British rock band Bring Me The Horizon shared their unexpected metallic cover of Oasis’s Britpop classic ‘Wonderwall’ this January. The song made its live debut at The Summer of Becoming show in Cologne on 4 June, and fans went nuts for it.

The song featured on the setlist for the band’s show at Cologne Palladium. Introducing the song, frontman Oli Sykes shared his excitement with the audience, hyping them up for a heavy rendition of a British classic as he called out, “This is going to be the first time we’ve ever played it in front of a live audience. Be kind to us. If you know the words, sing as loud as you can and help us out. Ready to have some fun?”

Fans recorded the cover’s exciting debut performance.

‘Wonderwall’, from the 1995 album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory’ has had a number of standout covers from the likes of Ryan Adams and Brad Mehldau Trio. Though, none have reimagined the indie song with such metallic gaul as Bring Me The Horizon. Liam Gallagher responded to the band’s cover for Spotify Singles in a tweet where he says, “I fucking LOVE it”.

I fucking LOVE it

The response took the band by surprise, who spoke to NME at the Brit Awards this year about the cover. Drummer Matt Nicholls said, “We were expecting [Liam] to absolutely rinse us,” Sykes went on to say “We always usually cover stuff that no one has ever heard of, so we were like ‘Now let’s try to reimagine something that everyone knows. Make it easy for ourselves’. Here he references their lesser known covers such as John Murphy’s ‘In A House – In A Heartbeat’ and Anhonie’s heart wrenching indie track from 2016 ‘Drone Bomb Me’. The band covered Anhonie’s track in 2019 with an electric metal-pop rendition in the style of ‘Amo’, their most recent album at the time. The Sheffield-born rock band followed the Cologne Palladium show with an electrifying first ever performance at one of Europe’s largest rock festivals at the Nürburgring racetrack, Rock Am Ring. Moments after the performance, fans were already posting their favourite moments of the show on social media.

In a full circle moment, The Zutons have released a cover of Amy Winehouse’s track “Back to Black”. Winehouse and producer Mark Ronson famously covered the bands song “Valerie” in 2007, with their Motown influenced version becoming a global hit. This new cover from The Zutons was born from a Live Lounge performance where they played their original version of “Valerie”, as well as their own rendition of “Back to Black”, a more stripped-down arrangement featuring breakbeat drums, indie instrumentation and softer vocals. Their take on the Winehouse hit was so well received, they decided to record and release it officially.

One of their most well-known tunes, the indie anthem “Valerie” was written while the Zutons were touring in Florida, after frontman Dave McCabe met a makeup artist named Valerie Star, who was undergoing legal troubles, referenced in the lyrics “Did you have to go to jail? Put your house up for sale? Did you get a good lawyer?”

On producing the seminal Winehouse cover, Mark Ronson told The Guardian “Valerie was a song Amy loved whenever they played it at her local. We cut a slowed-down version that got the cool, Stonesy swagger. But just as we were packing up, I said: “Guys, you’ll want to kill me, but could we do just another version with a Motown backbeat?”

Speaking with The Independent, Singer McCabe recalls meeting Amy for the first time at a house party in Camden – upon telling a drunken guest to stop bothering him, Amy jumped to the defence of the hanger-on, who was her friend. Both McCabe and Winehouse told each other to “f**k off”, with McAbe storming out of the party, before realizing he had no way to get back home.

Amy then ran out of the party after McCabe, telling him “Come back! I love that song “Valerie”! I didn’t realise it was you who wrote that!’ They then went back to the party on better terms, and the next thing they know Amy had made a cover of their song.

Similarly to Winehouse, the Zutons singer has been in the throes of substance abuse – now sober, he attributes his bands inactivity partly to his former habits: “I was in a world of drug addiction, basically – for a f***ing long time! I had a lot of fun. But then, you know, it got the better of me. And it wasn’t fun anymore. And I started to realise I couldn’t really function outside of that.”

Winehouse and Ronson’s version of “Valerie” was an international hit, reaching the top 40 in multiple countries. When Winehouse passed in 2011, the song caught a second wind of success – McCabe remembers people tastelessly texting him money emojis upon the news of her untimely demise.

The Zutons are currently on tour supporting singer-songwriter Paul Heaton and have their own UK headline tour scheduled for spring. Tickets are available here.

