American pop singer Billie Eilish has announced a surprise, intimate show for London on the 29th of August. The artist broke the news via her social media accounts in between headlining sets at Reading and Leeds festivals.

Much to the delight of her scores of UK fans, Eilish teased a last minute performance at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London-a far more intimate setting than the star is accustomed to. Releasing a poster to go along with the announcement, the show is a one night only performance and will be followed by her brother Finneas performing a headlining show at the same venue the next night.

One night only in London! Tickets on sale this Friday at 10am BST https://t.co/86to0ZmLX6 pic.twitter.com/6Nbi0tD5rg — FINNEAS (@finneas) August 2, 2023

Eilish, speaking via social media, said, “London! Doing a special lil performance for you. If you signed up for email alerts at my pop-up this week, you’ll get an email with a unique code to access tickets.” Finneas, Eilish’s brother and notable for his award winning production work on her records, will play a sold out show the following night.

Eilish is fresh off her headlining gigs at Leeds festival (25th August) and Reading last night (27 August). At her show in Leeds, Eilish became the youngest solo headliner ever to grace the famous festival’s stages at only 21 years old and can now boast both Reading and Leeds festivals and Glastonbury headlining slots. And the young performer certainly dazzled the crowd with a set that will live long in the memory for those in attendance.

The last time Eilish was at Reading and Leeds festival, the singer was only a teenager but, in the time since, she has become arguably one of the biggest pop stars on the planet-her albums and tours routinely garnering rave reviews and awards. Together with Finneas to accompany her on multiple instruments, Eilish treated the crowd to a massive setlist- containing a staggering 20 song set during both performances, which included the hit Barbie soundtrack song, “What Was I Made For?.”

But the singer showed a shrewd understanding of what her audience wished to see from her and peppered her setlist with career-spanning numbers that was sure to please both the uninitiated and die-hard fans. The set showcased what Eilish is both known for and what has shot her into super-stardom, particularly shining vocally on the more softer songs but then ramping up the excitement when belting party tunes that also had the crowd on their feet, jumping and dancing.
Those lucky fans that have been able to grab tickets to Eilish’s special Electric Ballroom performance are almost certainly guaranteed a once in a lifetime experience, the likes of which may not be repeated by a star who is only getting bigger and brighter. Tickets can be found here.

Singer-songwriter Arlo Parks (Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho) has released two tracks as part of the latest Spotify Singles series. The event means to celebrate artists nominated for the Grammy’s Best New Artist award. Typically consisting of one cover of a previous nominee, as well as a new version of one of the artist’s old songs, Parks has given her voice to Kaytranada’s 2016 track “You’re the One“.

The song originally appeared on the Haitian-Canadian producer’s album 99.9%, and featured vocals from LA singer-songwriter Syd. Parks said of the song that “Syd’s voice in ‘You’re the One’ always had this effortless beauty to it in my eyes and I wanted to cover it to expose the romance and yearning behind the lyrics.“

Recording in New York City’s Electric Lady Studios, Parks also re-recorded her recent track “Softly“, which was released only earlier this year. She said “It was an honour to be able to sing my new song ‘Softly’ too, to highlight the beginning of a new and beautiful chapter in my career and celebrate being nominated for Best New Artist.”

Parks can keep her fingers crossed for this year’s Grammys, having also been nominated for Best Alternative Music Album in celebration of her 2021 debut Collapsed in Sunbeams. The record did well enough for her last year, winning the Hyundai Mercury Prize for best album and being nominated for three awards at the 2021 BRITs (Album of the Year/Best New Artist/Best British Female Solo Artist). Fans weren’t too dismissive either, with it reaching no.3 on the UK Albums Chart.

And she’s not the only one celebrating recent successes. Finneas started off this year’s Spotify Singles series with a cover of the Bon Iver track “Flume“, as well as redoing his 2021 track “Medieval“. Some of the other artists nominated for Best New Artist include Baby Keem and Glass Animals. The awards will take place on April 3rd.

At the young age of 21, Parks has already enjoyed a number of impressive successes over the past few years. Having appeared on The Graham Norton Show and Later … with Jools Holland last year, as well as winning the Breakthrough Artist Award at the 2021 BRIT Awards, who only knows what she’s up to next.

