Dani Filth, vocalist and frontman of the Suffolk-born extreme metal band Cradle of Filth let his guard down at Download festival this year by proposing to his girlfriend Sofiya Belousova live on stage.

The self described “lyricist, writer, scarecrow” interrupted his band’s performance at the Dogtooth stage on Saturday 14 June to call to the crowd, “I want to beg a few minutes of your time. This is really fucking important, at least for me. I’m gonna embarrass my partner now. Sofiya, come out here.”. A cloaked figure appeared bearing the ring which he wittingly announced came “all the way from Mordor”. The crowd in hysterics, Filth began with apprehension as he asked, “Sofiya, love of my life, my queen. Will you….”

Belousova said yes immediately, and the band celebrated the life-changing moment with ‘Malignant Perfection’, a romantic march of glory from their latest album ‘The Screaming Of The Valkyries’.

Watch the moving live proposal here.

Filth revealed in an interview with Metal Sucks, that the proposal was a surprise to not only the crowd, but his friends and family, as he says, “Nobody knew about it. I forgot to tell the band, and my family, including my mum, who was here. So, I quickly had to let them know, as they were watching from the side of the stage as well.”.

The metal singer went on to share his nerves for the occasion, as he considered when the proposal should be, though ultimately he thought, “I’m going to kick myself if I don’t do it at such a prestigious event.’ But, then it’s also like, ‘fuck, this could go horribly wrong.’ As in, she could say no, or the audience could go, ‘play another song, get on with it.”

Fortunately the proposal went off without a hitch, as fans found the live proclamation of love to be a very sweet moment.

Love has definitely been in the air for the band, as guitarist Marek “Ashok” Smerda and keyboardist Zoe Federoff got married earlier this year in Tucson, Ariz. Filth told Full Metal Jackie at Loudwire, “it’s a sure sign that things are going well in the band and we all attended. It was brilliant.”

Cradle of Filth’s Download performance was full of surprises, as the band had a close call with pyrotechnics. Filth explained the theatrical malfunction with Metal Sucks, saying “The pyro turned up 10 minutes before we went on, which normally is a no-go, but we were like ‘fuck no, we want this.’ But [they] hadn’t mapped out any of the safety areas. It’s supposed to be 5 feet [away], but it was about a foot. I cinched my eyebrows at one point”. One fan captured these moments on TikTok captioning, “CRADLE OF FILTH WAS LITERALLY ON FIRE”.

Dani Filth, frontman of English metal band Cradle of Filth, has once again revealed his anti-streaming sentiment during a recent interview with Sonic Perspectives. In the interview, Filth discussed Cradle of Filth’s upcoming LP ‘The Screaming of the Valkyries’ set to be released on March 21 via Napalm Records, following the release of their latest track ‘To Live Deliciously’.

When divulging into the group’s continued prominence in the metal scene, the conversation quickly transpired into the frontman’s perspective of music streaming services ruining the culture and consumption of music. Filth contextualised his opinion by referring to his own music collection and how much consumption had changed since the band’s emergence in 1991. The frontman stated: “Speaking for myself, I always saw radio the same way back in the 90s, and so I ended up amassing a personal collection of about 2000 CDs. And I miss the days when there were physical charts… But nowadays it’s like a fuc**ng free-for-all.”

Filth’s comments also alerted to the ideal that consumption and streaming culture varied from genre to genre. In doing so, he admired consumers of metal for being “loyal” and avoiding streaming services, which has subsequently allowed the metal scene to remain “intact”.

It appears the ‘Nymphetamine Fix’ vocalist’s frustrations stem from the suspected underpaying of artists by streaming services, arguably devaluing their art and making music a financially insufficient career. Filth refers to the aftermath of the pandemic: “And I know so many people from big bands that since the pandemic have gone, ‘You know what, I’m taking a proper job. So you’ll see me less often, we’ll still be doing albums, but probably once every five years’. And it’s because, music it’s just seen like daylight robbery.”

