In a press release Evanescence said: “Well guys, we have to push this back one more time. We hate to make you wait longer but we are absolutely determined to make this tour we’ve all been looking  forward to happening, so check out new dates. We will be counting the days till we finally get to celebrate all this new music together. In the meantime, stay safe, stay sane, and keep your headbanging to The Bitter Truth! You will have no excuse not to know every word by next spring! We love you!”.

Within Temptation added in their statement: “This is not what we’ve wished for, but reality tells us otherwise: we have to postpone the Worlds Collide Tour. Although we can’t make the current situation better than it is, we hope to put a BIG smile on your faces again soon, because… We haven’t been sitting still and we have a LOT of cool stuff coming up for you! Until then, stay safe. And you know what? Third time’s a charm, so see you in March or April 2022!”.

Both bands kept themselves busy during lockdown. Evanescence released their fifth studio album and  “first album of original music in a decade ‘The Bitter Truth’.”  The album came out in March last year and reached No.4 in UK Charts and No.1 on iTunes in 22 countries. They also collaborated recently with Heavy Metal Entertainment with whom they will launch a graphic anthology series baked on ‘The Bitter Truth‘ cuts, called ‘Echoes From The Void’. Within Temptation also released new music during quarantine. The band’s two new singles ‘Entertain You’ and ‘The Purge’ came out last year and peaked in Top 20 of Billboard Mainstream Rock Indicator Chart.

‘Worlds Collide’ Tour will start on 16th March 2022 in Germany and finish on 14th April in Switzerland.

Alongside the announcement, the group also released single ‘Yeah Right’, a track taken from the upcoming album. This is the third single from the group this year, with their previous singles “Wasted On You“, “The Game Is Over“, and “Use My Voice” being released previous. With captivating groves and playful lyrics, ‘Yeah Right’ is an intoxicating insight into the groups experience within the music industry, that sets high expectations for the bands future releases.

The group celebrated the announcement and the single release with a virtual livestream, dubbed the ‘Evanescence: A Live Session From Rock Falcon Studio’. The performance was streamed on the 5^th December and will be available until the 8^th December from the band’s website. However, the group aren’t limiting themselves to virtual performances, and are planning to embark on their rescheduled Europe tour in September 2021. You can check out the tour dates below:

At this time of the year, it is no surprise to see many exciting musical events get cancelled or pushed off because of the ongoing global health crisis caused by coronavirus. Two iconic rock bands—Evanescence and Within Temptation—are the latest to join the long list of the affected.

The ‘Worlds Collide‘ tour is the very first time these two head-banging icons embark on the road together. They initially announced the tour back in September 2019 and planned to jumpstart the first show in Europe in April 2020. However, the COVID-19 outbreak earlier this year got in the way of their plans to perform, hence the postponement until Fall 2020.

As the crisis is still affecting many people across countries and it is not so safe to hold any major events at the moment, both bands have decided to push back their tour one more time to September 2021. For the European leg, there will be four shows in Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham, and London.

According to press, Evanescence’s frontwoman Amy Lee said: “We are so disappointed that we won’t be seeing you this fall, but we’re accepting the challenge 2020 is giving us and pouring our time and hearts into making a great album instead. Friends, we miss you terribly and can’t wait to play these songs for you next year! Be safe, be well, we love you!”

Meanwhile, Sharon Den Adel of Within Temptation also asked fans to be patient a little bit longer: “We know this year will not be easy for you and we will do whatever it takes to get you through by continuing to write and release new songs. Knowing that we won’t get to play for you this year is hard for everyone, but everyone’s health and wellbeing is our number one priority. Whatever happens, this tour will happen! We can’t wait to see you again in 2021. For now: stay safe.”

This upcoming tour is in support of new music from both bands. Evanescence is set to release their fifth studio album ‘The Bitter Truth‘ sometime this year, while Within Temptation will perform songs from their seventh full-length ‘Resist‘ released in February last year.

The two-time Grammy Award-winners Evanescence was formed in the mid-90s and played a pivotal role for women in rock. They found their break in 2003 after releasing their debut album Fallen that spent 43 weeks on the Billboard 100 Chart, selling a staggering 17 million copies worldwide. Their most famous hit single ‘Bring Me To Life’ formed the base for their global success, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as #1 on the U.K Official Singles Chart. Their latest album, Synthesis was released in 2017 through the renowned BMG record label. Along with a couple of new singles, the majority of the album saw the band rework their original hits with assistance from an orchestral ensemble.

With a history spanning two decades, Within Temptation recently signed a worldwide distribution deal with BMG and partnered with Spinefarm Records for their latest album, Resist released February 2019. Debuting in 1997 with Enter, Within Temptation have since released a total of 7 studio albums and with over 3.5 million record sales they have accumulated a global fan base. To add to their list of accolades, their Resist album has reached #1 on the UK Rock Album Chart and also topped the German album charts for the first time, proving their success and influence within their European audience.

