Depeche Mode are back, but not just on stage. Their new concert film, Depeche Mode: M, is set to hit cinemas worldwide in late 2025, bringing the energy of their Memento Mori tour to the big screen. Directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frías de la Parra (I’m No Longer Here, I Don’t Expect Anyone to Believe Me), the movie captures three 2023 performances at Mexico City’s Foro Sol, witnessed by nearly 200,000 fans.

But M isn’t just a concert film, it’s layered in culture. Frías weaves together live performances with rich, reflective footage that explores Mexico’s intimate relationship with death – think Día de los Muertos, Aztec iconography, and candlelit vigils, touching on the album’s themes of mortality. It’s a cinematic fusion of music and mortality, capturing how Depeche Mode’s lyrical exploration of mortality finds resonance in Mexican cultural traditions.

Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan said in a statement, “At its core, M is about the deep connection between music, culture, and people, and Fernando Frías did a beautiful job telling that story through the lens of Mexican culture and our shows in Mexico City”. It’s a nod to how universal themes: life, loss, transcendence, can be expressed through the pairing of two powerful art forms. Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival in June 2025, the film received an enthusiastic reception. Critics praised its “expressive and dynamic cinematic” approach, noting emotional live sequences set within in a broader cultural landscape.

The movie is formatted for IMAX and global cinema release starting October 28, 2025, through Sony Music Vision, Trafalgar Releasing, and special event partners. It will be shown in over 2,500 theatres across more than 60 countries, a sign of the band’s enduring international reach.

The circumstances surrounding the release of M is deeply poignant. It’s the first major cinematic project released after the death of founding member Andy Fletcher in 2022. The emotional undercurrents of Memento Mori, a title meaning “remember you must die”, are already woven into the album, but here they’re reframed within Mexico’s cultural lens.

In the lead up to the Talking Heads’ 1984 tour that followed their fifth studio album, Speaking Tongues, released in 1983, David Byrne and Co enlisted the directorial help of Jonathon Demme to create a concert film. Directed by the man who went on to make the 1991 classic Silence of the Lambs, Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense went on to win the National Society of Film Critics’ (NSFC) award for best non-fiction film. Founded in 1966, the NSFC is known in the film industry as one of the ‘big four’, making the 1984 award among the most prestigious of the year.

In March of 2023, film studio A24, known for the production of critically acclaimed films like Ari Aster’s Misommar, Daniel Kwan’s and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, acquired the distribution rights for Stop Making Sense. In September of 2023, the film was restored and re-released in public cinemas across the world. Alongside the film, a remastered track list from the feature was released both online and on physical formats. Financially, A24’s distribution deal was wildly successful. According to Variety, the re-release drew $5m (£3.9m) in sales, a figure that, admittedly by a small margin, outstripped the film’s original run in 1984. The film was not only successful at the box office, but it was also a hit with audiences, with viral footage from 2023 showing audiences leaping out of their seats to dance along to the 16-track setlist.

Given the popularity of the re-release, and the film’s 40th anniversary landing on this year, Stop Making Sense will return to cinemas once again. Seeing limited release across the US, Canada, and UK, cinemagoers will be able to catch the show starting January 27. Tickets are currently available, but make sure to grab them fast, as there are only six screenings currently scheduled in the United Kingdom, five of which are at the Prince Charles Cinema in London.

As well as the film’s re-re-release, A24 has announced that they will sell a collection of limited-edition merchandise. The September 2023 release saw a range of clothing and a DVD/BluRay edition being sold. This year’s showing will bring with it a Zine, as well as a pre-sale for another round of home releases on January 27th.

Whether you are a long-standing Talking Heads fan or you were born over a decade after the band’s final studio album, Stop Making Sense proves the enduring appeal of David Byrne’s enigmatic band.

London’s King Charles Cinema will be hosting Stop Making Sense on the 27th of January, the 24th of February, the 30th of March, the 27th of April, and the 25th of May. Additionally, the Warwick University’s Student Cinema will feature the film on the 22nd of February.

Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, has announced a new project titled The Time Experience Project. Described as a creative collective, the group is aiming to release a modern rock opera next Friday and have dropped the first single, “Brings Me Home.”

