Daydreams is the first offering from Easy Lifes’ upcoming album. It will be the first multitrack record from the band since Junk Food, the eclectic mixtape that came out on January 10th. 

An ode to Daydreaming by the late great Aretha Franklin, Easy Life sampled the track for their reworking. According to an official press release, Easy life relayed that Daydreams delves into the 1972 hit, reworking it so it radiates “modern-day escapism.”

And modern-day escapism it is. Easy Life loop Franklin’s opening lines, “Daydreaming and I’m thinking of you”, but with a twist. With added vibey percussion and synthesisers, Daydreams is a lucid take on Franklin’s classic, yet it still sounds unmistakably Easy Life. The lowkey psychedelic piano melody and Murry Matravers’ hypnotic voice accompanies Franklin’s mighty vocals brilliantly, creating a song one can get lost in. 

Murray Matravers, lead vocalist for Easy Life, spoke on Daydreaming. Mutravers meditated upon life since lockdown, stating “like most of us, I’ve spent the whole year sitting at home daydreaming about a possible alternate reality.” 

Mutravers meditated that Daydreams, although it sounds like it, is not wholly romantic. Matravers elaborated, explaining that it was “born out of boredom and idleness…‘Daydreams’ is as much about getting drunk as it is about falling in and out of love.”

This idea certainly appears in the song’s honest chorus. Matravers sings “Daydreaming and I’m thinking of you/Day drinking just for something to do”, pairing alcohol and lovesickness.  Easy Life premiered Daydreams for their 118,000 subscribers via YouTube last night (October 21st). 

The Nightmares hitmakers also took to Instagram today to celebrate the arrival of Daydreams. Posting a snap of the claw machine cover art, the band said of Daydreams: “it’s Annie Mac’s hottest record in the world on radio 1 at 6 pm.” Garnering over 9000 likes, fans rejoiced at Daydreams’ recognition from BBC Radio 1.

Daydreams is the latest offering from Easy Life since who gives a f***? A two-track single, who gives a f***? dropped on July 10th and contains the songs Poptarts and Nightmares. 

In other news, Easy Life are set to make a special appearance on Fraser T Smith’s upcoming album, 12 Questions. Scheduled for arrival tomorrow (October 23rd), musician and producer Fraser T Smith has recruited the likes of Arlo Parks, Stormzy, Idris Elba and Dave. Fraser T Smith will release 12 Questions under the moniker Future Utopia.

Daydreams is out now.

Easy Life announced the news of new material via social media on October 17th. Taking to Instagram, the band captioned the post: “new easy life music on Wednesday”. The post elicited many joyous reactions from Easy Life’s ever-growing fanbase, receiving over 22,000 likes and 284 comments. One fan wrote, “hopefully the album is next!”

Over the past few months, Easy Life shared some sonic Easter eggs via Petty Crime and Peanut Butter from the see you later maybe never demo. They also shared Junk Food, the seven-track mixtape with the tracks 7 Magpies and Dead Celebrities, the intermittent releases amping up fans’ high enthusiasm for Easy Life’s debut album. 

Last month, Easy Life treated fans with a live performance of Nightmares. Easy Life imitated the original music video for Nightmares by playing live from an operating theatre.

The performance was directed by Tommy Davis and premiered on Sunday Brunch via Channel 4 on September 29th. Easy Life shared the music video with its 118,000 subscribers on YouTube. Receiving over 35,000 views, the performance of Nightmares can be watched in full here.

Back in February, Easy Life took home the award for Best New British Act at the NME Awards 2020 for their mixtape Junk Food. NME said of the indie-jazz quintet: “There’s little to prevent Easy Life from becoming Britain’s next big band, from transcending cult word-of-mouth status to become a genuine phenomenon. They’ve got the tunes, the killer live show, and a welcoming sense of community.”

 Easy Life will hit the road in April 2021, where they will play a few gigs across the UK. Easy Life will play shows in both Edinburgh and London.

Easy Life has released 3 mixtapes so far, Creature Habits (2018), Spaceships (2019), and of course, Junk Food. Easy Life was set to perform at the Live At Leeds music festival this year. Live At Leeds was supposed to unfold next month on Saturday, November 28th.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Live At Leeds confirmed its cancellation on September 23rd. In a post to Instagram, Live At Leeds wrote: “it may not come as a great surprise, but it will not be possible to go ahead with Live At Leeds 2020 as planned.”

Easy Life was formed in Leicester in 2017. The alternative band consists of Murray Matravers, Oliver Cassidy, Sam Hewitt, Lewis Alexander Berry and Jordan Birtles. Easy Life is made up of talented multi-instrumentalists, each member jumping between synthesisers, trumpets, percussion, guitar, and vocals.

Organisers of the event made the tough decision to cancel Live At Leeds to align with the new UK government guidelines concerning the ongoing coronavirus crisis. The headline act planned for Live At Leeds 2020 was Mancunian indie-pop band Pale Waves.

Statement regarding Live at Leeds 2020

Additional bands confirmed for Live at Leeds were Brighton band The Magic Gang, alternative group Easy Life and rock band Shame. The Coral and American musician Ezra Furman were also set to play the city festival, where they would each deliver performances from various Leeds music venues.

Within a sorrowful but necessary statement, founders of Live At Leeds said “It may not come as a great surprise, but it will not be possible to go ahead with Live at Leeds 2020 as planned.”

The statement continued with “We’d hoped by moving the festival to the end of the year we stood the best chance we had of going ahead, but with the current guidance it’s now clear that won’t be possible, and certainly wouldn’t be the Live at Leeds experience we’ve all grown to enjoy.”

Organisers of the event also pleaded with music fans to maintain their ongoing support for record stores, music festivals and independent artists, stressing urgently that “they need your support now more than ever.” 

Live At Leeds concluded their statement with a reiteration of the group’s ethos:“Live at Leeds is a labour of love. We run this event to introduce music fans to new talent, to bring people to our city and to support the venues, staff and talented freelancers that operate throughout Leeds.”  The full statement can be accessed here. 

In regards to the event’s return, founders have confirmed that Live At Leeds will commence sometime in 2021. Ticket holders will be able to claim refunds at the point of purchase, as stated on the Live At Leeds official website.

Live At Leeds was established in 2007. Founded to mark the city’s 800th birthday milestone, the music event partnered with both music promotion company Futuresound and Leeds City Council for over a decade. Featured film industries, music industry seminars and around 50 bands playing live in and around the city centre, Live At Leeds has something for every music lover!

In other news, Shame recently shared their comeback single, Alphabet. Manic and punky, Alphabet was released on September 10th. Shame also announced news of a comeback show recently, confirming they will perform at the Electric Brixton in London on April 22nd, 2021.
