With a certain Daft Punk fizziness, Harry Styles latest single “Late Night Talking” from new album Harry’s House is likely to be reverberating around the framework of your car for quite some time. It’s radio friendliness is instant, warm, and gratifying, and almost guaranteed to make the song a rather big summer hit given the tremendous success of previous single “As It Was”. Never afraid of pushing boundaries, Harry Styles has evolved into somewhat of a musical chameleon over the years since his departure from One Direction. With three full length LP’s now to his name, he has traversed the often difficult landscape of going solo with a certain stylistic flair and assuredness that his previous band mates have perhaps not. Now with his latest offering Harry’s House, he proves again why he has the X Factor.

Going straight to the top of Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist this week, “Late Night Talking” is the second song that greets us as we hit play on the eclectic and joyful sounding new record from Styles. Sitting down with NPR Music to discuss the meaning and inspiration behind the new songs, Harry revealed that much of the album is inspired by the idea of home and identity, and how so much of that was challenged when the pandemic arrived and forced us to examine ourselves in isolation. Speaking to Leila Fadel, Harry explains where he’s at with understanding himself away from the stardom: “I think because I started so young, it became kind of like – that’s who I am. I don’t know if I ever stopped for long enough to realise what I was if I didn’t do it. But I think getting to a place where I feel like, ‘This is what I do and I love it, but it’s not necessarily who I am.’ Just feels like a much healthier place to be operating from and making music from.”.

If he feels that he’s finding his feet on a personal level, then that comfort and confidence certainly seems to be radiating through his music too. Gaining a solid 7.2 out of 10 from a recent review by Pitchfork, Harry’s House is brimming with hooks and memorable motifs a plenty, whilst being juxtaposed by a moody underbelly of dark lyricism that indicates an artist beginning to expose a nerve and honesty that escapes much of his competition.

You can listen to Harry’s House on all major streaming services and buy all associated merch and goodies from his website here, and you can catch him live in the UK and Ireland at these dates below:
