Mancunian art rockers Everything Everything have released a live music video for their new single “Pizza Boy”, which is the last single from the band’s forthcoming album Raw Data Feel, which is set for release on the 20th of this month. The record will be released via Everything Everything’s own label Infinity Industries. The album can be pre-ordered here, and you can view the music video down below.

The hypnotic tune, led by a playful bassline and a delightful vocal melody from singer Jonathan Higgs, sees the band exploring familiar but welcome territory, with swirling synths, mesmerising drum beats and falsetto vocals. Speaking on the subject matter of the tune, the band said, according to a press statement: “The song is about recovering from trauma, by focussing on both hedonism and solitude.”

“Pizza Boy” is the fourth single from the group’s upcoming album, having been preceded by “I Want a Love Like This”, “Bad Friday” and “Teletype”. The album’s lead single “Bad Friday” was released in early February, and came alongside the news that the band had used A.I. to help write their new album; a unique approach that explains the record’s title. According to NME, the group came up with a programme that used “the entire terms and conditions of LinkedIn, the ancient epic poem Beowulf, 400,000 4Chan forum posts and the teachings of Confucius”. Certainly embracing the “experimental” angle in as many ways as possible.

Everything Everything’s previous single was released back in March, and is a feverish, musical wind tunnel of ambient pads and plucked synthesiser leads, with an equally trippy, stylised music video. The group said of the tune: “This song started as a challenge Alex set Jon to demo a ‘4-chord banger’ that he could put through a particular rhythmic processor on his home-made modular synthesiser. It’s another very instinctive and impulsive composition, talking about a new relationship and a feel of optimism and possibility.” You can view the video for “I Want a Love Like This” below.

Everything Everything will be playing a series of shows later this month in support of the release of Raw Data Feel, and will be headlining a show at Leceiester’s O2 Academy on Friday the 19th of May.

After releasing their 5th studio album Re-Animator to a pretty solid commercial and critical response in 2020, Mancunian art-rock outfit Everything Everything have continued to ride the wave of consistently top-quality music since their debut in 2010. Their consistency as songwriters constantly pushing their own boundaries has, in my opinion, led to some of the best art-rock of the 2010’s. Now the group are gearing up to release their 6th LP Raw Data Feel on May 20th, you can check out any pre-order details here. To mark the occasion, the group have shared with us our first impression of the album with a relatively gloomy, almost stripped back take on an Everything Everything track; ‘Bad Friday’. Watch the A.I. influenced video below.

In an interview with NME, frontman Johnathan Higgs explained, “This song is about being a victim of violence, explaining it away through the gauze of a ‘crazy night out.’” Adding, “We wanted the video to have a monochrome Ink Spots classicism to it, disrupted by elements of A.I.-generated imagery. This reflects the approach to writing and producing the song – the minimalistic combined with the surreal and disorientating.” According to a statement released by the band, they have added an element of A.I. to their music writing, apparently taking “the entire terms and conditions of LinkedIn, the ancient epic poem Beowulf, 400,000 4Chan forum posts and the teachings of Confucius,” to add a bit of a digital edge to the project. The lyrics, artwork, and aesthetics have also received the A.I. treatment.

This is probably the reasoning behind the release of their new limited-edition lyric book being called “CAPS LOCK ON: Lyrics + Debris 2007-2022”. Really rolling with the current theme. Described by the band as “a full-colour, hardback edition presenting the lyrics to all songs released by the band including b-sides, rarities and new album Raw Data Feel” as well as a “treasure trove of previously unseen images featured alongside the lyrics, including behind-the-scenes archive material of notebooks, chord sheets, set lists and photos.”

Art rock band Everything Everything have shared a new single titled Supernormal. This is the first new material that the Manchester natives have released since the drop of their fifth LP Re-Animator last September. The punchy track is accompanied by a bizarre and hyperreal music video directed and animated by frontman Jonathan Higgs.

The video’s release was followed by a live Q&A with Higgs on YouTube. Higgs commented on the creation of the video, “At this point I’d learned texturing, modelling, rigging, animating, how virtual cameras and lights work, so the path to creating ‘Supernormal’ was a matter of putting it all together, alongside some new experiments in physics simulations.” He added that “The idea was to make dozens of tiny, explosive shots of action, ugly and extreme naked characters being distorted, surreal objects and animals, over-saturated colours, bright lights; all these impossible, grotesque images coming at you far too fast to comprehend. I adjusted and experimented until I saw things that excited or disgusted me, then repeated the process over and over again until I was satisfied.” The jam-packed video is certainly a mind-bender, as previous videos from the band are prone to being.

Higgs explained the inspiration for the song that was written back in 2020 during the composition of Re-Animator. “Supernormal is about supernormal stimuli; highly exaggerated triggers that create a stronger reaction in us than evolution ever intended.” He continued: “Our animal brains can’t help but reach for the bigger, brighter, tastier, sexier, bloodier, more intense experiences. I wanted to create an extremely overwhelming experience in this song and video, it’s about being a slave to our instincts no matter how extreme they become.” The release of Supernormal comes as Everything Everything announce their rescheduled UK & Ireland tour dates for 2022.

The band discussed their process and inspiration in a press release, saying, “We started to notice a lot of online dejection at the state of the world that young people stand to inherit. It was nihilistic, but perfectly understandable and basically rational.”

They continued to explain that “They are inheriting a rapidly warming planet with few jobs and little affordable housing, created by previous generations who seem utterly unapologetic. The attitude is ‘We fucked it, now it’s your problem so you fix it.’ It’s shameful that we’re relying on fifteen year olds to lead the way. We wanted to satirise all of that.”

