Death Blooms, the chaotic voice of reason, realized “Shut Up” earlier this year. But now, they are back with an incredible reimagining of their instant classic. Working alongside them is the creative Wargasm. This was in order to give an “updated perspective”.  They had this to say of their feature: “We just wanted to echo and add our weight to Paul’s sentiment. The planet is on fire, the air is filthy, everyone treats each other like shit and I think we would all kill for some silence…”. The new version of the song has been met with an over great response. Especially, after Wargasm’s first Reading and Leeds festival just last weekend.

The band will be joining Blood Youth on a tour in the UK this September. Visiting some of the best venues the UK has to offer, from Bournemouth to Brighton. Earlier last year, Death Blooms announced they signed for the independent label Adventure Cat, a division of KMGMT who have been involved with the likes of Neck Deep, Tonight Alive, Creeper, As It Is, and many more. Following the news, the Liverpool dropped the furious tirade ‘Life Is Pain‘, with frontman Paul Barrow talking about the track: “This song, as with many of our songs, looks at the daily struggle. We, as a species, experience many things: pain is something we all know only too well”. 

Back then Death Blooms hinted at a debut full-lenght album on the pipeline but with the chaos and delays of 2020, an album is currently expected later this year, hoping for an official announcement soon. In August 2020, the band dropped the second promotional single ‘Anger‘, building on the momentum and making a clear statement with their raging blend of nostalgic early nu-metal mayhem and modern post-hardcore charge. Steadily making a name as one of the most exciting rising UK bands, Death Blooms recently got the attention of Radio 1 and MTV Rocks’ very own Jack Saunders:

“They’re another spawn of Slipknot, without a doubt. Seeing a post-hardcore band in a small venue, the sound needs to be really abrasive yet coherent and engaging at the same time, and they absolutely smashed it. Their lead singer’s voice is unreal, too – they’ve got the whole package. It’s early days with them, but there’s potential for them to break through. I’m a big fan.”

Since their formation not too long ago, Death Blooms have dropped two self-produced 4-track EPs – Death Blooms (2017) and You Are Filth (2019), before signing to Adventure Cat and building a solid foundation for a hugely awaited debut album. Undoubtedly a band to keep an eye for, and one with magnetic stage presence, it would have been an even bigger year for the Liverpool outfit if it wasn’t for the ongoing government restriction on live event.

Back in November, as we were slowly adapting to the new world of online gigging, Knotfest started their new Pulse Of The Maggots virtual festival delivering the most promising acts from across the globe and rightfuly including Death Blooms. Making the absolute most of their 20-minute “festival” slot, the post-hardcore outfit delivered a memorable mini set, boldly standing out from the crowd with their performances of ‘Life Is Pain‘, ‘Sick‘, ‘Filth‘, ‘Crosses‘ and ‘Anger‘, available to catch up here.

Despite the chaos surrounding pre-Christmas tier systems, curfews and constantly changing guidelines, Death Blooms managed to sneak a few socially distanced shows in London’s New Cross In supporting Wargasm UK and reminding us once again how much we all miss live gigs. The New Cross Inn in South East London re-opened yesterday with their full run of festive December events going ahead. The venue operates with limited capacity of people seated in their households or bubbles, provides table service and sanitising stations, and currently accepts only card payments. Thanks to the Music Venue Trust‘s support and determination, as of yesterday all Tier 2 music venues “have been made exempt from the requirement of a substantial meal to serve alcohol“.

Established only a year ago after a random encounter between Milkie Way and Sam Matlok, rising London duo Wargams has rightfully been getting a lot of attention this year. Delivering an explosive genre-bending mix of metal, punk and rap, they were named as one of the 5 artists you should know by Revolver in June, and were selected as one of the special guests to perform at the 2020 Heavy Music Awards. Wargasm’s debut EP Lapdance / Gold Gold Gold came out in February this year, followed by the explosive single ‘Spit.‘ in June and ‘Backyard Bastards‘ in September. Just a week ago, the duo premiered their latest chaotic video for yet another rebellious new track ‘Rage All Over‘.

Earlier in November, both Wargasm and Death Blooms represented the UK alongside Hacktivist and October Ends on the inaugural virtual Pulse of The Maggots festival organised by Knotfest in support of rising metal bands from across the world. The London newcomers opened for the symbolic main Rock Against Racism stage followed by Introtyl, Scarlet, dEMOTIONAL, Vended, Orbit Culture and Hacktivist themselves, while Death Blooms performed at the MusiCares stage with Once Awake, Thrown Into Exile, I Revolt, 156/Silence, Death Tour, VCTMS and Diamond Construct, with their full sets available to watch online.

Death Blooms have been building their reputations for few years now with a distinctive mashup of oldschool nu metal and hardcore attitude, and hailed by Louder for “packing more punches than a team-up against Thanos” and really standing out in the contemporary scene “unlike the legions of wannabe nu metal messiahs out there“. Following a debut self-title EP from 2017 and 4 killer singles from 2019, the Liverpool quartet returned this year with two brand new tracks ‘Life Is Pain‘ and ‘Anger‘ building on the momentum and looking ready for a solid first album soon.

The team-up of Wargasm and Death Blooms promises an explosive celebration of contemporary UK metal with a nostalgic nu/alternative metal twist and unforgettable hardcore/punk energy. On top of all that, this appears to be one of the few gigs to go ahead this year and a fantastic chance to attend a performance by two of the hottest rising bands in the UK, and ones to be talked about in the future.

The virtual festival will take place and three separate digital stages, supported by the MusiCares charity, the Rock Against Racism initiative and the global guitar manufacturer ESP and is set to highlight the “top prospects from the various subgenres of aggressive music” from around the world. The event will start at 8pm GMT on 13 November and will run throughout the night with the main ESP stage starting at 1:30am on 14 November, all streamed exclusively at Knotfest.com.

Waving the UK flag from the virtual headline slot are Milton Keynes grime metal outfit Hacktivist that recently announced new material in production and a killer collaboration with Dropout Kings coming out in December, and might perform some fresh music next Friday. Joining them for Pulse of the Maggots Festival are Newcastle metalcore 4-piece October Ends fresh off releasing their debut album Zodiac on 30 October, Wargasm UK who recently dropped the shocking video ‘Backyard Bastards‘, and rising Liverpool nu metal/hardcore band Death Blooms. 

On the international front, Pennsylvania quartet Tallah are sure to bring the heat up with their raw mix of energetic nu metal and relentless contemporary metalcore. One of the more curious acts on the bill are Vended, formed by the sons of Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan, and set to carry on the legacy of their fathers. The original Knotfest was created in 2012 by SlipKnot for two exclusive shows in Iowa and Wisonsin, USA for a unique horror circus and dark carnival experience in celebration of their music and the relevant bands of the day. The inaugural event saw Deftones, Serj Tankian, Machine Head, Lamb of God, Gojira, Dillinger Escape Plan and Cannibal Corpse join forces with SlipKnot and establish the iconic festival that would later expand to Japan, Mexico, Colombia, France and Canada, and was expected to also hit the UK this summer but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The new virtual festival for fresh metal music bands Pulse of the Maggots takes its name from the track off SlipKnot’s third studio record Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) from 2004. The song has become an anthem for the band’s fans and is a fitting title for a festival set to showcase the raw talent of young metal acts from across the world.