The new project appears to be a collective project in every sense, as Stewart has enlisted the efforts of musicians, actors, writers, filmmakers and composers to realise his new vision. The Time Experience Project will release their debut album, Who To Love on Friday, 20 October and centres around an immersive rock opera experience.

Speaking on the conceptual nature of the record, Stewart offered, “The songs on this album are centred around the elusive nature of time, how it seems to speed up or slow down depending on your mental state. Through the music and lyrics, we try to interpret this feeling and how life’s journey can become serpentine and surreal as we wander through moments of sadness, melancholy, love addiction and pure ecstasy.”

The album will also be accompanied by a quasi music video/film and will have its premier in Rome, Italy on 19 October, the day before the release of the album. Shown as part of the Rome Film Festival, the video stars Italian actress Greta Scarano and band Mokadelic.

Elaborating on “Brings Me Home” and the short film, Stewart added, “The short film revolves around a character who is struggling with anxiety and loneliness, reflected in both the music and the actions of the protagonist. It’s a song about the power of real love; about how something as simple as holding someone’s hand or seeing their face can make us feel at home, even amid chaos. In a world that is constantly changing and moving at a rapid pace, it is important to slow down and connect with others in a meaningful way. This song reminds us that we all need a place to call home, both physically and emotionally.”

The Eurythmics, comprising the duo of Stewart and Annie Lennox, enjoyed immense success and popularity before their split in 1990. Perhaps best known for their smash hit song, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” the group scored a number of UK and US hits that saw them cememnt their place as one of the era’s greatest synth-pop bands.

Both Stewart and Lennox continued to enjoy success as a music producer and solo artist respectively throughout the 90s and beyond, before reforming the Eurythmics twice in 1999 and 2005. Earlier this year, the group celebrated “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’ 40th anniversary.

It has been confirmed that David Bowie will receive a stone at London’s Music Walk Of Fame, the music-orientated attraction located in the capital’s historic Camden town. The beloved “Starman” singer’s stone will be unveiled on 15th September 2022 during a tribute at Camden Town Tube Station; set to attend the unveiling are a host of Bowie’s colleagues, peers and friends.

The Music Walk Of Fame founder Lee Bennett has given the following statement concerning Bowie’s induction, “David Bowie is a global influence, one of the ultimate influencers, and sooner or later we had to have him on the Music Walk Of Fame. Our intention is for this to be the highest honour a music figure can receive in the UK and beyond; the unveiling of David’s stone ensures that legacy. We have huge plans for the future, but for now let’s celebrate one of the greats of music.”

The legendary artist’s influence and legacy is firmly cemented within modern popular music; Bowie’s presence is also felt in all avenues within arts, culture and the entrainment industry. Born David Robert Jones in 1947 in London, the late singer would have celebrated his 75th Birthday this year. The singer tragically passed away in 2016 from cancer just days after releasing his 26th and final album, Blackstar.

Bowie’s posthumous induction into the Music Walk Of Fame means that the singer joins the ranks of the UK’s most beloved artists. Those already incorporated within the curated experience include The Who, Soul II Soul, Ska group Madness and iconic singer and Camden favourite Amy Winehouse. The Music Walk Of Fame first opened its doors in November 2019; the first act to receive a stone was The Who, the “Pinball Wizard” group was inducted during its launch. The following year, Madness and Amy Winehouse were honoured with a stone on the popular Camden walk.

After Bowie’s upcoming induction ceremony, the new film Moonage Daydream will hold its exclusive release in IMAX cinemas. The forthcoming feature will start its initial cinematic release at IMAX theatres on 16th September 2022; Moonage Daydream will be available to watch at UK cinemas on 23rd September 2022. Directed by Brett Morgen, the film has been described as a “feature-length experiential cinematic odyssey” which “explores Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey.”

A statement concerning the upcoming release states, “Moonage Daydream illuminates the life and genius of David Bowie, one of the most prolific and influential artists of our time. Morgen has constructed a sublime cinematic experience that will provide audiences with unrestricted access to Bowie’s personal archives.”

