Best known for his role in Stranger Things, Wolfhard continues to build a parallel career as a filmmaker and musician, now adding a major classic-rock commission to his résumé. He was invited by the Harrison estate to create a visual companion for ‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’, originally released on Harrison’s 1973 album Living in the Material World and later a US number one single.

Despite his rise to fame as an actor, Wolfhard has established his career as a knowledgeable, talented rock musician himself, touring with previous bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys, as well as embarking on his first solo tour across North America post-debut album Happy Birthday. Wolfhard described the chance to work with the Harrison family as “a great honour”, calling George Harrison a huge and ongoing inspiration to his own artistic life. The video arrives more than five decades after the track first appeared, underscoring the continued cultural relevance of Harrison’s catalogue.

Rather than a performance clip, the video leans into handcrafted stop‑motion animation to evoke the spiritual warmth of the song. Viewers follow a Harrison-like figure wandering through the gardens of Friar Park, the musician’s historic estate in Henley‑on‑Thames, tending hedges, greeting gnomes and sailing across a dream-like landscape.​

The film is rich with Easter eggs for Beatles and Harrison fans, nodding to his solo career, spiritual journey and well-documented love of gardening. Wolfhard has said the concept hinges on the idea of a man finding solace and meaning in his relationship with the living world around him.

The production was mounted in collaboration with Toronto-based Nobody Told Me Studios and animation house Tye Down Pictures. A team of 20 Canadian stop‑motion artists built every element by hand, animating the story frame by frame to create a tactile feel that mirrors the song’s intimacy.​

While Wolfhard directed the overall piece, animator Akash Jones steered the animation direction, with Jason Baum and Michael Wamara producing. Dhani Harrison, George’s son and longtime collaborator David Zonshine served as executive producers, helping to guide the project from concept to release.

Dhani Harrison has publicly praised Wolfhard’s interpretation of his father’s song for a new generation. 

“Finn is one of the sweetest and most talented people I know of his generation, and he is the perfect person to direct a video for my dad. My dad would have loved this, and I hope his wonderful, creative, heartfelt ideas help this song reach another generation. Great job, Finn — we love you”.

The ensemble cast was presented on stage by Mendes, with a projection of who would be playing who on a screen behind them. Paul Mescal, who recently starred in Gladiator II, will play Paul McCartney, and Joseph Quinn will play George Harrison, as previously reported earlier this year. Barry Keoghan, who shot to fame in 2023’s Saltburn, and later as the partner of Sabrina Carpenter, will play Ringo Starr, and Harris Dickinson will play John Lennon in what is likely to be his biggest role to date.   

These castings won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has taken an interest in the rumours and clues that have come out since the four films were announced in February 2024. DEADLINE reported the lineup back in December, drawing from details and gossip around the four actors. Ridley Scott, Mescal’s director on Gladiator II, accidentally revealed the 29-year old’s involvement in a Q&A, Ringo Starr shared that Keoghan had taken drumming lessons, Dickinson refused to rule out playing Lennon, and Quinn dropped out of Bret Easton Ellis’ Relapse citing scheduling conflicts.

As part of the 2024 announcement, Mendes said he was “excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” and his exciting approach to the challenge has received the blessing of McCartney and Starr, as well as the families of Lennon and Harrison.  

The announcement was made at 8pm Las Vegas time, or 4am in the UK, leading some to question whether it was an April Fool’s Day joke. The disbelief surrounds the appearance of the four actors, with critics questioning if they look enough like their real-life counterparts to be convincing. Others noticed the resemblance between the promotional shot of the newly-announced cast, and an image of The Beatles taken at one of their final photoshoots.

Discussing the ambitious nature of the project, Mendes said: “Frankly, we need big cinematic events to get people out of the house. There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation, and I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that.” Mendes also used his CinemaCon appearance to elaborate on the release schedule, saying that all four films would be released “in proximity” of each other. 

Often cited as the most influential band of all time, any previous biopics on the group have felt half baked. Mendes’ approach will allow room for each Beatle to be explored, both as musicians and people, and the resulting films will be a treat for audiophiles and cinephiles alike.

Frith shared his discovery on social media, writing, “I picked up this tape years ago that said ‘Beatles Demos’ on it. I just figured it was a tape off a bootleg record. After hearing it last night for the first time, it sounds like a master tape. The quality is unreal. How is this even possible to have, what sounds like a Beatles 15-song Decca tapes master?”