American singer-songwriter Sophia Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy, has shared her take on the iconic 2002 Sheryl Crow song “Soak Up The Sun”. Allison, who is currently on tour in support of her critically acclaimed album Sometimes, Forever, recorded the cover in recognition of an artist she deems a major influence. In an interview with The New York Times, the singer voiced her admiration for Crow:

“She has so many songs that are these massive hits that, at least for someone my age, you can’t have grown up and not heard those songs. She has a knack for saying something hard, but making it feel like she’s ready to acknowledge it and be cool with this hard acceptance.”

Listen to Soccer Mommy’s cover of “Soak Up The Sun” below:

Allison, however, is also a brilliant songwriter in her own right. The 26-year-old, who was introduced to the guitar at age six, began posting songs as Soccer Mommy in 2015, before landing a recording contract with Fat Possum. In 2017, she dropped out of college to pursue a full-time music career and has gone on to release three albums, the most recent of which was named one of the best albums of 2023 by the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Stereogum, and more.

The Line Of Best Fit described Sometimes, Forever as “an astounding artistic accomplishment that deserves to propel Allison to the very highest ranks of the indie world”, while The New Yorker pronounced the record Soccer Mommy’s “gnarliest and most resplendent, fashioning poppy melodies, disarming lyrics, and twisted sounds into dismayed songs of young adulthood.”

The Daniel Lopatin-produced album sees Allison explore new sonic landscapes, including shoegaze and industrial noise, cementing her status as one of the most gifted songwriters making rock music right now. Once again, the singer taps into the turn-of-the-millenium sensibilities and confessional lyricism she’s known for, this time inspired by the idea that neither sorrow nor happiness is eternal. Sometimes, Forever is a glimpse into the mind of an artist who synthesizes everything — retro sounds, personal tumult, the relatable disorder of modern life — into original music that feels built to last a long time.

In 2022, following the release of the album, Allison completed a largely sold-out international headline tour and hosted Roblox’s most successful Listening Party to date with 10.8 million unique visitors.

There is nothing more nostalgic than listening back to the bands you grew up with. It’s even more nostalgic when two of those bands get together to cover one of their songs. This took place just a few days ago at the O2 Arena in London. During a Paramore live show, Hayley Williams and Kele Okereke came together to cover Bloc Party’s song “Blue Light“.

The British rock band, Bloc Party, was formed in the 90’s and has a hold on many hearts that grew up in the 00’s. The American rock band Paramore is also one of those bands, formed in 2004 and securing the sound everyone loves from that era.

Kele Okereke came on stage during Paramore’s live show to play a stripped back version of the Bloc Party song. Hayley Williams, the lead singer of the American band, expressed her love for the group and are, to this day, still a great influence on her music; “Bloc Party has been a huge influence on Paramore since we were little kids, you know? Picking up guitars and writing songs for the first time. And we’ve grown up with this band, the same way that a lot of you have grown up with us and probably have grown up with Bloc Party as well. So it only feels right to sing a song together that I used to cry to in my car. And maybe we can all cry together.

The performance turned out to be a very emotional one. Combining Williams angelic voice and Okereke’s unmistakable tone, the outcome created an enthralling harmony and a beautiful version of the song. Their fans feedback was a very welcomed one.

Paramore are currently on tour. Having just finished visiting UK cities, they will be returning to the states. Their next gig is on the 19th of May at the Hangout Music Festival in Alabama. They will be touring their way through until August. Their final destination being in St Paul, Minnesota playing at the Xcel Energy Center.

During Paramore’s tour this year, Bloc Party have been opening as their support act. They will be doing so for the rest of the American post-punk band’s journey around the US, set to kick off next month (May). Alongside Bloc Party, they will be joined by other artists like Genesis Owusu and The Linda Lindas.

Placebo have released a cover of the iconic Tears For Fears single, “Shout”. The classic cover, taken from the Tears For Fears album Songs From The Big Chair, peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985 and joins a rich lineage of Placebo cover versions of songs from the ‘80s. Artists such as Sinead O’Connor (“Jackie”), The Smiths (“Bigmouth Strikes Again”), The Pixies (“Where Is My Mind?”) and – most famously of all in today’s climate – Kate Bush (“Running Up That Hill”) have all been covered by the band. You can check out the cover, and its accompanying video below.

In this latest Placebo interpretation, “Shout” becomes a brooding industrial march. Given that the single’s original songwriter Roland Orzabal has said that the song concerns itself with political protest, it also makes for a fitting follow-on from Placebo’s latest album release Never Let Me Go, which marked itself out with commentary on tech-saturation, rising intolerance and the climate crisis.

Placebo recently announced a postponement of their North American tour dates, with rescheduled performances for 2023 to be announced soon.

