This announcement marks the first full line-up unveiled for any of this year’s BST headliners, with Stevie Wonder’s show currently the only complete bill confirmed.

Joining as special guests are Ezra Collective, the 2023 Mercury Prize winner’s and genre-blending jazz quintet from London. Known for their energetic fusion of afrobeat, calypso, hip-hop, reggae, soul, and jazz, the group has pushed boundaries and made waves in the UK music scene. In 2025, they made history as the first jazz act to win Group of the Year at the BRIT Awards.

Also performing is Corinne Bailey Rae, the acclaimed singer-songwriter behind the soulful classic “Put Your Records On”. Her 2006 debut album topped the UK charts, making her the fourth British female solo artist to debut at number one. Her work was recognised with a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2008.

Elmiene, the rising 23-year-old British-Sudanese neo-soul and R&B singer, is also on the bill. Since emerging in 2023, Elmiene has received widespread praise and has been hailed by Sir Elton John as “one of Britain’s greatest new artists.” He was nominated for the Rising Star award at the 2025 BRIT Awards.

Rounding out the support line-up are Thee Sacred Souls, a soul trio from San Diego whose nostalgic yet fresh sound has earned them international acclaim. Their self-titled 2022 debut was met with universal acclaim, and they followed it up with 2024’s Got a Story to Tell. The band describes their style as “Sweet Southern Californian soul”- they are carving out their own path while honouring soul’s legacy and heritage.

This will be Stevie Wonder’s third time headlining the Great Oak Stage at BST Hyde Park, following standout performances in 2016 and 2019.

Stevie Wonder’s performance on July 12 also marks the final date of his upcoming ‘Love, Light and Song’ UK tour. The tour kicks off on July 3 at Lytham festival and is followed by performances in Manchester’s Co-op Live arena on July 5, Birmingham’s Utilita Arena on July 7 and Cardiff’s Blackweir Feilds on July 9. Other acts set to headline BST Hyde Park 2025 include Olivia Rodrigo (June 27), Zack Bryan (June 28-29), Noah Kahan (July 4), Sabrina Carpenter (July 5-6), Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts (July 11) and Jeff Lynne’s ELO (July 13). Tickets for BST Hyde Park can be accessed here.

Through their ‘Ezra Collective Future Foundation’, the celebrated jazz group will offer five young black women the opportunity to “learn, grow and gain real industry experience with our behind the scenes team in May 2025.”

Speaking on the foundations website, the band stated the importance of increasing representation within the music industry, saying: “Young black women are totally under-represented in the majority of behind the scenes music roles.

“A key issue is, in never seeing someone who looks or sounds like you, someone who has walked a similar path in life – a lot of young women instantly eliminate these career options as a possibility for themselves.

“Through the work of the Ezra Collective Foundation, we look to break that cycle, and help develop a new generation and community of empowered and experienced young black women.”

Multiple reports and studies support the view that there is a severe lack of racial representation within the music industry, both in entry-level positions and executive roles.

The 2022 UK Music Diversity Report found that there had been a ‘decrease in diverse ethnicity employees in entry-level positions’, falling from 34.6% in 2020 to 23.6% in 2022. 

It has also been proven to be a problem across the pond, as The University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that among 4,060 executives across 119 companies, white male executives outnumbered black women by 17.7 to one.

Dr Stacy L Smith, author of the Annenberg report, said: “Under-represented and black artists are dominating the charts, but the C-suite (executive level) is a ‘diversity desert.”

She continued: “The profile of top artists may give some in the industry the illusion that music is an inclusive business, but the numbers at the top tell a different story.”

Through this latest initiative, Ezra Collective aim to tackle this problem and “sidestep the assumption that in order to even get a first foot in the door, you need to have endless experience, contacts, training and/or a degree.”

They are offering opportunities in numerous roles including artist management, tour and production management, front of house/live sound, band leadership and backline technician.

The jazz quintet are one of the most exciting and fastest rising acts in British music today. They recently had the honour of closing the 2025 Brit Awards alongside Jorja Smith, after winning the award for ‘Group of The Year’ earlier in the night. This year’s lineup was announced at the start of February, revealing a small but heavy-hitting lineup. The headline acts had two Mercury Prize winners among them in Ezra Collective and English Teacher. Discussing their appearance, Ezra Collective called it a “deep honour” to be headlining, recalling the importance of first being aired on Radio 6 in 2013.   

