Scottish rock band Primal Scream have launched their new single ‘Deep Dark Waters’ ahead of their forthcoming album release in November, a moody track which offers up the band’s ominous take on current affairs and politics.

The band spoke of the foreboding message of the song in a post on Instagram accompanying the song’s release, saying: “Deep Dark Waters is influenced by the writings of Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi. It contains a warning from history. Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.”

The band drums up a sense of foreboding in the tune, channelling elements of classic horror movie soundtracks and joins them together with singer Bobby Gillespie’s eerie, detached vocals. The single begins with a sparse arrangement, with distorted, reverberating pedal notes on the low end while shrill strings tremolos bring tension to the atmosphere. The soundscape slowly fills up with dissonant ornamentation from horn-like backing vocals and fluttering synths. You can hear the full track below.

Ahead of the release of the group’s 12th album Come Ahead on November 8, Primal Scream have already released the album’s lead single ‘Love Insurrection’, which is in many ways the opposite of ‘Deep Dark Waters’, being characterised by Stereogum as a “utopian lead single, a funky, string-laden dance track.” The lead single does, however, allow peaks through to some dark undertones, with Gillespie seemingly exhorting the world for a “new direction”, showing that the lyrical themes and sound of the band’s latest material call back to their 200 album XTRMNTR, a politically charged, industrial rock statement.

Formed in 1982 in Glasgow by Gillespie and Jim Beattie, Primal Scream have grown into veterans of the UK alternative rock scene. Initially part of the mid-1980s indie pop wave, the band soon evolved, embracing psychedelic and garage rock influences. Their breakthrough came with the 1991 album Screamadelica, a genre-defying work that fused rock, dance, and electronic music, earning them the first-ever Mercury Prize. The band’s line-up has seen changes over the years, with Gillespie remaining the constant driving force.

Come Ahead will be the band’s first studio output since 2016’s Chaosmosis, which, in a tone quite unlike the sneak-peaks we’ve got of Come Ahead, was described by Pitchfork as “keeping pace with 21st-century pop” and demonstrating Primal Scream’s “savvy for keeping themselves current.”

Of the band’s current darker, brooding sound and prophetic lyrical sentiments about world affairs on Come Ahead, Gillespie said in a press release: “I’m very excited about this album in a way that you would be making your first record. If there was an overall theme to Come Ahead it might be one of conflict, whether inner or outer. The title is a Glaswegian term. If someone threatens to fight you, you say, “come ahead!” It’s redolent of the indomitable spirit of the Glaswegian, and the album itself shares that aggressive attitude and confidence. They have a word for this up there, gallus. Come Ahead’s quite a cheeky title too.”

This single follows the release of their recent anthem “Bang Ya Head” featuring Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. In addition to amassing 296K Spotify streams and 108K YouTube views for its music video, it has garnered widespread praise.

After touring with Enter Shikari and Limp Bizkit at the end of last year (and into the beginning of this year), Wargasm has recently supported Corey Taylor on his US tour. They have also graced the stages of this year’s Louder Than Life Festival and Aftershock Festival. All of these accomplishments have been achieved in time for their return to the UK, where they will be performing their largest headline shows to date.

On discussing their latest album arrival, Milkie had this to say, “I do not respond well to being rushed. In life generally, but also in the creative process,” laughs Milkie. “It’s been a long time coming for this and I don’t think any of these songs were written in one day.” Sam added to Milkies comments and said, “Everything came together super organically, and I think you can hear that. When you rush people, you can take away the authenticity.”

With a massively successful tour already underway, it is abundantly clear that one Depeche Mode Momento Mori tour is simply not enough. With over 2 million tickets sold, the UK new wave synth-pop group have added an additional European run of dates which will see the tour extend into the new year.

After releasing what is the band’s 15th studio album, the duo comprising Dave Gahan and Martin Gore set out to tour Momento Mori quickly after its release and was met with stunning success and rave reviews. Such has been the response to the tour that the group has decided to add 29 additional dates across the UK, Ireland and Europe-giving fans an extra chance to see one of the UK’s most beloved and successful bands.

Over the course of Depeche Mode’s 40 plus years, the band has sold over 100 million records and toured the world on numerous occasions. One of the most influential bands of their era and beyond, Depeche Mode have had a staggering 54 songs on the UK Singles Charts and 17 top 10 albums in UK charts. Almost an immediate success within the electronic scene in the early 1980s, the band gained international recognition with their smash hit album Violator-a record featuring arguably their best known songs.

Internal divisions shook the lineup with Gahan and Gore emerging from the 90s as the only two original members left. The pair have rarely been deterred however, going on to release critically acclaimed albums, including March’s Momento Mori-an album that has garnered almost universal acclaim. The album’s first single “Ghosts Again” is considered by some as one of the best songs the band has delivered in decades.

And the Momento Mori tour has not failed to live up to the hype that the record has achieved. Sold out performances across North America and Europe, which have included a sold out Twickenham Stadium in London, have met with glowing reviews with The Guardian writing, “Dave Gahan is a mic-spinning, limb-bending theatrical marvel as the band gallop through decades’ worth of hits.”

Depeche Mode have also partnered with luxury Swiss watch making brand Hublot on the Momento Mori tour to further promote the band’s charities. The pair are supporting the Conservation Collective, a global network of foundations which promote grassroots environmental projects and initiatives with a focus on plastic pollution, waste management and environmental cleanups. Additional details on the charity can be found here.

If one thing has remained an incontestable constant in Depeche Mode’s career, it is that their crowd-pleasing triumphant live performances have left audiences desperate for more and with the Momento Mori tour set to continue, the band are giving their fans exactly what they want.

Post-rock band 65daysofstatic have announced that they will be touring the UK and Europe later this year to celebrate the ten year anniversary of their fifth studio album Wild Light.

The tour will feature five UK dates and five European dates, with the UK leg starting at St Luke’s in Glasgow on September 14th and concluding at Chalk in Brighton on the 18th, while the European leg kicks off at La Maroquinerie in Paris on September 21st and rounds off at Hole 44 in Berlin on the 25th.

The entirety of their well-received fifth album Wild Light will be performed in full during the tour, and will be followed by, as mentioned in a press release, a ‘second set of other bits and pieces‘, which may leave fans of the experimental outfit hopeful of new material.

The press release has also stated that the group, best known for combining noise rock, experimental rock and electronic rock throughout their years of existence, has also announced a new project, the so-called Wild Light Decade, that will, in the months leading up to their string of live shows, see the outfit release ‘never heard before‘ recordings that were made during a period between 2010 and 2013 and what is now known as the Wild Light Sessions.

The releasing of these previously unheard recordings will be available on the band’s patreon page on a subscription basis for five pounds a month. The patreon page can be found here.

65daysofstatic were formed in Sheffield in 2001 by instrumentalists Paul Wolinski, Joe Shrewsbury, Rob Jones and Simon Wright, and released their first album, The Fall of Math, in 2004 to widespread favourable reviews. The band’s sound with their debut LP focused on math and noise rock, and this fitting of the post-rock genre continued with two of their subsequent releases, One Time for All Time (2005) and The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007).

With the release of their fourth album, however, in 2010, the band shifted, musically, to a more electronic sound. We Were Exploding Anyway featured more dance elements, including more dance beats and electronic bass and drum tracks. Their fifth and sixth albums (Wild Light, 2013, and replicr, 2019) feature a combination of their earlier post-rock and noise rock sound with the electronica sound inspired in their fourth release.
