploits. Turnstile’s reimagining utilises their arsenal of guitar pedals and soaring vocals to create a very modern, clean ballad in place of the original’s brooding, rockier sound.

On the 25th of November 2025, The Stone Roses’ bassist for both albums, Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield passed away aged 63. Well-regarded as both a musician and a personality, his passing was mourned by many around the world, with his funeral becoming an occasion unifying many of Manchester’s musical icons.

In an accompanying interview posted by Triple J, frontman Brendan Yates explains ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ is “one of my favourite songs of all time. It’s unconventional and simple, and just very beautiful.” Guitarist Meg Mills, who joined the US band as their only British member in 2025, then speaks on their reasoning for selecting the song – “with the passing of Mani it felt like a really appropriate time to kind of like, pay homage to him. Definitely, as a Brit, Stone Roses were one of those bands that every kid that had any inkling towards anything alternative just knew from such an early age, just such an iconic band.” The cover was promoted on the band’s official Instagram account with the caption “RIP Mani”.

Turnstile brought their spectacular live show to the UK last year for both Glastonbury Festival and London’s Outbreak Festival, before capping the year off with their ‘Never Enough’ tour of Europe. This August they return with a set at London’s All Points East event on the 28th, as well as a special one-off solo show at The Piece Hall in Halifax on the 26th, with tickets available here. After forming in 2010 in Ocala, Florida, the band released debut album ‘Blueprints’ in 2015, breaking through off the back of singles ‘The River’ and ‘Twenty One’. The LP was an explosive hit of raw, unrelenting metalcore, shedding all nuance in favour of a direct assault. Their trademark sound was one of monstrously heavy verses leading to huge anthemic choruses. In 2016 the attention it garnered brought them on tour to the UK and Europe supporting heavyweights The Amity Affliction, Northlane and Stray From The Path.

On each album since 2017’s ‘Deadweight’ their sound mellowed gradually, with electronic elements seeping in, clean vocals becoming more frequent, and the overall polish of the mix becoming so sterile that most of the character was washed away. Following the launch of their fifth and so far last album ‘Stigma’ in 2024, fans were starting to label the band as “Octane-core” – a demeaning label associating them with the more radio-friendly metal music played on US digital station SiriusXM Octane.

With the release of ‘Song Of The Swamp’, they’ve shaken all the taunts away and unleashed something far darker than anything else in their catalogue. The track is ferocious in all the right ways – harsh vocalist Briton Bond sounds utterly demonic, the bass is earth-shattering, and the pounding drums do not let up. Wage War describe the song as “the tone-setter” for the full EP, saying “’Song Of The Swamp’ is rooted in where we’re from. Driven by Florida and the raw aggression of nature, it’s a heavy track built on tension and hostility.”

If this sets the benchmark for what’s to come, the full 5-song feature is sure to be a serious display of force. The band say “’It Calls Me By Name’ is about being drawn to your roots. This isn’t a concept EP but is meant to live in its own world. Five tracks shaped by Florida, the swamp and the relentless aggression of nature. Built heavy, but still driven by the hooks that have defined us. It’s our signature sound amplified and pushed further into metal than we’ve ever taken it.” The EP releases on the 17th of April, with this track listing:

The band hit the UK last Autumn on Architect’s headline European run, wrapping up their ‘Stigma’ touring cycle. Formed in Sheffield in 2010, Malevolence’s music has been best described as “beatdown hardcore”, a variant of hardcore punk that puts emphasis on sludgy breakdowns and aggressive vocals, as well as using thrash metal riffs and drum beats. Their sound is incredibly potent, switching from high-tempo headbanging sections to pounding grooves in an instant. Naturally this has led to their live atmosphere becoming one of overwhelming intensity, captivating fans around the world.

A big part of their charm is in their image and how they present life in the North of England through their music videos. Malevolence have always avoided clichés from either hardcore punk or heavy metal culture, and to the naked eye they do not exude any typical rock-star swagger. Music videos like that of title track ‘Self Supremacy’ from their 2017 second album has all the façade of a drill rap video, with the band donning trendy sportswear instead of dressing like stereotypical metalheads. Many of their other promos show them doing what they do best – starting moshpits and raising the roof. There is a deep humility to the members, implying that no matter how far their careers have taken them, they’re still just five friends from South Yorkshire.

In the past they have dabbled with lighter songwriting styles, like with ‘Higher Place’ on 2022’s ‘Malicious Intent’ or last year’s ‘Salt The Wound’ taken from ‘Where Only The Truth Is Spoken’. In general, their experiments with their softer side have always still tended towards their usual sound eventually. Not so with ‘Silhouette’, which made its debut today, the band issuing it with the message “FOR VALENTINE’S DAY, ‘SILHOUETTE’ OUT NOW.”

While it is still crushingly heavy and features harsh vocals, chunky riffs and a guitar solo, there is a mature, mournful sound to the ballad which the band has never fully tapped into before. Guitarist and vocalist Konan Hall’s trademark low roar is transformed into a beautifully melancholic singing voice, bellowing lyrics that grapple with raw emotions and a sense of a love lost.

