Wide Awake’s organiser Marcus Weedon has provided the following statement expressing his excitement for the event. “We’re incredibly excited to finally be able to bring this very special show to London this September, It’s been a tough year for everyone, not least the festival and event industry, and we have been working very hard to ensure Wide Awake is brilliantly curated with the safety of everyone at the forefront. We cannot wait to open our gates and welcome both fans and artists in what is going to be an incredibly special event this year.”

The one-day musical event will be held at London’s Brockwell park and will be making its debut run this year. The festival is the mastermind of the co-founders behind Field Day, the new festival was originally meant to take place last year but due to the COVID-19 restrictions still in place, the event was pushed back until this year. The festival can take place this year due to the announcement from the UK government confirming that social restrictions are aimed to be lifted by 21st June 2021, although the restrictions were lifted the roadmap implemented depends on the success of the vaccination process.

A statement on the festival’s website describes the event further and what ticket-holders can expect in September. “Bringing together notes from the underground, Wide Awake, is a festival for music fans looking for something different. Expect leftfield Indie, Post Punk, Electronica, Techno, Jazz and more from an array of artists you won’t find anywhere else at a festival in London. The 2021 show features the likes of black midi, Tinariwen, Dream Wife, Tropical Fuck Storm and Songhoy Blues, as well as electronic curation from Daniel Avery and many more. See full line-up here. Wide Awake grew out of Test Pressing Festival and is brought to you by Bad Vibrations, LNZRT and SC&P, some of the original Field Day and Dimensions festivals founders and the people behind MOTH Club, The Shacklewell Arms, The Waiting Room and Peckham Audio, Wide Awake’s a party for people who care… about music and more.”

A press release about the new event states the new event’s environmentally conscious standing and confirms the measures put in place at the London festival to enforce the eco-focused rules.

“Wide Awake has already committed to bury zero waste in the landfill sites and leave no trace of litter. They have banned single-use plastic, will only allow compostable packaging and cutlery onsite, all traders and back of house waste will be recycled and the stage effects will be biodegradable. This is just the beginning of the process and over the next three years, Wide Awake will be making more and more changes.”

The line-up includes the following acts, A Certain Ratio, Black Country, New Road, black midi, C.A.R. DJ, Crack Cloud, Crows, Daniel Avery, Dar Disku, DEBONAIR, Dr Rubinstein, Dream Wife, ELLES, Erol Alkan, Fall Forward, Faux Real, Fenne Lilly, Goal Girl, Grainer, Harry James, Ivan Smagghe, Kikagaku Moyo, KOKOROKO, Lazarus Kane, Lena Willikens, Los Bi7chos, Lynks, Mandy, Indiana, Mandrake Handshake, Manfredas, Marcus Harris, Maripool, The Mauskovic Dance Band, Mera Bhai DJ, Minimal Violence, MLE, Mondowski, Moscoman, The Murder Capital, Porridge Radio, Pozi, Proteus, PVA, Regressive Left, SCALPING, Scott Fraser, Self Esteem, Shame, SLIFT, Souvenir, Squid, Tia Cousins, Tina, Yard Act and White Flowers.

In May it was announced that a one-off event was being planned to replace the annual 5-day festival which Glastonbury normally held. The replacement event was due to take place in September of this year but was unfortunately terminated.
The September live music event was to be organised to replace the last two cancellations of the Festival due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions enforced due to the current health crisis. The September concert was to be called Equinox, the event organisers had a lot of ‘red tape’ to go through and eventually secured the necessary licenses and permissions from Mendip District Council to allow for 50,000 ticket holders to attend the autumn event. The event appeared to be approved albeit with over 50 conditions and provisions, the festival’s organisers and the team have not yet provided further details on the cancellation. The Instagram post from Emily Eavis is the main cancellation confirmation at this time.

This is not the first cancellation in which Glastonbury has issued, the cancellation of the rescheduled 2020 festival was announced by the Eavis’ in January. The announcement confirmed the event would not be going ahead and gave information on how ticket holders could attend next year’s event. The Festival released the following statement via their Twitter page. “With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will be another enforced fallow year for us. In spite of our efforts to move heaven & earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the festival happen this year. We are so sorry to let you all down. As with last year, we would like to offer all those who secured a ticket in October 2019 the opportunity to roll their £50 deposit over to next year, and guarantee the chance to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2022. We are very appreciative of the faith and trust placed in us by those of you with deposits, and we are very confident we can deliver something really special for us all in 2022! We thank you for the incredible continued support and let’s look forward to better times ahead. With love, Michael & Emily.”

