Around two weeks since synth-mad singer-songwriter Look Mum No Computer was revealed as our entry for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), the song he’ll be competing with has been released to the public. While there has been an expectation that the track would defy convention, it’s proven to be even more unusual than first promised.

Artist Sam Battle, whose musical vehicle Look Mum No Computer was selected by the BBC’s panel of judges, is an innovator and developer of curious objects, chief among them unique analogue synthesisers. He uses them to create his own brand of electronic pop, forgoing modern computerised effects which make up a vast majority of current chart music instrumentation. His single ‘Eins, Zwei, Drei’ made its debut on Scott Mills’ BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show last Friday, marking a real shift from the instantly-accessible theme of past Eurovision entries.

The song is a pulsating, energetic synth-pop banger, with vocals and lyrics in the style of 90s Britpop icons Blur. While the music has a eurobeat feel to it and the anthemic chorus refrain is in German, the vibe of the track is quintessentially British. The accompanying music video sells the story of escaping the 9-5 working existence and indulges in niche British cultural icons such as the humble “roly-poly” dessert, while showcasing Sam’s custom “Kosmo” synthesiser unit. Ending with him riding a modified Mini with a payload of speakers and synths into the sky, this is a very novel piece, even for the ESC’s threshold for weirdness. The full package is a far cry from 2025’s glamorous-but-safe entry ‘What The Hell Just Happened?’ performed by Remember Monday.

Battle explains the story behind the song in interviews with the BBC, with the origins being quite humorous. When talking to BBC Radio Kent, he explains that he’d initially approached the UK’s Eurovision committee to aid with writing an entry for another artist, but was shocked to find they wanted to write one in collaboration for him to perform – “somehow my manager managed to get in front of them and they said ‘oh you could try and write a song I suppose,’ so I tried to write a song and it was very conventional. But then I went to a writing session, and because I’m a songwriter for people, I was expecting I was going to write for people. And I was like ‘who are we writing for today? Which one of us are we writing for today?’ and they were like ‘we’re writing for you!’”

In another interview with BBC’s Mark Savage, he tells that the song’s name comes from a serendipitous incident during the writing session. “It’s ‘one, two, three’ in German. It’s completely wacky, the situation that happened. When I was coming up with the actual ‘Eins, Zwei, Drei,’ I was actually moving a sofa to get my synth set up and I was shouting ‘eins, zwei, drei’ and that’s when they were like ‘that’s the name of the song!’” With the ESC’s Grand Final taking place in Vienna, the German language chorus may be a hit with the local Austrian crowd. According to the BBC, the song has more German words than Germany’s own entry, ‘Fire’ performed by Sarah Engels.

The song was co-written by an all-star team of composers behind past Eurovision winners – Lasse Midtsian Nymann (NYLAN) who wrote on 2024 Swiss winner ‘The Code’ by Nemo; Julie ‘Kill J’ Aagaard, a multi-platinum singer-songwriter; and Thomas Stengaard, who contributed to 2013’s Danish champion ‘Only Teardrops’ by Emmelie De Forest. The live choreography for the performance is corralled by Fredrik ‘Benke’ Rydman, the visionary behind the spectacular staging of ‘The Code’, who has also dabbled in the bizarre with Käärijä’s hugely-memorable ‘Cha Cha Cha’ for Finland in 2023.

Look Mum No Computer will bring his voice, his synthesisers, and no doubt his Mini to the Wiener Stadthalle for the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final on the 16th of May. Currently, speculation is very positive with this brave new approach from the UK, but we’ll have to wait and see how the European fans embrace it. You can follow Sam’s journey through his Youtube channel, his Instagram account, or his personal website, with the BBC also covering his course to May.

Following last week’s news that the maiden voyage of the Eurovision Song Contest’s live tour was postponed due to “unforeseen challenges”, British fans of the contest have just been treated to some exciting developments. The BBC, who process candidates and selects the eventual winner, have revealed the UK’s 2026 representative as Look Mum No Computer, a singer-songwriter with a large online following and a flair for geeky electronic music.

This year marks the 70th annual Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), held in Austria following singer JJ’s victory with song ‘Wasted Love’ in 2025. As a member of the “Big Four” of Eurovision, the UK’s entry receives an instant bye to the grand final. Last year’s British entrants Remember Monday were fairly well received by the internal Eurovision jury, circumventing our national tradition by receiving points and finishing 19th out of 26.