Another act that caused a stir online is Kae Tempest. They took to their Instagram page last week to announce some warmup shows before their set at the festival. Fans attending their show will be hopeful to hear some new material, with Tempest saying ​​“What you doing end of March? I’m putting a new live set together, and we’re playing a couple of small venues to kick things off… can’t wait to get back to it – get your tickets while you can – will be very special”.

The full schedule includes BBC Introducing at YES on Wednesday, featuring Adult DVD, Renee Stormz, and jasmine.4.t. Thursday sees Ezra Collective, Fat Dog, and Jamz Supernova at Victoria Warehouse, plus a New Music Fix Live at YES later that evening.

Mogwai and English Teacher will headline Friday night at Victoria Warehouse, with a DJ set from Tom Ravenscroft going late into the night. Amber’s Club will see a playful twist as a ‘phone-free’ night will be enforced for sets from Ayy Den, nora, Anish Kumar, and SBTRKT. Elsewhere, Band on the Wall will host the Radio 6 programme Indie Live Forever.

Saturday concludes the festival, starting with a ‘Morning After Mix’ at YES, hosted by Jamz Supernova and Emma-Jean Thackray. Kae Tempest, Perfume Genius, and DJ SHERELLE will close the event out at Victoria Warehouse.

BBC Radio 6 has shown their commitment to aiding grassroots venues, with their choices bringing more awareness to the glaring issues facing many spaces up and down the country. Indie Forever host, Nathan Shepard, said: “Venues like YES and Band on the Wall are integral to Manchester’s music scene for emerging and established artists and using them for the 6 Music Festival ensures they can continue to support the scene in the future by bringing in new artists and audiences.”

Reaction to the announced lineup was mixed. On the Radio 6 subreddit, one user compared it to feeling more like a “6 Music nights out”, criticising the scale of the event in light of apparent budget cuts. At its peak, the festival hosted 72 different events at the 2016 iteration. This year has just 27 acts.

The festival still has tickets available for anybody wanting to go, available through both the BBC’s website, and Ticketmaster, though Ticketmaster does indicate that ticket availability is limited. The events will also be available to everybody through iPlayer and BBC Sounds, as well as traditional broadcast mediums.

 Despite the disappointment around the size of the lineup, BBC Radio 6 Music Festival continues to celebrate and provide a platform to music from beyond the ordinary, and the variety on offer means there is an act for everybody.

The 45th Brit Awards unfolded tonight, March 1, at London’s O2 Arena, celebrating the pinnacle of musical talent from the past year. Hosted by Jack Whitehall for the fifth time, the ceremony was marked by standout performances and notable victories.

Charli XCX won Song of the Year for her collaboration with Billie Eilish on ‘Guess’. The singer was against The Beatles, Dua Lipa, Myles Smith, and JADE in this category. In her acceptance speech, she said: “Thank you, this is cool. I’m pretty happy that a song about underwear now has a Brit Award.”

The singer also won Best Album, Best Dance Act, Songwriter of the Year, and Artist of the Year, a total of five awards. JADE won Best Pop Act. Other nominees included Myles Smith and Lola Young. This marks JADE’s first solo Brit Award since Little Mix announced their hiatus in 2022. The singer also delivered a captivating performance of her debut solo single ‘Angel of My Dreams‘.

Sam Fender won Best Alternative/Rock Act against The Cure and also delivered a performance of his latest single ‘People Watching‘. The musician expressed his gratitude to his fans, acknowledging their pivotal role in his success. He further thanked his band, stating: “I want to say a huge thanks to my band, who without, I’m just a mad person shouting at walls.”

Chappell Roan won International Song of the Year for ‘Good Luck, Babe‘. The track entered the Official Singles Chart Top 40 in April 2024. It peaked and remained in the Top 10 for 16 weeks and was the eighth biggest single of 2024 in the UK. The singer also won International Artist of the Year. Stormzy won his fourth Brit Award for Best Rap/ Hip-Hop Act and RAYE secured her seventh Brit Award for Best R&B Act.

