Today The Cure announced on Twitter the release of a 1990 demo of “Cut“, which will be included on their upcoming Wish 30th-anniversary reissue. The special deluxe edition of the band’s ninth studio album, which was announced last month, will be released on October 7th through UMC/Fiction/Polydor. The special edition will have four songs that are appearing for the first time on CD and digital platforms, as well as 24 previously unreleased tracks, including instrumentals, rare 12″ mixes, and demos. You can pre-order the special edition here.

The band had already released “Uyea Sound” from the 30th-anniversary reissue, a song that had up until now only been available on their 1993 Lost Wishes cassette, following it up today with the demo of “Cut” to promote the upcoming release. The track was recorded during the demo sessions for Wish at Farmyard Studios in the Cotswolds. NME reported the band’s frontman Robert Smith’s thoughts on the song, “[It] was about a longstanding relationship I had that was suddenly and unexpectedly starting to fracture.” Watch the official lyric video for the demo below.

Talking to NME this may Smith confirmed that the reissue project for Wish was pretty much complete, saying: “I’ve just finished doing the ‘Wish’ remaster, and there are so many of Simon’s [Gallup’s, bassist] demos that never got past the demo stage and remained instrumental – purely because I couldn’t think of any words for them. That’s really sad because some of them were really great!” Smith continued: “They’re all coming out as instrumentals, and I think there are about 36 unreleased songs coming out on the package. That’s the same every time we do anything. There’s always loads of music, and a lot of it is Simon’s. I just run out of words!”

On revisiting the album in 2022, he said, “There’s a side to the album which I had kind of forgotten, a very gentle, yearning thing which is quite beautiful.” Smith went on, “‘Trust’ is one of the best things we’ve ever done I think, it’s played with great feeling, and ‘To Wish Impossible Things’ is another gorgeous, melancholic piece… in fact it could well be my favourite song on the record.”

Wish was originally released in 1992, reaching Number One on the UK charts and Number Two on the US Billboard 200. The record has the singles “High”, “A letter To Elise”, and one of their most well-known songs, “Friday I’m In Love”, which reached number six on the UK charts.

Talking at the BandLab NME Awards 2022 back in March, Smith told NME that their much-anticipated new album will be called Songs Of A Lost World, explaining, “It’s got artwork, it’s got a running order, it’s almost done! They’re so slow because of vinyl, but it might come in September. I’d rather it just came out. I can’t stand the anticipation.” In May he confirmed with the magazine, “We will be playing from October and the new album will be out before then”.

The Cure will be touring UK and Ireland this December, dates are below and tickets are available here.

The band from Cardiff are celebrating their latest string of 10th anniversaries, as their third and fourth albums pass the special milestone. Romance is Boring and Hello Sadness was released in 2010 and 2011 respectively, and the band are celebrating by producing limited vinyl reissues of both, alongside a number of other treats for dedicated fans.

The Romance is Boring reissue was first announced back in 2019 and will be pressed on gold vinyl, with only 1,500 copies available for fans. A special digital download card will also be accompanying it, containing their 2010 four-song EP All’s Well that Ends. Pre-orders (which can be made on the band’s website here) will also get you a special copy of ‘The Universe Replied’: An Oral History of Romance is Boring, a 35,000-word zine giving interviews with past and current members talking about the process of making the album and touring it.

As for the Hello Sadness reissue, it will be accompanied by new artwork and will be pressed on transparent blue vinyl, with only 1,000 copies being made. The reissues are due next February 18th courtesy of Arts & Crafts. A band statement concerning the reissues said “Since its original release the band’s membership has changed, beloved venues have closed, we are all far older and more jaded. But Hello Sadness still hurts. ‘The Black Bird, The Dark Slope’ swirls desperately, ‘Every Defeat a Divorce (Three Lions)’ serves as a reminder of the dust gathering thicker in the England men’s football team’s trophy cabinet, and we, Los Campesinos!’s ‘sad eyed children’, still hang on their every word.”

The band’s never been shy of showing their sentimental side for past works, having done reissues for the tenth anniversary of their first two albums back in 2018, for 2008’s Hold on Now, Youngster… and We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. This was accompanied by a two-week tour. Last year they celebrated the anniversary of Romance is Boring with a reissue on Valentine’s Day, as well as two London concerts where they played the album all the way through. Also, the release of their latest EP back in May, Whole Damn Body, featured songs recorded around the time of Hello Sadness, seeing the band continuing to make this into an event for the fans.

To help fans eager to join them live to celebrate, last September they announced three dates where they would be playing around the UK, seeing Cardiff, London and Leeds from the 13th to the 15th of December. Suffice to say, the band seem to be on a roll at the moment. And fans have plenty more to look forward to, with lead vocalist Gareth Paisey admitting they were working on a new album. Also, the tenth anniversary of their fifth album No Blues (2013) is coming up in a couple of years, so it seems they won’t be short of things to celebrate just yet. So if you want a bit of the action, better get ordering now!