The ESC is organised by a cohort of broadcasting companies around Europe, known as the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and with the BBC as our primary public broadcaster it has always been a key part of the EBU. In the past, they ran live televised auditions and a public vote to choose our candidate for the song contest, but between 2011 and 2015, and currently since 2019 they instead elect them via an internal jury of music industry professionals.

This afternoon the BBC revealed their choice – Sam Battle, who goes under the alias Look Mum No Computer. He is as they describe him in the article “an inventor of unique musical machines”, an innovator who engineers novel instruments and synthesisers from retro toys and tech as a pastime. Among his many contraptions, highlights include a church organ made from Furbies, a bizarre children’s toy from the turn of the millennium, and the Sega MegaDrive synthesiser, created using a Sega MegaDrive games console. He owns a museum in Ramsdale in Kent called “This Museum Is (Not) Obsolete”, which houses and displays his many curios.

Formerly the frontman of an indie rock band called Zibra, performing a BBC Introducing set at Glastonbury Festival in 2015 with them, Battle opened his Youtube channel in 2013 to promote the group. After the band dissolved he then used it to post videos documenting his inventions before uploading his debut solo effort ‘Groundhog Day’ in 2019. Between all of his projects combined, he’s amassed 1.4 million followers on his online platforms, with his Youtube account alone having over 704,000 followers and nearly 85 million views.

His studio releases are a lively mix of electro-pop played on a full arsenal of analogue synthesisers, with his indie-style vocals laid over it. In recent years the UK Eurovision selections have made a reputation for playing it safe, opting for more generic pop with limited success other than Sam Ryder’s second place finish in 2022, but Look Mum No Computer seems to be a turning point to something more radical. After having heard the 2026 entry single, BBC Radio 2 DJ and Eurovision enthusiast Scott Mills said “The UK often gets criticised at Eurovision, or it has in some years. ‘We’re always really safe, we always keep it really middle of the road.’ So we are going to try something different this year. Why not? Let’s try something different, and it is different.” The BBC also quoted other opinions, including Oscar-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton, who said on social media site X he was “very excited we are going to have a truly unique eccentric oddball repping the UK (meant in the best way possible) at Eurovision”.

The grand final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest will be held at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna on the 16th of May. Look Mum No Computer’s entry is due to be make its debut to the public on Scott Mills’ Radio 2 breakfast show at some point in the next few weeks. You can follow Sam’s journey on the BBC and on his Youtube channel, or find his music on streaming platforms.

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) organisers have today announced a Europe-wide tour, which will take place after this year’s competition wraps in Vienna. In a time where the contest has been mired in controversy, is this a bold step forwards, or is it looking like “nul points”?

The tour has been announced to celebrate the ESC’s 70th anniversary, with the first competition being held in Lugano, Switzerland, in 1956. The contest has broken broadcasting records for its longevity, running every year since then, with the only exception being 2020’s edition’s cancellation at the hands of the global COVID pandemic.

Each contest involves a national entrant selection process before the finals take place in a host city, traditionally but not always in the home country of the previous year’s winner. The UK has hosted the Eurovision Song Contest nine times, four of them in London alone. On the last occasion, it was held in Liverpool in 2023 on the behalf of winner Ukraine, who were unable to viably accommodate it due to the ongoing Russian invasion.

Following Russia’s illegal military interventions, they were barred from the competition in 2022. However, Eurovision, which was founded to foster non-political relations and peace between nations, is now contending with another conflict in 2026. Following on from Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel in October 2023, the ensuing war and humanitarian disaster in Gaza has led to Israel’s presence in the contest receiving significant scrutiny. Israel, although not in Europe, has participated in the event since 1973, winning it in 1978, 1979, 1998, and 2018.

With tensions mounting due to Israel’s continued breaches of international law, their inclusion has led to several major members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) withdrawing from this year’s contest. The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Spain, Slovenia and Iceland have all removed their entry and their national broadcasters have boycotted the televised showing. Continued protests across the continent still threaten to jeopardise the contest, even in those countries still engaged in it.

Despite the drama surrounding it, the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest final is still scheduled for the 16th of May, to be held in Vienna. Austria’s capital last held the event in 2015, and the Wiener Stadthalle will host it again following singer JJ’s 2025 victory with track ‘Wasted Love’. The newly revealed tour will begin a month later in June this year, stopping at 10 cities across Europe.

The first date of the tour is on the 15th of June in London’s O2 Arena, a 20,000 capacity indoor venue inside the city’s O2 centre. The tour then passes through most of Western Europe, much to the chagrin of Eastern European fans, before finishing in Stockholm’s Aviici Arena on the 2nd of July.