This was the culmination of a tour for their latest album Synthesis, which was released in November last year. The album is an ambitious project by the band, as they looked back over their discography, and reworked songs with the accompaniment of  an orchestra. The album also featured two brand new tracks, titled ‘Imprefection’, and ‘Hi-Lo’.

This isn’t the first time that Amy Lee and co. have experimented with stripping back their typical operatic sound, but this has normally been in an acoustic capacity, rather than orchestral.

Lead vocalist and pianist Amy Lee said prior to this tour that “This will be our first time touring with orchestra and I’m so excited to perform this way-really focus on the vocals, and the emotion and the story we’ve built over the years.”

The band has taken electronic equipment on the road with them, as well as collaborating and arranging with local orchestras, and the electronic effect on the drumkit proves a little challenging in the early parts of the set, as it threatens to drown out the sound of the strings section during songs like ‘Never Go Back’, and ‘Lacrymosa.’ No songs are affected enough as to sound outright bad, but the early set threatens to impinge on the night’s novelty, when the electronic instruments are so strikingly loud.

One constant, however, is the consistent excellence of Amy Lee’s vocals. Even with the drums at their most intrusive, Lee can carry the entire performance, bouncing off both her bandmates and the orchestra around her, harmonising excellently with guitarist/backing vocalist Jen Majura.

The crowd is fully invested in the aims of the band, remaining respectfully silent during pretty much every song, before going wild in between tracks, to show their appreciation.

Fan favourite ‘Bring Me to Life’ comes surprisingly early in the set, illustrating the Lee and co. are intent on performing Synthesis in as grand a way as possible, rather than simply looking to play their hits. An extension of the song’s ending with Lee’s skeletal, solo piano motif matches very well with the strings section, transition superbly into ‘Unravelling.’

From here the set kicks into another gear, simultaneously becoming more stripped back, yet more dynamic, with more emphasis being put on the live orchestra, to excellent effect.

The pounding electronic drums do make a return, but in a far less dominant fashion, being a welcome accompaniment to the set, rather than a distraction. An incendiary rendition of ‘Lost in Paradise,’ is probably the gig’s highest point, swelling gloriously to its crescendo. It could be argued to be better in this arrangement than in it’s original form from 2011’s self-titled album, and stands out as the best illustration of Evanescence’s aims in this project.

A traditionally intimate ‘My Immortal’ follows soon after, with Lee dedicating the song to those in attendance, recognising the new meaning the track has taken on for her since she first wrote the song over a decade ago.

Ultimately, Evanescence’s experiment works-potentially more in a live environment than on an album- and the band must be given credit for (literally) orchestrating the whole thing to such an accomplished level.  Lee and her bandmates pay tribute to their orchestra after the encore, who were truly outstanding all night, and all on stage take a bow for the greatly appreciative audience. This date at the Hammersmith Apollo was added due to popular demand, and based on this set, it’s easy to see why.

The band will take to the stage at London’s Eventim Apollo on June 14. It will be the first time in over four years the band have played a set on these shores, following the four-date arena tour the band completed in 2012. The band took a break after that tour wrapped up, before coming together again in 2015 to play a series of dates in the US. Last year they again toured the US, playing their classic material. Frontwoman Amy Lee, expressed her delight at once again playing in front of a crowd, telling Rolling Stone, ‘Just when you thought I was off the hard stuff! It’s going to feel amazing to step back onstage with the band this fall [2016]. We had such a tight gel solidifying onstage the last few shows, and were enjoying it so much, we were all lamenting that it was so short and have been on the lookout for more opportunities to play live.’

Although the band haven’t produced any new music, that doesn’t mean Lee hasn’t been busy. She released her first album aimed specifically at children, ‘Dream Too Much’ in September last year, featuring covers of songs as diverse as ‘Rubber Duckie’ from Sesame Street, and The Beatles’ ‘Hello Goodbye.’ The band also released an ‘Ultimate Collection’ compilation album in December. Lee told Forbes that the album had allowed her to reflect on the band’s history and put herself in the position of fans who have watched the band from the beginning, and will presumably be in attendance in June. She revealed that now she, ‘can just stand there with them, ‘‘Okay, I’m a fan of this thing too, it’s a huge part of my life and I can look at it from the outside and appreciate it too.’ Not just be wrapped up in my own head that nothing is ever good enough, which is an easy path to go down for me.’’ She finished, ‘I love our fans, they are just the best people on earth.’

There are no current plans for any new music, but before the band split in 2012, Lee gave NME a clue as to where she might take the group’s sound in the future, saying, ‘I love folk, that’s a big part of my background. I’ve written music that’s a lot simpler and more acoustic and I got into a moment where I’m obsessed with dance music, things like Massive Attack and Portishead. I’d like to do something that’s not driven by loud guitars, I love the aggression they bring, but I’d like to try something out.’