The 2020 event would have been the 50th birthday of Glastonbury, both organisers were not deturbed in their celebrations however and wanted to still proceed with an anniversary event. Michael Eavis was keen to hold the event this autumn to match the Festival’s birthdate of its first event on 18th September 1970, Eavis previously confirmed his hopeful plans for the eventually cancelled event. “I would like to do something in September. I would like to do something smaller somewhere around the anniversary date of when we started, which was the 18th of September 1970. I would like to consider possibly doing something around that time.” Eavis was then asked if he would recruit big acts to perform, to which he replied. “Yes, but I do need to get reassurance from the ethics people.”

Glastonbury is one of the most iconic institutions in music history, the festival has been leading the way in live entertainment and legendary live performances for over half a century. It is no surprise that the festival’s founder Eavis wanted to celebrate its 50th birthday with a bang.
The festival has seen line-up’s full of rock, soul, folk and pop performers, known for its inclusivity the festival has catered for every niche market and genre throughout the decades. The festival’s first event was held the day after Jimi Hendrix’s tragic death, some may think that it was this tragedy that inspired Eavis to launch the new festival, but his inspiration came from a Blues Festival held at the Bath and West Showground. The initial event’s attendance is not even half of the 250,000 attendees at 2019’s event, in 1970 the attendance was 1,500 ticket-holders who paid £1 to attend the festival. Along with the attendance at the festival, the £1 ticket also entitled the holder to free milk from the farm. Considering that the concert was the festival’s first event the line-up was an impressive who’s who of the era’s popular music, the line-up included T-Rex frontman Marc Bolan, Stackrudge, Quintessence, Keith Christmas and Scottish folk musician Al Stewart.

Whilst the festival’s annual Glastonbury event and proposed September concert are no longer going ahead, music and culture fans will still be able to have a Glastonbury-like experience. During the cancellations of the farm’s events, Michael and Emily Eavis have concentrated on another side of their business. The duo has opened up the famed event location, Worthy Farm, as a campsite open to the public. The new business venture is called Worthy Pastures and allows visitors to connect with one of music’s most iconic venue locations. Entertainment and activities provided to guests include the Pyramid Field, a SUNDAY Craft Market, Walking Routes, Cycling Paths, Table Tennis and the stone circle.

The event will return this year after its year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions; the annual festival will take place on 22nd July and will run until 25th July 2021. Albarn will join the ranks of an impressive line-up to perform at the festival’s triumphant return. The ‘Parklife’ singer will perform on the lakeside Waterfront stage at the event’s venue at Henham Park located in Suffolk East England. The artist will have a great opportunity to play his new material from his upcoming release. Albarn’s second solo studio album entitled ‘The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows’ is set to be released in the winter of this year, 12th November 2021.

Albarn is set to perform during the evening on 24th July 2021 and is billed within the line-up as the ‘Saturday Sunset Guest on the Waterfront’. The festival’s website has published the following statement concerning the event’s new act, within the statement, the festival announces the news whilst describing Albarn’s influential status within the music industry. “We are delighted to reveal that music royalty Damon Albarn will be performing at cinch presents Latitude this summer! The Blur and Gorillaz icon is joining us for a very special Saturday sunset performance. Damon will be performing songs from his extensive back catalogue on our stunning lakeside Waterfront stage.”

Latitude festival announced only last month that the event would be going ahead this year, those in charge confirmed that the festival would be at full capacity during July. The event has been following the Government scheme, Event Research Programme (ERP) to reopen its gates this year. This is a new programme set up to enforce people’s safety within events amongst the COID-19 pandemic, even as the restrictions are removed. The programme examines risks that may lead to exposure to the virus and put into place procedures and structures to limit said risk. The festival is able to run this year due to the series of test events organised by the scheme, as well as the Prime Minister’s announcement stating that legal restrictions will be lifted on 19th July 2021. The test events held gave practical and hopeful results to the Event Research Programme. It was reported out of those who attended the pilot events, 28 attendees tested positive for COVID-19.

