Since all summer live shows have been cancelled due to the coronavirus, artists and festival organisers are having to find new ways to bring music to their fans. We have seen this happen in various ways, from Zoom gigs to Instagram live-streams, and now, online festival broadcasts. Following in the footsteps of Glastonbury, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and Together At Home, Download festival will take place virtually this weekend, 12-14th June.

Viewers were ecstatic to hear that headliners include KISS, Iron Maiden, and System Of A Down, all of whom were originally set to play. The performances will combine new footage with old fan favourites, with special content from Biffy Clyro, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, and The Pretty Reckless.

Not only will there be incredible music, but also exclusive interviews with bands, cooking demonstrations, pub quizzes, yoga, and more. Since the broadcast will be continuing as normal, viewers are encouraged to “pitch your tents, roll out your sleeping bags, and get ready for a weekend of music, special interviews, unseen performances, and exclusive footage, all broadcast live to your home from 12th-14th June.”

The event has been dubbed Download TV and will be streaming around the world on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch. Sets will not be available to watch after their allotted times, so fans should follow the Instagram page for when to tune in. Although there is no cost to watch, a fundraiser has been set up in aid of NHS charities – supporters can donate here.

Initially, Download 2020 was to be held in Donington at the weekend, but was cancelled on 26th March due to coronavirus concerns. While it won’t be seen to go ahead fully this year, tickets for 2021 will go on sale this Friday, 12th June, as the virtual shows kick off. The line-up is yet to be confirmed, but by completing a simple survey, fans can vote for their favourite acts. Furthermore, those who take part are in with a chance to win two VIP Weekend Camping Tickets.