So far no acts have been confirmed, but the organisers promise 10 of the grand finalists from this year’s contest will be there, performing a mix of their entries from this year and covers of songs from Eurovision’s illustrious past. The EBU aim to allow fans who couldn’t make it to Vienna, where the Grand Final has already sold out of tickets, to share in the experience of Eurovision. The promoters claim they will be posting information on performers and ticket sales soon on their website.

Several European countries are set to boycott the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia have all announced that they will not participate in or broadcast the contest in Vienna, citing Israel’s inclusion while the war in Gaza continues. Their decisions mark one of the most coordinated withdrawals from Eurovision in recent years.

Ireland’s public broadcaster RTÉ has confirmed that it will neither send an act nor air the show, arguing that taking part would be incompatible with its responsibilities as a public service broadcaster during an ongoing conflict in which civilians are suffering heavily. They released a statement saying that their participation “remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza”. Spain’s RTVE, traditionally one of the key funding pillars of Eurovision, has echoed those concerns, stating that it cannot justify participation. At the same time, Israel is allowed to compete under the current circumstances. Dutch broadcaster Avrotros and RTV Slovenia have issued similar statements, formally aligning themselves with the boycott and stressing that their decisions are directed at states and institutions rather than individual performers.

Broadcasters behind the boycott point primarily to the war in Gaza, highlighting high civilian casualties, the humanitarian crisis and repeated calls from rights groups for stronger international pressure on Israel. They argue that sharing a stage with Israel in what is framed as a celebratory entertainment event risks normalising the conflict and undermining their own stance on human rights and international law. Some executives and commentators have also referred to earlier allegations about irregularities or possible unfair influence in Eurovision voting, saying these disputes have made it harder to claim that the contest is fully detached from political agendas.

The boycotts are not a first for the competition. In 1969, the UK, Spain, France and the Netherlands were declared joint winners after all securing 18 points. In response, Finland, Portugal, Norway and Sweden boycotted the contest the following year. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which runs Eurovision, introduced a tiebreak rule a year later. Another more politically motivated boycott was in 1975 and 1976, when Greece and Turkey boycotted the event after Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974.

The EBU has defended the decision to allow Israel to participate, describing the contest as a competition between independent broadcasters rather than between governments. The EBU points to planned voting reforms, including a stronger role for professional juries and stricter general oversight, as evidence that it is addressing concerns about fairness while keeping the event open to all eligible members. Major broadcasters such as the BBC and Austria’s ORF have publicly supported Israel’s continued participation, warning that exclusions based on foreign policy would politicise the event even further and could trigger boycotts in the opposite direction, deepening divisions in the Eurovision community.

On Friday (February 8) BBC Radio 1 presenters Nat O’Leary and Vicky Hawkesworth appeared to announce this year’s Eurovision entry, despite the BBC not formally announcing the news yet. They shared pop-country girl group Remember Monday were set to represent the United Kingdom.

On the radio show, Group Chat with Nat and Vicky, the presenters shared: “Now we have to talk a little about Eurovision because we’ve gone a different route this year.”

“So this year they’re going for a country theme, and country is having its moment, still, which I’m really glad to see, we saw Beyoncé win album of the year at the Grammys for Cowboy Carter and now this girl band, which are called Remember Monday, are going to be representing us at Eurovision this year”.

“So we’ve got Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull and Charlotte Steel, and they’ve already been on TV, they’ve been on The Voice in 2019, so they know what they’re doing, they’ve got us this year”.

There’s no way this is how the BBC just officially revealed the UK Eurovision artist pic.twitter.com/r5Rl206bZo

— Lewis @lewnoia.bsky.social (@_onlyteardrops) February 7, 2025

Remember Monday appeared on The Voice UK in 2019, they were praised for their powerful vocals and chemistry as a group. Being coached by icon, Jennifer Hudson, they performed classics like ‘Kiss From A Rose’ and ‘Jailbreaker’ before being knocked out during the singing-reality show’s knockout stage. Since then, the group has released various singles along with their debut EP ‘Hysterical Women’ in 2023 and a second EP ‘Crazy Anyway’ in October last year. Their biggest song thus far is ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ which has over 900,000 streams on Spotify.

The ‘Laugh About It’ performers, potentially join a long list of UK’s best talent, including Years & Years’ Olly Alexander who sang ‘Dizzy’ last year despite finishing in 18th place. With five wins and a growing attention to country music, Remember Monday are in for a high chance. Perhaps following in the footsteps of previous winners from the UK including: Sandie Shaw (1967), Lulu (1969), Brotherhood of Man (1976), Bucks Fizz (1981), and Katrina & The Waves (1997).

