Le Tigre have announced huge support acts for their first tour in eighteen years. The band will be embarking on a twenty-eight date tour in May, with three dates in the United Kingdom. The tour was first announced in January (below) with twenty-four dates, but four more were added after many sold out.

In the UK, the band will be supported by a variety of great acts.

In London on the 3rd of June, they will be joined by Dream Wife, an indie/punk/pop-rock three-piece from Brighton. The trio posted on their official Instagram their excitement. Along with their kind words in the post below, they captioned it saying that they are “So excited & honoured” and posted a photo of them, saying the “pic is us in Bella’s uni bedroom probably listening to Le Tigre around the time we started Dream Wife.” They cite Le Tigre, and more specifically, lead singer Kathleen Hanna, as a clear influence.

For both the Manchester and the Glasgow show, the band will be joined by Problem Patterns.

Problem Patterns are a DIY feminist queer-punk band, hailing from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They posted on Instagram, as seen below, saying “This is not a drill. We’re opening for the legendary @letigreworld this June at BOTH their Manchester and Glasgow dates! Words can’t express our excitement and gratitude. We all already bought tickets and it’s a dream come true that we get to play on these shows instead. Tickets are on sale now! These are our biggest shows to date and it would mean the world to see some familiar faces!”

Kathleen Hanna herself once said that she loves the band Problem Patterns “because they make weird music for right now that sounds like no one else and I am addicted.”

Other acts supporting them across the rest of their tour include Shamir, Morgan and the Organ Donors, Claud, Big Joanie, MAN ON MAN, Chicks on Speed, Pom Pom Squad, Who is She?, Erin Markey, cumgirl8, Morgan Bassichis & HYD.

Following the break up of riot girl-band Bikini Kill in 1998, lead singer Kathleen Hanna formed Le Tigre with Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning. Benning shortly left in 2000 and was replaced by JD Samson. Their website says they “formed as an obstinately hopeful, even joyous, post-riot grrrl project in New York City in 1999—when Rudy Giuliani was mayor and regressive hipster irony (à la VICE Magazine) ruled.”

They first signed to Mr. Lady Records, an independent San Francisco lesbian-feminist record label. The band have released three albums in their 25-year run; self-titled album Le Tigre in 1999, Feminist Sweepstakes in 2000, and This Island in 2004. The band last played at This Aint No Picnic festival last year, after having a 17-year long break from live shows.

Tickets for the shows can be found on the bands offical website here.

UK tour dates:

03/06/2023 – Troxy – London

05/06 – Albert Hall – Manchester

06/06 – Barrowland Ballroom – Glasgow

In the absence of live music currently due to Covid-19, Dream Wife have announced that they will be releasing a live album, consisting of nine tracks from their last live show back in January 2020. Aptly titled ‘IRL (Live In London 2020)’, the album is due for release on 20th November and was recorded at the band’s performance at Peckham Audio in London.

Posting to their social media, Dream Wife surprised fans on Tuesday (10th November) with the news. They also wrote a heartfelt message which detailed their experience throughout 2020 and their plans for the future, which include touring the UK in April 2021. They said, “Kicking off this year we imagined 2020 to be seriously getting back to touring, to playing shows, to letting these songs live. But… 2020 has not been what anyone expected it to be.”

Surprise: DREAM WIFE IRL (Live in London 2020) comes out November 20th. Our first live album

Continuing, the post reads, “We can’t wait to commune with you IRL, at the rock show; to share sweat & joy & rage & grief & energy and love. But for now, we offer you a snapshot of our only rock show of 2020. That was one hell of a show. We offer you a bite of that energy, rawness & connection captured digitally.”

‘IRL’ will be available exclusively on vinyl from Rough Trade Records and, in further news, it will feature an unreleased song ‘Cheap Thrills’ which has previously only been heard live. The new single is out now as a teaser for the album, showcasing some incredible live vocals from lead singer Rakel Mjöll as well as classic punk guitar and drums from instrumentalists Alice Go and Bella Podpadec.

Dream Wife was formed in 2014, when the three members met at university in Brighton, though London is now home for the band. They shared their debut EP in 2016 before signing with current record label Lucky Number Music. Since then, they have released a self-titled studio album and played shows around the world thanks to their loyal fan-base.