In a post on his personal Instagram account, drummer Charlie Thorpe writes “We sat on this one two albums ago just unsure what to do with it so here you go – another diverse extension of what Malevo is capable of. Gone full soft and mega proud of it.” Further in the piece he jokes about it dissuading fans of their standard style, saying “it’s ok to just enjoy some broken hearted dad metal for a bit.”

While this is unlikely to become a new template for their fierce brand of crossover music, the “broken hearted dad metal” is certainly enjoyable while it lasts. ‘Silhouette’ released this morning through the band’s own record label MLVLTD Music, and is now available on streaming platforms. Next up for Malevolence is a blockbuster North America tour with fellow British hardcore trendsetters Guilt Trip kicking off this March and running through April. Following that they’ll be making appearances on home soil in Hatfield and Leeds for Slam Dunk Festival 2026 this May.

Burn It Down has become a highlight of the alternative music scene in the Westcountry over recent years, with the novel concept of bringing some of the heaviest touring bands to a quaint seaside resort. Held in Torquay, Devon, it draws acts ranging from rock, hardcore punk, metal and acoustic music to a cluster of independent venues around a scenic harbour. The promoters announced the date of the festival and the first set of artists today, coinciding with the first day of the national Independent Venue Week initiative, which will see hundreds of performances held across the UK in support of our local music businesses.

The first Burn It Down (BID) festival ran in 2018 as a one-day affair at the start of September, following years of independent venues shutting down in Devon’s cities of Exeter and Plymouth. Promoters BYP saw an opportunity to bring a different live music experience to the so-called “English Riviera” of Torbay, a pocket of towns on the Devon coast which is extremely popular with tourists. However, Torbay lacked any kind of indoor arena designed specifically for live music, so the festival was held in partnership with local pubs and nightclubs in Torquay.

The first event was a huge success, drawing attendees from across the UK, and shining a light on up-and-coming British talent in the nation’s underground scenes. In particular, Malevolence, who were one of the top bands on the inaugural bill, have since gone on to become one of the most exciting and popular hardcore bands both in the UK and beyond. Burn It Down continued to build up steam over the following years, before expanding into a two day format in 2022. They also managed to attract bands with higher profiles, such as English rockers Deaf Havana in 2022, and California post-hardcore band Being As An Ocean in 2023. 2025’s edition upped the ante again, adding a third day to work with Bob Vylan during the fallout from their controversial Glastonbury set.

The reveal for 2026 has a lot going on. With no formal headline act shown, BID-debutants As It Is, who label themselves as “transatlantic pop-punk” from Brighton are the first and perhaps biggest name on the poster. London hardcore unit TRC last played the festival in 2021, and will be looking to bring a bit of energy to the pits, alongside Burn It Down regulars Pintglass and Overpower. Two-piece Essex outfit The Meffs will also be bringing a dose of punky liveliness to the Southern coastline. Last on the list is Berlin-based Vianova, whose 2025 genre-bending album ‘Hit It!’ confused and intrigued listeners in equal measure.

Burn It Down 2026 is booked in for the 3rd, 4th and 5th of September, being held across The Foundry, The Attic and The Apple And Parrot, three independent bars in Torquay. Tickets are available now from BYP’s website, with many more acts to be announced later in the year.

The hardcore and punk venue was forced to close its doors in March after struggling to survive throughout the Covid pandemic. The landlord decided to terminate the lease and turn the building into flats and shops… a story becoming all too prominent in this country.

However, after a string of benefit gigs and crowdfunding campaigns, Boom is now ready to reopen its doors at a beautiful canalside location on Armley Road.

Next door to the 1,000 capacity Project House, the new venue will become a hub of music and culture which, when complete, will boast a live music space, rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, extra event rooms, and education and community facilities.

The first show will take place on May 21 as Leeds hardcore band Bodyweb headline with support from Long Goodbye, imissyoualready, Crowquil and Monroe.

The news of a venue re-opening after being forced to shut comes as a glimmer of hope to grassroots venues up and down the country.

Mxdwn has extensively covered the growing problems that independent venues are facing in this country, with a new survey finding that over half of the British population have witnessed the closure of a locally important venue since 2020.

Work is being done to tackle this by many groups including the Music Venue Trust and Jeremy Corbyn’s Peace And Justice Project, with the latter recently announcing the new campaign ‘A Summer To Save Live Music’.

Now, fans of punk in Leeds can rejoice at the reopening of the legendary venue. Posting on Instagram, the Boom team said: “Thanks to six months of fundraising, merch projects and countless volunteer hours, we’ve already started to transform the space and can’t wait to welcome you all back later this month.

“There’s still plenty to do, and it’s definitely a work in progress, opening for gigs is our next big step in raising the funds we need.”

After the opening night on May 21, the venue will then be headlined the next day by Inhuman Nature with support from Grief Ritual, Sidewinder and Hard Stare.

