Billie Eilish and her mother, actress Maggie Baird, have announced the return of their OVERHEATED climate action event, which will come back to The O2 in London for a third time.

The event was launched in London in 2022, in collaboration with non-profit Support+Feed, an organisation founded by Baird which focuses on tackling the climate crisis and food insecurity around the world. This year, the summit will return to The O2 in London on July 14, while making its debut in Berlin a few days before on July 9.

The event aims to host climate activists and music industry individuals, organisations and fans to connect and come together for discussion and activities on green initiatives. The official webpage for OVERHEATED says that attendees can expect short talks, panel discussions, fireside chats, video presentations, and maybe a surprise guest or two at the end of the day.

This year, OVERHEATED will host a ‘Community Village’ within the venue spaces in both London and Berlin. Here, audience members and organizations can meet and connect, partaking in conversation and fashion activities such as customizing shirts and watching local designer showcases. Fans can bring their own T-shirt to customize or pick one on site, free of charge.

A press release states: “OVERHEATED will bring together climate activists, music fans, and other leading voices for two days filled with discussion, community building and resources to help tackle the climate crisis. The programs will highlight a variety of easy and accessible actions for audience members to have a positive impact on their communities and in the continued global effort to combat climate change.”

Maggie Baird expressed her excitement for the event: “We are so grateful and incredibly humbled to be able to bring OVERHEATED to Berlin for the first time ever this year, and back to London where it all started for us. We can’t wait to continue the conversations with you all, finding ways to help our planet and combat climate change, with so many incredible people, all under one roof.”

Billie Eilish herself is no stranger to climate activism. She’s often used interviews to share her stance on the climate crisis, such as in an early feature with NME, stating “Hopefully the adults and the old people start listening to us [about climate change] so that we don’t all die.”

She spoke further on her advocacy for green initiatives in an interview with Vogue, humorously explaining “I’m still not shoving information down people’s throats. I’m more like, I’m not going to tell you what to do. I’m just going to tell you why I do this. But you’re also a bad person if you don’t do it.”

During her 2022 ‘Happier Than Ever’ world tour, Billie set up eco-villages within her concert venues, collaborating with Reverb, a non-profit organization that aims to educate and engage musicians and their fans to promote environmental sustainability. Within these spaces, fans were able to fill their water bottles for free, register to vote, and learn about environmental organizations.

Eventgoers with standing tickets for Eilish’s evening performances on the same days at both the Uber Arena in Berlin and The O2 in London will receive ‘dedicated entry’ to their chosen show – ensuring they won’t have to rejoin the general queue or risk losing their place in the line.

The OVERHEATED events will also be streamed globally via Billie Eilish’s official YouTube channel. More details can be found on the Support + Feed website, here.

The OVERHEATED event launched in London in 2022 with individuals and organisations across the music industry discussing environmental initiatives. Eilish has been involved in climate action discussions amongst other celebrities throughout this time. This year will also be the first time Eilish will debut it in Berlin, stretching the outreach of their ethos. Eilish hosts this event alongside the nonprofit Support + Feed organisation founded and run by her mother Maggie Baird to support plant-based food systems. In a press release interview with DORK magazine+, Baird expressed her love and excitement to bring the event to great heights, stating “We are so grateful and incredibly humbled to be able to bring OVERHEATED to Berlin for the first time ever this year, and back to London where it all started for us,”.

Following its launch, Eilish also released an OVERHEATED documentary, discussing the question of where we as individuals, and a society are doing enough for the environment in tackling climate issues. The film also features Yungblud, Girl in red, Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis and her brother Finneas.

Only a day after the release of ticket sales, the Berlin and London events are already sold out, though it has been announced to also be streamed on Eilish’s Youtube Channel. The 2024 event is still available to watch from its recording on Youtube.

The support of other celebrities and big names in the music industry has been extremely influential in the success of Eilish’s OVERHEATED event, merging fan bases and music passion to environmental issues.

The OVERHEATED event follows the release of her 2024 album ‘HIT ME HARD AND SOFT’ which she will be touring worldwide from this April. Tickets can be found on the artist’s website.

Climate protestors from the activist group ‘Just Stop Oil’ have filmed themselves spray painting jets in London Stansted’s VIP jet area orange in search of Swift’s plane which was believed to have landed hours earlier for the Fortnight singers Wembley show that evening.