He continued to argue that there’s a heightened entitlement when it comes to music that doesn’t exist with other commodities. Filth compared the culture surrounding streaming to an individual entering a supermarket and helping themselves to produce for free. Inferring the outrage that would rise out of this audacity wouldn’t be present when music is concerned as it isn’t physically perceived in the same way. Therefore, the lack of physicality in streaming music portrays the media as a free-for-all.

This isn’t the first time Daniel Lloyd Davey, known professionally as Dani Filth, has openly slammed music streaming platforms. Back in 2023, he referred to Spotify as “the biggest criminals in the world” over their monetary practices, after revealing Cradle of Filth had 26 million plays the year prior, while the frontman “got about 20 pounds”.

Perhaps Filth isn’t the only person to share this mindset. After all, 2024 saw the first increase in physical music in 20 years. The Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) found the consumption of CDs and vinyl were at a new high, following a new culture of collecting physical media.

Cradle Of Filth, purveyors of gothic inspired black/symphonic metal, will be travelling through Europe beginning in February of 2024 on the Necromantic Fantasies Tour. Active for over 20 years, it may come as a surprise to many that the band have yet to grace certain stages throughout the continent, including Turkey, where the band will be performing for the first time.

Cradle Of Filth frontman Dani Filth said of the tour, “we are so looking forward to performing at all these extraordinary places on this tour – it will be our first time playing in Turkey, can you believe it?” In the company of two great bands – Wednesday 13 and Sick N’ Beautiful – the anticipation for some riotous performances is running very high across the Baltics, the Balkans and Eastern Europe. So prepare yourselves for a night never to be forgotten, one of maleficent spectacle and debauch! You have been warned! See you early next year fellow Filthlings.”
Notable for their shock rock stage presence, Cradle Of Filth have broken into more mainstream avenues in recent years, receiving attention from some of the scene’s most high profile outlets. With the release of 2021’s Existence Is Futile, the band have even begun to garner success-the likes of which was perhaps unreachable for an extreme metal act in years gone by. Wednesday 13 has stated he will be playing a selection of hits from the band’s debut album, Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls as well as a few selections off of the band’s final album Women And Children Last.

Cradle of Filth’s Dani Filth has labelled music streaming platform Spotify criminals as the singer laments the current state of the music industry. Spotify have, in the past, drawn controversy and criticism over its monetary practices regarding bands.

Cradle Of Filth’s Dani Filth: “Spotify are the biggest criminals in the world…we had 26 million plays last year and I got about 20 pounds” https://t.co/GHG2Pady5M

— Metal Hammer (@MetalHammer) June 19, 2023

Spotify has become the method of choice for many music listeners, as the app’s relative ease of access and low expense make it a preferable place to keep music collections close at hand. This has not however, prevented the company from drawing criticism- especially from bands concerning how the app pays musicians for their work and how it allegedly gives preferential treatment to AI generated songs.

Dani Filth is having none of it, citing the digital age for a lot of bands either not making it at all or succumbing to the pressures that streaming places on many. Speaking about the industry in the modern era, Filth said, “it’s been deteriorating ever since…I think 2006 was the year that everything swapped from being comfortable for musicians-well, not necessarily comfortable, it was never comfortable. But [it went to] just being a lot harder with the onset of the digital age, the onset of music streaming platforms that don’t pay anybody.”

Arguably, and Filth certainly does point out, that the music industry has never been a necessarily friendly place for musicians. Prior to the digital boom, record companies often found themselves on the sharp ends of artist’s opinions, with many musicians even opting to form their own independent labels over the past few decades, to give artists more creative control over their projects.

