Since 2016, Vegyn has been a prominent producer, working with alternative Hip-Hop artists like JPEG MAFIA, featuring production on his third studio album All My Heroes Are Cornballs. Vegyn’s talents have also touched the mainstream, collaborating with Travis Scott on the wildly successful 2018 album Astroworld.

Outside of his collaborations with big-name American hip-hop and R&B artists, Vegyn has released a steady stream of solo albums, EPs, and singles. Since the release of his latest album, The Head Hurts but the Heart Knows the Truth, in May of 2023, Vegyn has released three singles, the most recent of which was released today (January 16). ‘The Path Less Travelled’ is a laid-back bouncy track that features Vegyn’s signature digital glitchy soundscape layered on top of melodic piano chords, and snappy drum rhythms.

‘The Path Less Travelled’ is the third single released in the run up to his sixth full album THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS. Posting on Instagram, Vegyn announced THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS, along with the full thirteen-song track list.

Speaking with Gadfly Magazine about his creative process in June of 2023, Thornally said “I like electronic music because there aren’t as many tethers to conventional structures—it’s so much more fluid.” This approach to music production has led to the development of Vegyn’s unique, genre-defying, electronic compositions. Thornalley continues to prove himself as one of the most creative and distinctive producers in the UK electronic scene. With the release of ‘The Path Less Travelled’, ‘Halo Flip’, and ‘Makeshift Tourniquet’, Thornalley’s upcoming album is gearing up to be one of his best so far.

“Many hate us and wish we didn’t exist. Many are annoyed by our wanting to be married like everyone else or use the correct restroom like everyone else,” he writes. “Many don’t see anything wrong with passing down the same old values that send thousands of kids into suicidal depression each year. So we say pride and we express love for who and what we are. Because who else will in earnest?”

The note mentions his father behaving transphobically when Ocean was a child, saying ““I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty,” he writes. “That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.” However, Cooksey denied the accusations and claimed that Ocean has ruined “future financial opportunities in the music and film industries” and also called him a “fraud who only cared about making millions of dollars”

Oceans attorney confirmed to Pitchfork that the judge had ruled in Oceans favour and said “It was a super sad case, I am sorry that my client had to go through this and am glad that we could bring closure.”

This is not the first time that Frank Ocean has mentioned financial issues with his father. Back in 2012, Ocean tweeted that his father wanted to sue him for $1000,000.

Taking place in the capital’s Victoria Park from July 15-16, this year’s festival saw sets from the likes of Frank Ocean, Miller, and Solange. However the festival has today made headlines for all the wrong reasons, after attendee Louisa Davies claimed that the festival’s security staff sexual assaulted her during the aforementioned Ocean’s headline set on Friday night.

In a piece written for W Magazine, Davies described her experience, writing “A line of security guards walked towards me in a yellow line, and naturally (as I am a sucker for authority), I moved. One by one, the men walked past me… I felt a hand run up my thigh, and it then tuck itself inside my shorts. I froze, pushed the man away from me, and before I had chance to think, he had gone.”

In addition to this, Davies claims that it took nearly 40 minutes for her complaints of the assault to be addressed, continuing to say “If the same urgency and seriousness that was applied to drugs was issued for assaults and derogatory attitudes towards women, perhaps the problem [of sexual assault at festivals] would be less severe.”

Sexual assault at festivals has become a burning issue in modern musical culture, and back in May, several music festivals’ official websites participated in a “blackout” to affirm their dedication to tackling the issue.

Lovebox were not one of the festivals that took part in this blackout, and as of yet the festival’s organisers MAMA Group have not yet responded to these accusations.

The RnB singer has been expected to come back to the live music scene during this summer’s festivals, however, he cancelled his headline set at Sasquatch! Festival in Washington, Hangout Music Festival in Alabama, and Primeva Sound Festival, which took place last weekend in Barcelona, stating it was “production delays” which rendered him unable to perform.

However, he is set to headline on the Sunday of Parklife Festival in Heaton Park, Manchester, (June 11th) as well as tonight’s performance.

Alongside returning to the stage, Ocean has his own merch tent at NorthSide festival, selling official blonded RADIO merch, supporting his regular radio show on Beats 1, and t-shirts printed with the Blonde album artwork on the front. blonde is the second studio album by Frank Ocean, which was released in summer 2016.

Alongside all this excitement, Ocean has recently made a cameo in Nikes short film, “The Hero’s Journey” directed by Tom Sach. The short film is 38 minutes long, and was screened on Thursday at Sachs’s Space Camp event. Oceans cameo is barely 10 seconds long and non speaking, however he is credited as “Studio Master, Inspiration.” You can watch the film here.