A press release for the film provides the following description, “The film features George’s incredible, unseen archival and private home footage, giving viewers a first-person account of this dramatic period in his life, revealing how he became one of the most influential recording artists of all time, who alone fought a corner for all artists by challenging the standard recording contract helping to rewrite the rules of the music industry. He talks about why he stepped out of the lime light and turned his back on celebrity. ”

The film focuses on a difficult but poignant time in Michael’s life and career and charts the period after the release of his debut album Faith. The documentary pays special attention to the making and release of the singer’s 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1, the infamous court battle with his record label which followed the release is also fully documented.

The singer’s personal life is fundamentally an important element in the film, George Michael Freedom Uncut shows the painful journey the singer endured following the passing of his first love Anselmo Feleppa. The two met at the Rock in Rio concert and became a couple in 1992, Feleppa tragically lost his life in 1993 due to an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage. The film shows the singer’s bravery in the face of tragedy when he must endure sadness again with the passing of his mother.

The main theme seen throughout the documentary is Michael’s meteoric rise to the important cultural figure he became. Featured within the documentary is the artist’s most beloved music video and single “Freedom! 90”, all supermodels which were famously featured in the video appear in the documentary to discuss the production’s making. Released in 1990, the video became a worldwide hit and marked the birth of a new generation within culture and the music industry. The video was directed by Oscar Nominated and Grammy award-winning David Fincher, the director best known for his work with pop music’s most successful artists.

The film’s co-director and producer David Austin has given a statement concerning the release, “The film is George’s final work. Narrated by George himself, it is the complete story. George Michael was an inspiring artist whose story deserves to be shared on the big screen globally.” Sony Music Entertainment’s President of Premium Content Tom Mackay has also supplied a statement “In honor of George’s birthday this June, we are thrilled to be working with David Austin and our partners at Trafalgar Releasing to bring fans unprecedented access to his extraordinary life both on and off stage.”

Along with exclusive and never before seen footage, the documentary will also feature interviews with some of Michael’s most beloved duet partners and musical friends including Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, comedian Ricky Gervais, Tracey Emin, Mary J. Blige, Tony Bennett and Nile Rodgers.

A new film series will be released this Summer in celebration of The Rolling Stones and their enduring legacy. My Life As A Rolling Stone will be broadcasted by the BBC. The four-part series will chronicle the rise and influence of The Rolling Stones, and each one-hour episode will focus on an individual band member to share their musical journey and those who inspired their work. The present-day lineup consisting of Sir Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts will be the subjects of the documentary.

A press release for the forthcoming series has provided the following statement, “It tells the story of one of the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands in a way that has never been done before – by viewing the band through the musical lens of each member, delving deep into their personalities, passions and memories from the past sixty years. Four hour-long films, each an intimate portrait of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts, show how these individual musical geniuses came together to make the music that has provided the soundtrack to the lives of millions.”

The landmark series will join the many forms of media which have been released in celebration of the band’s 60th anniversary, and will also pay tribute to Watts, who tragically passed away last year. Joyce Smyth, manager of The Rolling Stones, has spoken about the film series, “We are thrilled to celebrate sixty years of The Rolling Stones with these four films which give fans around the world a new and fascinating look at the band.”

The four-episode long celebration of the “Paint It Black” hitmakers will also include appearances from other musicians, the special guests will contribute commentaries and stories to the informative segments. The star-studded guest list includes P.P. Arnold, Guns ‘N’ Roses’ rocker Slash, Sir Rod Stewart, legendary singer Tina Turner, Chrissie Hyde and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.

The hotly anticipated series has been created by two award-winning filmmakers, Oliver Murray and Clare Tavernor. Murray is known for his music-themed productions and has already released a tribute to an iconic musician; the British artist wrote and directed the 2020 documentary Ronnie’s. The feature tells the story of the legendary saxophonist and the genesis of his iconic London jazz venue, Ronnie Scotts.

The global production team Mercury Studios have produced the series, CEO Alice Webb has supplied the following statement concerning the upcoming series, “Every now and again, as filmmakers we get to work on extraordinary projects – this is one of those moments. We know their music, their swagger, their unrivalled stage presence – and through these beautiful, intimate films you’ll see the band in all their glory as we explore what makes them truly great. It’s been an honour to work with The Rolling Stones to shine a light on their incredible lives and careers – we can’t wait for audiences around the world to see them.”