Check out the full track-list for ‘IRL (Live In London)’ below.

1. ‘Hey Heartbreaker’
2. ‘So When You Gonna…’
3. ‘Hasta La Vista’
4. ‘Cheap Thrills’
5. ‘Somebody’
6. ‘Kids’
7. ‘Sports!’

Anonymous British music collective Sault have topped Rough Trade’s 2020 Albums of the Year List with Untitled (Black Is), the first of two politically-charged double-albums released by the enigmatic group this year. Rough Trade, the UK label that is traditionally first out of the blocks with its Top 100 Albums of the Year list, describe Sault’s record – which pipped Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher to the top spot – as “an album that delivers equal parts grace and charge, manoeuvring through disparate sub-genres to create a magnificent medley of exaltation.” They add: “Rarely has there been an artistic statement this stirring, this staggering, this powerful.”

This year has not been an easy one. However, it has certainly underlined the importance of music and the role it has to play to unite us, heal us and make the hard times more bearable.

These are our favourite albums for 2020 x#RTTop100https://t.co/wxjLOSljGa

— Rough Trade (@RoughTrade) November 10, 2020

Precious little is known about Sault’s origins and make-up other than a handful of credited guest appearances; including Mercury Prize winner Michael Kiwanuka and Laurette Josiah on Untitled (Black Is). What is certain is that they are a prolific bunch. The Guardian highlighted this neatly in their review of Untitled (Rise), the September successor to Black Is.

They wrote: “Sault seem to use the time they save by not promoting their albums or engaging with the public profitably. ‘Untitled (Rise)’ is not only their fourth album in 18 months, it’s their second double album in just over 12 weeks. It’s a work rate that would seem remarkable at any point in pop history, but feels positively astonishing today, compounded by the fact that its predecessor gave the impression of having been largely written and recorded in response to the murder of George Floyd, less than a month before it was released.”

British-Japanese singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama comes in third on the Rough Trade list with her first full studio album Sawayama, which the label describe as “a giant megazord of monster pop, built to defeat the drab mundanity destroying our lives“. In a statement shared by Pitchfork earlier this year, the London-based artist described the album as “…about understanding yourself in the context of two opposing cultures (for me British and Japanese), what “belonging” means when home is an evolving concept, figuring out where you sit comfortably within and awkwardly outside of stereotypes, and ultimately trying to be ok with just being you, warts and all.”

Also featuring in the Rough Trade top 5 are Laura Marling’s seventh album Song For Our Daughter, which Rough Trade describe as the folk singer’s “most tranquil, clear and idyllic to date“; and Beyond The Pale, the debut LP from Jarvis Cocker’s latest musical incarnation Jarv Is… In the absence of live shows, the Pulp frontman recently announced a cinematic tour of the new record which is scheduled to begin next week.

The other UK-based acts featuring in the top 10 spots in Rough Trade’s list are Anglo-Icelandic punk-pop trio Dream Wife with their sophomore album So When You Gonna…; Geordie Rockers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (aka Pigs x7) with their third record Visceral; Hull ‘gothic shoegaze’ merchants Bdrmm with Bedroom; and Brighton quartet Porridge Radio with Every Bad, which Rough Trade praise for its “searing riffs and melodic incantations“.

Elsewhere there are nods in the Top 100 for Manic Street Preachers frontman and guitar hero James Dean Bradfield; Leicester indie-pop veterans Cornershop; Wembley-born Hollywood star and hip-hop artist Riz Ahmed; and Welsh electronicsongstress Kelly Lee Owens. The full list of Rough Trade’s Albums Of The Year 2020 (from 100-1) is as follows:

Deezer have shared InVersions, an exclusive covers album full of completely iconic hits by some of the hottest new artists in the world. In a bid to invest a little energy into the new music scene, during this difficult moment, Deezer contacted a string of exciting and diverse new artists and asked them to put their take on any classic track they fancied. Everything was recorded in isolation and the result, InVersions, dropped today (October 6), exclusive to Deezer.