Never Let Me Go, the band’s first album in nearly a decade, arrived in March. Classic Rock said “like their sci-fi-noir rock contemporaries Garbage, Placebo are a band to which music is finally catching up” and Kerrang! described the collection as “prescient tales of loss, surveillance, and climate change,” dubbing it “a record for our times.”

Placebo formed in 1994, with the London-based pair of Brian Molko (vocals/guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (bass/guitar), releasing their eponymous debut just two years later. In the intervening years, Placebo have released eight studio albums, that have sold over 13 million copies, filled stadiums from Moscow to Sydney, won numerous awards including a 1999 Brit Award and pushed the boundaries of gender and sexuality.

The group is also on the cusp of beginning an extensive UK and EU tour supporting their most recent album. Beginning in November the tour will see the band hit 13 different venues around England and Scotland; including 2 nights at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. You can try and bag any remaining tickets for the shows here.

Placebo’s UK tour dates:

In celebration of cultural icon Joe Strummer’s Birthday Eddie Vedder has covered “Long Shadow”, the Pearl Jam frontman posted a section of the performance via social media. The video sees Vedder commemorate Strummer on what would have been his 70th birthday on 21st August 2022. Vedder’s paid tribute to the late singer equipped with just an acoustic guitar and his trademark voice, the emotive performance takes place by an intimate campfire.

Speaking on Strummer and the posted performance, Vedder stated, “I just think that what Joe did with the Mescaleros and those records, those songs and those words, it was a very communal sound, I think when you have a communal sound, the listener feels like they can be part of that community. I can only imagine that he facilitated thousands and thousands of connections.”

Joe Strummer first rose to fame as the co-founder, singer and guitarist of The Clash, the group was formed in the late 70s and soon became a beacon within the era’s rising punk movement. Soon after their formation, The Clash created a key part of music and cultural history, the band’s third studio album London Calling was released in 1979. The album’s lead single “London Calling” soon became a staple of the genre and would go on to define an era and generation.

After Strummer disbanded the band in 1986 he embarked on the next chapter of his career, the talented artist then began his work in film soundtracks and began to release solo material. One of Strummer’s first forays into film music was in 1986 within the film Sid and Nancy, the film charted the chaotic relationship between Nancy Spungen and Sid Vicious from fellow UK punk outfit The Sex Pistols. During the ’90s, Strummer formed his own personal supergroup, The Mescaleros would go onto release three studio albums including “Long Shaddow’s” partner album Streetcore.

The album was released on 21st October 2003 via Hellcat, an independent record label based in California’s Los Angeles. The album was posthumously released after the tragic passing of Strummer in December 2002 and was received with great applause. At its time of release, Mojo magazine stated that “Streetcore is an amalgam of all that made Joe Strummer, the musician and the man, so great.”

Since its use within the Netflix TV show Stranger Things, “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. In turn, the track’s re-appearance in pop culture has inspired fellow musicians and singers to record their own rendition of the 1985 hit. Amateur singing group Pub Choir have recently made headlines for their cover due to some special feedback, after the group performed the track Bush herself reached out to sing their praises.

The email sent by Bush read, “Dear Brisbane Pub Choir. I’ve been so busy that I’ve only just had the chance to watch you all singing ‘RUTH’. It’s utterly, utterly wonderful! I love it so much! Thank you everyone. You sing it really beautifully. I’m incredibly touched by your warmth and all your smiling faces. Thank you!” The iconic singer concluded the message with a warm ending, “With lots of love, Kate.”

Astrid Jorgensen, the founder and director of Pub Choir spoke with The Guardian concerning the email, “My manager called me and said, you’ve got to get home, Kate Bush has emailed. I ran straight back – I was literally running up that hill.” Jorgensen continued to discuss the email, “It is so wild, She is the biggest artist in the world right now, so to have her say she was moved by our performance, yeah, that is a peak.”

Jorgensen also spoke with The Guardian concerning the process taken to request the licence to cover the song, “the response we got back was pretty much, ‘Good luck – we’ll ask, but maybe plan for a different song.” The permission to use the song was sent ten days before the performance, regarding Bush’s initial approval Jorgensen stated, “Even that was a massive deal, the idea that she approved.”

Bush has recently discussed the relationship she holds with her back catalogue, the singer revealed that before its newfound fame she had not listened to “Running Up That Hill” for some time. The “Wuthering Heights” singer also disclosed that she does not revisit her previous releases unless she is required to make edits and revisions to configure the music with different formats.

