After starting the year with a social media wipe and world tour announcements, Enter Shikari dropped eighth studio album ‘Lose Your Self’ at midnight last night, with no fanfare and no warning. The follow up to 2023’s ‘A Kiss For The Whole World’ is another statement piece from the St Albans alternative rock quartet, who have always embedded symbolism and ethical messages into their music.

Since their inception in 2003, vocalist Rou Reynolds, guitarist Rory Clewlow, bassist Chris Batten and drummer Rob Rolfe have continuously evolved their sound. Enter Shikari is best known for a lively fusion of rock, hardcore punk, and electronic dance music. In the early days, they leant heavily into the hardcore and rave elements, but ‘A Kiss For The Whole World’ saw them embrace a vibrant synth-pop style while still maintaining a strong rock presence. The band has also been lauded as one of the top British live acts of the last 20 years, since their breakthrough as rowdy rave-rockers through to their current era of arena-crushing rock with a heart.

Since announcing their tour dates for the UK, Europe and North America back in January, Shikari returned to radio silence. The group had not released any material since ‘A Kiss For The Whole World’, which was a UK Number One Album in 2023, and its remixed companion piece ‘Dancing On The Frontline’ in 2024. Last night however, their Instagram account was again cleared of content, save for one post revealing the surprise release of ‘Lose Your Self’, which had snuck its way onto the internet at midnight.

In a newsletter, Reynolds explained the rationale behind its low-key launch: “We’re delighted to present LOSE YOUR SELF, and give people the chance to hear a Shikari record like never before – as a cohesive whole. We want people to go on a proper journey with this album, and see where it takes them. No lead up, no singles, and no explanation. Forcing the listener to actually listen, without being drip-fed ideas out of context, or spoon-fed explanations. We simply present it all, for the listener to immerse themself in. Releasing in this way was also a decision to not be distracted by chart races, or accolades and things. We got the No.1 album on our last record. This is simply about the music being presented in a natural way.”

Enter Shikari have always packed their albums and live shows with messages of hope, critiques of the state of the world and urgent pleas for causes like environmental sustainability and peace. The theme of this one seems to be a stark look at the current affairs around AI, with a heavy emphasis on introspection and a cultural loss of humanity. Reynolds finishes the post with the statement “Despite turning out to be one of our darkest and heaviest albums to date, it also preaches hope and offers answers. Shikari will always offer hope, because without hope there is no action. We’ll just always offer it with a dose of realism.”

The title track ‘Lose Your Self’ is a classic Enter Shikari opener, blasting in with big riffs and an EDM feel reminiscent of the band’s live cover versions of Faithless’s ‘Insomnia’. Later songs like ‘Find Out The Hard Way’ are upbeat anthems, while the darkness and negativity comes through in ‘I can’t keep my hands clean’ and both parts of ‘The Flick Of A Switch’. The peak of the album is its genius three-part closing suite ‘Spaceship Earth’, where the feelings of hope begin to flutter up and the boys really get to show off their composing chops on a progressive-rock movement.

Shikari played their first live show of the year in Manchester this week, making an intimate return to the 400-capacity venue Satan’s Hollow on the 9th of April. Their last show there in 2006 stuck with the members as a significant milestone in their ascent to the big leagues. Last night, they announced an April run of small-venue launch shows, which they promise will “give fans a unique experience to see the band up close and personal, and a chance to see the brand new songs live for the first time.” Then, they’re back on the road for their North American tour through the summer, before finishing in November for their Europe, UK and Ireland headlining dates.

‘Lose Your Self’ is out now on streaming platforms, as well as on physical releases available from their official sellers. Catch Enter Shikari touring the album this year on these dates:

The St Albans’ alternative rock quartet have been regaled as one of the top live bands in the country, even since their early demos and first LP ‘Take To The Skies’ took off in 2007. Early singles ‘Mothership’ and ‘Sorry You’re Not A Winner’ tapped into a crossover of distorted guitars and harsh vocals with synthesisers and drum machines. Their live shows became a major international talking point across early social media platforms like MySpace and Facebook in its infancy, due to their angsty energy and the rave-esque light displays engaging the crowd.