O’Leary and Hawkesworth have potentially let the news slip prematurely, as no announcement has yet been made by the BBC. The broadcasting company have not confirmed the news and has stated, “any announcement regarding Eurovision will be made in due course”.

Many were left confused by the announcement, given the lack of hype around its anticipation to be released. Others believe that although the news may have dropped early, Remember Monday are likely to be this year’s contestants.

The news follows the announcement of David May joining BBC Executives to find this year’s Eurovision contestant to represent the UK. May had recently managed Sam Ryder, 2022 runner up with his track ‘SPACE MAN’. If the announcement of Remember Monday representing the UK this year is true, fans can be expected to be surprised with a country-pop anthem during the ceremony.

The BBC and BBC Studios have confirmed the search for the United Kingdom’s next Eurovision Song Contest act and song is well underway. The forthcoming 69th Eurovision Song Contest in 2025 will be held in Basel, Switzerland following Nemo’s victory at this year’s Grand Final with ‘The Code’.

Nemo’s win marked the first-ever non-binary winner of Eurovision and Switzerland’s first win since 1988.

The UK are taking the selection process even more serious for next year, recruiting the leading UK music industry figure David May to accompany Andrew Cartmell, Executive Producer BBC Studios North to lead the search.

David May previously worked with the BBC in 2022 as Sam Ryder’s manager, when Ryder achieved the runner-up position with ‘SPACE MAN’ at Eurovision in Turin. With over 17 years of experience under his belt, May is accredited with over 200 million streams as a writer/producer in conjunction with his success as Ryder’s manager which saw a Number 1 UK album, two Number 2 singles and multiple prestigious nominations.

May spoke his work with the BBC for next years Eurovision contestant stating: “I’m excited to be working with BBC Studios and the BBC on this journey. We’re seeking talent and a song that embodies the essence of UK music. We want to collaborate with an authentic act who has a genuine, heartfelt story to tell, and an unmatched vocal tonality and range. Ultimately, we’re looking for a powerful three-minute performance that resonates with and moves audiences across Europe and beyond”.

Andrew Cartmell, Head of Delegation at Eurovision for the UK provided a comment in regard to May’s previous work with Eurovision contestant, Sam Ryder, revealing: “David played a major part in Sam Ryder’s success in 2022, and I’m thrilled that we are working together again. David has huge industry expertise, a real understanding of how Eurovision works and a determination, along with the BBC and BBC Studios to achieve a high placing in May next year”.

With the goal of topping the leaderboard next year, the United Kingdom have a long and rememberable history at Eurovision. The United Kingdom have won the Eurovision Song Contest five time, placing it behind Ireland and Sweden which are tied with seven wins each. Additionally, the UK has come in the runner-up position a record breaking 16 times. Most recently with Sam Ryder’s 2022 entry.

The UK Eurovision wins thus far are: Sandie Shaw in 1967 with Puppet on a String, Lulu in 1969 with ‘Boom Bang-a-Bang’, Brotherhood of Man in 1976 with ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’, Bucks Fizz in 1981 with ‘Making Your Mind Up’ and Katrina and The Waves in 1997 with Love Shine A Light’.

The act and song representing the United Kingdom will be publicly announced before the European Broadcasting Union’s deadline in March 2025.

With the UK’s track record, it is no wonder so much effort is going into selecting next year’s act.

Singer and songwriter Martin Lee has passed away aged 77.

Lee was most prominently known as being a member of pop group Brotherhood of Man, after he joined the group in 1972 as lead vocalist and guitarist.

A statement was released on the band’s Facebook on October 1 to announce the death of their “great friend and colleague”. Lee sadly passed away on the evening of Sunday 29 September from heart failure following a short illness.

The statement emphasised the group who “toured the world together in harmony” and have “many happy memories” together are in “total shock and cannot imagine a world without Martin Lee”.

Lee’s contributions to Brotherhood of Man saw him responsible for co-writing their three number one records, along with performing lead vocals on their 1976 Eurovision Song Contest track ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’ which achieved first prize.

The success of ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’ named Lee and his other band members: Nicky Stevens, Lee Sheriden and Sandra Stevens (his spouse of 45 years) Eurovision legends. The track topped the leaderboard during the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest in the Netherlands with 164 points, more than 70 points more than Switzerland, the runners-up.

The single would go on to sell six million copies and earn the number one chart spot in 31 countries, earning Brotherhood of Man a place in the Guinness World Records book as the biggest selling Eurovision single and the biggest winner by percentage of vote. Lee went on to receive three Ivor Novello Awards for his composition of the track.