Among the line-up are Fontaines D.C., with a slow, melancholic cover of The Beach Boys’ ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’. The Beach Boys sometimes have that effect where in completely the right mood they’re perfect – otherwise they’re kind of sickening. Not this cover. The last four lines, which tend to just fade into outro in the original, are haunting. You can catch a clip of it here:

This is what they had to say about it: “Covering a Beach Boys song has always been a scary thing considering the genius arrangements, their playing, their harmonies, everything about it … So ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ we saw this kind of naive perspective towards love and marriage in the lyrics, and we were quite curious to see what would happen when you contrasted that approach with a darker musical palette. So we kind of slowed down the tempo and created a draggier tune for those lyrics to sit on top of.”

A cover is an art form, there’s no doubt about that, and it’s always struck me as a great way to really get to know a band. What Fontaines D.C. say above, for example, shows just how much they understand their industry, and their craft. Perhaps Deezer picked the line-up for InVersions for exactly this reason.

InVersions also presents Arlo Parks’ first song in French: ‘Ta Reine’ by Angèle. Parks explains why this is so special: “I picked ‘Ta Reine’ by Angèle because I find her voice completely mesmerising and soft, and I feel like the topic the song discusses is very important. I’ve always wanted to sing in French since my mum is French and I’m generally just enthralled by this song and her delivery. I hope I can do it justice.”

Really there is nothing to distinguish one moment from another – all of these covers are spectacular. For me, other honourable mentions go towards Alfie Templeman’s ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’, which retains the feel of the original while simultaneously softening everything. It perfectly suits the style that Templeman is really making his own.

Likewise, Orla Gartland’s ‘Nothing Compares to You’ is ambitious – intriguingly, her powerful voice seems to be set against a Radiohead-inspired, subtly electronic take on the melody. When the music falls away for the final refrain, Gartland shows nothing but pure talent.

But, for me, Dream Wife’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ steals the show. It has all the chills of the first time you heard it. It absolutely puts a spotlight on why we all unexpectedly fell in love with Robyn in 2010. This is not because it’s a carbon copy, though; Dream Wife retain all of the best of Robyn’s original, while giving it a spin of their own. If you listen closely, you catch an endearing whisper of “in a galaxy far far far away” just before the bridge.

InVersions could not be more exciting as a music project, but it also feels like a positive force in these bleak times for the music industry. Nigel Harding, who is Deezer’s VP of Global Artist Marketing, explained the thinking behind InVersions. “We all know the music community has been hit hard by the pandemic, especially Indie artists who rely on live gigs. During this tough time, we wanted to do our part and offer support to Indie and Alternative artists with our new Inversions album … I’d love for music fans from all over the world to discover some new favourites on our InVersions album.”

You can stream it here.

Deer Shed Festival has confirmed its eleven edition, which will be held for three days from July 30 to August 1. It also revealed its exciting line-up that features James, Stereolab, Baxter Dury. Tickets are on sale now via its official site.

After being forced to take a pause this year due to the horrific outbreak of coronavirus, the North Yorkshire festival has promised its return to give exuberance to all festival goers in 2021. The organisers have now unveiled the rescheduled dates, which will take place on July 30 – August 1 at the site of Topcliffe village.

Accompanying the announcement of new dates, the festival also shared the names of wide-ranging artists who will perform. Leading the bill, Manchester rock band James will make a comeback there. According to Harrogate Informer, festival director Oliver Jones expressed supreme excitement for booking the “Sit Down” hitmaker to play, which reads:

“There’s no doubt james are one of the biggest bands we’ve ever booked for deer shed. Their back catalogue is astonishing, with track after track of excellent guitar anthems, and their most recent album confirmed that they are still at the absolute top of their game. I’m not sure we’ve ever had a band that can pack out leeds first direct arena before!”

He continued, “Curating a line-up of artists that we personally love every year is always a source of much pride for our team, and James now sit on top of what we think is both the best and most star-studded music bill we’ve ever put together.”

What’s more intriguing: Slowdrive’s Rachel Goswell and her husband Steve Clarke will bring their brand-new project The Soft Cavalry to the Lodge Stage on Saturday. Meanwhile, other indie icons like Dowdelin, Marthagunn, and Low Hummer will rock out on the In the Dock Stage.

Importantly, critic-beloved punk band Dream Wife appears in the bill. They will definitely slay the stage with songs from their second album ‘So When You Gonna…‘.

