The Glasgow synth-pop trio Chvrches have come out with a cover of Avril Lavigne’s 2002 hit “I’m With You’” as part of an Apple Music Home Session, alongside a rendition of “California” from their recent album Screen Violence.

Chvrches have had a year packed with music releases; alongside their new album, they have also released an E.P. of remixed versions of the song ‘Good Girls’, a remix of ‘How Not To Drown’ by The Cure’s Robert Smith, and two additional remixes of ‘Good Girls’ and ‘Turning The Bones’ by none other than legendary horror director and composer John Carpenter, known as the mastermind behind classics such as 1978’s Halloween and 1982’s The Thing. In light of this, the group has also recently recorded a cover of ‘Cry Little Sister’ from the 1987 film The Lost Boys. The cover is to be featured in the upcoming Netflix film ‘Nightbooks’.

Beginning in 2011, Chvrches initially had little intention to actually play live, putting out a single entitled “Lies” on Neon Gold Records’ blog site and receiving almost immediate success, with the song even being played on BBC Radio 1. The group would release their debut album The Bones Of What You Believe two years later, following a successful slew of single releases and TV performances, both in the UK and in North America.

Chvrches’ recent Apple Music Home Session sees them take an entirely different approach to their own music; instead of thumping electronic drums and silky synth melodies, they have opted for a stripped-down set-up, featuring an acoustic guitar, a piano, and the satisfying sound of a brushed drumkit. It may seem out of the blue to some that Chvrches would choose to cover Avril Lavigne, however singer Lauren Mayberry referred to the song as: “A classic banger-ballad of our times” according to NME.

The session is of course exclusive to Apple Music, and can be listened to down below, or at this link.

The Scottish synth-pop band took on the track from 1984 that appeared on Echo and The Bunnymen’s album “Ocean Rain“. You can listen to the cover via Amazon Music.

Last week the band teamed up with legendary director John Carpenter for a new two-track single. It includes Chvrches remix of Carpenters “Turning The Bones” and Carpenter remix of Chvrches “Good Girls“. Talking about the project the band said: “As horror fans, we know that John Carpenter is the godfather and the gold standard so we’re so excited to get to work with him in any capacity“.

“His films and music have been so impactful on us over the years, and without the stories he created I am not sure that the concept of ‘Screen Violence’ (and female narratives within the album) would exist in the way they do“. Both remixes are available on YouTube and more info can be found here.

In the meantime, the band’s singer Lauren Mayberry revealed that they were targeted by a US scammer who tried to extort money from them via a webpage. “The practice is known as cybersquatting and involves registering, selling or using a domain name with the intent of profiting from the goodwill of someone else’s trademark“.

Mayberry added: “the scammer also asked for lifetime memberships of the American Automobile Association as part of the extortion“. The band refused to pay and registered their domain in Spain instead: “Our manager is very smart and said we could get Chvrches.es in Spain and that, to this day, is our website. So don’t try and kid a kidder. You can’t haggle a Glaswegian, it’s not going to work“.

Chvrches heading on to a UK Tour in March next year. Check out the tickets and more info about the venues here.