A heartfelt tribute was paid to Liam Payne, who tragically passed away in October 2024 at the age of 31. The ceremony featured a video montage celebrating Payne’s life and illustrious career, from his early days on The X Factor to his monumental success with One Direction and his subsequent solo endeavours. The montage included performances, childhood photos, and personal moments with his family, all set to the backdrop of One Direction’s ‘Little Things‘.

Scottish DJ and producer, Barry Can’t Swim, born Joshua Mainnie, has captivated audiences with his distinctive blend of jazz, house, and dance music. His musical journey began at age 10 when his grandfather gifted him a piano, sparking a passion that later led him to form bands influenced by acts like The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. 

Speaking to the BBC about his music inspiration, he said: “[those acts were] some of the first people to really try and create a hybrid of the music that I loved, which was 60s psychedelic rock with more modern electronic music. And that’s exactly what I was trying to do – incorporate the more traditional form of songwriting and melody of 60s music with electronic production.”

Finding inspiration in the club scene during his time at Edinburgh Napier University, he transitioned to electronic music, according to the BBC: “My earliest producing really came from clubbing, really, and going out and just falling in love with dance music that way.”

His 2023 debut album, ‘When Will We Land?’, showcases his signature style – a vibrant fusion of electronic, jazz, and world influences with dynamic layers and memorable vocal samples. The album’s success earned him multiple nominations including for the 2024 Mercury Prize and Best Dance Act at the 2024 Brit Awards and positioned him as a standout in the recent surge of dance music acts that has flooded charts. 

Meanwhile, Ezra Collective has claimed the runner-up spot, cementing their status as one of the most innovative voices in modern jazz.

The quintet met through a jazz youth program in London called Tomorrow’s Warriors and is comprised of drummer Femi Koleoso, bassist TJ Koleoso, keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, trumpeter Ife Ogunjobi, and tenor saxophonist James Mollison.Drawing from Afrobeat, Hip-Hop, Grime, Reggae, and R&B, Ezra Collective aims to make jazz more accessible and reflects the genre-defying approach to music present in the new generation of artists. 

Speaking to the BBC, drummer and bandleader Femi Koleoso explained: “We’re the shuffle generation. We listen to Beethoven and 50 Cent comes on straight after. That influences the way we approach music: We love jazz but at the same time I love salsa too, so why not try and get that in there?”

After their 2016 debut EP, ‘Chapter 7’, and 2019 debut album, ‘You Can’t Steal My Joy’,  the group were about to embark on a tour when the COVID-19 Pandemic disrupted their plans. Despite this, the group used the national lockdown as inspiration and began working towards their second album, ‘Where I’m Meant To Be’, centred around hope for a post-pandemic world. Koleoso recalled to the BBC: “What we found was we had each other. It felt like we were meant to be together, and we made as many tracks as we could that articulate that.”

The album has since gone on to make history as the first jazz act to win the Mercury Prize and was quickly followed by their third album. Innovatively, ‘Dance, No-One’s Watching’, was recorded live at Abbey Road Studios over three days, with an audience comprised of their family and friends.

Through tracks like ‘Ajala’, the project aims to capture the energy and excitement of performing to a live audience. Commenting to the BBC on the inclusion of the audience in the final record, Koleoso said: “There’s a lot of things in the world that don’t feel real enough, but music shouldn’t be one of them.”

The recognition of Barry Can’t Swim and Ezra Collective in the BBC’s Sound of 2025 celebrates the vibrant and genre-blurring creativity shaping modern music. Both acts exemplify the power of blending diverse influences to create something entirely unique.

The winner of the BBC Sound of 2025 will be revealed tomorrow, concluding this year’s celebration of groundbreaking talent.

The Song of the Year Award: Chase & Status, Stormzy ‘Backbone’

The song ‘Backbone’ is a collaboration between British rapper Stormzy and the acclaimed drum and bass duo Chase & Status. Released on August 8, 2024, it quickly became a massive hit, reaching the No. 1 spot on the UK charts. Stormzy is known for his influential role in UK grime, while Chase & Status, are celebrated for their contributions to drum and bass and UK dance music. Last year’s award went to PinkPantheress with ‘Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2’.