Although we do actually know a little bit about that. She’s due for some live stuff soon, supporting huge names such as Harry Styles, Clairo and Billie Eilish. For a full list of tour dates, you can look here.

Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr recently admitted in an interview that he called his Mum due to the excitement of working on the new James Bond movie, and to be fair to him, he had a lot to boast about. The soundtrack for the 25th Bond film featured him working on one of the most famous film franchises of all time, with some of the most well-known names in both popular and film-music circles.

Some of the things he could have mentioned to her include working with soundtrack-extraordinaire Hans Zimmer, or popular US-duo Billie Eilish and Finneas for the film’s title track – “No Time To Die“.

Speaking in an interview on some of the highlights here, Marr noted his excitement in getting to play the iconic James Bond riff on the title track. “That really was a highlight. When I did it, I went and phoned my mum, ‘Guess what I’ve just done, Mum!’“.

However, the Bond movie wasn’t Marr’s first time on a film set. He also worked with Zimmer for the 2010 Christopher Nolan movie Inception, an experience that Marr credits as shaping his music in a more cinematic direction ever since. “It’s made me double down on some things because I didn’t realise until I was told that guitars in films were a no-no for a few decades because of some atrocities that were committed in the 80s. Inception changed that. It was such a big movie …. Also, because I used a 12-string guitar on all of the [scores], it’s got me back to playing the 12-string.“

Marr has also been very vocal about what working with Eilish/Finneas was like, describing the pair as “a natural musical family .… From a technical point of view, [Finneas’] process is so modern that he can make these amazing records on a laptop …. My experience of working with [them] is just that they are musicians. The way that they conduct themselves and their processes are the same as other serious musicians …. Billie and Finneas are no different – they’re just the modern version …. Let’s put it this way, they would have been able to hold their own in any era.”

In terms of Marr’s career outside the world of 007, he’s got a new album soon for release on February 25th, to be titled Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. You can listen to his recent single, “Night and Day“, below. And he’s also got a tour in line with Blondie this April, details of which you can see here.

Now the novelty of the new year has faded away and the music industry has gotten over its first few dry weeks of January, you can now brush the dust off your 2022 bingo cards and cross out Taylor Swift beefing with Damon Albarn. Obviously. In an interview with the LA Times (adequately titled For Damon Albarn, modern life is still pretty much rubbish) the Gorillaz mastermind and ex(?)-Blur frontman tells us of his love for Billie Eilish and her brother/bandmate Finneas, describing her as “A really interesting songwriter”; but things really kicked off when a question was posed about country-gone-pop legend Taylor Swift. Albarn asked the interviewer, Mikael Wood, for an artist today that doesn’t rely on attitude to survive, to which Swift was brought into the conversation. Then, blunt as you like, Albarn drops the now infamous, “She doesn’t write her own songs.” Obviously… Taylor Swift wasn’t very happy.

@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really fucked up to try and discredit my writing. WOW. https://t.co/t6GyXBU2Jd

— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) January 24, 2022

Swift’s response on Twitter comes very strong. Stronger than I’d anticipate from someone that must by this point be used to being antagonized a little; from her number of bouts with Kanye, and general finger-pointing from the public, she has hardly been far from commenting on what people have to say about her work. “I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this.” She wrote, “I write all of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and so damaging.” Long-time Taylor Swift producer, Jack Antonoff, got in on the action by adding, “i’ve never met damon albarn and he’s never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs taylor writes and brings in.” In the original interview, Albarn did say this after being told that she co-writes her music, “That doesn’t count. I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes.”. Does Swift have a co-writer? Isn’t anyone that works with a producer as prolific as Antonoff susceptible to a little studio magic in the form of tweaks and ideas? Who’s to say, I wasn’t there.

i’ve never met damon albarn and he’s never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs taylor writes and brings in. herb. — jackantonoff (@jackantonoff) January 24, 2022

Since the news broke yesterday, however, Albarn has jumped back online apologising for the quote. Claiming “I totally agree with you. I had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand.” Swift is yet to respond to this.