Whilst appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Bush spoke with Emma Barnett concerning her historic discography, “I never listen to my old stuff. But then you know, when things like this come along, I’m normally involved in something like you know, maybe doing an edit or revisiting the track for some kind of other reason, I’m working on it. So yeah, I hadn’t heard it for a really long time.“

The Glasgow band, The Twilight Sad joined up with Frightened Rabbit drummer Grant Hutchinson to cover their emotional track “Keep Yourself Warm”. The song is dedicated to commemorating the sad passing of Hutchinson’s brother Scott in 2018.

The song was performed in Glasgow to a home crowd on the 1st April 2020 and aside from featuring the drummer Grant Hutchinson from Frightened Rabbit, Alex Mackay (guitarist of Mogwai) has stepped in for Andy Macfarlane who is currently unable to perform for personal reasons.

The Twilight Sad have made the cover of “Keep Yourself Warm” a staple of their live sets since 2018 when their close friend Scott Hutchinson tragically took his own life. Speaking back in 2018, The Twilight Sad singer James Graham explained why the song is a regular fixture in their shows, saying; “We have been playing ‘Keep Yourself Warm’ and I’ve bawled my eyes out and probably will again, but even if there’s one person in the crowd who loved Scott then it’s worth it. I don’t know if other people have had the release that we’ve been able to have. If they see me being a bawling mess on stage, then maybe they’ll realise it’s OK to release these feelings. You cannot keep this sh** inside. After what’s happened with Scott, it proves that you’ve got to share things with each other. It’s never going to get easy. We phone each other and speak about it every day now and it doesn’t feel real at all, but we’ve got a platform to sing Scott’s songs. If we don’t do that, then shame on us. That song’s in our set forever now.”

The Twilight Sad have also been known to cover other songs by Frightened Rabbit such as; “The Midnight Organ Fight”, “Floating In The Forth” and “Fast Blood”. However, the latest renditions of Frightened Rabbit’s canon are made all the more poignant with the accompaniment of Scott’s brother Grant on drums.

The Twilight Sad will be supporting The Cure on their upcoming UK and European shows in 2022. Tickets can be found here.

A mental health charity has been set up in Scott Hutchinson’s memory called Tiny Changes “with 100% of profits going directly toward helping young minds feel better”. Those who would like to donate to the cause can do so here.

In 2021, Hutchinson’s family and bandmates have come together to share a book of his lyrics and artwork called “The Work”. With “handwritten excerpts by Scott, alongside his illustrations, many of which have never been seen before”. Copies of the book are available to be purchased here.

Noel Gallagher has announced that he plans to release his cover of John Lennon‘s “Mind Games”, which he recorded to mark the legendary Beatles musician’s 80th birthday. On the latest edition of his new Radio X residency, he spoke to Matt Morgan about covering a 1973 single while he was working in the studio last year.

The Oasis songwriter and guitarist had been approached to contribute to a new covers album as a tribute to Lennon, which was being put together by his son Sean Ono Lennon. Gallagher explained “I couldn’t get involved because I was doing something at the time, And on the eve of his birthday, Sean said, ‘Oh you know how it’s dad’s birthday tomorrow, and can you do something on your socials? I happened to be in the studio and I said, ‘Well, let’s record’. We just did a version of ‘”Mind Games” and did a little film.”

He was then asked whether a full version of the cover would ever be released, to which he replied “Yeah. I’ll finish it off and do it for… I’ll do it for Record Store Day maybe or something. I’ve done a lot of covers recently. I’ll probably collate them all and do it for something or other. It came out pretty good actually.”

So though he has given no firm date fans can probably expect it to be released soon. Back in October 2020, Gallagher posted a video to Instagram recording this cover which you can view below.

Additionally, on the first episode of his Radio X show earlier this month, Gallagher discussed his brother Liam’s apparent hell-raiser status. “He’s a bit of a charlatan, A lot of them in the game can’t walk it like they talk it. It’s usually those with the big mouths.”

Upon announcing his new radio venture, Noel Gallagher promised fans “some great tunes, and a lot of nonsense, being spouted mostly by me!” He has also teased the release of more new solo music while admitting he’s hit a “purple patch” in his songwriting, Gallagher has also hinted at plans for a solo tour where he plays just Oasis songs.

In relation to Oasis, there will also be an upcoming documentary about their legendary Knebworth gig, which Gallagher has described as “fucking outrageous”. Titled Oasis Knebworth 1996 the film will be screened in cinemas worldwide from September 23.