With each new release, the band experimented and developed bold new sonic blends, never staying in one sound for too long. Third release ‘A Flash Flood Of Colour’ in 2011 doubled down on the electronic elements, fifth album ‘The Spark’ in 2017 moved the needle to more melodic songs, and their most recent collection 2023’s ‘A Kiss For The Whole World’ brought all of their previous elements into a joyful rock record full of heart.

All four members of Enter Shikari have a reputation for being outspokenly conscientious, never shying away from conversation about morality and politics. At all of their shows, frontman Rou Reynolds makes impassioned speeches about themes of equality, climate change awareness, and stances against current wars. In an Instagram post, bassist Chris Batten wrote “These shows will be a celebration of human connection. A safe space where we can come together and connect under the power of music, where we can leave the horrors and the struggles of the world outside for at least a few hours.”

The band have announced that as with their previous tours, all tickets sold for the UK leg will include a donation of £1 to support grassroots venues nationwide, via the Music Venue Trust (MVT). In the MVT’s announcement, Reynolds stated that without independent music institutions, “UK culture would decay dramatically. And we’d all be left drowning in the most mind-numbing corporate pop music and pointless, AI-produced drivel.” Enter Shikari have always made the effort to play a variety of venues on their relentless touring cycles, from sold-out arenas in front of thousands, to local hideaways playing to a few hundred fans.

With the 2026 tour, it is back to the former, beginning with the Australian circuit in May and a European run in early November. Following this, the UK stage of their arena tour begins on the 13th of November in Nottingham, passing through Cardiff, Hull, Glasgow and Manchester, culminating in two nights at London’s Alexandra Palace.

Support is provided by American breakthrough stars The Callous Daoboys, and Cardiff’s emo favourites Holding Absence. Tickets go on sale for mailing list subscribers tomorrow, Wednesday the 28th of January at 10AM GMT, with general sale commencing at 10AM on Friday the 30th.

Enter Shikari have announced that they are doing an intimate tour throughout the UK at the end of 2024. This tour will see a big downgrade in venue capacity for the Band as they played a massive UK arena Headline tour in February of this year which celebrated the release of their last release ‘A Kiss For The Whole World’ and saw them partner up with the Music Venue Trust, as well as the fact they are set to play on the main stage at download festival later this week. They will be playing at some much smaller venues this time round, getting up close and personal with their fans.

+ Enter Shikari will head out on a short U.K tour of more intimate venues in November and December! Taking along the excellent @TeenageWrist for the ride. pic.twitter.com/nlO8kCscLL

While their last tour, which was their biggest UK tour to date, supported smaller venues by donating £1 of every ticket sold for the arena tour to the Music Venue Trust, this upcoming tour will see the St. Albans four-piece play at some of these smaller venues.

The band will commence this intimate tour at the Foundry in Torquay on the 26th of November before playing in Sheffield, Liverpool, Norwich and Birmingham, and will finish the tour at Lees Cliff Hall in the seaside town of Folkestone in Kent. They will be joined by Los Angeles Alt. rock band, Teenage Wrist, on all of the dates.

Speaking about this upcoming more personal tour, frontman and producer Rou Reynolds highlighted the importance of giving back to fans saying that “People often travel considerable distances to come to live shows, so we feel it’s important for us to make the effort as well sometimes and play places that your standard tour wouldn’t normally.”

He added “On this run we’ve got some smaller stops that we haven’t played in ages, sandwiched in with cities like Birmingham, Liverpool, and Glasgow, that we didn’t get to visit on our arena tour.”

He also told fans that this may well be the last UK tour for a little while: “As much as we love the bigger rooms it’s going to be killer to play some smaller sweatier places again, and as these will be our last UK shows for quite a while, we couldn’t go into hiding without one last visit to the Barras!”