The Play Next Award: Brooke Combe

This category highlights groups and artists who have achieved success in 2024 and are expected to become bigger in the upcoming years, last year won by The Last Dinner Party. The nominees included Elmiene, Master Peace and Nia Smith. The winner, Brooke Combe, is a rising Scottish singer-songwriter  influenced by Motown, soul, and R&B who gained recognition through viral covers on social media, including ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’, which became an anthem for Scotland’s football team in 2021. Her soulful voice and retro influences have drawn comparisons to artists like Marvin Gaye and Baby Huey.

The Live Act Award: Confidence Man

This award recognises performers (and their performances) who have left their mark in 2024. The nominees included Dua Lipa and Sugababes.

The Group Award: Ezra Collective

Ezra Collective is a London-based jazz quintet known for blending traditional jazz with Afrobeat, reggae, hip-hop, and funk, creating a dynamic and genre-defying sound. Ezra Collective has received widespread acclaim for revitalising and broadening jazz’s appeal, particularly in the UK. Their debut album, ‘You Can’t Steal My Joy’ (2019), introduced their vibrant style and featured collaborations with artists like Jorja Smith and Loyle Carner. Their 2022 album, ‘Where I’m Meant To Be’, won the 2023 Mercury Prize, making them the first jazz act to achieve this milestone. The nominees also included Fontaines D.C and English Teacher.

The Album Award: Fontaines D.C. – ‘Romance’

The album ‘Romance’ by Fontaines D.C., released on August 23, 2024, marks the band’s fourth studio album and a significant departure from their earlier, post-punk-dominated sound.  The nominees included Charli XCX with the album ‘Brat’ and The Last Dinner Party’s ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’.

The Trailblazer Award: JADE

The Rolling Stone Trailblazer recognises individuals or groups who have significantly influenced their field by pushing boundaries and pioneering new paths. This award highlights not only artistic excellence but also the ability to inspire others and bring about meaningful change.

JADE is a British singer and songwriter best known for her tenure with the girl group Little Mix, which rose to fame after winning The X Factor in 2011. Following Little Mix’s success and hiatus, JADE launched her solo career with her debut single, ‘Angel of My Dreams’, released in July 2024. Her follow-up single, ‘Fantasy’, took a disco turn, influenced by artists like Donna Summer and Diana Ross.

The Breakthrough Award: English Teacher

The Breakthrough Award recognizes achievements such as standout performances at major festivals, achieving chart-topping releases, or gaining widespread acclaim within a relatively short time.

English Teacher is a British indie rock band that blends elements of punk, post-punk, and art rock. The band gained recognition with their debut single ‘R&B’ in 2021 and has been lauded for their creative and experimental approach to music​. Their debut album, ‘This Could Be Texas‘ won the 2024 Mercury Prize. English Teacher continues to gain attention as one of the UK’s most exciting emerging acts, celebrated for their ability to craft music that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.

The Icon Award: New Order

New Order is a renowned British band formed in 1980 by the remaining members of Joy Division after the tragic death of their lead singer, Ian Curtis. They emerged from the post-punk scene and evolved into pioneers of alternative dance music by blending rock with electronic styles, heavily influencing genres like synth-pop and dance-rock.

The Record Label of the Year: Island Records

Island Records is a legendary music label founded in 1959 by Chris Blackwell in Jamaica. After relocating to London in the early 1960s, Island Records played a pivotal role in the rise of reggae through artists like Bob Marley. The label also diversified, supporting rock, pop, and alternative artists, including U2, Grace Jones, and Amy Winehouse.

Festival of the Year: Brixton’s Wide Awake

The festival held annually in Brixton, London, is a relatively new addition to the festival scene. The event focuses on alternative, electronic, and underground artists, celebrating innovation and inclusivity in music. Wide Awake emphasizes sustainability, featuring eco-friendly practices and supporting local community initiatives. Its diverse programming spans music, talks, and arts, making it a standout cultural event in the UK.