Filth particularly reserved ire for Spotify who he says cheats artists out of a wage, claiming, “I think we had 25, 26 million plays last year, and I think personally I got about 20 pounds, which is less than an hourly work rate…I think people just have this amazing ability to [believe] that when you have stuff out there, like physical product, that you’re earning a fortune from it. They don’t realise you have so many people taking pieces of the pie…”

He also argued his belief that the post-pandemic and cost of living crisis has deterred many bands from touring-the expense just not worth it. With the ability to download music, many artists face not getting paid for their work, or at least not what they may deserve.

Filth has certainly opened up the floor to an interesting debate and one that will surely rage on, with almost everyone involved having an opinion. With more and more musicians looking to maximise their worth, who can tell what the future holds for the industry.

Last year, Cradle of Filth released new song “She is a Fire,” in anticipation of the release of their live album Trouble and their Double Lives. The band are currently working on what will be their 14th studio album.

Demonic outfit CRADLE OF FILTH is proud to release an extraordinary new video, accompanying their magnificently mournful track “How Many Tears To Nurture A Rose?”. The video premiered last night as part of CRADLE OF FILTH’s Infernal Vernal Equinox Deadstream, and now fans all across the globe can also bask in its sublime black magick.

Directed by Vicente Cordero, the stunning video winds a haunting tale – sinister, alluring, and deadly. But he that dares not grasp the thorn, should never crave the rose… Infamous front-man Dani Filth stated: “This is yet another great video by director Vicente Cordero, encapsulating the occult essence of the song’s lyricism with great sweeping colourful strokes of total batshit-craziness.” Adding, “It really makes for frightening, yet strangely compelling viewing!” You can watch the video below.

The gates of hell opened once again in 2021, revealing CRADLE OF FILTH’s 13th manifesto Existence Is Futile. Pieced together in isolation at Grindstone Studios in Suffolk with studio guru Scott Atkins, the record is a pitch-black, perverse and at times absurdly brutal masterpiece, based around the concept of existentialism.

Diehard fans were thrilled to learn that horror icon Doug ‘Pinhead’ Bradley made a welcome return, lending his dulcet tones to the band’s most politically astute song to date, the epic “Suffer Our Dominion” as well as the album bonus track “Sisters Of The Mist“, which is the conclusion to the “Her Ghost In The Fog” trilogy, started over 20 years ago on the infamous and classic Midian.

Belched from Hell’s depths into the rustic charms of the Witch County, Suffolk, thirty long and disturbing years ago, CRADLE OF FILTH are undisputed giants of the heavy metal realm. Imperious purveyors of a perennially unique strain of dark, dastardly, and wilfully extreme metal, with deep roots in the worlds of gothic horror and occult curiosity, the band led by Dani Filth has weathered three decades of tumult and trial, earning a formidable reputation as both a singular creative force and one of the most riotously entertaining live bands the metal world has ever produced.

the band have also booked themselves for a lengthy US tour set to begin this May, and while there is not yet an official stint of dates here in the UK, the summer festival circuit may be able to satisfy your needs. With an appearance at Durham’s Dominion Festival on July 29th, the tease of UK dates could reveal more soon. See here for full information on the band’s tour.

Cradle Of Filth has not released a new album, except for ‘re-mistressed’ of the version of Cruelty And The Beast (2019), since 2017’s victorian epic Cryptoriana- The Seductiveness Of Decay. Now back with Hellish Existence Is Futile, Cradle Of Filth have created one of their most apocalyptic albums to date. Suffolks black-metal icons have masterminded one of their most aggressive albums since Midian (2000), inspired by the state of 2020’s chaos. As Dani Filth, the frontman described the album to Kerrang!: “The threat of everything. The end of the world, the end of one’s life, existential dread.”. Almost 30 years behind them, Cradle Of Filth have created some of the most iconic albums in the industry, but none as bloodthirsty as this.