The Festival director, Melvin Benn, provided the following statement published on the festival’s webpage “We have been working extremely hard to make sure that Latitude Festival can go ahead safely at full capacity. After much discussion with the Government, I can now officially announce that we WILL be going ahead and that we will be joining the 3rd phase of the Event Research Programme as a test event! Becoming an ERP event gives us the security of going ahead. Crucially the additional research collected at Latitude will benefit all festivals and live events moving forward. After many months without live music and arts, we are ecstatic to return with a full capacity festival. Restarting festivals is crucially important to the wellbeing of everyone in society and we hope that Latitude will be the first of many festivals to take place this summer!”

Benn continues to describe the precautions taken by the event’s team and the requirements of those who attend. “We are working closely with the ERP experts, scientists and in particular the director of Public Health in Suffolk on the specific conditions of entry that will enable the festival to operate safely and we will publish those details on our website as soon as they are ready to share. One thing we do know is that everyone will be welcome to attend as long as they have a negative lateral flow test OR proof of two vaccinations. We will continue to keep you updated as soon as we have more information”

The festival’s return will also see British alt-rockers Wolf Alice take headliner stage on Friday 23rd along with various stages boasting strong line-ups throughout the event. Albarn will not be the only iconic artist to perform, English electro heroes The Chemical Brothers will headline on Saturday 24th July as well as indie legends Supergrass, billed as Saturday Lunchtime Guest. Other acts joining Albarn at the event’s return include Bastille, Rudimental, Kaiser Chiefs, 80s singer Rick Astley and Hot Chip. Also included with the musical acts is actor and comedian Bill Bailey, billed as a special Sunday Afternoon guest.

The festival was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has changed promoters since allegations of staff mistreatment. The festival was previously promoted by SSD Concerts who were involved in the claims made public on the company review site Glassdoor after their Instagram account was allegedly hacked, the claims stated that SSD Concerts were underpaying staff and making employees feel uncomfortable at their workplace. The festival is now promoted by one of the largest event promoters within the UK, Kilimanjaro Live.

CEO of Kilimanjaro Live, Stuart Galbraith had this to say about the return of This is Tomorrow.

“The pandemic has caused huge challenges for the live industry in 2020 and 2021 and when the opportunity came up for us to get involved with This Is Tomorrow it was a complete no brainer and a very easy decision for us to make, It’s a brilliant festival with huge potential in an area which has been traditionally over-looked as a music market. We’re delighted to be able to get this back in the diary and hope to see everyone in September for what promises to be one hell of a party.’’

The festival will also be putting on a free festival for NHS key workers as a thank you for their hard work throughout the COVID pandemic. The free festival will take place on the bank holiday Monday May 31st 2021 and will be held in Exhibition Park, headliners include Sam Fender, Gerry Cinnamon and celebrated British rockers Royal Blood. The one-off event will raise money for Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust, Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Tickets are now on sale for This Is Tomorrow as well as their This Is For The NHS event.

The venue behind these events is teeming with historical notoriety after famed performances throughout the 70s to the 90s from the likes of The Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Gil Scot Heron and Pink Floyd. The open-air amphitheatre venue was a pioneer in the one-day festival format, hosting numerous garden parties until it fell dormant, hosting its final big gig in 2005 with headliners Coldplay. The last few years have been that of no concerts for the famous venue until the announcement of South Facing Festival, the result of crowdfunding for a new stage which is set to bring new life to the heritage site. You can purchase tickets for Cross The Tracks and other concerts in partnership with South Facing on their website.

The music and food festival, sponsored by British food conglomerate M&S, had been postponed due to COVID last year but will return for this year’s August Bank Holiday weekend. The three-day event will now take place on 27th August 2021 until 29th August 2021. The event, which is held at James’ picturesque farm located in the Cotswolds has announced three more acts to join the already impressive line-up. The three new additions, Maisie Peters, Tom Grennan and ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ singer, Sophie Ellis Bextor, and will be joined by the existing line-up. Acts that are returning this August Bank Holiday include Rag’n’Bone Man, Zara Larsson, Sigala, Ella Eyre, All Saints, Morcheeba, Norman Jay, Reef, The Cuban Brothers, Tom Walker, Max and Harvey and disco legends Nile Rodgers and Chic.

James gave a statement expressing his joy concerning the festival going ahead this year, “I cannot wait to welcome everyone back to the farm this summer for our 10th Birthday party. We’re all in need of a serious celebration this year so we’re pulling out all the stops to ensure this is our best line-up yet. Roll on August!”