One band that cut their teeth at Boom was Static Dress. Speaking in January 2024, frontman Oli Appleyard spoke of the importance of the venue, telling NME: “It’s a home of so much culture and not just one specific genre – punk, metal, hardcore, grindcore – all the stuff which wouldn’t normally have a place.

“It’s a place which allows international artists to come through and play shows, and it allows a safe place for all these things to exist.”

Since 2011, Pool has taken a significant shift right, choosing to focus his work on American culture-war issues like LGBTQ rights. Tim Pool hosts a daily podcast on YouTube and is well known online for his inflammatory and discriminatory comments surrounding the LGBTQ community. One of Pool’s largest talking points surrounds a conspiracy theory that suggests that LGBTQ community deliberately recruits children into their movement for political purposes. This conspiracy also implies that there is a sexual element to this recruitment process. In the wake of a 2022 shooting at Club Q, an LGBTQ club in Colorado, Pool attempted to justify the attack by saying “Club Q had a grooming event”.

As reported by Loudwire, the post shared by Christianson was a quote tweet by Pool regarding an interview with mixed martial arts fighter, Sean Strickland. When asked whether he would accept having a gay son, Strickland returned the question to his interviewer who said that he would have “no problem with it”. In response to his interviewer, Strickland said: “You’re a weak f*****g man”. The fighter then went on to say that: “ten years ago, to be trans was a mental f****n’ illness and now all of a sudden, people like you have f****n’ weaselled your way into the world… you [Strickland’s interviewer] are an infection”. On January 17th, Tim Pool replied to Strickland’s interview, saying “F*****g A+ guy right here”. Evoking far-right sentiments of social disease with regards to LGBTQ people, both Pool’s and Strickland’s comments are intensely derogatory.

This thread was reposted by Architects’ Adam Christianson for a brief period, before being promptly removed. On January 19th, Christianson apologised for his actions, saying: “that retweet was a total accident!”. However, some online are sceptical of Christianson’s backpedalling, citing his history of reposting and liking tweets that share similar sentiments to those of Pool. Christianson has previously liked and retweeted content from other commentators like Zuby Music who has previously evoked conspiracies reminiscent of those pedalled by the likes of Tim Pool.

Speaking at a gig in Paris yesterday the band’s frontman, Sam Carter, said: “nobody on this stage judges anybody for their gender, their race, and whoever they are in love with. We never have, we never will”. Although the video does not explicitly mention Christianson’s online activity, many online have drawn a connection between the two events.

After announcing a US tour, starting in May of this year, Architects are currently on their European tour that will run until February.

Rock band Basement are the sole headliner announced so far, marking their third appearance at the festival after performing both in 2015 and 2022. The excitement is only set to escalate as the anticipation builds for the June weekender, with three additional headliners yet to be announced.

Adding a touch of nostalgia, Outbreak Festival presents special anniversary sets from Joyce Manor, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the seminal album ‘Never Hungover Again,’ American shoegazers Nothing performing ‘Guilty of Everything‘ from 2014, and The Hotelier marking a decade of their second album ‘Home, Like Noplace Is There.’ New Jersey post-hardcore artist Thursday will also contribute to the sentimental vibe with a set comprising tracks from their acclaimed albums ‘War All The Time‘ and ‘Full Collapse.’

Reflecting on the success of the 2023 edition, headlined by US hip-hop acts Denzel Curry and Death Grips, along with Converge and Bane, Outbreak Festival remains committed to its diverse lineup and its roots in hardcore and alternative music. Hailed as “the heart and soul of hardcore” in Huck magazine, it is a staple in the calendar for enthusiasts in the hardcore and counterculture scenes.

With a slew of singles already released ahead of the album drop, fans had fair warning of what Grove Street had planned for Path To Righteousness and with the final release of “Hunting Season” mere days ago, the tension and stakes could not be higher for a band on the edge of breaking out. And fans will undoubtedly be as hungry as ever to see the new songs performed in the live setting.

Speaking on the release of “Hunting Season,” the band have stated that the song “was written to highlight how being obsessed with scrutinising each other and watching people fall from grace, rather than helping each other and seeing people succeed, is hindering society, stopping it from flourishing. This kind of behaviour is detrimental to progression, both individually and as a collective.”

Originally named Grove Street Families, the Southampton metal crossover band can trace its roots to a project that was intended to be slightly tongue in cheek. Grabbing their name from infamous best selling video game Grand Theft Auto, Grove Street eventually dropped the Families portion from their moniker but retained both the intensity and light-hearted vibes in their music.

Once the band started getting noticed and the members acknowledged they had some legitimate metal chops, Grove Street landed a major coup by signing to Australian independent label UNFD where they have released Path To Righteousness. That success, coupled with their electrifying live shows, have made Grove Street a top band to watch out for.

Guitarist Chris Sanderson (known as Sandy) said of the band’s direction,“The years of slogging away gave us time to focus. We were still doing a hardcore thing, but we were just vibing. We hadn’t narrowed down the crossover sound we’ve got now. I’m glad we did, rather than rushing music out to keep algorithms happy. We took our time to make sure everything was perfect.”