Earlier in the year, Harris had tweeted that he had “worked with the greatest artists of our generation !!!” on the LP, and today the full, extensive list of artists has been revealed.

Music fans will have been unable to escape the album’s first track ‘Slide’, featuring Frank Ocean and Migos, as well as ‘Heatstroke’ With Young Thug, Pharrell, and Ariana Grande. Now, a new single has been teased along with the album’s announcement, which appears to feature Future and Khalid.

The rest of the album’s features include Travis Scott, Kehlani Katy Perry, Big Sean, John Legend, Schoolboy Q, D.R.A.M., Nicki Minaj, Lil Yachty, Jessie Reyez, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Snoop Dogg, in what is quite possibly the most guest-laden album of recent years.

There has been no confirmation as of yet as to whether there will be a Funk Wav Bounces Vol.2, or indeed if there is a Funk Wav Bounce anthology in the works, but the hype is already building, as Calvin Harris continues his one man mission to dominate the airwaves for the summer.

Also confirmed for the event are Boy Better Know, A Tribe Called Quest, London Grammar, Fatboy Slim, Danny Brown,  Two Door Cinema Club and Sampha, you can see the full line-up below.

Last year’s event saw triumphant sets from both The Chemical Brothers and Major Lazer. Parklife will be held on June 10-11 in Manchester’s Heaton Park, and tickets will be on sale from 9am this Thursday, February 2.

Recently, The 1975 have also been confirmed to be playing at new British festival TRNSMT, alongside the likes of Radiohead, and belle and Sebastian. Rumours have emerged over the last few days too, that Frank Ocean may have collaborated with DJ Calvin Harris, with the Scotsman publishing a Snapchat of an unknown song, that appeared to have Ocean’s vocals on it.

This outstanding headliner is the first taste of great things to come for Lovebox 2017.”
The announcement and subsequent performance will mark Ocean’s long-awaited return to the stage, with his last performance coming in July 2014. Also long-awaited was the release of Ocean’s second studio album Blonde earlier this year, which garnered much critical acclaim in the process.

Ocean also gave his first interview in three years recently, to the New York Times, following a prolonged absence from the music press, after the release of Blonde. The interview told that Ocean had already been working on new music, but that he may also never release an album again. The interview with NY Times also confirmed that even now, Ocean is working on new music in an “anonymous music studio”. Ocean himself has recently parted ways with Def Jam, and suggested that he may even move away from full-length album releases in the future, saying “Because I’m not in a record deal, I don’t have to operate in an album format. I can operate in half-a-song format.”

Ocean- who caught the eye by turning up to the dinner wearing black and white checkerboard print Vans- brought along his mother, Katonya Breaux, who excitedly tweeted during the evening “I am so blessed to have a son that includes me in his once in a lifetime events!!! I just hugged our First Lady!!!!”

Chance, meanwhile, brought along his father, Ken Bennett, who was previously an aide to the former mayor of Chicago Harold Washington, where he also worked with the then-senator Obama. Chance tweeted prior to the event to thank his father for raising him so well, to the point that they could enjoy such an evening.

Chance also spoke to reporters about the thing he was looking forward to most about the State Dinner: namely to conitnue the “Recurring dance battle that me and the President have had going on for a few years.”

When questioned further about the current winner of the battle, Chance confidently that he was”very high in the polls […] I’m just a great dancer. I have the fit, I have the build, I take it very seriously.”

It is said that Boys Don’t Cry will be released this month (July) a year later than the original announcement of its release back in 2015. The ‘date due’ has been displayed on his website:

Ocean’s initial career was as a ghost writer for artists such as Justin Bieber Brandy, and John Legend. His solo career took off with his mixtape release of Nostalgia, Ultra in 2011 where the singles ‘Novacane’ and ‘Swim Good’ gave him prominent attention. Likewise, his controversial single ‘American Wedding’ drew further attention as it was said to be far too similar the famous ‘Hotel California’ by The Eagles.

In 2010 he changed his name to Frank Ocean: it was said that he was inspired by the 1960 film Ocean’s 11.

Concert promoters Live Nation released the following statement:

“After last night’s concert  it was necessary to seek medical advice due to vocal issues Frank Ocean experienced during the show. It has subsequently been confirmed that Frank has suffered a small tear to one of his vocal cords and has received medical advice that he must rest his voice. This makes the completion of his remaining Australian dates impossible. Unfortunately due to Frank Ocean’s tight tour schedule, it is not possible to schedule replacement dates, however we will be working to confirm a return to Australia as soon as is practical.”

Ocean’s most recent release Channel Orange peaked at number 9 on Australian charts.