The protestors filled fire extinguishers with orange paint, the signature colour of much of the groups distinctive branding and forced entry into the private airfield at 5am on Thursday morning and covered two jets with the paint. According to the Independent ‘Police sources said they had since been informed that the Shake It Off singer’s jet wasn’t at the private airfield.’ at the time of the attack. A similar demonstration took place at Stonehenge on Wednesday this week, where by protestors used the same technique of spraying paint onto the iconic structure.

The ‘Just Stop Oil’ website uploaded a post on the incident quoting one of the protestors Cole Macdonald, who is just 22 and from Brighton, saying “We’re living in two worlds: one where billionaires live in luxury, able to fly in private jets away from the other, where unlivable conditions are being imposed on countless millions. Meanwhile, this system that is allowing extreme wealth to be accrued by a few, to the detriment of everyone else, is destroying the conditions necessary to support human life in a rapidly accelerating never-ending ‘cruel summer’.” Quoting one of the international pop-stars most beloved songs to emphasise the state of affairs.

The pair also uploaded a series of photos with the targeted jets along with a video of the demonstration which you can watch below.

It has been virtually impossible to escape media coverage of the superstar behind the Era’s tour and discourse surrounding her carbon emissions. In an article by Newsweek, it is stated that between December 25 and January 30 swifts jet produced 77.8342 tons of carbon dioxide. The data comes from the twitter account @SwiftJetNextDay which tracks the jet on its various excursions. The mind man behind the account is Jack Sweeney, celebrity jet trader and University of Central Florida student. Sweeney faced legal action from Swift’s team earlier this year and has since ceased his updates on the jets movements however conversation around the singers trips has continued. In February a member of Swift’s publicist team told the BBC “she does use carbon offsets to compensate her private jet travel.”

The Independent article claims that Essex police were “on the scene within minutes and detained two people,”. They also claims that while they aren’t ani-protest they “will always take action where criminal acts take place.”

Despite the on-going discussions over Swift’s carbon emissions, seemingly, her popularity hasn’t taken a hit as she is due to play three sold out shows at Wembley this week, and another three in August. Fans from all over the word have flocked to venues across the UK to catch Swift’s infamous Eras tour which sees the star play various hits and lesser known songs alike across her entire 12 album discography.

Taylor Swift has recently received some heat amid the build up to this year’s Super Bowl, the annual league championship game of the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. Swift began dating NFL star Travis Kelce back in October 2023, and has since become a regular at Kansas City Chiefs games. As Kelce and his teammates will be participating in 2024’s Super Bowl, many were left to question whether Swift would make it to Las Vegas in time for the game on February 11th after having performed a show in Tokyo on February 10th.

Way back in 2022, a study by Yard, a sustainable marketing agency, showed that the 34-year-old singer’s use of private jets was one of the worst contributors to climate change and CO2 emissions. People were quick to criticise and make jokes about Swift after speculation that this will be her mode of transport to watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers.

There were some however who came to Taylor’s defence and supported her throughout the critiques. British singer-songwriter Adele publicly spoke out at one of her Las Vegas residency shows Weekends With Adele and told the haters to “get a f**king life.” The “Hello” singer went on to say “I want the 49ers to win but I also want the Chiefs to win. I think I want the Chiefs to win just because Taylor Swift goes for them…and all of you that are complaining about Taylor Swift being at the games, get a fucking life! It’s her fucking man! She’s actually made it a bit more enjoyable to watch, because like I said I have no idea what’s going on.”

Swift had also received backlash from NFL players Rob Gronkowski and Tony Dungy for appearing at games too frequently and being shown too often. Kelce’s brother Jason supported the American Sweetheart’s actions by saying: “She’s the quintessential artist right now in the world, singer-songwriter, immensely talented, unbelievable role model for young women across the globe. So I think that the NFL would probably be foolish not to show her and be a role model for all the young girls out there.”

The 1975 have just teamed up with the climate change organisation Music Declares Emergency for a new charity t-shirt.

The organisation’s No Music On A Dead Planet campaign has previously been backed by the likes of Billie Eilish and Foals, while shirts have been designed by big names such as Thom Yorke, Joy Division artist Peter Saville and many others.

Music Declares Emergency or MDE for short is an independent group that Launched in July 2019, They have no party political or commercial affiliations and use the power of music to promote cultural change and create a greener, fairer, better future. MDE represents all areas of the music industry regardless of genre, role, gender, race or sexuality and is led by individuals united by a concern for the prevention of climate change.

