Eagles of Death Metal are not a death metal band and are an American rock band whose band name intends to be one of humour. The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Jesse Hughes who formed the band in 1998 with bandmate Josh Homme (Drums).

Homme’s is also the vocalist and drummer of the rock band Queens of The Stone Age. The band released their debut album Peace, Love, Death Metal on March 23rd 2004. The band’s single “I Only Want You” (2004) released from the album was used for the Playstation 4 game Gran Turismo 4, World Tour Soccer 2006, Guitar Hero World Tour and the launch of Windows 8. Other songs from the album were used for television commercials.

The band’s Christmas EP sees frontman Hughes using his aural alter-ego Boots Electric thus giving the EP electrifying interpretations of Christmas songs. Hughes said of the songs on the EP, “I hope you like them” Hommes instead of Hughes sings lead vocals on the single “O Holy Night” on the EP. The band’s EP is set for release on November 19th and will be available in CD format and all digital formats.

The band are also set to release their first Christmas single from the EP “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” on October 29th and are also set, to embark on the second leg of their 24th Anniversary Tour in March and April. The Tour will see the band perform in both the UK and Europe with their first concert taking place in Brighton on November 22nd. The band’s merchandise will be on sale during their tour and tickets are on sale from October 1st.

Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends), will premier on HBO on February 13, and will recount the story of the attack that saw 89 people killed, and was a part of larger attack around Paris on November 13 2015. The film is directed by Colin Hanks (son of Tom, and star of the Fargo TVseries), and will feature extensive interviews with the band’s members, as well as focusing on Hughes’ close friendship with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme.

Speaking at the documentary’s LA premier on Thursday,  Hughes spoke of the immense difficult he had in returning to such a tragic night,admitting that “There is nothing easy about this. But that doesn’t matter.”

Homme also spoke on the documentary, saying that he felt the project was “important” for the grieving process of those involved, elaborating “When Colin started mentioning that he felt it should be captured — that it had an importance — it was a surprise to me. It’s hard to take a compliment about something like this.”

Whilst not attempting to try to understand the scope of the tragedy,  Homme did at least see the documentary as a way of exploring the events, stating that “It would have been a shame if the punctuation of this events was just violence and body count. [The documentary] doesn’t explain anything, but it was worth a shot.” You can watch the final trailer for Nos Amis below. 

According to a Billboard source, the band will join U2 on stage on December 6th at Paris’ AccorHotels Arena and they will recommence their European tour in February 2016. Josh Homme, member of Eagles Of Death Metal was not present at the Bataclan attack but will reportedly be at the U2 gig.

U2 frontman Bono stated recently that he bought the band members new phones and offered them use of his private jet in the aftermath of the incident. In an interview with The New York Times, he stated: “We had a plane, which we put at the Eagles’ use if they wanted it, but they found another way. The best thing we could do for our fellow musicians was to buy them phones. I spoke to Julian [Dorio] and to Jesse [Hughes]. But that was the best thing, Jesse said, just getting the phones to be texting and all the stuff that you do — social media — to find out what’s going on. Their phones were in the venue.”

This week on Jesse Hughes latest episode of his Alligator Hour radio show on Beats 1 he was joined by fellow band member Josh Homme where the pair played the Deen Ween Group’s cover of their popular track “I Love You All The Time”, after Homme called out to musicians to cover their song as “a sign of solidarity” following the unfortunate events at the Bataclan terror attacks last month. They proceeded to end the show by holding a moment of silence before playing Jeff Buckley’s angelic “Hallelujah”.

Since then the band have remained silent, only breaking it today with a statement addressing the tragic events. The statement explained how the band were “Still trying to come to terms” with what happened, with the band paying tribute to Nick Alexander and all the label staff killed. It also confirmed the band are cancelling all forthcoming shows.

The statement reads: “While the band is now home safe, we are horrified and still trying to come to terms with what happened in France. Our thoughts and hearts are first and foremost with our brother Nick Alexander, our record company comrades Thomas Ayad, Marie Mosser, and Manu Perez, and all the friends and fans whose lives were taken in Paris, as well as their friends, families, and loved ones.

This follows a campaign to get Eagles of Death Metal to number one, to show solidarity with the victims of the horrific Paris attacks last week. at least 132 people were killed in the attacks, with the Bataclan –  where Eagle of Death Metal were playing – being the worst hit, with around 350 people injured and 87 killed.

The campaign selected the band’s cover of Duran Duran’s ‘Save A Prayer’ with an aim to get the song to number one as a way of showing “solidarity against terrorism and support for peace”. The song is currently seated at no.44 in the UK according to The Official Charts, jumping 52 places in a day.

Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon, who wrote the original song, announced the pledge via twitter saying “@EODMforNo1 @DuranDuran will donate all proceeds due to us, from this version. Considering options that are useful, peaceful & uniting.”

One of the victims was Nick Alexander, 36 from Essex, the merch seller for Eagles of Death Metal, and the first Briton confirmed dead after the attacks.

“It is with huge sorrow that we can confirm that our beloved Nick lost his life at the Bataclan last night,” the family said in a statement. “Nick was not just our brother, son and uncle, he was everyone’s best friend – generous, funny and fiercely loyal.

“Nick died doing the job he loved and we take great comfort in knowing how much he was cherished by his friends around the world. Thank you for your thoughts and respect for our family at this difficult time. Peace and light.”

It has been confirmed that all the members of Eagles of Death Metal are safe, as are their support act Red Lemons, who said in a statement on Instagram: “Guys… I don’t know what to say. We’re more than lucky…

“Thinking about those who passed away and who were having such a love time & happiness with all of us just a minute before…”

Deftones were also in the crowd during the gig, as they were set to start a three day stint at the venue, but were reported to have left before the shootings started. The posted a statement on their Facebook saying: “Thank for all your inquiries on our well being. Band/Crew all safe and accounted for at this time. Prayers for those affected in these tragic events.”