The tape, recorded on January 1st, 1962, features a youthful Beatles lineup with Pete Best on drums. The band had auditioned for Decca Records in London, only to be famously rejected. Decca’s decision is often cited as one of the biggest blunders in music history, as The Beatles would go on to sign with Parlophone Records and release ‘Please Please Me‘, launching their legendary career.

In an interview with CBC, Frith described the surreal moment of discovering the tape’s authenticity. “I thought it was just a reel-to-reel tape that somebody had put bootleg things on,” he said. However, after listening closely and consulting with Beatles experts, it became clear the recording was a genuine piece of music history. “It felt like the Beatles were right in the room,” Frith added.

Following the revelation, Frith was connected with Jack Herschorn, the former owner of Vancouver’s Mushroom Records, who originally brought the tape to Canada. Herschorn had obtained it in the 1970s during a trip to London when a producer gifted him the recording. Despite being encouraged to sell copies, he ultimately chose not to.

“I took it back and I thought about it quite a bit,” Herschorn explained to CBC. “I didn’t want to put it out because I didn’t think it was a totally moral thing to do.” Recognizing the Beatles’ immense legacy, he believed they deserved proper credit and royalties for their work. “It deserves to come out properly,” he added.

Frith, too, has no immediate plans to profit from the tape. Instead, he has made a generous offer to Decca Records, giving them the opportunity to release the recording if they choose. Additionally, he extended a personal invitation to Paul McCartney, suggesting the former Beatle visit Neptoon Records in Vancouver to receive the tape in person.

The discovery of this long-lost Beatles recording has reignited fascination with the band’s early days, serving as a powerful reminder of their humble beginnings before they became global icons.

Speculation around the casting took a turn back in November with Hollywood gossip reporter Jeff Sneider hinting that Joseph Quinn, best known for his breakout role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things, is set to play George Harrison. This week, author Bret Easton Ellis revealed on his podcast that Quinn had exited his directorial debut, Relapse, citing scheduling conflicts with Mendes’ films, all but confirming Quinn’s involvement.

If true, Quinn will join a rumoured star-studded lineup. Paul Mescal, fresh off his role in Gladiator 2, is reportedly set to play Paul McCartney, a detail inadvertently let slip by director Ridley Scott during a recent Q&A. Barry Keoghan, who Ringo Starr himself confirmed had started taking drumming lessons, is tipped for the role of Ringo. Meanwhile, Harris Dickinson, who recently starred in Babygirl, has declined to rule himself out of playing John Lennon, calling the opportunity “a pretty formidable force to try to do.”  

First announced in February 2024, Mendes and producer Pippa Harris have promised an “epic cinematic experience” with a unique artistic approach. “Four films, told from four different perspectives, which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time,” Harris said in a press release. Mendes added: “I’m honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.”

The films have the blessing of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison. However, fans are divided on the casting rumours, with some scrutinising the actors’ physical resemblances to their real-life counterparts. One X user wrote: “The guy who will play John Lennon is way too tall. The guy playing Ringo hardly has a nose at all.”

How Mendes plans to balance historical accuracy with artistic storytelling remains unclear. Some fans have expressed a desire to see the band’s complex relationships explored, rather than a straightforward retelling of famous moments like their decision to stop touring or the inspiration behind certain lyrics.

Given the focus on individual perspectives, there is speculation that each film will reflect the unique personality of its central Beatle. This approach, if confirmed, could set the biopics apart from other music biopics like Rocketman or Bohemian Rhapsody. Instead, inspiration may be taken from the more-stylised Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann.    

While films like Nowhere Boy have touched on aspects of the Beatles’ story, Mendes’ project marks the first true biopic of the band. It follows a recent resurgence of Beatles content, with Disney+ hosting documentaries like Get Back and Beatles ’64. As of now, there’s no confirmation that the new films will land on a streaming platform.

All four films are expected to release in 2027, leaving fans with plenty of time to debate casting choices, and speculate on storylines and creative approaches. For now, the breadcrumbs of information being dropped by industry insiders have Beatles enthusiasts poring over every detail.

With Joseph Quinn now all but confirmed as the “quiet Beatle,” the Fab Four appear to be set. The spotlight now turns to Mendes, his cast, and his crew to meet the towering expectations of the British public, who recently voted the band “the ultimate British group”, and millions more fans worldwide.