The 1975’s design, which comes in black and white t-shirt variations as well as on a white hoodie, is based around their rectangle logo, bearing the ‘No Music On A Dead Planet’ slogan alongside the words: “The 1975 for MDE.”

The band along with the campaign page shared on their social media an example of the white t-shirt variation. It simply shows a video of a multi-coloured tie-dye background with the logo and slogan slowly fading in before we then get a glimpse at the t-shirt.

This isn’t the first time The 1975 have joined forces with MDE as this comes after the band helped fans recycle their old t-shirts by screenprinting new The 1975 logos on them at a pop-up shop at Reading Festival in 2019. They’ve also discussed global warming in their music. The opening track of their latest album, ‘Notes on a Conditional Form’, features teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

Speaking of their most recent collaboration, the band said: “This November, the fate of the planet will be decided at COP26, The UN Climate Change Conference. We are proud to be supporting Music Declares Emergency and their #NOMUSICONADEADPLANET campaign as they fight to ensure a greener future for all.”

This week, Brian Eno has also spoken about The 1975 and Coldplay’s efforts to tackle climate change, while calling for “a revolution” in the wider music industry’s approach.

The musician/producer appeared as a guest on the second season of the Sounds Like A Plan podcast, hosted by journalist Greg Cochrane and Music Declares Emergency co-founder and Savages drummer Fay Milton.

At this time, a venue and date have not been set.

The band intends to make their festivals carbon neutral, or as close to this goal as they can. It is the intention of the band for a “dramatic reduction” in their carbon impact, from their crew, catering, transport, merchandise and production.

Massive Attack, known for famous hits, ‘Teardrop’ and ‘Paradise Circus’, teamed up with Manchester University’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in a bid to better understand CO2 emissions generated through travel and production, audience transportation and venue. Data is to be collected from the band’s upcoming tour.

Recently, Coldplay also decided to find ways to make touring more sustainable and less harmful against the environment. Chris Martin said, “We’re taking time to see how our tour can be actively beneficial…All of us have to work out the best way of doing our job.”

Their new album, ‘Everyday Life’, reflects on the band’s feelings on the environment.

Robert Del Naja, (one half of Massive Attack), said, “We’re looking forward to exploring the social and scientific solutions to the challenges we face in transitioning to a low-carbon society.”

“This project offers an opportunity to work with new and progressive identities in the planning, energy, technology and transport sectors.”

In an article with The Guardian, research fellow Dr Chris Jones from Tyndall said, “We will be working with Massive Attack to look at sources of carbon emissions from a band’s touring schedule.”

“Every industry has varying degrees of carbon impact to address and we need partnerships like this one to look at reducing carbon emissions across the board.”

Thousands of people took to the streets worldwide today, to call for action from the world’s leaders to help stop climate change ahead of the UN climate summit – COP21 – being held in Paris tomorrow (30th November). Amongst the thousands at the People’s March for Climate in London was the legendary Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, performing a DJ set on top of the Greenpeace UK float. You can check out clips of his rallying DJ set below:

Thom Yorke is marching and dancing with us!
Yorke was amongst numerous other high profile artists to sign an open letter to world leaders asking for, amongst other measures, “an ambitious commitment to climate action, starting now, that will limit future global warming to below 2.0°C (3.6 °F) relative to pre-industrial levels”. Other Musicians to sign the petition include Björk, David Bowie, Courtney Barnett, Damon Albarn, Guy Garvey and David Gilmore among many other musicians, artists and authors.

“We are deeply concerned that our global economic and industrial systems are accelerating rates of extinction, desertification and soil depletion, degrading ecosystems, acidifying and littering our rivers and oceans, and resulting in a relentless rise in greenhouse gas emissions driving irreversible climate change,” the letter states. “The outcomes of COP21 and the political decisions taken over the next months will determine many of the long-term conditions that will affect us today and for many generations to come.”

With the recent Paris Attacks threatening the cancellation of many of the COP21 protest events in Paris, Thom Yorke took to Twitter to confirm he would still be performing at the Pathway to Paris gig on the 4th and 5th of December: “Will be in Paris as planned on 4th & 5th December to put pressure on our glorious leaders at #COP21 -now or never!”