Also joining the line-up is the unlikely couple, rapper Professor Green and celebrity chef Gizzi Erskine.Erskine, who came into focus with her appearances on shows such as Cook Yourself Thin, teamed up with Professor Green last year to create their online series ‘Monday Night Fakeaways’. The series became so popular that the two launched a pop-up restaurant in London, and now the duo will bring their show Giz ‘n’ Greens and culinary expertise to this year’s festival. Joining them in the food component of the event includes, Romy Gill, Steven Lamb, James Knappett and Matt Tebbutt, the presenter of the BBC show ‘Saturday Kitchen’.

The first music and food festival which the 52-year-old musician held at his farm was titled ‘Alex James Presents Harvest’ and took place in September 2011. However, the festival was not successful after the promoters, Big Wheel Promotions went bankrupt and left vendors and ticket companies unpaid. In 2012 James, along with friend and famous chef Jamie Oliver, started The Big Feastival and from then on the celebration of food and music has been an event to which many look forward to each year. The festival’s first year included performers such as Paloma Faith, Noisettes and English Indie rockers Razorlight.

Along with the exciting line up of artists and food exhibitions, ticket goers will also get a chance to see James perform in his own band, Alex James Orchestra. With an amazing line up of artists and an impressive array of culinary entertainment, the event has something for everyone and will surely be an amazing experience.

Becky Hill, Eve, Jimmy Somerville, Gabrielle and Atomic Kitten will also be performing upon one of the festivals 7 stages. Smaller acts include Savage Disco, Absolute., Kiddy Smile and many many more (even a guest appearance from Katie Price!). The Mighty Hoopla have stated ‘This year Mighty Hoopla promises to be bigger and better; the sixth special shindig of all things pop and sparky.

The legendary Never Say Die! festival has been confirmed for 2021 with five exclusive UK dates announced for November next year. Organised in association with the well established metal promoter Avocado Bookings, the festival traditionally brings the best names in the metalcore, deathcore and hardcore scene ever since its inception in 2008. For 2021, headliners are the rising Australian metalcore stars Polaris, with main support from Emmure and Currents, alongside Spite, Invent Animate, Gravemind and Stepson.

The UK part of the tour starts on 9 November at Camden’s Electric Ballroom in London, followed by four consecutive days at Club Academy (Manchester), The Mill (Birmingham), Garage (Glasgow) and SWX (Bristol). Tickets for the London show go on sale next Monday 16 November while the rest of the UK dates are already available to pre-order here, with tickets for all starting from as little as £22.

Originally established in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxemburg in 2008, the Never Say Day! Festival quickly expanded to cover most of Central Europe, and has included the UK since its 2011 edition. The event has become a fundamental part of the contemporary metal scene in Europe, and a pilgrimage for metalcore and hardcore fans wordlwide, bringing established acts and raw talent from across the globe. Previous editions of the fest have seen iconic performances by Parkway Drive, Architects, Stick To Your Guns, Whitechapel, Bleeding Through, Suicide Silence, Comeback Kid, We Came As Romans and many more.

There is no official trailer for the 2021 Never Say Die! tour yet, but the below teaser of the memorable 2015 edition shows the absolute mayhem during the live shows, and highlights testimonials from some of the leading names in the genre:

“Never Say Die! was one of my first big tours in Europe and it is still easily one of my favourite” – Sam Carter (Architects)
“From humble beginnings it has become the one tour you can guarantee to have the best line ups and the craziest shows” – Winston McCall (Parkway Drive)
“Being able the headline the Never Say Die! tour has been a staple in our band’s career” – Frankie Palmeri (Emmure)
“The tour offers a unique, diverse selection of awesome music every year, something offered by no other tour” – Josh Smith (Northlane)
“Killer Shows, beautiful cities and tons of bands…not much more you could ask for” – Josh James (Stick To Your Guns)

With just two studio albums in their discography, Polaris have immediately grabbed the metal world’s attention as the next Australian band to drive contemporary metalcore forward, and have jumped from a support act on the fest three years ago to leading its monumental 2021 lineup. Emmure hardly need introduction after eight records of blending extreme deathcore, alternative nu metal and controversial lyrics, and returning to the tour again after headlining in the past (ironically, supported by Polaris). Fellow Connecticut heavyweighs Currents join as support act, fresh of the release of their second album The Way It Ends and set to deliver their celebrated ruthless and innovative take on the genre.