Dated September 29, 1971, the letter was written during a pivotal moment in both artists’ lives. Clapton had recently disbanded Derek and the Dominos following the tragic death of Duane Allman and had just performed at the Concert for Bangladesh, organized by Lennon’s former bandmate, George Harrison. Lennon, meanwhile, had released Imagine earlier that year and was preparing to release “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” in December.

In the letter, Lennon imagines a lineup featuring Klaus Voormann on bass, Jim Keltner on drums, Nicky Hopkins on piano, and Phil Spector as producer. He envisioned a group free from the constraints of traditional bands, stating: “Our uppermost concern is to have a happy group in body & mind. Nobody will be asked to do anything that they don’t want to, no-one will be held to any contract of any sort… and of course, we had YOU in mind as soon as we decided.” Lennon even included Yoko Ono as a creative force, noting that spouses were welcome on stage or behind the scenes, as was Hopkins’ wife.

Had the project materialised, it would have been a meeting of legends. Clapton, no stranger to supergroups—having been part of Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos—would have brought his bluesy guitar to a lineup brimming with talent. The letter hints at the collaborative freedom Lennon was searching for after the dissolution of The Beatles, a way to rekindle the energy he felt rock had lost.

The draft, reportedly in near-mint condition, is part of an eclectic mixture that also includes a lost letter from Mozart, a pair of Mahatma Gandhi’s sandals, and a photograph of Marie Curie. The sale will take place at 6pm, with Lennon’s letter expected to attract significant attention.

While the £100,000 estimate is impressive, it pales in comparison to other Lennon memorabilia, such as his psychedelic Rolls-Royce Phantom, which sold for $2.23 million in 1985, or the Imagine piano, bought by George Michael for $2.1 million in 2000. These figures become even more astronomical when you account for inflation ($6.5 million and $3.85 million respectively).

Lennon and Clapton’s friendship and musical partnership were well established by 1971. Clapton famously played the iconic solo on the Beatles track ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ and had performed with Lennon in the Plastic Ono Band during their 1969 ‘Live Peace in Toronto’ concert. The pair also played together as part of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Rock and Roll Circus’, when they played under the name ‘The Dirty Mac’. This letter marked a new step in Lennon and Clapton’s relationship—a potential collaboration where both artists could continue to push musical boundaries.

This letter serves as a testament to Lennon’s restless creativity, even after achieving monumental success with The Beatles. The dream supergroup never came to fruition, but the draft offers a tantalising “what if” for fans of both Lennon and Clapton.

With its mix of rock history, personal insight, and Lennon’s characteristic wit, this letter provides a unique snapshot of a moment when two of rock’s greatest icons nearly joined forces. Fans and collectors will be watching closely as the hammer drops on this unique piece of history.

Set against a backdrop of a changing America—marked by racial tensions, the nuclear threat, and the aftermath of JFK’s assassination—the documentary opens with a powerful juxtaposition. A rousing JFK speech about victory cuts abruptly to sombre footage of his funeral and the aftermath, situating The Beatles’ arrival as a moment of relief for a nation in mourning.

Their 14-day US trip overwhelmed both fans and the press. Camera crews struggled to keep up with the frenzy, and reporters were swept up in the chaos, abandoning interviews to chase shots of the band. Girls outside hotels held placards proclaiming, “Elvis is dead. Long live The Beatles,” while Vickie Brenna-Costa, one of the screaming fans at the Plaza Hotel, recalls, “We couldn’t contain ourselves, it was a natural reaction.”

Directed by David Tedeschi and produced by Martin Scorsese, the documentary captures the band’s novelty in America, with footage of the Fab Four cramped in hotel rooms, surrounded by cameras, smoking and flipping through magazines. Their famed working-class humor charmed the American press, even if some cultural nuances were lost in translation. George Harrison’s later reflections underscore this, describing Liverpool as a place where “everyone’s a comedian.” He adds, “Go through the Mersey Tunnel, and the man at the toll will be a comedian.”

Paul McCartney’s present-day reflections provide some of the documentary’s most touching moments. At his photography exhibit ‘1963-64: Eyes of the Storm’, he gestures to photos of fans behind wooden barriers, saying, “America to us was the land of freedom. It’s funny because when we got there, we learned that wasn’t quite the story.”  