Since 1994’s The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh, the gothic group Cradle Of Filth has been remodelling what it means to be an extreme metal band. Their “Crawling King Choas” and “Necromantic Fantasies” stand out in the 14 track setlist, as some of Cradle Of Filth’s most powerful pieces of writing to date. With hints of havoc like that of Godspeed On The Devils Thunder (2008) and Nymphetamine (2004). It would be interesting to think what the cast of BBC’s 1998 documentary about Cradle Of Filth’s “Devilish” influence, Living With The Enemy, would say about this album.

Suffolk-own Cradle Of Filth has released some of the most innovative black/extreme metal, including Dusk and Her Embrace (1996), Midian (2000), and Godspeed On The Devil’s Thunder (2008). They have created some of the most exciting concept albums ever since they started changing the metal landscape in 1991. The band infused victorian’s gothic aesthetic while they bring the huge rise in Norwegian black metal to the UK. Bloodstock saw Cradle Of Filth bring in the new era of COF as they approach the newest album in their firey back catalogue.

Performing across the states with 3Teeth and Once Human, Lustmord and Tourgasm- which has seen Cradle Of Filth play their 1998 classic Cruelty and the Beast in its entirety, plus a lengthy encore of hits. We wish both bands a speedy recovery. The tour is following through Dallas on the 1st of October to Monterey on the 29th. They were scheduled to play New York City on the 11th alongside their supports, but due to unforeseen circumstances, both bands tested positivity for COVID-19.

The tour is to continue as normal, with no reference to either band dropping out or whether or not replacements will be brought in. After a quiet 2020, Cradle Of Filth must be desperate to hit the stage.

Cradle Of Filth’s new album Existence Is Futile is due to release on the 22nd of October. The Singles “Crawling King Choas” and “Necromantic Fantasies” have shown the world that their 13th studio album is going to be an incredible feat for the band.

Cradle Of Filth will be playing the album for the first time on their special Halloween show, All Hallows Eve. It is set for Sunday the 31st of October in Camden’s Roundhouse. Dani described the event as: “an iconic venue, an iconic setlist, All Hallow’s Eve in London… six highly-strung extreme metal musicians. What could possibly go wrong?!“.

This is set after they come off of their leg of American shows, and we hope that given the news of COVID-19 affecting their supporting acts, the show goes ahead as scheduled.

Dani Filth the lead singer of heavy metal band Cradle Of Filth has hinted at a possible future collaboration with Ed Sheeran after the singer-songwriter revealed that he was “really into death metal as a kid”.

Sheeran made these comments during a recent interview with the Sun where he stated that he’d “never thought about” taking his own music in that direction of metal. Although, it was “something I would not be opposed to creating”.

Now, Filth has revealed that the unlikely collaborators have been in contact with one another. He told Kerrang! Radio backstage at Bloodstock Festival 2021 that “I’ve actually been emailing with him,”

It turns out there’s actually a grain of truth in the rumours that @CradleofFilth might be working with @edsheeran…@iamsophiek caught up with Dani Filth backstage at @BLOODSTOCKFEST and got the full lowdown.https://t.co/BGfygP0Whh

— Kerrang! Radio (@KerrangRadio) August 14, 2021

The host Sophie K jokingly questioned his sincerity to which he insisted “No no, it’s true! He actually touched base with me. I’ve been invited up to his place. Well, he said he could come down to mine, but I pointed out to him that I don’t own my own bar or village, and it’d be better if I went there. He said he’d do anything. Quite literally. He said he’s a massive fan. He seems like a genuinely very nice guy actually.”

He continued “I think the Ed Sheeran collaboration would be great fun. I think it’d be great if we did it for charity because at least it would bring a bit of credibility to it. Because obviously to his public, it’d be like ‘Oh my god, he’s got this weird comical guy’, and to my public, it’d be like ‘Oh my god, this is a bit weird, isn’t it?’ But I think that sort of thing, nowadays, works.”

Filth at first responded to Sheeran’s comments about potentially stepping into the metal world last month by saying: “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Though he then added, “Fellow Suffolk lad could come good in the end, Dracula’s Castle On The Hill’ anyone?”