The impressive line-up also includes California deathcore quintet SPITE, Texas metalcore outfit Invent Animate, Melbourne’s favourite Gravemind and Bribane’s hardcore heroes Stepson. The 7 bands join forces for 22 shows across 9 countries in just one month, promising yet another iconic year for the Never Say Die! fest, especially after the cancellation of the 2020 edition. As said in the official announcement, all we have to do now is “be good to each other, take care of each other, protect each other, don’t get sucked in by the hate and we’ll see you in the pit next year!”

The list of all UK dates from Never Say Die! 2021 Festival can be seen below:

Reading and Leeds festival organisers have received massive online backlash after revealing their 2021 line up, the headliners of which are all male. Fans have expressed particularly deep disappointment as this is not the first time the dual-running festivals have failed to book top female artists.

Topping the 2021 bill are Stormzy, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Post Malone, Disclosure, Liam Gallagher, and Queens of the Stone Age. The majority of the other acts are also men, including Lewis Capaldi, Two Door Cinema Club, AJ Tracey, and DaBaby. Female acts include Doja Cat, Madison Beer, and Beabadoobee, but online commenters say that these should have been headliners, and that far more women musicians could have been booked. One widely-shared tweet lists a range of popular female artists, such as Lizzo and Dua Lipa, who many feel deserved headliner spots.

Since each of next year’s festivals will boast two main stages instead of one, critics argue that their organisers have missed an opportunity to make the events more inclusive and diverse. While some fans simply expressed their dismay, others were angered by the news; one Twitter user calling the line up a ‘display of misogyny’.

As mentioned, Reading and Leeds have been criticised in the past for their male-heavy line ups. In 2015, a photoshopped image of the festival’s poster, which erased all the male acts and left in only the female, went viral. The edited poster highlighted the fact that, among nearly 100 performers, only nine were female, and none of them were headliners. Josh Dalton, who created the image, said: ‘I have a 16-year-old sister who is at the age I was when I started attending festivals. The idea that she could attend the event and quite feasibly not see a single female performer doesn’t quite sit right with me’.

#RANDL21 is going to be BIGGER and BETTER than ever Here are your SIX HEADLINERS across TWO main stages NO MAIN STAGE CLASHES General on sale Thursday 3rd September at 9:00am Reading : https://t.co/2JiEh36rfi Leeds: https://t.co/iG8BIzlOxD pic.twitter.com/n5yeQVvPY8 — Reading & Leeds Fest (@OfficialRandL) August 31, 2020

The festivals also have a history of not putting female-fronted bands on their main stages; in 2014, Paramore became the only such band to headline Reading in over 20 years. More recently, analysis of the 2019 Reading and Leeds line up showed that only 12% of the acts were female performers or female-fronted groups.

In 2018, organisers of 45 UK festivals joined an initiative to get a 50/50 gender split in their line ups by 2020, but Reading and Leeds boss Melvin Benn decided not to participate in the scheme. He remarked: ‘Is that the right way to go about it – to say it’s got to be 50/50? I don’t know that it is’. He instead launched his own campaign called ReBalance, which aims to give 36 female artists one week of studio recording time over the next three years. Benn said this would ‘create a bigger pool of female acts’, thus giving festivals ‘greater choice’ when booking performers.

Despite the recent controversy, Reading and Leeds have promised to make their 2021 festivals ‘the most epic’ yet, with over 200,000 fans expected to be attending. Organisers have also been working on a rigorous coronavirus testing regime, which they say will be ready by next year. Amid the current uncertainty in the live music industry, Melvin Benn has stated that he is ‘very confident’ that the 2021 festival season will go ahead as planned.

The fesitval is organised annually by independant label Slam Dunk Records. The idea was first born around the ‘Slam Dunk’ weekly event at Leeds’ Cockpit music venue (now operating as The Key Club) with the sole goal to “change the UK pop-punk scene forever“, and quickly transformed into one of the main annual events for punk and metal lovers. Ogirinally only held in Leeds, since 2010 the festival has turned into a two-day event with additional day added closer to London in response to growing popularity and demand.

Since most major events for this summer got cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 situations, festival organisers and promoters got busy with planning their schedule for 2021 and Slam Dunk is one of the latest to be finalised for next year. Assuming everything goes to plan and no external factors interfere, next summer is looking like one to remember. All everyone needs to do is keep a safe distance, wash their hands regularly and wear a mask so we can all go back to the live events we have missed for so long now.
