Edinburgh based electronic music extraordinaire Eyes of Others has put out a new single today, “Once, Twice, Thrice“, as part of a series of releases in anticipation of the release of his debut self-titled album next month.

The track is the third part of a trilogy of songs and music videos that will be found on Eyes of Others, with the debut album scheduled to be released on May 19th. The first song and music video, “New Hair New Me“, was released on February 28th, while the second, “Big Companies Large Tentacles”, came out on March 27th.

Watch the music video for “Once, Twice, Thrice” below:

This will be the first chance Eyes of Others will have to showcase his astonishing talent and love of different music genres. These three teaser tracks alone incorporate a hugely diverse set of sounds that will undoubtedly leave his listeners mesmerised and blissfully dizzied. “New Hair New Me” brings with it elements of indie, psychedelic and folk rock, combining joyful and hopeful lyrics with an uplifting energy.

“Big Companies Large Tentacles“, conversely, contains a different kind of energy with its abstract lyrics accompanied by a gritty, darker, Suicide-esque dub/techno sound. The track suddenly transforms with vibrant electricity towards the end with a spray of energetic acid techno, before returning once more to base.

“Once, Twice, Thrice“, the album opener, returns to positivity with its upbeat loops, dreamy vocals, and sounds of a psychedelic nature lurking in the background.

The artist behind Eyes of Others is John Bryden, who has been using the moniker since 2017 and the release of his first track “I See You in the Shrubs“. Prior to this, he had been in various bands, toiling away without much success. He thus decided to pursue a solo career, seeing music, as stated by his bandcamp biography, as a vehicle of freedom and a “space for expressing yourself”, and the extent of this new-found musical freedom is extravagantly illustrated within his genre-breaking debut LP. He describes his music as “post-pub couldn’t get in the club music”, thereby effectively confirming his contentment with his place in the music world and the freedom said place allows him to enjoy.

Listen to “I See You in the Shrubs” below:

Pre-order Eyes of Others now here.

Dubstep pioneers Skream and Benga excited dub fans worldwide by announcing that they are to join forces once more in the coming year. For the first time in over two decades, the two artists are to collaborate to create new music, their last collaborative effort being ‘The Judgement’ all the way back in 2003.

The announcement came on Twitter, with Skream, real name Oliver Jones, saying “The boys are back in town…. Skream X / 2.0….. 2022 we’re having it.” This announcement came to the delight of many a dubstep fan, as these two are formidable pioneering forces within the scene whose solo careers have exploded since the duos last venture.

However, Skream has made it clear that this is no walk down memory lane, or a revivification of dubstep’s golden years. Skream explicitly stated on his Instagram, “No throw back, brand new music only”.

Skream is set to have a busy year, with a New Zealand tour on the way, as well as dropping a new Soundcloud mix titled ‘Skream Plastic People mix’ that can be listened to below. The mix, seemingly unlike the new project with Benga, revels in the happy memories of old school dub, featuring absolute classics such as Mala’s “Anti War Dub”, Burial’s “Archangel”, and Benga’s very own “Amnesia”, among other classic Skream tracks tossed into the mix.

Benga, real name Benga Adejumo, on the otherhand, has had a relatively quiet one in recent years. His last single was in 2018, now approaching four years ago, and his last full-length album was released in 2013, with nothing on his Soundcloud in the way of tracks or mixes. We can only hope that this new collaboration will provide fertile ground for Benga to come back into the popular consciousness, which Skream has enjoyed the privilege of being part of for what is close to two decades.

Skream has expanded into a more mainstream dance audience, with his remix of La Roux’s ‘Going in for the Kill’ becoming a basic standard for any student club DJ in the UK for the last half-decade or so. Even La Roux herself was highly appreciative of the rework: “It showed that people don’t want mindless happy crap,” she told NME in 2010. “They want something that makes them feel and that remix really does. Skream did an amazing job, thank you again and again.”

No dates have been set for the release of any material but Skream has already said on his Twitter that two tracks have presently been recorded.

London-based dub gang Gentleman’s Dub Club shared a brand new track ‘Honey’ featuring vocals from British reggae singer Hollie Cook. The track premiered today on all digital platforms via Easy Star Records and followed the release of ‘Castles in the Sky‘ from last November as the second piece of new music since the band’s latest record Lost In Space from January 2019. The single has already got some airtime on BBC Radio 6 and 1Xtra, alongside various radio, press and podcast appearances by Gentlemen’s Dub Club in recent weeks.

‘Honey‘ is a gentle piece of modern dub perfectly blending the dub outfit’s signature style and Cook’s smooth singing, stripped down to an almost acoustic version, focusing on relaxing melodies and vocal harmonies. The track acts as the logical continuation of ‘Castles in the Sky‘ that kickstarted their new album cycle and captured “the overall sonic direction of the new work, while showing off how the band continues to grow musically with each new creation“.

Continuing the successful partnership with the New York-based reggae and dub label Easy Star Records since joining in 2015 for their fourth album The Big Smoke, Gentleman’s Dub Club are steadily working on new music and upcoming album. ‘Honey‘ is produced by Toby Davies, also responsible for bass, keyboards and backing vocals for the band, and features Holly Cook and Jonathan Scratchley’s gentle vocal collaboration and instrumentation by Davies, Luke Allwood on keyboards, Nicholas Tyson on guitar and Matthew Roberts on trumpet. As previously stated by the band, they collaborated with Ben McKone, their long-term friend and drummer for General Roots.

The track is yet to see an official video premiere, but features an exclusive single artwork designed by Artwork By Blondie very much in the style of the previous work for ‘Castles in the Sky‘ as well as her independent projects.
With more news and updates to follow, Gentleman’s Dub Club’s upcoming album will be their sixth full-lenght release following their formation in Leeds back in 2006 and their debut EPs Members Only (2009) and Open Your Eyes (2012). The energetic gang, widely known for their infectious live performances and unique blend of genres and influences, produced their first LP FOURtyFOUR in 2013, before signing for Easy Star Records for the subsequent The Big Smoke (2015), Dubtopia (2017) and Lost In Space (2019). In addition, in 2018 the band teamed up with The Nextmen for the critically acclaimed Pound For Pound.

‘Honey‘ is yet another chapter in Hollie Cook’s ongoing and fruitful partnership with Gentleman’s Dub Club, having previously appeared on ‘Spooky‘ from Pound For Pound (2018) and frequently joining them for live stream performances. The daughter of Sex Pistols’ drummer Paul Cook, she was also involved with The Slits, as well as pursuing a side career and passionately blending reggae, dub and post-punk sensibilities. As a solo artist Hollie Cook has already released her self-titled debut from 2011, its 2014 follow-up Twice and the latest Vessel of Love from 2018.