This announcement comes alongside a video for the live performance of their recent single, ‘Losing My Grip’, at Wembley arena. The single, that was released in January, saw them collab with Fever 333’s Jason Aalon Butler and will be included in their upcoming album, ‘Dancing On the Frontline’, which is going to include various Shakari sound system mixes as well as some BBC live sessions of their songs and this will be released on the 5th of July via So Recordings.

Music Venue Trust (MVT), a UK registered charity, have created ‘The Artist Pledge’, that is asking artists who have now reached arena level success to give back to grassroots venues.

Following the pandemic, grassroots venue’s suffered immensely, and faced £90 million debt in 2021 as a result of increasing costs after Coronavirus. Thanks to MVT’s campaign, #SaveOurVenues, they received many donations and support, allowing the majority to survive their re-opening post-pandemic.

However, many music venues are still in a precarious situation, which they found from their annual report, leading to their new pledge. This pledge asks major music labels to pay back into grassroots venue, allowing them to survive and thrive. MVT have confirmed that over 45 artists have already signed the pledge, including: The K’s, Enter Shikari, and Frank Turner. This will ensure that artists acknowledge where their careers began, and how they’ve grown, alongside aiding smaller venues economically by paying a small amount back to these venues when they begin performing in arenas.

Enter Shikari have been particularly vocal about the importance of this, and announced that £1 from every ticket of their 2024 tour will be donated to MVT. Lou Reynolds, the four piece’s front man, told NME that “Grassroots music venues in the UK are under existential threat. Every time we lose another one we lose a vital part of our culture”.

MVT presented their requests at Parliament, and reminded listeners of the heavily demanded levy on gig ticket for events at arenas, due to the detrimental impact it is having on smaller venues. The report found that around two live music venues are closing each week, emphasising the importance of the levy and this pledg

Whilst on stage in front of thousands of fans, lead singer Rou Reynolds took the opportunity to express his lament for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as the band’s solidarity with Palestine.

The St Albans based band started their captivating speech by stating: “We cannot just enjoy this moment without acknowledging the fact that there are children being blown to pieces by a government and a country that has been completely lost in nationalistic and religious fervour.”

Continuing to express his support of Palestine, Reynolds said: “with the activists and actionists up and down the country who have been blocking and targeting the Israeli weapons manufacturing factories. Our country is very complicit in this atrocity, and supports those who are targeting the investment banks that are effectively bankrolling genocide. We have been yelling ‘Free Gaza’, ‘Free Palestine’ for 15 years. I just hope to God that there is still a Gaza and a Palestine left when this fucking nightmare ends. So let us be grateful for tonight, we have safety. We have community, we have love, we have human connection. Let us treasure this feeling that we all have tonight.”

The current death toll of Palestinians in Gaza stands at 28,775, with around 1,410 Israelis killed and around 100 Israeli hostages still remaining in Hamas captivity after the October 7 attacks. Israel is currently being urged by many Palestinian supporters not to send ground forces into Rafah on the Egyptian border, where many of the strip’s citizens are now living after areas closer to their homes became engulfed by fighting. Around 1.5million people are living in Rafah, among fears that there are few to no other places for Palestinians to seek refuge. The BBC reported “tens of thousands” gathered in London yesterday for pro-Palestine rallies.

This is not the first time the British rockers have spoken out about the horrors of war and their distaste for modern day worldwide conflicts. Their 2012 song Stalemate depicts this, with lyrics such as “Money is made when bombs are dropping in Afghanistan, and when phosphorous falls in Palestine.” The four-piece also signed an open letter for ceasefire in November of last year, alongside other artists such as Architects and The Last Dinner Party.

Music venue The Pioneer has been a centre for creativity for 82 years and the band are now looking to help it become a hub for touring acts once again.

Proud to announce our partnership with @thepioneerclub and @HeadlinerHub to try and make more things happen in St Albans, and bring more music to the local community.

We’re looking for your help. Head to https://t.co/HME5g5d9hS for more info on how to be involved.