The four-part film series will be made available on BBC 2 and BBC iPlayer, and more details concerning the release are yet to be announced.

The upcoming film was directed by BJ McDonnell and stars Foo Fighters’ band members Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jafee. McDonnell has prior experience working with rock bands, having directed multiple music videos for the heavy metal band Slayer, and is also known for his work on the 2013 horror film Hatchet III. The forthcoming musical horror film’s cast also features Whitney Cummings, Will Forte, Jenna Ortega, Jeff Garlin and American Horror Story star Leslie Grossman.

The plot centres around the band’s efforts to record their hotly anticipated tenth studio album, which entails them moving into an Encino mansion to produce their record. The house proves to be overrun with history, both gruesome and musical. The recording space turns into a haunted mansion and supernatural forces take it upon themselves to disrupt the band’s work. A trailer has been released ahead of the movie’s general release.

Speaking on Studio 666, Grohl has given the following statement expressing his passion for the project, “Yep…we actually went and made a big, loud, bloody horror movie. Because…why the hell not?” After keeping Studio 666 our dirty little secret for years, we’re so fucking excited to bring it to you guys for a full-on theatrical release. This thing was MEANT for the big screen. We hope you have as much fun watching it as we did making it.”

Director McDonnell has also spoken on the upcoming feature, “STUDIO 666 is a perfect combination of all things I love. Rock, horror, and comedy all tied together in a very thrilling motion picture. I am so excited to have teamed up with the Foo Fighters to create an old school “Band” movie. It’s been years since we’ve seen something like the Beatles “Help!”, The Monkees “Head”, or “KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park”. Take that 60’s / 70’s old school band film fun, mix it with horror and STUDIO 666 is born! I am so ecstatic for audiences of film and music to come together and enjoy our film.”

Studio 666 is not Grohl’s first forayer into film; the founding member and frontman released What Drives Us in 2021. The documentary aims to explore the lives of musicians on the road and the van life in which these artists experience, the feature was the second documentary released in 2021 to be directed by the grunge icon. Grohl also directed and starred in a six-part docu-series entitled From Cradle to Stage, which explored the relationships between artists and their mothers and the influence which the maternal bond held within their lives and art. The series also featured Pharrell Williams, Miranda Lambert and Rage Against the Machine member Tom Morello.

Tickets are on sale now for Studio 666, click here to purchase tickets and see the schedule for your local cinema.

Teaming up with Carribean rum brand Duppy Share, Kano has unveiled a short film titled A Blessed Place. Directed by Aneil Karia, the short film explores the UK rappers Jamaican heritage. The film is part of the rum brands endeavors to create their new rum, Duppy White, with the help of Kano as the brands figurehead. Both the film and the rum are inspired by the hybridity of the two cultures, and praising Jamaica’s international cultural influence. Watch the video below:

It meanders through his experiences on the island while also shedding light onto its culture and people, interspersed with shots of people rolling dice, smoking and chilling, and establishing shots of the famous blue mountains. Avoiding harmful and lazy stereotypes of the island and its people, the film depicts the minutiae of daily life in Jamaica in an authentic, grounded manner.

With music as the films thematic centre, the latter half features Kano spending time in a record shop, singing in a familiar patois. After spinning a record and exchanging a few lyrics with the shopkeeper, the film cuts to a nightime shot, where the soundsystems roll out alongside the bag. Liquor gets spilt, spliffs get sparked, and Kano and Duppy Share’s brand new Duppy White rum get advertised in the dance.

The film is artfully shot and edited, with juxtaposition stylistically used to protray the islands multiplicity; the hustle-and-bustle of the daytime markets cuts to the high-energy rum-fuelled night club, then to a serene morning scene. The opening few minutes rapidly cut between the busy scenes in the street to the tranquil vibes further up the mountains, with Kano himself saying “feel like this today, feel like this tomorrow.” Despite the islands size, there is simply too much to portray in one ten minute film.