Another poignant moment comes from an interview on the train from New York to Washington, where a reporter asks McCartney, “What place will the story of The Beatles have in Western culture?” McCartney laughs, brushing off the question: “You must be kidding with that question. Culture? It’s not culture.” When pressed, he offers a typically understated answer: “It’s a good laugh.” Decades later, this remark feels both modest and prescient, as the band’s cultural legacy remains undeniable.

The screaming, the placards, and the devotion weren’t just mania; they were expressions of a deeply personal connection. Author Joe Queenan becomes emotional when discussing hearing them for the first time, sitting alongside his sister at the radio.   

Ringo Starr recalls the trip as the moment he felt the band had truly “made it,” exclaiming, “We were here! America! New York!” But for John Lennon, the craziness had darker undertones. Photographer Harry Benson recounts Lennon’s unease about the violence in America, amplified by JFK’s assassination, and how he was worried about how fast a good situation could turn bad.

This documentary dives into that transformative period, combining rare archival footage, captured by the late Albert and David Maysles, and new commentary to explore their impact on music, culture, and race relations in a rapidly changing America.

While Scorsese is a producer here, he has previously directed music documentaries on Bob Dylan (‘No Direction Home’) and George Harrison (‘Living in the Material World’), both of which were praised by fans of the artists.

The film premiered in New York City on Sunday (November 24), attended by Tedeschi, Scorsese and Paul McCartney. Fans were shocked to see him in attendance, with the musician recently touring his ‘Got Back’ show around South and Central America. His last date in the Americas was in Mexico City on November 17, and he is set to continue the tour in Europe, with UK dates in Manchester and London.

The Beatles’ debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 catapulted them to fame, drawing over 73 million viewers. Shortly after, they made music history by occupying the top five spots on the Billboard Hot 100 with hits like ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ and ‘She Loves You’.

The lead single, ‘My Sweet Lord’, became a global sensation, topping the charts in several countries, including in the United States. It was the first solo Beatle single to reach No. 1. According to a statement obtained by Deadline, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, known for Skyfall and 1917, said he is “honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time“, and that he is “excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.”

The iconic Liverpudlian band have been at the centre of a multitude of documentaries and films over the past six decades, but this project marks the first that has acquired full music rights, including scripted storytelling freedoms surrounding the musicians’ lives. 2021’s The Beatles: Get Back showcased a more intimate glimpse into the band’s relationship and songwriting process, allowing audiences to view never-before-seen footage and private conversations between the quartet, a far cry from the camp musical comedy that was 1964’s A Hard Day’s Night.

Meanwhile, the band have already been making headlines the past few months after releasing their emotional final single ‘Now And Then‘ in November 2023, a demo that had once been left in the musical abyss, now brought to the surface after the rediscovery of a lost 1970 John Lennon recording. 

More recently, a member of the public has come forward in a wholesome turn of events to reunite McCartney with his most beloved bass guitar, one that was deemed to be of huge importance in The Beatles’ history, having been used to record major moments in their discography, and famously pictured during the group’s rehearsals for their legendary debut performance on CBS’ The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. The woman who claimed to have found the £10million Hofner 500/1 ‘violin’ bass, which was stolen in 1972, returned it to the musician last week more than 50 years later, and is hoping for some form of reward.

Tuesday’s film series announcement has generated an immense amount of online buzz, with Beatles fans now speculating as to who should be cast, throwing Hollywood stars like Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal and Aaron Taylor-Johnson into the ring of discussion. Drummer Ringo Starr broke his silence on the news, taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) to comment:

He continued, “It’s quite a sad song, in a beautiful way, and it’s probably one of the first songs I tried to teach myself on guitar. It’s one of those songs that gives me a lot of emotion.”

Perhaps best known for his work with the bands The Rascals and The Last Shadow Puppets, which he formed with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, Kane has also become a notable solo artist. Releasing five studio albums to date, the singer has also collaborated with Turner, Noel Gallagher and French actress Clemence Poesy.

In 2017, Kane, along with fellow musicians Matt Bellamy of Muse, Nic Cester of Jet, Graham Coxon of Blur, Sean Payne of the Zutons and Nine Inch Nails and Jamie Davis formed The Jaded Hearts Club-a Beatles tribute band. Initially only playing songs by The Beatles, the band have also covered songs by Cream, The Who and The Kinks.

Kane has recently supported Arctic Monkeys on their UK and Ireland tour.