— ENTER SHIKARI (@ENTERSHIKARI) August 16, 2023

Enter Shikari have firmly planted themselves as one of Britain’s most successful and influential bands over the past few years. The band’s latest studio effort, A Kiss For The Whole World, has even granted the group their first ever number one album and garnered both critical and popular praise. On the back of what has been considerable success, the band have also found themselves at the forefront of important issues facing society and the planet today.

Enter Shikari features notable lyrical content ranging from the political to climate change and has set them apart from their peers in many ways. The band are not just content to speak on social issues either, preferring to take action on what they believe in. Indeed, the band recorded A Kiss For The Whole World using only solar power.

Now, together with St. Albans based media platform Headliner Spacers, the band have now turned their attentions to local site The Pioneer-a venue that helped the band get their start on the music scene. The grassroots venue played a major role for the band upon their formation in the early 2000s, with Enter Shikari promoting many of their earliest performances at the venue. Bring Me The Horizon and Gallows can also count themselves as alumni of The Pioneer.

In addition to music, the venue also features the UK’s oldest indoor skate park. And Enter Shikari are raising funds to not only save The Pioneer but also to make it a premier venue for touring artists as well as a cultural and creative hub complete with rehearsal spaces and recording studio. Thus far, the band have raffled frontman Rou Reynold’s Kaoss Pad, Chris Batten’s bass guitar and guitarist Rory Clewlow’s Gibson SG in order to raise the required funds to take The Pioneer back to its lofty position within the scene.

Surviving multiple threats to its existence, @thepioneerclub in St Albans continues to survive thanks to vital funding from @ENTERSHIKARI.

Headline Spacers has been leading the renovation of the venue with the platform overseeing the construction of the new studio and bar-a result of a partnership with Signature Brew. The platform will begin on the rehearsal space next as well as an education centre for aspiring musicians, crew members and technicians.

Enter Shikari have also released a new T-shirt with proceeds going to The Pioneer. The band have explained that each shirt that is sold will count as one entry to the raffle. Further information about the raffle and T-shirt sales can be found here.

Pendulum recently played a secret show at Reading and Leeds festival, having left clues for festival goers in the days leading up to it, posting flyers with their logo and a phone number printed on them. When the number was dialled, the following message was heard: “Ladies and gentlemen, we understand that you have come tonight to bear witness to the sound of drum and bass. We regret to announce that this is not the case. As instead we come tonight to bring you the sonic recreation of the end of the world. Reading Festival prepare to hold your colour.” After A.M.C ft Phantom’s set on the BBC Radio Dance stage Pendulum’s logo appeared on a video screen along with a countdown and the band emerged to play their first UK show as a full band since 2018.

Toward the end of the set, Enter Shikari’s Rou Reynolds joined them for a performance of his band’s 2007 breakout single, “Sorry You’re Not A Winner.” Reynolds told NME how the project came about telling the magazine, “Gareth [McGrillen] and Rob [Swire] just got in touch and basically said that they’re thinking about doing a remix of ‘Sorry You’re Not A Winner’, and I was like ‘okay sick!’, what a surreal message to get.” Reynolds continued, “They sent it over, and there’s a lot of different demo changes in that track so I was like ‘this is so interesting, what are they going to do with it?’ And it’s so good. It’s killer.”

Asked about rehearsing the tune with Pendulum, Reynolds added, “Because sub-bass works better at certain frequencies they’ve had to raise the key of track. And you know, this track came out in 2007, I wrote it in 2003, so I could perhaps reach those high notes a little better, and they’ve raised it another tone, tone and a half, so it’s up there. So I’m hoping I have some vocal chords left after our own set to destroy with Pendulum.” Luckily for Reynolds Enter Shikari’s show was cut short leaving him ready for the challenge.

Pendulum most recently released the 2021 four-track EP “Elementa”, their first since 2010’s “Immersion.” As of yet the Brixton show is the only performance the band have announced.

05/03/2023 – 02 Brixton Academy – London

Yesterday Enter Shikari were performing on the Main Stage East of the festival when a power failure forced them to cut their set short and leave the stage. The band were unable to return and finish their set because of the tight schedule of bands set to perform after them. The band was abruptly pulled off the stage following Reynolds’ passionate speech about polluting water firms like Thames Water, leading many fans on social media to speculate that this was done on purpose rather than due to a genuine power outage.