BBC’s “Sound of” first begun in 2003 and since has awarded the likes of Lewis Capaldi, Lady Gaga, Adele, PinkPantheress, RAYE, The Weeknd and HAIM. Last year, the title was won by The Last Dinner Party. This year, some eligibility rules were changed in order to fit more artists: previously, artists couldn’t be nominated if they had an album charting at number two or one in the UK, however now artist are eligible unless they have had more than one album charting in the UK top ten.

Perhaps the most known on a worldwide level out of the eleven contestants is Chappell Roan. The American singer has in fact taken over the world with a very swift rise to fame after releasing her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess” in 2023. Her songs have gone viral on social media platforms, and she achieved two top 10 songs in UK charts (“Good Luck Babe” and “Hot To Go”) and her album peaked at number one.

While Chappell Roan has become a pop icon in less than a year, another strong contestant is English Teacher, the 2025 Mercury Prize winner. The Mercury Prize is awarded to the best British or Irish album of the year, and English Teacher was surely deserving of this title: their debut album “This Could Be Texas” peaked at number eight in the UK, and their tour around the country was sold out.

With English Teacher, another contestant for the Mercury Prize this year was Barry Can’t Swim. Originally from Scotland, Barry Can’t Swim is a DJ and electronic music producer. His debut album “Where Will We Land?” peaked at 12 on UK charts; furthermore, he will be headlining All Points East 2025 in London. But 2023’s Mercury Prize Winner has also been longlisted for the BBC award: Ezra Collective has recently headlined Wembley Arena and their latest album “Dance Like No One’s Watching” peaked at number seven in the UK.

Overall, this year’s competition for “Sound of 2025” is strong and eclectic, with the only well-known artist around the world being Chappell Roan. The winner will be announced on January 10^th after a top five countdown which will take place in the weeks prior to the announcement of the winner.

The festival should see its usual array of storytelling, circus acts, actors and arts at this year’s festival with its incredible set design and production. Boomtown has won many awards including UK Festival Awards “Best Festival Production” in both 2022 and 2023, as well as “Transport Impact Innovators” in 2023. Boomtown was also picked as Major Events Summit’s “Best Non-Sporting Event” in 2023. It was also named by BBC Radio 1 as “Best Dance Festival UK & Europe” in 2023.

Boomtown is known for its quirky and extravagant production and stage design with there being eight distinct city districts with 12 main stages as well as over 50 hidden venues along with thousands of live performers and actors.

Reggae royalty Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley is set to take the stage at Grand Central this year as well as 90s hip-hop legends The Pharcyde. 2023 Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective will also be bringing some jazz to this year’s edition of the festival. Swedish punk outfit Viagra boys are also playing Grand Central as well as internet sensation Marc Rebillet.

Kent duo Soft Play are set make an appearance on the Saturday (August 10) fresh of the back of the release of their newest album ‘Heavy Jelly’ which is their highest charting album yet reaching number 3 on the UK Album Charts. London based neo-soul singer Greentea peng is also going to play a set on Grand Central.

Punk-rap duo Bob Vylan are set to play as they are sure to bring the political themes to the festival as they partner up with Bristol producer Grove to perform on Grand Central. As well as this post-punk duo Sleaford Mods will be playing, showing the diversity of the festival and that it is not just all Drum and Bass.

Moving onto the Origin stage we are going to see Flava D, D&B trio Kings of The Rollers with Inja and P Money play the legendary stage on the Friday. 4AM Kru are sure to bring the energy on Saturday along with Simula and Sota expected to play some memorable Drum and Bass sets. On The last day we will see the icons that are Jungle Cakes take the stage with Ed Solo, Deekline, Benny Page, and Serial Killaz performing a back-to-back. Bou and Pendulum are also billed to perform on Origin.

Among the 100s of other performances across the various stages we will also see the likes of Hak Baker, grime legend D Double E, and Ross From Friends under the moniker Bubble Love. The Wrong Side of The Tracks stage will have Sully, Neff-T, Oppidan, Silva Bumpa, Aries and many more. TikTok sensation Fish56Octogan is also expected to make an appearance at Boomtown at Spectrum 360 as well as Samurai Breaks and Bish.