Speaking of the island’s impact, Kano says this toward the end of the film: “Jamaica must be like the smallest place with the hugest impact. They influence pop culture globally and we see that in the music, fashion, carnival, the way people speak, all come from Jamaica, and thats what I love about Jamaica: They will never lose their identity”

“Whatever I do it has to be done with heart, with truth, and integrity, and its only right that if I’m gonna create a rum, I come to Jamaica I get the stamp of approval from the people.”

South London singer-songwriter Arlo Parks has been busy this year. She has released three powerful singles: Eugene, Black Dog and Hurt, as well as a cover of Radiohead’s Creep. In addition to this, she has appeared on countless platforms such as COLORSXSTUDIOS, BBC Live Lounge and most recently a Channel 4 special for World Mental Health Day.

Park’s spoken words are as eloquent as her song-lyrics. At only the age of twenty, she is incredibly self-aware about her mental health and the creative process. Talking to Jordan Stephens of Rizzle Kicks, she articulately discusses the dissonance between the way one sees oneself vs. the way the world sees you: ‘things can be going incredibly in terms of your career… but the internal landscape is so detached from the success around you’.

The Everyman’s annual Music Film Festival is a way of celebrating the ‘crossover and creativity between the fields of music and film’. It has been running for six years now, and in the past has involved Q&A’s, live music and film screenings of films such as Amazing Grace and Teen Spirit. This year, alongside Parks, there will be a feature of Nick Cave playing his songs alone at Alexandra Palace; as well as an exclusive screening of Billie Holiday tapes and interviews.

Park’s session is set to feature ‘a selection of music videos’ which will then presumably be discussed in the Q&A. She is a well chosen candidate for this conversation, given the artful nature of her music videos. The video for Eugene, directed by Loyle Carner and his brother, was an evocative accompaniment to the track. The birds-eye view of Parks and her best friend lounging about in a bedroom gives the viewer the sense of observing perfectly undisturbed and intimate moments.

This connection between film and music, of how the two can enhance and affect each other, is an interesting topic of conversation.
Welsh singer, Duffy has spoken out in an open letter to the chief of Netflix Reed Hastings regarding the film 365 Days. Duffy has accused Netflix of glamourising rape and sex trafficking by screening the hit Polish film.

In her letter she said: “It grieves me that Netflix provides a platform for such ‘cinema’, that eroticises kidnapping and distorts sexual violence and trafficking as a ‘sexy’ movie. I just can’t imagine how Netflix could overlook how careless, insensitive, and dangerous this is.” She added that the film “glamorises the brutal reality of sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape.”

She concluded the letter by providing resources and saying; “You have not realized how 365 Days has brought great hurt to those who have endured the pains and horrors that this film glamorises, for entertainment and for dollars. What I and others who know these injustices need is the exact opposite – a narrative of truth, hope, and to be given a voice.”

Duffy has previously spoken out about her own experiences in February of this year. She was allegedly kidnapped and brought to another country where she was allegedly held captive for multiple days and repeatedly drugged and raped. In a now deleted Instagram post, she explained her story and talked about the music she would be releasing about her experience. In the post, she said; “The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”

The film, which was adapted from a book by Blanka Lipińska, has become a Top 10 hit on Netflix. It follows the story of a woman who is kidnapped and is told by her captor that he will keep her captive for a full year, and in that time, she has to fall in love with him and she will have a life of luxury with him. It is classes as an “erotic romantic drama” being compared to the popular Fifty Shades of Grey series.

Netflix did not produce the film, but picked it up in June after it ran in cinemas around Europe earlier in the year. While they have not commented on Duffy’s letter, they have said that there are warnings on the film to warn viewers. A spokesperson for the streaming service has said; “We believe strongly in giving our members around the world more choice and control over their Netflix viewing experience.”

Duffy shared organisations that need recognition, especially as World Day Against Trafficking in Persons approaches on the 30th of July. They are as follows; catwinternational.org, hopeforjustice.org, polarisproject.org, antislavery.org, stopthetraffik.org, unseenuk.org, notforsalecampaign.org, ijm.org, a21.org and madeforthem.org.