I find this quite hard to believe considering it was the only power outage of the whole day.
This morning the rumours swirling on social media that the power outage was an of censorship, one Twitter user saying, “I find this quite hard to believe considering it was the only power outage of the whole day. And Thames Water being corporate partners of the festival….”.

In his Twitter post this morning, Reynolds addressed the situation, saying, “Just to clarify everyone – it wasn’t an act of censorship, it was a power outage at front-of-house. Immense bad luck, and of course bad timing.” He went on, “We then had our set cut as the power cut pushed our set over our allotted time slot. Frustrating as hell but the festival has to keep to the timetable understandably, to stop stampedes in between stages. We had a fucking blast though. Big up everyone at [Reading]. Love only.”

About ten minutes after his first tweet, the musician added in another tweet, “Regardless of the power cut pause, I still got to berate Thames Water & other polluting water companies in front of thousands of people, + thousands more watching back on BBC. So even if it had been an attempt at censorship it was a poor one as I still got to finish the speech.”

Luckily for Enter Shikari fans, Reynolds joined Australian electronic, hard rock band Pendulum on the Dance Stage during their secret set to perform the Enter Shikari song ‘Sorry You’re Not A Winner’ (watch the performance above). The band had left clues to their secret set by posting flyers with their logo and a phone number printed on them. When dialled, you heard the following message: “Ladies and gentlemen, we understand that you have come tonight to bear witness to the sound of drum and bass. We regret to announce that this is not the case. As instead we come tonight to bring you the sonic recreation of the end of the world. Reading Festival prepare to hold your colour.”

Earlier this month, Enter Shikari teamed up with London electronic rock duo Wargasm to release the single “The Void Stares Back”, the band’s first since their 2020 single “The Great Unknown” from their UK number two album Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible.

The Reading Festival closes today with performances from The 1975, Halsey and Charli XCX.

This is the St Alban’s musician’s first release since the single “The Great Unknown” from their UK number two album Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible; an album that NME gave four out of five stars and said that it: “brings together every shape that Enter Shikari have ever pulled and slots them together to create their most definitive album yet. It’s a crash course in their unruly genius and all their best tricks – a Greatest Hits waiting for you to learn the words”.

“The Void Stares Back” sees the band teaming up with London electronic rock duo Wargasm producing some of their most electrifying and compelling work yet. In a statement released for the song, the band say the single “spins a startling pop sensibility into a haymaker chorus, that erupts to champion acceptance, community, belonging and the power of progress. It’s about staking your claim, being who you are, searching for like-minds and ushering out the antiquated views of old”. Have a listen below.

Lead singer and keyboardist for the band, Rou Reynolds, added in the statement for the release, “It is with elation, and more than a little nervousness, that we release this; our first track after over two years of dormancy. It is a roisterous journey made all the more so with the addition of our friends Wargasm”. Reynolds continued, “Thematically, the piece is about the forward march of social progress, and how, often, those with a more conventional archaic outlook on sexuality, gender, social design, economics etc, see those with differing ideas like bewildering, depraved creatures from another dimension”.

Wargasm are one of the hottest up-and-coming young bands (Jonathon Davis of Korn has said they are his favourite new band), and they are set to release their first full-length album EXPLICIT: THE MIXXXTAPE on September 9th, to pre-order click here. Talking to NME back in June about the upcoming release Sam Matlock said, “The mixtape is less about being catchy and having good, refined songwriting, It’s more about fucking about and seeing how it feels”.

On teaming up with Enter Shikari, the duo said in a statement, “Shikari were a big part of our growing up, so it was an absolute honour to be asked to collaborate with such an incredible and well-spoken band. They stand for the right things – we’re a little more pessimistic. It was fun playing the darker devil’s advocate to Rou’s light…where we’re going, you won’t need eyes to see…”.