Lee is also responsible for Brotherhood of Man’s two additional UK number one hits with ‘Angelo’ and ‘Figaro’ in respectively 1977 and 1978, after co-writing both of the singles.

Born Martin Barnes in Surrey, Lee had spent much of his formative years in Australia, until the passing of his mother, which saw Lee and his father return to the UK.

It would be in his teen years where Lee would develop an interest in music, granting him to learn the guitar and form his first band.

Prior to Lee’s prominent presence in Brotherhood of Man, the singer-songwriter had played in the Johnny Howard Band and released a solo single titled ‘Cry José’.

Lee and Brotherhood of Man would continue to tour the world until their retirement from performing in 2020.

Even after his passing, Martin Lee remains a prevalent figure in Eurovision history and British pop music and culture.

And I think that aligns with Eurovision.”

The 25-year-old singer from London, whose full name is Holly Mae Muller, has been rising in notoriety over the last few years.

For the first time in this century, the United Kingdom has been given the responsibility to host the annual music event we all know as the infamous Eurovision Song Contest. This has come around after last years winners, Ukraine, being unable to host this years event due to the war. So the UK has willingly stepped in to host the 67th edition in their name.

Broadcasted across the BBC, the show is set to be like no other this year. Expect to have a whole series of different shows and programmed content for the audience to indulge in as a build up between broadcasts. For the first time ever the Semi-Finals and the Grand Final will be aired live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. During which they will provide wall to wall entertainment to the shows fans across TV, BBC iPlayer, the radio, BBC Sounds and online.

This distinguished event hosts the participation of 37 countries and the winning of a life changing trophy. Last year the Ukrainian rap group Kalush, who formed in 2019, took their humble victories home with a whopping 631 points. A third victory for the countries Eurovision history.

During the whole week there will be highlights from The One Show and BBC Breakfast live from Liverpool. Whilst BBC Radio and BBC Sounds deliver entertainment in the meantime, BBC 2 will be the main lodging for the actual broadcasting of the show.

The vast selection of entertainment will be carried out by our country’s leading and quick witted hosts to ensure a good running throughout the Eurovision display. For our Grand Final commentary we will be guided through by the English radio DJ and presenter Scott Mills and the renowned broadcaster Rylan. The Semi-Finals will be presented by the BBC presenter Paddy O’Connell. Whilst both Semi-Finals broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer will be presented by Alesha Dixon, Julia Sanina and Hannah Waddingham as well as the appearance Graham Norton joining the musical trio for the Grand Final.

“We couldn’t be more proud and excited to give our audiences such a huge array of world class Eurovision content. It’s an honour for the BBC to host the show on behalf of Ukraine, and we’re committed to do them proud. The level of collaboration and coordination across so much of the output is truly amazing. Let the Eurovision Song Contest begin!” Expressed Kate Phillips, BBC Director.

Not only will the contestants be taking to the stage but special visitors from around the world also. Artists such as Rita Ora, last years winners Kalush, UK star Sam Ryder, Rebecca Ferguson, Alyosha and more to be announced.

This years Eurovision Song Contest will be running from the 9th May to the 13th.

English singer and songwriter, Mae Muller, has been announced as this years act representing the UK for the Eurovision Song Contest. It was announced on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 breakfast show that the songstress would be the UK’s 2023 performer. She will perform her feel-good breakup track, ”I Wrote a Song”, in the hopes to beat last years incredible scores by Sam Ryder.

The UK came second in 2022 to Ukraine, who won with Kalush Orchestra’s performance of their song ”Stefania.”The BBC has been working with management company, Tap Management, in order to complete the selection process. The same company was used last year, as Sam Ryder was chosen to secure the 2022 UK entrant spot.

The 25-year-old North Londoner was born in 1997, which was the year the UK last won the international song contest. 1997 UK Eurovision winners were Katrina and the Waves with a performance of their song ”Love Shine a Light.” Muller was previously the support act for Little Mix on their 2019 tour and has collaborated with British rapper Aitch and DJ Sigala. The singer is the first female act in five years to represent the UK.

Following the announcement of the UK 2023 entrant, BBC Eurovision posted a sneak-peak at the UK’s 2023 Eurovision song and said ”Our UK artist for #Eurovision2023 is the incredible @maemuller_! Here she is with the official video for her #Eurovision track, ”I Wrote A Song.”

Our UK artist for #Eurovision2023 is the incredible @maemuller_!
