Descendents played at one of the final shows of fellow punk band NOFX in October and haven’t released an album since 2021 when they came out with “9th & Walnut”. They were set to perform across Europe last year, but had to cancel in July 2023 after the lead singer Milo Aukerman had a mild heart attack for which he had to undergo surgery.

Meanwhile, Circle Jerks haven’t released an album since 1995 when they came out with “Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities”.

Descendents are an American punk rock band formed in 1977, hailing from Manhattan Beach, California. Originally a power pop band, they returned as a hardcore punk band in 1979 after Milo Aukerman joined as lead singer. He has since become the face of the band. Other current members are Bill Stevenson, Karl Alvarez, and Stephen Egerton. Former members include Tony Lombardo, Ray Cooper, Doug Carrion, David Nolte, and Frank Navetta who sadly passed away in 2008, aged 48. The group have released fourteen albums, three of which were live and another three were compilations. The group have also put out four EPs. Some of their most popular songs include “Ride the Wild”, “It’s a Hectic World”, and “Like the Way I Know”.   

Circle Jerks are an American hardcore punk band formed in Hermosa Beach, California, 1979. The band was formed by Kieth Morris, a former vocalist for Black Flag, and former Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson. The two founders remain as current members along with Zander Schloss and Joey Castillo. The group has disbanded and reformed multiple times, with members working in other bands. Nonetheless the group still has quite a long discography, including six studio albums, one compilation and a live album, their most recent release being “Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities”. Some of their most notable songs are “Wild in the Streets”, “Rock House” and “Live Fast Die Young”.

Both groups are highly influential in their field, having been an influence on some of the biggest bands in the genre such as Blink-182. The tour is a co-headlining tour between the two with band Negative Approach as the opening act. They were formed a little later than the headlining acts in 1981, though they too broke up just two years after debut and reunited in 2006.

This latest song may seem quite reminiscent of their early days as Billy Stevenson the bands’ drummer noted that the track was “One of the very first Descendents songs, written in 1977, by (founding member) David Nolte, about how living in Hermosa Beach made him feel like a freak.” 

In 2002, the original line-up of bassist Tony Lombardo, drummer Bill Stevenson, guitarist Frank Navetta, and vocalist Milo Aukerman entered the studio to finally record the album. However unfortunately they failed to complete it before Navatta died in 2008. It was then more recently revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone, that, Stevenson sent the 2002 recordings to Aukerman, who recorded his vocals at home before sending them back to Stevenson to mix it.

The 18-track result became “9^th & Walnut”, which was named after their Long Beach practice space back in the day. This latest release features the bands’ earliest material written from 1977 through 1980. You can pre-order the album here.