Deer Shed Festival started by the hands of couple Oliver Jones and Kate Webster, who intended to host a family-friendly festival. The first edition was held back in 2010 with 1,000 attendees in a one-day line-up, but now Deer Shed has been increasingly successful, expanding into a three-day festival that accommodates about 10,000 goers.

The festival also wholeheartedly welcomes camping enthusiasts and live-in vehicles, together with other highlights such as comedy shows, DJ sets, live podcasts, and many more. Visit here for more information and ticket purchase.

Punk rock trio Dream Wife has finally shared the second studio album titled ‘So When You Gonna…‘. The album is a follow-up to 2018’s highly-praised self-title debut, led by hard-hitting single “Sport!“, “Hasta La Vista“, and the title track.

It is high time for the UK indie scene to rejoice once again, as the critic-beloved indie band Dream Wife has returned with their second effort, and it is better than ever! ‘So When You Gonna…‘ is the title of their latest offering that the members promised to use as a challenge to gender imbalance in the music industry.

“The album was recorded with a full team of women. Female producers are less than 5% in the industry. It was a real eye-opener working with this team, and they’re incredible,” the group talked with Annie Mac at Radio 1 back in March. Accordingly, they picked Marta Salogni, a rising producer who has worked many acclaimed artists with the likes of FKA twigs, Björk, and Frank Ocean.

Guitarist Alice Go told Dork about the band’s experience working with Salogni: “It felt like a really important thing for this [record] to be produced by Marta and this incredible team of women.” Go affirmed that working with an all-female production team for ‘So When You Gonna…‘ was “a real practicing-what-we-preach situation.”

‘So When You Gonna…‘ includes eleven tracks that blend music from the indie and alternative spectrums, resulting in a head-banging collection of punk rock bangers that overflow with female empowerment and defy prevalent male domination. “Sport!” led the album’s roll-out, with its screaming and kicking melody infused with a series of unapologetic cursing and daring the listeners to “put your money where your mouth is.”

So far, the album has received widespread rave from leading music critics. Legendary NME gave four stars to ‘So When You Gonna…‘, calling it “the swagger of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the sneer of riot grrrl“; meanwhile, The Irish Times deemed the record filled with “an intoxicating mix of trashy fun and insightful commentary.”

Apart from releasing new music, the London-based trio also launched their own podcast dubbed as same as the sophomore full-length. The ‘So When You Gonna…‘ podcast has seen the ladies of Dream Wife invite a host of female rebellious fellows, such as The Big Moon’s Soph Nathan, Adele Slater, Girli, and many more.

‘So When You Gonna…‘ the album is out now for streaming and purchase via Lucky Number Music. Visit their official site for the merchandise and 2021 tour information.

Only announcing the song yesterday in a nonchalant Instagram post, Dream Wife’s lead singer Rakel Mjöll surprised fans with the news. Today, in a more serious post, the trio let fans know that the song was out, saying “New song alert: Temporary,” before revealing that all proceeds from digital Bandcamp pre-orders will be donated to Black Minds Matter and Gendered Intelligence. After explaining each organisation’s work, the statement closed with the message: “We also encourage you to directly donate, our trans sisters need our support more than ever now.”

According the members of Dream Wife – Rakel Mjöll (lead vocals), Alice Go (guitar, backing vocals), and Bella Podpadec (bass, backing vocals) – ‘Temporary’ is about “having hope through waves of difficulties, and was written for a friend who went through multiple miscarriages and is now pregnant again.” A topic which is rarely discussed by the media, the group said that they felt it was “important to speak.”

The emotional single has been shown great support from fans, who are grateful that the band are speaking out about important subjects which many people experience. The song varies from Dream Wife’s usual sound, showcasing MJöll’s soft vocals, and a clean and steady electric guitar doubled by the bass, as well as simple drums, making the music very fitting with the heart-felt lyrics.

The album’s lead single ‘Sports!’ came out in March, along with a colourful music video which has gained over 30,000 views. Following this was ‘Hasta La Vista’ and title track ‘So When You Gonna…’, both of which also received music videos – followers should keep a look out for the ‘Temporary’ music video.

The band are planning to take their sophomore album on tour in 2021, kicking off in Oxford on 14th April and travelling across the UK and Europe until the end of May. Tickets can be found on their website.
