After over 50 magical years, US rock supergroup the Eagles have announced plans to retire from the stage after a 3 date farewell tour. This marks their third farewell tour, the (potentially) final chapter of “The Long Goodbye” shows.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, the band historically operated around the founding nucleus of drummer Don Henley and guitarist Glenn Frey. Long-time guitarist Joe Walsh, bassist Randy Meisner, and guitarist Don Felder rounded off their classic lineup which was responsible for 1976 album ‘Hotel California’. Eagles were always known for their uniquely well-rounded talents, with every member contributing lead vocals to various songs, all of them also gifted multi-instrumentalists.

Following internal disputes, Timothy B. Schmidt replaced Meisner, and after a nasty spat with Felder, Frey left the band. The group split in 1980 and all of the members pursued solo careers until they returned in 1994, performing with the same lineup until Felder’s sacking in 2001. Glenn Frey passed in 2016, leaving Henley the only original member still performing with the band. Since then, the Eagles have performed with a roster of Henley, Walsh, Schmidt, guitarist Vince Gill, and occasionally Frey’s son Deacon on guitar.

Eagles have an unrivalled legacy in the world of rock music, inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, as well as receiving 18 Grammy nominations and winning 6. ‘Hotel California’ is regarded as one of the best American rock albums of all time, and ‘Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)’ continues to be one of the most commercially successful albums ever released. In January, the latter, which was already named the best selling album of the 20th century, was announced to be the first album to receive the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) quadruple platinum certification, having sold over 40 million units.

The first attempt at saying farewell came with 2023’s “The Long Goodbye” tour, but by 2024 the Eagles had shown no signs of stopping and began a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere entertainment complex. Now in 2026, the performances at The Sphere are still ongoing, having been extended from the initial 8 show run to a record-breaking 58 nights at the venue. The last dates of their residency are the weekend of the 27th and 28th of March, but as we know with the band this may be subject to change.

Act III of The (really rather) Long Goodbye Tour has been scheduled for the US this May, with three huge stadium concerts. It kicks off in Atlanta, Georgia’s Truist Park on the 5th of May, goes next to Nashville, Tennessee’s FirstBank Stadium on the 9th, with their current final show marked for the 16th at Arlington, Texas’s Globe Life Field. Support comes from Tedeschi Truck Band on all three dates, with tickets available here. As for whether this is really the last we’ll see of them, Don Henley suggests it probably will be. In an interview feature with CBS Sunday Morning earlier this month, he said “You know, I think this year will probably be ‘it’. I’ve said things like that before but I feel like we’re getting toward the end, and that will be fine too.” If this is indeed the end for Henley, Walsh and co. they’ll have certainly made it worth our while for the last half a century. As Henley puts it, if fans want more Eagles after this tour, “I guess they’ll just have to listen to the records.”

Now… this may not come as a shock to anyone, but the last few years have been a real low for performing artists. PRS For Music recently released their annual stats for revenue in 2021, and despite being in total lockdown for 5 months of the year, the public performance sector (which includes music used in business premises, shops, cinemas, pubs, clubs, hotels, and restaurants, as well as the live music sector) still bounced back up 59.6% (£51.4m) from 2020. While this is clearly a great sign of a return to stability, there is still a little way to go; total revenues are still down 38.1% (£84.6m) compared to 2019.

We’ve just released our financial results for 2021.

– £777.1 million collected in music royalties
– £677.2m distributed to rightsholders
– 27 trillion ‘performances’ of music processed

With years of travel restrictions, social distancing, and all the rest of the stuff we had to deal with, it was practically impossible to tour. If anyone was lucky enough to head to a socially distanced show at one of the more relaxed points of the pandemic, then you may have been grateful to finally be seeing something again… but quite a significant chunk of the concert experience just didn’t work. Sit down, stay still, leave in an orderly fashion – it just wasn’t right. This discomfort was reflected in the numbers too, a decline of another 29.2% (£3.3m) from 2020 means that the sector only pulled in £8m after a number of big earners like Elton John, Dua Lipa, and Eagles were all forced to postpone their tours.

In a concluding statement from the CEO of PRS For Music Andrea Czapary Martin, she says, “The 59.6% uplift in public performance is encouraging as it reflects a marketplace, like the economy, that is getting back to business. Significantly, it underlines the organisation’s ability to adapt to all market sectors to fully monetise and protect the value of the music rights entrusted to us. “. So if you’re comfortable with going to these shows, then chances are they’re back and here to stay.

The live industry today seems to be pretty much back to full strength now. If we’re making predictions of what things may look like in the stats next year; I think 2022 may rake in some significant numbers. 2 years of performing artists being cooped up inside means that now pretty much everyone is starting their touring cycle at the same time. In 2021, the total amount of setlists fell from 124,000 in 2019, to 19,300. Take those 100,000 sets and add them to the 124,000-ish that would have happened this year anyway and you’ve got yourself a busy year as a punter.

Legendary Los Angeles rockers Eagles have announced a new support act for their upcoming European Tour, which will include British Summer Time in Hyde Park, London. The tour-which will mark Eagles celebrating fifty years as a band-will also feature stadium shows in Dublin, Liverpool, Edinburgh and the Netherlands.

It has already been announced in weeks prior that the band will be joined on the road by bluegrass-country singer Alison Krauss, and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant. As of today, it has been announced that Little Big Town, an Alabama based country band, will also be accompanying Eagles on their upcoming tour. The group shared a very enthusiastic tweet earlier today to confirm their participation in the tour.

We’ve been DYING to share this news. What a bucket list dream come true. We’re headed to Europe, including HYDE PARK, with The Eagles!!!! Tickets on sale Friday, 11/5. pic.twitter.com/bgnKeki5kZ

— Little Big Town (@littlebigtown) October 29, 2021

Little Big Town are no stranger to touring and commercial success, having formed in 1998 and finding great critical acclaim in the early 2010s, with the song “Pontoon” from their fifth album Tornado winning a Grammy award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. The album has also gone on to achieve a gold certification. The group are still very consistent and prolific with their musical output, having released their ninth full-length album Nightfall last year. The album has received favourable reviews, with some critics likening the group’s sound to that of Fleetwood Mac. The album, along with the rest of their musical catalogue, is available on all streaming services, and physical media can be found here.

For many, Eagles need little introduction. With a career spanning fifty years, six number one albums, five number-one singles and six Grammy Awards, the band have had quite an illustrious career, to say the very least. Eagles are perhaps best known for the rock classic “Hotel California” released in 1977, a Grammy award-winning song adored by millions, and boasts what many regards to be one of the greatest guitar solos of all time.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eagles intended to play in the UK during the Summer of this year with two dates at Wembley Stadium, as a part of their Hotel California tour.

Tickets for the upcoming Hyde Park show will go on sale on Friday, November 5th. Tickets to all of the upcoming shows on their European tour can be found here, and the dates for the tour are listed down below.