The video for final single ‘Big Climb’ is out now, and has 6,000 views already. It shows the group working in an office, carrying their instruments in some shots, and interspersed with clips of horrific events the climate crisis has caused. The goal is to show their audience a take on society’s ignorance of climate change while it encourages workers to get back to their capitalist jobs, despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

To celebrate the album’s completion, the band announced a virtual reality concert entitled ‘Virtual RE-ANIMATOR’, with one show taking place yesterday, and one today. It saw Everything Everything perform a full live show including songs from the new album and previous hits, using visual elements to captivate and impress viewers. Furthermore, some fans were able to meet the band, as well as partake in the virtual reality fun themselves.

It has been revealed that ‘Violent Sun’ is the closing track on the album, and it was described in a press release as being “a first in the Everything Everything catalogue.” The release went on to say, “It’s a propulsive rush of melody with a cinematic scale…The band wanted it to feel like the last song played on the dance floor.” Now that fans can listen to the song, this is very apparent in the fast-paced vocal line and suspended synths.

Frontman Jonathan Higgs said himself that “‘Violent Sun’ is about the feeling that something terrible is approaching fast, and you want to hold on to this moment forever.” In his interview with Annie Mac, he expressed this same sentiment, as well as going on to discuss the album, his musical process, and his fans, saying, “every time we’ve put something out that we’re really proud of ourselves, people react really well.”

The band capture their vision for the song in the music video, also released yesterday. Though still in isolation, each member used a GoPro to film themselves running through various locations. The video has gained 13,000 views on YouTube, and still counting.

In his interview for Radio 1, Higgs also mentioned the upcoming ‘RE-ANIMATOR’ tour which Everything Everything will embark on in March 2020. This is to be their first headlining tour in years, but the future of live music is still so uncertain, given the Covid-19 pandemic. He told Mac, “It feels amazing to finally put something in stone. I mean, who knows what the world will be like by then, but we’re looking ahead to March and hopefully we’ll be able to go on the road again.” Tickets are available now from the bands website.

Unlike the previous two efforts, “Planets” arrived with little to no fanfare. Snippets of the song were teased on Everything Everything’s official Instagram account yesterday, referred to as “Bigots In The Batcave” (the opening words to “Planets”) by a fictitious group called Infinity Face (an old name Everything Everything used to go by). To those who hadn’t already figured out what was coming, the band dropped the music video at midnight last night, revealing that they are doing an Instagram livestream at 7pm today to provide more details about the song.

While “Planets” shares the upbeat synth lines of “Arch Enemy”, thankfully for all our sakes frontman Jonathan Higgs opted to give us a break from visual torment when directing this video. Dancing globs of gelatin and rupturing fatbergs have been swapped out for the cutesy antics of a chimpanzee hand puppet. “Can you love me?/More than the planets”, the cuddly fella mimes along to Higgs’ voice. It’s hardly on par with the visceral torment in these lyrics from “Arch Enemy”: “Sphinx of grease, faceless bloat/Sacrifice in your name/Blubber mount, sewage moon/Jets like wire cut your body, they/Slice your teats”.

The uncanniness of our simian cousins – so parallel to our own existence yet aeons apart – is a frequent concern of the band’s, popping up in older cuts “Schoolin”, “Distant Past”, and “NASA Is On Your Side”. But at the start of the video at least, there’s no evolutionary existential dread here (though I wouldn’t be surprised if the goofy dancing chimp was a subtle dig at Coldplay).

“‘Planets’ is a song about calling out to be loved, feeling unworthy and finding the love of the universe instead”, says Higgs in The Line of Best Fit’s coverage of the story – an oddly literal analysis of the song’s refrain from a man whose lyricism is usually so inscrutable. Perhaps this evening’s livestream will shed some new light on things; it’s hard to not ignore the emphasis placed on a single aeroplane and a solitary bee, and their associations with the effects of climate change. It would certainly put a new spin on the song’s central question “Can you love me?/More than the planets”. Watch the music video below to decide for yourself.

A month ago, when I reported on Everything Everything’s previous new music video for the track “In Birdsong”, I called its visuals “so disturbing we were left wondering if we were better off not knowing what lay in store”. How naïve I was to think that was the grossest the group had to offer.

Everything Everything first debuted “Arch Enemy” on the 13th of May during Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, confirming that it was the second single (after “In Birdsong”) from their rumoured upcoming fifth album Re-Animator. Unlike with the release of their previous single, “Arch Enemy” initially dropped with no video attached. But that changed on Monday, when the group posted a clip onto Twitter promising the music video would premier at 6pm on Wednesday via their YouTube channel (yesterday).

The music video for ‘Arch Enemy’ will be premiering this Wednesday 27th May on @YouTube at 18:00 BST. pic.twitter.com/rA6Jdo5pTj

Similar to the rollout of “In Birdsong” – which preceded the unsettling music video with idyllic soundbites of literal birdsong – Monday’s clip showed a camera panned across a sunlit digitally-rendered high street, before hovering forebodingly over a manhole. Sure enough, yesterday’s video has us take a dive down into the gutters below the city. The furious, throbbing mass of gelatin dancers writhe to the song, whose bouncy synths akin to Saint Etienne’s cover of “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” sit at odds with the video’s uneasy subject matter. And we’ve not even reached the gross part yet. As the glutinous mob makes its way past frontman Jonathan Higgs’ head, clumsily green-screened into the foreground singing “Fatberg you smile/With your grave wax eyes”, we encounter the fatberg in question, a fever-dreamt amalgamation resembling the unholy spawn of Crazy Frog and Jabba the Hutt. The dancers convulse in an orgiastic frenzy before the fatberg explodes upwards out the manhole, consuming the entire city in a tsunami of… well, you know what.

Finding only a congregation of greed, toxicity, and waste, in the form of a sentient fatberg in the sewer, he duly prays to it, willing it to purge the decadent world above that has created it.
